GIRLS BREAK GROUND ON NEW

“There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in,” wrote author Graham Greene. At some point in our youth, we experience at least a hint of a particular giftedness or passion.

Difficult circumstances, or distractions later in life, often keep us from attending to those

talents and passions. We can so easily settle for a life that does not give us opportunities to celebrate our uniqueness.

Eagle Ranch works hard to help each boy and girl recognize and bring forth their giftedness, and perhaps, cultivate a spirit of per- severance and resilience that they didn’t know was there. Our goal is to encourage these children to live authentic lives that celebrate who they were created to be.

More than once, a boy or girl has told me that they feel younger here. By providing our children a space to discover their unique capabilities, they are able to regain their childhood and celebrate their creativity.

Walking up to the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex puts its 40 ft. height into perspective. Seeing dinosaur models at Fernbank Science Museum in Atlanta is just one of many annual field trips students at Eagle Ranch School take to bring their learning to life.

Hands-on experiences demonstrate how what is taught in the class-room applies to the real world. Field trips are highly effective in their understanding and retention of subject matter, which is particularly helpful for students struggling in these areas.

Enhancing Academic SupportEagle Ranch School recently added an Academic Support Coordinator to help students with special academic needs. Enthusiastically filling this role is Carrie McClain, former Director of Academic Special Programs with K12, Inc., a national provider of online curriculum, materials and support for virtual schools

Carrie will help manage each child’s educational and therapeutic needs. She will also provide specialized assistance such as:

• Tutoring students who are behind grade level or experiencing academic struggles.

• Keeping families connected to their child’s learning while their son or daughter is living at Eagle Ranch.

• Helping coordinate and assimilate students with established learning plans – such as an IEP or 504 plan.

• Providing a resource for students in grades served off-campus at local elementary and high schools.

onstruction is underway on the Girls’ Wellness and Activity Center. Some of our girls joined in on the excitement by breaking some ground of their own.

Eagle Ranch designed the center based on professional input to provide the right equip-ment and space for the girls to safely explore activities and learn new skills that will help improve their fitness, confidence and perception of themselves.

Over 85 percent of girls coming to Eagle Ranch are experiencing issues with self-worth, confidence and/or body image. These issues can significantly impact current and future relationships and life choices.

Four different activity spaces will make up the 5,500-square foot building, including a dance and aerobics room; CrossFit, cardio and fitness equipment; kickboxing and self- defense room; and arts and crafts area. The center is expected to open in March 2019.

Eagle Ranch recently honored the volunteers who help make our mission possible. Our 7th annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner featured guest speaker Jeff Henderson, Lead Pastor of Gwinnett Church and Eagle Ranch Board Member. Henderson spoke about how faithful service can make a lasting impact on the lives of others. Our Volunteer of the Year award was given to DeWitt Weaver for his more than 20 years of volunteering through our annual golf tournament and additional support of the Eagle Ranch mission.

ohn Penick is a seriously cool grandpa. Just ask his five grandchildren. After all, how many other grand- fathers can say they’ve been in a Spider-Man movie?

At 77, Penick could have never guessed his second act in life would be quite so interesting. After a long career at Crawford & Co., Penick returned to his college alma mater to teach a course for new students called “The Auburn Experience.”

His flair for the dramatic resulted in his students urging him to try his hand at acting. When he moved back to Georgia to be closer to his grandchildren, Penick auditioned and landed a role in a local play. He did well enough that the director encouraged him to get a headshot and an agent.

Penick’s breakthrough in film came when he landed the role of a high school teacher in Marvel’s 2017 blockbuster "Spider-Man: Homecoming." “After those two minutes of fame, I’ve been in two more movies,” Penick noted. He’s also been to 24 auditions that may result in further roles.

He is also sharing the blessing of his new career, committing half of his acting earnings to Eagle Ranch.

“I figured if God would bless me enough to give me this opportunity, I could pass it on to others,” Penick said. “I’ve known Eddie Staub and the Ranch since 1985. We share the Auburn bond, and I know my contribution will be spent well on a great cause.”
