June 11-22 Math, Marvels & More! (Completing Grades K-2)Totally new themes and adventures each year!

Liquid States, Number Traits & Creative GreatsWhat creeps up the side of a glass, creates its own drops, rises above the rim of a glass without spilling, and expands as it freezes? Water! Can we make it snow in the summertime? Fossilize raindrops? Create an explosive chemical reaction with water? In scientific terms – chromatography, surface tension skippers – we’ll be measuring up FUN! Then dive into the deep sea and design your own sea monsters for our nautical city! Explore the kaleidoscopic depths of aquatic creativity – drama, 3D art and more! And can you count without numbers or calculate without place value? Have you ever interpreted a Peruvian quipu or added in Babylonian? Math didn’t just happen: It had to be invented! Match wits with the ancients as we explore number systems from all corners of the globe. All the while, looking for the answer to the ultimate life question: How do you get inside a bubble?

ECO Academy (Completing Grades 3-8)ECO-nomics + ECO-logyIs business on your blueprint for life? Add our eco-savvy skills to your business acumen and step into the global marketplace! Each year, ECO Academy identifies frontrunners in financials, shining stars in sales and masters of marketing to create and develop a business from the ground floor. Spreadsheets, stock distribution, cash flow, product development, sales strategies, project management. Try the business area that suits your interests to produce a new and different product each year. Add environmental know-how to your business readiness: Tackle a key ecological problem, understand its impact, consider solutions. Is it sustainable consumption? Resource overuse? Climate destabilization? How do these issues impact business? Be ready to factor the costs of environmental problems into your business decisions. Be a leader in this year’s ECO Academy business concern!

Physical TrainingAn integral part of each Summer Academy experience, our physical training (PT) is no ordinary play time. Activities are directly linked to each Summer Academy. For example, in Math, Marvels and More, enjoy scooterboard math games and cooperative math aerobics. Space cadets will use teamwork in their cooperative games as they prepare for space travel. No matter the era or interest, PT always spells F-U-N!

June 25-July 6Jr. Science Searchers (Completing Kindergarten)From Outer Space to Ocean DepthsExplore the sun, moon, planets and stars! Develop the surface of the moon; look at its sea,

volcanoes and Apollo landings, and build your own miniature ‘moon rover.’ How far can you jump on the moon? Calculate your weight on other planets. Harness the energy of the sun in your solar oven to roast toasty marshmallows. Then plunge into the mysteries of the ocean. Meet sea animals, large and small, friendly and dangerous. How do their babies live? Make edible aquariums. How is a coral reef like a giant apartment building? Clean up a mini oil spill and find out how we can protect the ocean.

Ancient Academy (Completing Grades 3-8)Greek Social Life: Architecture, Ideas & ArtsCelebrate the Greek tradition! Explore the Iliad, with its epic characters Agamemnon and Achilles: king vs. a hero, a bully vs. a thinker? Will you consult the Oracle of Delphi about your battle or social plans? Reason with Plato, argue ethics with Aristotle, or challenge Socrates to a battle of wits. Was he leading youth astray? Try your hand at Greek architecture and sculpture, making hydria or skyphos vessels used for liquids, or other Grecian treasures! Untangle the family tree and hierarchy of the Greek gods, as we explore the influences and intrigues of this ancient world!

GRC’s Space Academy (Completing Grades 1-5)Sci-Fi to Real Life: Taking the Present to the FutureWould you design a futuristic spaceship to look like the first known interstellar asteroid Oumuamua or more like the Star Wars First Order Dreadnought? What would be the advantages of its shape? Construct scientific instruments that bend and manipulate light. How do astronomers use the electromagnetic spectrum to explore outer space? Perform experiments that answer questions about life in space. Program a robotic rover using LEGO® materials. Build your own rocket: Will it be a diversionary tactic for possible extraterrestrial life forms you ‘encounter’? Use the scientific method to bust myths about space.

GRC’s Advanced Space Academy (Completing Grades 6-8)Sci-Fi to Real Life: Meeting Up at the Juncture of Science BB-8 and R2D2 are helpful to the rebel cause, but is an intelligent robot really a good idea or a mistake? Does EmDrive bring us closer to warp drive? What other sci-fi stories are coming to life? How does the collision of two neutron stars advance the study of gravitational waves? Create an invention useful in space; how can we spin that off for use on earth? Think remote controls, Velcro, cinch bags and memory foam. Design a sci-fi space vehicle; how different is it from reality? What if your vehicle fails and you are stuck somewhere in flight? Will your engineering skills with LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 robotics help? Design, build, launch and evaluate the performance of your own rocket.

Jr. Science Searchers (Completing Kindergarten)From Dinosaurs to Tropical Rainforests

Don your paleontologist hat for dinosaur explorations! Hatch a dinosaur egg, while considering carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Ponder the continental drift. Construct fossils and explore body types and teeth structures of dinosaurs. How did they evolve in the different geologic periods and what made them extinct? Then join the ‘safari’ as we locate tropical rainforests on a map. Why is the rainforest important? How do plants, as well as animals like monkeys, bats and frogs, survive? What spices would you find? Make your own spice blend. Experience the unique sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest.

Ancient Academy (Completing Grades 3-8)Greek Party Life: Feasting, Festivals & PhilosophyLive the Greek high life as we recreate the Festival of Dionysius, food, fun and all! Join the thespians or be crowned a patron of the arts. Make masks, costumes and props for Greek tragedy and comedy. Explore the original sci-fi epic, the Odyssey, with strange monsters and weird situations facing our hero Odysseus! It’s the ‘eating-est’ epic in history! Did Alexander the Great follow Homer’s battle strategies? Can you write using the Greek alphabet? There’s always time for mayhem among the gods! Slave, free, stoic, cynic? Claim your role and experience the textures of everyday life in ancient Greece!

GRC’s Space Academy (Completing Grades 1-5) Missions Possible: Past, Present & Future – Travel through the GalaxyWhat if your future mission is traveling through a wormhole? How will you survive the high radiation and ‘exotic’ matter? Could you develop a robotic probe using LEGO® materials to test some of the challenges? How will the probe help in your explorations and mission safety? Design a space station for travel in the galaxy. Consider life support, communications and solar power. Experiment with magnets to consider ‘radiation’ and magnetospheric impact on our new base. What survival gear do you need? How will you feed guests? Construct and launch your

own rocket; will the space authorities intercept your renegade mission?

GRC’s Advanced Space Academy (Completing Grades 6-8)Missions Possible: Past, Present & Future – Adventure through SpaceAre you part of the Mars 100, scheduled for a mission to the red planet? What preparation do you need? How do you even pack for years in space? Will you return to earth? Examine the research from NASA’s study of the Kelly twins; what physiological implications exist for long-term space travel? Work with a team from ‘other countries’ to design a mission to a point in the solar system. Consider the Juno mission: How can we apply information about Jupiter’s origins, structure, atmosphere and magnetosphere? Can you program LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 to assist your exploration? Build a rocket, launch it and analyze the results.

Academy Americana (Completing Grades 1-3)Pack Your Wagon for the Trail West!Grab your gear, whittle down your stock, and get ready: We’re heading west! Use an authentic packing list from a real 1800s wagon train, and pack your own ‘Conestoga wagon.’ What games will you play on the trail? Will you make it to Oregon or die of dysentery? From trailblazing to homesteading, experience pioneer living, as they made butter, clothing, toys, quilts and crafts. Be part of the Gold Rush: Will you strike it rich? On the ranch, will you brand the herd or stock the chuckwagon? Explore the diaries of pioneers like Laura Ingalls and Lewis and Clark. Will their journals give us clues as we try modern-day geocaching? Seek your fortune in the frontier!
