CITY CENTRE LIVING AT ITS VERY BEST!
INTRODUCTION
Robert Clough, master builder of York, built Gillygate House in 1769, and its
history since then is well documented having been thoroughly researched by
the present owners. It was said at the time that the house “was very well
finished” and “notable among the fittings is the ceiling in the first floor
saloon” (now Drawing Room ) and the wood & plaster work around the
doors, ceilings and fireplaces are attributed to master carver Thomas
Wolstenholme. Most original features remain today.
During the last two years, Gillygate House has been skilfully remodelled back
from being a Doctors’ Surgery (for around the last fifty years) to what is now
possibly the best town house York has to offer! From top-to-toe, the house
has been transformed to an incredible standard with brand new plumbing,
wiring and heating as well as all the “nice bits“ which include a bespoke
kitchen, truly luxurious bathrooms and bedrooms, and immaculate
decoration and fixtures & fittings throughout. Everything ties in incredibly
well with the original characteristics of the house, complimenting the grand
staircase, wonderful fireplaces and the ceiling friezes and cornicing. Not
forgetting that at the rear of the house the large Georgian windows perfectly
frame the views of The Minster and city walls!
On entering the house, it is quick to see the amount of hard work, time and
expense that has gone in to this home over the last couple of years. You are
met with a sense of warmth and scale: with around 5,500 square feet spread
over 4 floors, Gillygate House offers accommodation that will suit most
modern day families looking for a unique house in the centre of town. On
the ground floor is a large yet cosy feeling sitting room with an impressive
fireplace, a study, as well as a dining room - perfect for entertaining - and a
utility room which doubles up as the preparation kitchen. Off the dining
room is a bathroom plus downstairs loo which means that the ground floor
could be used as self-contained apartment. What was once the surgery
reception, at the rear of the ground floor, is a large later day extension
presenting endless possibilities to be a perfect children’s playroom, home
office, gym, reading room - the choice is yours!
INTRODUCTION CONT.
The first floor is pure luxury to say the least. The Drawing Room is a
phenomenal space with a high ceiling of rococo plasterwork, detailed
cornicing and a wonderful fireplace. The dining kitchen is state of the art
with integrated appliances and detailed granite work surfaces. The stunning
Villeroy & Boch bathroom on this floor oozes pure opulence and indulgence.
The second floor has a most impressive master suite incorporating one of the
former principal rooms as a fantastic dressing room. The guest suite also has
a grand bathroom that, if needed, could double up as second house
bathroom. Finally, on the third floor, there are three further bedrooms,
recently used by the current owners as a self contained flat for their teenage
son, but ideal for an au pair or other uses.
Outside the house is a mature garden and of good size to say the house is in
the centre of York. There are a selection of mature trees and bushes giving it
a sense of privacy as well as enough space to have some great al fresco
parties. Access from Gillygate to the rear of the property is via a side
passageway.
All in all, Gillygate House is a rare opportunity to buy a perfect, centrally
located townhouse in what has just been voted England’s number one place
to live (Sunday Times March 2018).
SCHOOLING
Within close proximity to the property are a number of highly regarded
schools. The coeducational schools of St Olave’s, St Peter’s and Bootham
School are less than 10 minutes’ walk from the house. Approximately 20
minutes’ walk away is The Mount School for girls.
ENVIRONS The location of Gillygate House, just a two minute walk from the Minster, is
perfect for those who wish to take advantage of everything York has to offer. The
property is within walking distance of the principal shopping streets, The Museum
Gardens, a number of art galleries and The Theatre. York Hospital and the railway
station are both an easy walk as well.
GILLYGATE Gillygate itself is a thriving part of York with a number of cafés, well loved
restaurants and boutique shops, so literally everything is on your door step.
