CUSMIBIO“FROM MANY TO FEW”
An opportunity for all students. Reach the largest possible number of
students attending all types of high schools
A challenge for the most talented.Selected actions envisaged for the most gifted students

CUSMIBIO HAS DEDICATED LABS IN THE MILAN STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
These labs are an integral part of the Lombardy school system
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
CusMiBio activities are funded by UniMi (University of Milan),
USR (Educational Office of Lombardy), MIUR (Italian Ministry of University and Research).
Lab costs are partly covered by students’ fees.
Unfortunately no EC funds yet
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
Since 2009 CusMiBio has been appointed by the Italian Ministry of Education as reference
centre for the valorization of talented High School students

HOW TO INVOLVE TALENTED STUDENTS IN NEW INITIATIVES?
1.WANNABE A RESEARCHER: ATTEND A TOP SCIENCE PROJECT
2.FROM SCHOOL to UNIVERSITY: A ROUND TRIP
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
RESULTSThe project greatly excited all the students involved and also their school teachers! The results obtained were published in a Science and Society correspondence in EMBO Reports (EMBO Reports 9, 3, 208–211, 2008).
WANNABE A RESEARCHER: ATTEND A TOP SCIENCE PROJECT •to keep tight contacts with the talented students selected through the annual contests•to combine professional quality research with a novel strategy for research-based undergraduate education
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel

AN INTERACTIVE AND SYNERGISTIC TANDEMTO DESIGN INNOVATIVE HANDS-ON LEARNING PRACTICES
IN BIOLOGY The most motivated and skilled students, identified through selective competitions, are invited together with their teachers
to set-up KITS and learning modules adapted to be transferred to their schools.
Both are actors of the project. Together they develop the theoretical and practical
activities to be proposed to their peers
A positive reciprocal feedback
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
Using peer-to-peer teaching: •Engages students and inspires their peers•Helps students motivate each other to delve deeper into science•Talented students returning to their schools share their knowledge with fellow students through a combination of experiments and dialogue
This approach facilitates productive interactions and dialogue within peers and can break the intimidating “teacher-student” barrier
FROM SCHOOL to UNIVERSITY: A ROUND TRIP
RESULTS: Students (1)
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
‘learning by teaching’ strategy: you learn a lot when you have to
teach others
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
students’ own knowledge and confidence grows as they pass on their knowledge and experiences
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
Moreover…students have an opportunity to develop a wide range of complementary skills, such as work in groups, peer exchange abilities, communication with an appropriate language
whether the students taught by the tutors benefit is yet to be evaluated.
FROM SCHOOL to UNIVERSITY: A ROUND TRIP
RESULTS: Students (2)
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
•acquisition of additional knowledge to manage the topics with the required competence• •design of Lab activities suitable for being performed at school
•creation of the most favorable conditions for cooperation within and between schools• •exchange of materials and experiences.

PILOTSCHOOL
PILOTSCHOOL
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
This project needs the
teachers’
contribution for:
•the identification of pilot schools (provided with some kind of lab space and equipment) that can act as reference labs for all the schools of a given area •development of school networks
DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL NETWORKS
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
The collaboration starts during the training courses where the different stake-holders, i.e. scientists, student and their teachers come in close contact. Scientists have agreed to mentor classroom teachers and students through these courses.
TRAINING FOR TEACHERS AND THEIR STUDENTS
How to use the kits at school
WHO IS THE CULPRIT?WHO IS THE CULPRIT?
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
DNA PROFILING •constructing a real life crime scene investigation, collecting the evidence
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
•finding the incriminating evidence, through blood testing and DNA analysis to obtain molecular identikits for human genotypic identification.
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
FLASH GEL SYSTEM
5 min separation & recovery
…find the culprit
YEAST : HONORARY MAMMALYEAST : HONORARY MAMMAL
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
YEAST: HONORARY MAMMAL
•mating of yeast cells of opposite mating type and observe complementation
•selection of cell division cycle (cdc) mutants based on their temperature-sensitivity
•microscopic observation of Saccharomyces cells during cell division;
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
NB: All materials must be returned to CusMiBio. Mishandling, breakage or missing instruments costs will be borne by the school. All materials provided in the kit, if correctly handled, don’t pose risks and conform to safety standards. For further information, check the instructions in the kit.
EACH KIT COMES WITH THE LIST OF MATERIALS
CHROMOSOME ANALYSISCHROMOSOME ANALYSIS
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
CHROMOSOME ANALYSIS
•Microscope observation to compare human and mouse metaphase chromosomes;•cytogenetic analysis of human normal and pathological karyotypes.
FISHFISH
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
Fluorescent in situ hybridization
Magnetic bars + iron beads serving as probes!!
FISH is suitable for gene mapping and for the identification of small chromosomal aberrations involving a single gene, not visible by cytogenetics.
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
HOW TO IDENTIFY SPECIFIC GENES ON CHROMOSOMES?
HOW TO IDENTIFY SMALL CHROMOSOMAL ABERRATIONS INVOLVING SINGLE GENES?
The use of a model simulating FISH allows the students to acquire the basic principles of this technique and to appreciate its high resolution power.
NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel
Deletion of a small chromosome region
Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)
