Surface Preparation, Cont.
The preparation is important regardless of the coating type.
Blast Inspection
SSPC clearly defines a near white metal blast finish in SSPC SP-10.The SSPC Vis 1-89 is a great field guide for visual reference.
Heating
Coating TemperatureIndustry standard for temperature monitoring
Fusion Bonded EpoxyMaterial is supplied in 50 to 65 pound boxes.Needs to be stored in a climate controlled environment until use.Prior to application the material should be allowed to acclimate to the environmental conditions. Can be ready for inspection and back fill once the temperature drops below 200°F.

Liquid Coatings
Coating components are supplied in kits which are mixed prior to application. It is not recommended to mix partial kits.Use of the correct solvents is very important.Material has a pot life once mixed which can be dependant on the ambient temperature.

Closing RemarksPersonnel must have a good understanding of the job requirements.
• Specifications have outlined particular surface preparation, heat, and film thickness requirements for a reason. The modification of any one of these has the potential to affect the system as a whole.
• We must have a good understanding of what is within specification and what is outside of specification. In the event that we find ourselves outside of a specification, the process must stop, and the cause corrected.
Specifications are guidelines written from both past experience and engineering research. Efforts are made when writing a specification to accommodate all situations, but this is not 100%. If we find ourselves not being able to work to a particular requirement, a flag needs to be raised and the proper persons notified for two reasons:• So that a deviation request can be approved.• So other persons working to the specification
can be notified and be given the same instructions.
