Highs and Lows of Gardening March/April
By Liz Hutton
I have lost the plot, not sure what month I am doing.
Anyway the lows of gardening have certainly hit rock
bottom. No one can garden if the only water has to
be lugged in a bucket from the bath, particularly as,
in the interests of saving water, we are using the
shower. Luckily we have a little tank which catches the shower water which
we can then pump out to water a few bits and pieces. It takes 2 days of
showers to water about a quarter of the garden and frankly I can’t see much
point as we can hardly keep anything alive, just struggling along. The only
things in the garden at present that are looking even faintly happy are the
clivia and the succulents I have in little pots on the veranda. Some of the
bromeliads are putting on a fine show of pink fluffy flowers but the leaves
have all burnt in the sun so the plants look horrible. Unfortunately not having
water has a knock on effect as the lovely plant which kept them in the shade
has now become compost. Even the agapanthus are dying. The leaves have
become white and simply fallen off and the roots are now exposed. Digging
them up is going to be a major job and I am in no way going to try and tackle
it. They must die ‘in situ’ A while back I saw a post on facebook from a Pastor
who has promised us that soon we will have many blessings bestowed on us
from above, I am hoping that rain will be amongst the blessings. Maybe the
agapanthus will be inspired to try again!
Chairmans note…….
I have managed to keep some of my
garden looking reasonably alive by
covering the beds with a good layer of
homemade compost as a mulch to keep
in any water that happens to fall . My
borehole helps but we only give them a dampening after 7pm to stop the heat
of the day from drying it up again. And certainly not every day…each part gets
only once a week …if that. For now we are just preparing our new veggie plots
for later in the season using the haybale method. I’ll elaborate on that once
we get it working.
A word from the chair
It was encouraging to see so many attending our AGM this year. And for those who couldn’t
manage to come I will give you a brief rundown of the proceedings and discussions. If anyone
requires a full set of minutes they can request a copy through me.
We have had a number of new members joined us this year and our numbers have swelled as a
result. However, there are still quite a lot of members who have not yet renewed. We will extend
the renewal period into April but please contact Irene or Barbara to arrange a time as they are
very busy ladies. An email or what’s app to either of them will help if you are away for the time
being.
We are very pleased to announce that we have 3 new committee members and are looking
forward to their input. So please help me welcome Cecilia Lewis, Derek van Zyl, and Don
Oosthuizen to the committee. I’m sure we are all going to have fun.
Saskia has also agreed to look after the database for one more year while we continue to find
someone she can train to take it on. She swears it’s simple enough it just takes time to learn the
ins and outs as this is an important job requiring a great attention to detail and communication
with Head Office.
At the meeting Irene mentioned the high cost of bank charges and asked that members not
send cheques or deposit cash as we recently had a deposit of R50 cash and it cost us R30 in
charges. A simple EFT would suffice for any payments or of course cash is always welcomed.
Ginny is continuing to compile our newsletters, very ably I might add and it was requested that
those few members still receiving hard copies by delivery would please let us have an email
address to use instead as our printing costs per month are escalating. Of course with the email
version you get it in full colour and it can be read as large or small as you wish.
I also want to thank our advertisers who help our finances greatly. Without them we would not
be able to subsidise so many functions. Which brings me to another point raised. We would
love to see input from the members in the form of snippets, news, items of interest, and of
course any ideas for future events would be most welcome. Just drop an email or “whatsapp” to
any of the committee.
The social calendar is being prepared right up to September now but it is imperative to have
advance booking for these as we really do not want to have last minute cancellations for lack of
interest. To this end we sent round some lists to add your names at the AGM. The list of events
is published in the newsletter each month for you all to check your calendars and it would help
us greatly if you see you can make it please just give Irene, or myself, a call to go on the list.
Please bear in mind that as we subsidise these events it was decided at the AGM that we allow
only one guest per member to attend (2 guests per couple attending) but those guests must pay
the full price.
Each guest must be signed in as they arrive and may only attend 2 such events in any year
before they will be asked to become full members. This is to avoid a situation whereby non-
members are taking up seats in a limited venue that fully paid members should have been
taking.
A reminder that fully paid up members means they have the card issued by Irene for SAARP
Sedgefield Social Club…..and not just the plastic card issued by Cape Town for National
members.
I will leave Ginny to detail the events in the calendar but I would like to just remind
everyone……
Bingo is at 2pm sharp on every 2nd Monday of the month at Sedgefield Arms. Please think
about joining us as it is a fun afternoon.
The Popular Wors Braai is again at Irene’s on 23rd April. (17 Duiwe Street.) Please remember
to book with Irene and bring your chair, plate and cutlery…..we do the rest.
And finally, I raised the subject of a member’s recent experience of the services of one of the
companies offering a special service to SAARP Members. There was an issue with an
inexperienced staff member and their handling of the customer enquiry. To cut a long story
short, after a flurry of emails to head office and subsequently to the companies involved the
matter was resolved to the customer satisfaction …all within 48 hours. In short I want to remind
members that in any dealings with SAARP National and their associated services if at any time
you are dissatisfied with the service please do let us know. Most problems can be rectified
immediately with an email to the right people. We do not tolerate bad service.
So, with all that I will sign off now and let you all start checking out our calendar and booking
your places.
Have a lovely April, and hopefully we will see some of you at the Station to catch Ginny in her
acting debut with Midsummer Night’s Dream and myself wearing fairy wings out front. A sight to
behold so I’m told.
Tickets available at Deo Gratia coffee shop by Pick & Pay.
Best regards
Janice
April Fools – Meaning April Fools' Day (sometimes called All Fools' Day) is celebrated every year on April 1 by
playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People
playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting April Fool. Although popular since the 19th
century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.
Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (1392) contains the first recorded association between April 1
and foolishness.
As well as people playing pranks on one another on April Fools' Day, elaborate practical jokes
have appeared on radio and TV stations, newspapers, web sites, and have been performed by
large corporations. In one famous prank from 1957, the BBC broadcast a film in
their Panorama current affairs series purporting to show Swiss farmers picking freshly-grown
spaghetti, in what they called the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest. The BBC were later flooded with
requests to purchase a spaghetti plant, forcing them to declare the film a hoax on the news the
next day. On April Fools' Day 2016, online football news channel Goal.com falsely reported
that FC Barcelona winger Lionel Messi agreed to a €500 million deal to sign with Real
Madrid for five years. The reporter's name used in the article was "Lirpa Loof", which is "April
Fool" spelled backwards.
A positive view is that April Fools' can be good for one's health because it encourages "jokes,
hoaxes...pranks, and belly laughs", and brings all the benefits of laughter including stress relief
and reducing strain on the heart. There are many "best of" April Fools' Day lists that are
compiled in order to showcase the best examples of how the day is celebrated. Various April
Fools' campaigns have been praised for their innovation, creativity, writing, and general effort.
With the advent of the Internet and readily available global news services, April Fools' pranks
can catch and embarrass a wider audience than ever before.

Wishing all our members a Blessed and Happy Easter Holiday
As Easter approaches……… There are 3 major events this month, Midsummer Nights Dream is being performed as an outdoor play set on the Station platform and should be a magical experience for all.
Bring your blankets or chairs and your picnic, or perhaps order a picnic from Louisa at the Whistle Stop Café for collection on the night. There are still some tickets available for 7
th and 8
th and again on
15th April. Available from Deo Gratia Coffee shop.
Produced by Sedgefield Players be prepared again to spot some familiar faces both on and off the stage.
The Slow Festival is once again promising to be a delightful and exciting weekend and again, there are some familiar faces on the organising teams there. The last performance for Midsummer Nights Dream will be on Slow Fest Saturday on 15
th but I hear they have a pretty full programme
of events. Keep your eyes open for the Edge printing the programme soon. Why not get into the spirit and wear orange all weekend to show
you are a local and not a tourist as we know there will be plenty of those around too, keeping most businesses busy. All culminating with the Grand Parade through town on Sunday
And Lastly,…Easter itself. The various churches in the area will again be blessing us with the “Way of the Cross” experience. Keep an eye on the local news and the printed programme for more details but I hear there is a tasting experience also to really make you feel you are there.
