Giovanni Gabrieli 1555-1612. Born in Venice. Choral and Instrumental composer. Organist and church music leading composer. St. Mark’s Church. Nephew of Andrea Gabrieli. In his earliest period, followed the idioms of Lasso and Andrea. Simplicity, intelligibility of text, extension of sonorities and contrapuntal texture. Composed for single and multiple choirs: motet. In the middle period, developed interest for double-chorus. As well as combination of voices and instruments. Compositional technique: cori spezzati. Polychoral. Chorus and instruments in opposition, accenting each other, blending. In the last period, moved from cori spezzati in favor of contrasts between solo voices, chorus and instruments, all arranged in separate sections.
