Giggle and Snort
took a trip with their class
to go horseback riding
at Patty Cake Pass.
Miss Flower said, “Students,
before we can go,
here are the safety rules
you have to know.”
Giggle and Snort
gave a loud belly laugh
when Miss Flower held up
a horse-safety graph.

The next thing she showed
was a chart of a horse.
Our friends Snort and Giggle
paid no mind, of course.
The others all watched,
and they learned every rule.
But Giggle and Snort
never listened in school.
They looked out the window
and practiced pig snoring.
They thought that all rules
were useless and boring.

The bus left the school
after lunchtime that day.
Patty Cake Pass
was not far away.
Miss Flower said, “Students,
please line up in twos.”
Snort and Giggle were partners
that no one would choose!
The piglets walked quickly
away from the bus.
They were met at the gate
by a cowhand named Gus.

Gus said, “Listen up, kiddos.
Obey my commands.
Just follow behind me.
Buddies, hold hands.”
“We never obey,”
Giggle whispered to Snort.
“That's not our department.
We're just not the sort.”
The cowhand just smiled
and took both by the hand.
“Let me help you,” he said,
“since you don’t understand.”

Outside the stable,
Gus gave a short speech.
“Before you may ride,
I’ve a lesson to teach.”
The cowhand went over
the safety rules there.
The two piglets giggled,
“Hey, what do we care?”
The cowhand’s expression
was friendly and kind.
“We don't want an accident.
Keep that in mind.”

His audience said,
“Show us what you can do.
We want to see what
we can do, too.”
Gus jumped on the back
of his shiny, brown steed.
He did some trick riding.
Amazing, indeed!
“I’ll bet I could do that!”
Snort shouted out loud.
“I’ll bet I could, too,”
Giggle yelled from the crowd.

The cowboy came over
and tipped his broad hat.
“Someday, maybe you
will ride horses like that.”
In the stable were horses
the students could ride.
When the class had gone in,
You-know-who ran outside.

They thought they would look for
a horse of their own.
They found one, all right.
His name was Big Roan.

“You hold him for me.
I’ll go first,” Giggle said.
He tried climbing over
the horse's big head.
Big Roan shook his head,
making Giggle fall down.
“Guess I made a mistake,”
Giggle said with a frown.
Snort said, “I’ll try this end.”
He climbed up the tail.
Big Roan tossed him off,
and Snort fell in a pail.

“Now, kids,” said the cowhand,
“when you want to ride,
always get on
from the horse's left side.
“Left foot goes in the stirrup—
that hanging-down thing.
Then pull yourself up.
Give your right leg a swing.
“Now you’re ready to go.
Sit up straight and tall.
Don't ride too fast,
and then you won’t fall.”
Giggle and Snort
didn’t hear him, of course.
They were still tryingto get on their horse.

Big Roan took off running.
The two pigs held tight.
They streamed out behind
like a strange piggy kite.
Snort went to the left.
Giggle went to the right.
Big Roan must have thought
they were having a fight!
Giggle flew up. Then
he plopped down on Snort.
“Get off me!” his pal yelled.
“I don’t like this sport!”

They stood on the saddle
and tried changing places.
No one could see
the fear on their faces.
They rode round the ring
with Big Roan in high gear.
All the pigs watching
let out a big cheer.

Then Snort grabbed the reins
and pulled back with one arm.
Giggle yelled, “WHOA!”
and it worked like a charm.
Big Roan came to a stop.
He was happy to rest.
It was quite a performance—
maybe his best!
All the students applauded
the piglets' great trick.
But Giggle and Snort
were both feeling quite sick.

The cowhand rode over
and shouted with glee,
“How did you do that?
You rode just like me!”
Miss Flower knew better.
She just rolled her eyes.
“Well, Giggle! Well, Snort!
Who got the surprise?
“Next time, will you listen
when you come to school?
Next time, will you learn
when we teach you a rule?”
The two pigs agreed
safety lessons were good.
They said, “Next time we’ll listen
the way that we should!”
