Girl’s Windmill Pitching Volume 389 March 5, 2013 My First College Tournament of the Season First, allow me to apologize to ECU alumni John Allen. For some unknown reason in the last newsletter I mistakenly called East Carolina University Eastern Carolina University. I knew the real name and have no idea why I called them Eastern instead of East. So, my apologies to all whom I may have offended. As I prepared for the trip, the weather was looking bad. Brian Hensley, the Liberty pitching coach contacted me Wednesday and said they still intended to head down to Greenville, NC Thursday. Cheryl and I left about 3:30 Friday morning. The forecast for Greenville was for rain and freezing rain. So much for the warm, southern sunshine. We arrived in Greenville with games already delayed. I talked with Tom Brittingham and he was in the lobby of the Hampton. I asked him to check with the front desk and ask if I could get an early check-in and they told him I could check in anytime. So at around 9:00 am we checked in at the Greenville Hampton. I am very thankful they allowed that. The Hampton Inn’s have always treated me great. That is why when I go to Team New Jersey I always stay at the same Hampton Inn. After checking in we prepared to go to the game. Most of the weekend end had rain and cold temperatures but the East Carolina Staff was able to get the games in at their beautiful four million dollar facility. Friday after watching Liberty play Fairfield in an 8 inning win for the Flames, Cheryl and I were scheduled to ride about 60 miles east to pick up two Brown Turkey Fig trees from South View Garden Center. I was bringing them back to Delmar to plant in back of the pool. The adventure began. Where we traveled, we probably still don’t have peace treaties with native Americans. When I emailed Mary who co-owns South View with her husband Louie, she said that she would send me directions because google and some of the others have problems with their location. What she didn’t tell me is cell phones are a future project for the area. I checked my phone when I was about four miles from their place because she had told me to call so either she or Louie could meet me. The place is large. Guess what! No signal! I told Cheryl it would be bad to have an emergency out there and have no way to contact anyone. Guess what else! Just before we turned into their long dirt lane, Cheryl said “What’s that sound?” I continued to South View, got out and looked. It was a flat rear tire. About that time Louie came out of an equipment shop. We told him what had happened and that man, not knowing us from anyone, changed my tire, put the old tire on the rear carrier, fully inflated the spare he had put on and checked the air in the rest of my tires and would not let me give him a cent. He was a life saver. I tried several times and he was adamant. I bought my two trees which looked great and were nicely branched and left Bill Dryden

My First College Tournament of the Season

First, allow me to apologize to ECU alumni John Allen. For some unknown reason in the last newsletter Imistakenly called East Carolina University Eastern Carolina University. I knew the real name and have no ideawhy I called them Eastern instead of East. So, my apologies to all whom I may have offended.

As I prepared for the trip, the weather was looking bad. Brian Hensley, the Liberty pitching coach contacted meWednesday and said they still intended to head down to Greenville, NC Thursday. Cheryl and I left about 3:30Friday morning. The forecast for Greenville was for rain and freezing rain. So much for the warm, southernsunshine. We arrived in Greenville with games already delayed. for the return to Greenville, hoping the spare would hold. It should because when we pulled the cover off, it wasa brand new tire, still had the little mold nubs on it. Next was to get another spare.I had originally bought the Good Year Trackers from Walmart. There was one across from the Hampton so westopped on our way back to the hotel. I had purchased them in 2011 along with the hazard package. The man atthe counter looked it up and the $136.00 tire would cost me $73.00 after prorating it. The catch was the shopclosed at 7:00 and they had already stopped tire work. The man at the counter told me to talk to the foreman inthe shop. I did. I explained what had happened and they went ahead and put the new tire on the spare rim andremounted it on the rear carrier. Thank God for good people and thank God for letting me find them. What couldhave been a disaster turned into a great day. That night Brian Hensley of Liberty and I talked in the lobby and exchanged some ideas. The next morning Ispent breakfast time with Brian and Head Coach Paul Wetmore, talking more softball as Cheryl listened. Then it was off to the games and fighting drizzle, and cold was not fun but watching the softball games was.We had lunch with Nick Frungillo, his wife Mimi and Nick, Jr. It’s always good seeing Nick and Mimi. They aregood friends and a lot of fun.We had an early dinner with Glenn, Jessie, Shelby and Justin Smith before returning for the night game. After that, they led us to the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Factory (that helps the diet) where we got fresh, hotdoughtnuts. Through this whole weekend Cheryl, who is allergic to cold, was broken out in hives from thetemperatures. Finally Sunday morning I decided I would head out for home and not see the last few games. So the trip home was uneventful (again, thank God) and we were home by around 4:30 where my daughter,Heather had made us dinner. It was great getting out and seeing Taylor August of Fairfield play, seeing her mom Lisa again and hanging alittle with the Liberty coaches and my friends from the Belles. I have been friends with Paul Wetmore for 20years and really admire what he does with Liberty. Brian and I keep in touch about Annah and discuss her upsand downs. They don’t try to change her, just work with what she has and try to enhance it.I am looking forward to more escapades on the softball trail.

Tips “It’s On!!”

“What’s on?” you may ask. The new season of Duck Dynasty, of course! What else? We have waitedwith baited breath for the Robertson family and employees to return and now they are back in all theirredneck glory.

As a side note, high school softball is back. It’s on for the 2013 season and you have to ask yourself onequestion. Do you feel lucky? (Quote from Dirty Harry movie) If you have to feel lucky, you haven’t worked to get ready. So, the real question is “are you ready?”

Tryouts have started and cuts will be made fairly quickly. Hopefully those who have worked hard toprepare themselves will be rewarded for their efforts. The best thing I can tell you at this point is hustle.Don’t look lazy! Run to every drill. Give 100% effort on every move of every drill. Don’t tell people youshould be there. Show them you should be there. No amount of mouth beats action when you are tryingto make the team.Returning players, don’t act like you have it made. Your effort should be just as energy filled as whenyou tried out the first time. Be a winner. Lead by example.

Do you see the logo above? That is the logo of the Visalus weight loss and fitness program. Two of my

daughters, their husbands, my wife and myself are on the program and have had great results, losing pounds,

increasing energy. The proof is in the photos below:

Seeing is believing. Is it a magic bullet? No! It is a program that can help anyone who is willing to take a challenge. Iwent to the cardiologist January 2 and he told me he didn’t really care about me losing more weight. He just wantednd

me to stay active. I will shoot for 200 lbs anyway. My heart rate (electrocardiogram) was 56 bpm. My oxygen rate was98.75% and my blood pressure was 122/70. I feel great and have energy. I am now at 208 which is 42 lbs lighter. Mywife Cheryl had knee problems and could not walk much. Once she started the program, she got up to 40 minutes a dayon the elliptical and when we go to Sam’s Club she will say “let’s leave the jeep here and walk to Walmart.” That is aworld of difference. Ashley and Ray belong to a gym and workout and Kim does a spinning class plus walks trails. This is a completely new world for all of us and the Visalus program transforms people. It is even certified Kosher forthose who adhere to Jewish diets.Take the 90-day challenge and see the difference.Go to my website at Bill’s 90-day Visalus challenge , step on the mound and take the challenge.

News and Tournament ResultsAfter I published last week I received some more news about pitching students performance in the indoor gamesat Washington College. Lexi Black pitched well for the Delaware Storm 12U in a win against the DelawareMagic North.Marissa Walls pitched really well for the Delaware Blue Hens 12U in a 2-1 loss to Delaware Magic North. Shestruck out 3, walked 3 and Washington College Head Coach Lacey Lister was really impressed with her.

Annah Brittingham picked up a win over East Carolina University in a 5-4 decision February 24 . During theth

tournament she also opened the tournament for Liberty getting no decision over Fairfield as Chandler Ball pickedup the win in relief via a walk-off homer by Grace Nordan in the bottom of the 8 .th

Annah was chased by Notre Dame after allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 2.1 innings of work. She took the loss and theFighting Irish went on to score 5 more runs off relief pitching. Fairfield also defeated the Flames with SamFrungillo stroking a 2-run double and getting a walk. Brittingham pitched relief in that game as Alyssa DeMartinotook the loss. In their home opener Brittingham again took the mound a suffered another loss. This time it was an8-inning loss to Hampton by a 10-8 score. Chandler Ball got the 2 start and pitched a 4-hit, 10-1 win overnd

Hampton in 5 innings. On Saturday Annah took the mound in a single game against Manhattan and with a 2-hit,7-0 win, gave Liberty its first shut-out win since March 24 , 2012 when they shut out Gardner Webb. In thatth

game Brittingham tied her game high strikeout record of 5.Former Morris County Belle Sam Frungillo got in on the action in a 14-10 win over East Carolina when she drovein a run. Frungillo is batting .500 on the young season. The University of Tennessee’s Lauren Gibson, a former pitching student turned 2 baseman, continues her verynd

successful senior year in 2013. She is 2 in batting with a .400 average. She has produced 4 doubles, a triple andnd

3 homers with 16 RBI’s. She has walked 14 times and been hit by a pitch 4 times and has only 9 strikeouts in 60at bats.Former student and University of Michigan senior Stephanie Speierman is getting more mound time this seasonand in 6 appearances is 1 and 0, with most appearances coming in relief. According to their stat sheet the team is13 and 5.

Bucknell’s Cassie Greenhawk, another former pitching student, has been doing well for the Bison. She is startingin the outfield, hitting, walking, scoring and driving in runs. Sounds like a pretty good senior season to me. Keepit up Cass! Bucknell is now 3 and 8 as they ready for their spring break swing.

Several new students have begun taking lessons recently including Hope Abell from VA who joins Olivia Tullousand Payton McNure from the same area. Olivia and Payton have been with me and are getting ready for LittleLeague where Payton moves to 11-12 year old while Olivia and Hope will play 9-10 year old.

Megan Roy, a freshman at Mardela High in MD has started lessons and Skylar Griffin and Charlotte Edmunds arestarting. They are from the brand new Berlin Little League Softball organization which Katie Kemp Griffin, former Parkside High Head Coach has been instrumental in starting.

Savannah Reed started a couple of months again. She is a 6 grader playing for the Diamond State Swoop 12Uth

team. She has been improving her mechanics by leaps and bounds.

I have begun doing Sunday private lessons at the Georgetown facility. This will continue through the end of highschool season. I started it for students who couldn’t make it to weekday lessons because of school ball. Only onemiddle school student has taken advantage of it while 3 new students have signed up so far. I have time slotsavailable for those who may want them but they are not choose your own. I line them up back to back to limitdown time. Currently I have 1:30 on open. I am booked 11:30-1:30. We just started it on March 3 . If interestedrd

email me before they fill. I have 4 and will probably not accept over 4 more.
