Week of February 24, 2020

Dear Husky Families,

While February is a short month it is a busy one! Our group oral interpretation team per-formed a few weeks back at the CUSD com-petition and they brought home a superior. I believe they put on one of the best perfor-mances that I have ever seen! I am so proud of our team and our coaches!

Today, you should receive a progress report for 3rd quarter. Please continue to have ongoing conversations with your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns with your child’s pro-gress.

This year, teachers have been piloting i-Ready Math and ELA curriculum.. Your children can continue their learning with i-Ready at home by logging into their Clever account on a computer or tablet! i-Ready provides personalized academic and enrichment activities to meet your student's specific needs. The i-Ready instructional lessons will support students' growth, development and Math/Reading grade-level readiness. This pro-gram recommends that students work on it 45 minutes per sub-ject, per week. Many, if not all, teachers have this time built into their class or homework schedule. i-Ready is a great way for your child to continue to progress and learn at their level, and a free way for you to keep them engaged with school work at home.

Finally, beginning next week the SART parent survey will be emailed to our families. You will receive an email from me with additional information regarding the survey. I greatly value your input and feedback, please take a moment to complete the sur-vey.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend! Sincerely, Mrs. Kismet

Autism Awareness Day is April 2nd

April 2nd is National Autism Awareness day. Here at Maple Creek, we have two Special Education Intensive Autism Programs as well as many other students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in gen-eral education classes. Autism Aware-ness is represented by the color blue and multicolor puzzle pieces. The puzzle piece pattern reflects the complexity of the Autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition.

CUSD Autism Awareness shirts are available for order. Pick up an order form from your child’s teacher, the office, or Room 5! All orders are due to Room 5 by February 26th – Late orders will not be accepted. Join us on April 2nd as we “Light it up Blue” to show our support for our friends with Autism.”

PTC Corner

That's a wrap with the spring fundraiser! Thank you so very much for your contributions and support.

The teachers and staff will be serving pancakes at our upcom-ing pancake breakfast. It will be held on Saturday, March 21st at Applebee's on Herndon and Ce-dar. Plates will be $10 each.

Additional information will be coming home soon.

See you at our next meeting on Tuesday, March 10th in the library.

 Mac-and-Kids/IDAC (Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee)

Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 3rd from 6:00-7:30 PM in the MPR. Please join us for a great time learning about the Native American Culture! Share a pot-luck dinner and watch a live presentation. Please bring a main dish or side dish to share and Mac-and Kids will provide desserts. We will welcome main dishes from any culture. Remember all stu-dents must be accompanied by their parent and must attend every meeting to earn Block H points. See Miss Zeven-bergen or Mrs. Mahaffey if you have any questions. See you there!

Celebrations Around The World

N’cwala Festival

The N’cwala Festival is held on February 24 in the country of Zambia. Zambia is located on the continent of Africa. N’cwala is held each February to celebrate the harvest. This harvest festival is one of the most interesting festivals in Zambia. In addition to celebrating the first harvest of the season, the Ngoni people of eastern Zambia celebrate their entrance into Zambia in 1835. The N’cwala Festival is held every year in the village of Mutenguleni.

During the Festival, the paramount Ngoni chief is given the first harvest of the season. There is a lot of music and dancing. Twelve local chiefs travel to the festival with their finest danc-ers. The dancers wear outfits and headdresses made from animal furs. These dancers perform before the Paramount chief to show him how they would protect him if they were at war. The chief then picks one group as the best warrior dancers.

Question of the Week: What continent is Zambia in?
