A Unique Color Changing Gemstone

February 14th has been a special day for lovers since ancient Roman times. But the tradition of giving gifts

of love on Valentine’s Day only started in England in 1446. It was not until 1537 that St. Valen-tine’s Day was actually de-clared a national holiday by King Henry VIII.

This romantic holiday offers lovers, sweet-hearts, friends and family the perfect op-portunity to celebrate your feelings and convey sentiments of love. There is nothing like a gift from the heart and you can never go wrong with the gift of fine jewelry.

There is no romantic symbol more enduring than the ever-popular heart made of sterling silver, precious karat gold or platinum. Heart-shaped jewelry has always been a lead-ing design for Valentine’s Day gifts. Today, you can choose from dozens of

heart styles, traditional or non-traditional, col-orful or classic, sophisticated or fun.

Any jewelry design created with passionate red or blushing pink

gemstones are always a Valen-tine’s Day favorite. And as al-

ways, nothing says “I Love You” the way a diamond

does. You can never go wrong with designs glittering with colored gemstones or dazzling with fine diamonds to offer the pledge of fi-delity and everlasting love.

And, let’s not forget the gentlemen in your life. More and more men are enjoying intri-

cate, durable jewelry de-signs made of alternate

metals, karat gold or ster-ling silver. Men of all ages

Alexandrite is a relatively new gemstone with a noble history and is

extremely understated. Often referred to as nature’s magic trick, it can show different col-ors when viewed from different directions. Its unique and mys-terious color change abilities occur only with exposure to different light sources; green or blueish-green in sunlight and

red, purplish, or raspberry in in-candescent light.

Folklore surmises this mysteri-ous gemstone to be a very good omen. In critical situations it is said to strengthen the wearer’s intuition and inspire creativity and imagination.

Alexandrite is one of three birthstones for the month of June. It is also the gemstone for the 55th wedding anniversary.

Happy 2016! I trust the new year is off to a great start for you and your loved ones.

Recently a young lady and her mom came in to design a high school class ring. She didn’t want the traditional ring. However, the goal was to make a ring that would depict her high school colors. After learning more about her and what she would be comfortable wearing most of the time, a design was created. Her mom had a sapphire in a ring not being worn. The sapphire was polished and made to look like new before being mounted in the new ring. The senior now wears the sapphire and white gold ring with personalized engraving on the inside of the ring.

This story is being told not only because of the jewelry but because this young lady is also active in theatre at her school. My husband and I had the privilege of attending the production of Mary Poppins where she played Miss Lark. The production was excellent in every respect! Knowing these young people will be our leaders in the future is comforting. I highly recommend you attend any band or orchestra concert, or musical production at your local high school.

It is amazing to be able to design jewelry from those pieces not being worn and enjoyed. You are welcome to call and make an appointment.

Smile and be well! Glenna

This season, versatile, stackable jewelry gives you endless opportunities to mix and match different styles, textures, colors, and materials to create your own individual fashion

look.

Stackable Rings offer you more brilliant options than ever. New styles feature white or yellow gold bands each set with a different color of gemstone. Also, many of the newest stackable rings offer carved and sculptured details with brilliant enamels for color. Other popular ring styles combine various shapes of diamonds and colored gems including square, marquise, oval, and round.

Stackable Bangles are now appearing in high-fashion combinations of both thick and thin bangles in a variety of styles, metals, and finishes ranging from highly polished, to hammered and frosted. Today, diamond and colored gemstone pieces are being mixed with different textures in both gold and silver. Also, vividly colored enamels are being added to the mix to produce a custom collection that is exclusively your own.

Tips To Protect Your RubiesBrilliant red ruby is a form of the

mineral corundum which makes it a very hard, sparkling and durable gem.

Only diamond is harder! Although rubies are tough, they can be damaged by hard knocks and by abrasion on facets and girdle. This is often caused by careless handling which can produce scratches and chips.

But most damage to rubies is caused by rubbing against diamonds, so always store them separately.

Also, because of their hardness, rubies can easily scratch softer gemstones, which is another reason for separate storage.

Because of the natural flaws in ruby, it is advisable to avoid ultrasonic cleaners. The best cleaning technique is to use a mild detergent in warm water and and a soft brush (but not a toothbrush).

The Color Of Passion & LoveRed is the most exciting of all colors. Its bright, fiery hue stirs the

emotions and quickens the pulse like no other color and has symbolized passion since ancient times. Brilliant red gemstones

come in every shade of red imaginable, from scarlet and crimson to rose, vermilion, and flame. And today you can choose from a surprising number of exciting red gems in a wide range of sizes, cuts, shapes, and prices. Many are very affordable, too. Ask us about them!

Ruby. The most famous red gem, ranging in color from medium to dark red-violet. It’s hard, durable, and sparkling.

Garnet. A dazzling wine-red gem, closely resembling ruby. It’s hard, glittering, and surprisingly inexpensive.

Red Tourmaline. An intensely red gem with bright inner fire. Very durable and affordable.

Red Topaz. A bright, clear, and lively red gem with light to medium red color. Moderately priced.

Red Spinel. Has a brilliant, richly saturated red color. Often mistaken for ruby. Quite inexpensive.

No other gift is as special or personal as a gift of jew-elry set with the gemstone

dedicated to each person’s unique month of birth. For hundreds of years these precious gems were thought to bestow special pow-ers and reflect unique personality traits for both men and women born in a particular month of the year. Today’s birthstone jewelry comes in a wide range of exciting and fashionable styles.

FEBRUARYAmethyst. For those born in February, sin-cerity is the personal trait usually associated w i t h this beautiful form of precious quartz. Sparkling and transpar-ent amethyst can range from pale lilac to deep purple.

MARCHAquamarine. The name

derived from Latin means “seawater.” A member of the beryl gem fam-

ily, transparent, beautiful, blue aquamarine offers a tribute to the sea, capturing both its essence and spirit. Bloodstone. Actually not red at all, it is an opaque, deep, rich green with vivid bright red flecks and has been a favorite of men for centuries.

APRILDiamond. This pure white gem is synonymous with love and inno-

cence. Since ancient times, diamonds have

symbolized invincibility for those born in April because of their hardness and durability.

Heirloom-inspired jewelry designs are always favorites, always popular. They have a

unique, timeless, yet traditional beauty that is elegant, ladylike, and will never go out of style or cease to be eye-catching.

True heirloom jewelry is recognized as jewelry that has been passed down from family members throughout the gener-ations. Many of these vintage jewelry styles have a special characteristic that

seems to transcend time. Specific heirloom de-

sign themes such as geometrical and nature-in-

spired motifs are perennial classics of

enduring beauty. Characteristically made to withstand

time and resist corrosion, today’s heir-loom-styled jewelry is constructed with quality materials such as karat gold, sterling silver and platinum. Many designs feature precious and semi-precious gemstones, skill-fully and securely set into place.

The most popular heirloom-in-spired jewelry designs include Victo-

rian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles dating from 1837 to 1940.

Each has been updated to suit today’s lifestyle and feature many romantic de-

signs with intricate light and lacy open-work, flowing curves, and abstract patterns

with crisp linear lines.Circular brooches and pendants of karat gold are a good representation of the Vic-

torian and Edwardian era. Artistic, dra-matic curves, elongated flowing lines, and nature motifs are typi-cal of the Art Nouveau style. Elements of

Art Deco de-signs include white metals

with symmetrical geometric and abstract

shapes, embellished with bright colored gemstones. It was during the height of the Roaring 20’s that bold cocktail rings were

at the peak of popularity. To get the vintage look you love,

there are many present-day heir-loom-inspired designs to choose from. Drawing on the past is a fun

way to add a personal and refreshing touch to your jewelry wardrobe.
