What does it mean to be gifted? How is talent development different f rom giftededucation? What are acceleration and enrichment, and how do they work together tobenef it talented students?
NAGC says:Children are gifted when theirability is signif icantly above thenorm for their age.
What does it meanto be gifted?
There is no consensus on theexact number of gifted childrenin the U.S.A standard rule of thumb is thatstudents in the top 10%, inrelation to the norm, wouldbenef it f rom TAG services
Gifted education is usually focused on the“all-around gifted” student. However, notall high-ability students are gifted in everysubject. Some have very specif ic areas ofstrength in which their ability issignif icantly above the norm for their age,but other areas where they are closer tothe average student.
Talent development focuses on helpingdevelop students’ specif ic areas of talent.Talent development allows schools to casta wider net and provide services to morebright students who have needs beyondthe typical curriculum.

Acceleration:What are accelerationandenrichment,and how dothey worktogether?
Moving through the classroom curriculumat a faster pace or younger age than istypical. There are over 20 different formsof acceleration, including skipping agrade, moving into a higher grade for asingle subject only, Advanced Placementcourses, curriculum compacting, andtelescoping. This option is themost supported by research.
Enrichment:
Activities that add to or go beyond theexisting curriculum. They may occur in theclassroom or in a separate setting such asa pull-out program. Enrichmentactivities allow students to learn richer,broader, and more varied content.Many gifted and talented programs focusonly on enrichment activities. Otherexamples include after school classes andweekend or summer programs.
