Bernard McGinn
The Varieties of Vernacular Mysticism1350–1550
Part of the Presence of God series, which includes The Flowering of Mysticism, The Foundations of Mysticism, The Growth of Mysticism, and The Harvest of Mysticism in Medieval Germany. (See page 38 for the rest of the series.)
More than 25 years in the making, this volume uncovers the riches of one of the greatest periods of mystical wisdom in Christian history: the “vernacular” spirituality of the late medieval period in Europe. The compilation incorporates more than a century of new research from around the globe, demonstrating how this period gave rise to many mystical writers who remain influential today, including Julian of Norwich, Eckhart’s follower Jan van Ruusbroec, and Catherine of Siena. With unmatched knowledge of the primary works and scholarship, this study illustrates the unique genius of each mystical teacher as well as how they build on one another’s insights. Specific types of mysticism covered include Trinitarian, late medieval Italian, renaissance, and the golden age of English mysticism.

A momentous era in the Christian faith
The Presence of God Series by Bernard McGinn
Bernard McGinn is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology and of the History of Christianity in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. He is the author of Early Christian Mystics and The Mystical Thought of Meister Eckhart. He lives in Chicago.
“ What dawns on you as you progress through McGinn’s magisterial retrieval of fourteenth and fifteenth century developments in “mystical theology” is how seriously Ruusbroec, Catherine of Siena, Julian of Norwich and a host of lesser figures have to be taken as theologians. Much more than a history of western Christian mysticism, this volume calls for and supplies a major revaluation of theology in the late medieval Christian church.” –Dr. Denys Turner, Professor of Religion at Yale Divinity School
Joan Chittister, O.S.B.The Rule of BenedictA Spirituality for the 21st Century
“By offering informed commentary that links St. Benedict’s Rule with contemporary ques-tions (stewardship, relationships, authority, community, balance, work, simplicity, prayer, and spiritual and psychological develop-ment), Sr. Joan succeeds in her task of making an ancient document accessible to a modern reading public.”–New Oxford Review

Why classic spirituality? Why Ignatian spirituality?
Fr. Gallagher: Not many decades ago, the use of classic method in prayer appeared confining: such constraints once removed, a person would be truly free to pray in the Spirit. Uninstructed “freedom,” however, has proven inadequate, and today we witness renewed interest in classic teaching about prayer—classic, because such teaching answers the perennial questions: How do I begin to pray? Which approach is best suited for me? How may I understand my experience at prayer? My struggles in prayer? The artist taught by a skilled master is truly free to create beauty; the spiritual person, taught by a skilled master, is truly free to pray. Among these masters, St. Ignatius of Loyola excels in offering wise, flexible, and effective teaching about prayer.
In the few years since his first book appeared, Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V. has emerged as one of the greatest interpreters of the spirituality of Ignatius of Loyola. Tens of thousands of readers have already turned to Fr. Gallagher’s books for reli-able, inspirational, and clear explanations of some of the most important aspects of Christian spirituality. Whether you’re a spiritual director, priest or minister, long-time spiritual seeker, or beginner, Fr. Gallagher’s books have much to offer you in different moments in life. Henri J. M. Nouwen
In the Name of JesusReflections on Christian Leadership
When Henri Nouwen moved to L’Arche Daybreak, a community where intellectu-ally disabled people and their caregivers live, work, and learn together, he found that outward qualifications and symbols of status and relevance had little meaning to people whose disabilities kept them very focused on the present moment. The beloved priest and author shares the experiences and insights that he gained at L’Arche and helps us see how we can refocus our lives so that our actions reflect what is truly meaningful.
The book is drawn from a presentation on Christian leadership that Nouwen made at the Center for Human Development. Bill, an intellectually disabled member of the Daybreak community traveled with Nouwen to Washington D.C. for the presentation and Bill’s participation, both on the trip and at the conference, bring a depth and poignant humor to this little powerhouse of a book.

This experience was and, in many ways, is still the most important experience of my new life, because it forced me to rediscover my true identity. These broken, wounded, and completely unpretentious people forced me to let go of my relevant self—the self that can do things, show things, prove things, build things—and forced me to reclaim that unadorned self in which I am completely vulnerable, open to receive and give love regardless of any accomplishments.
I am telling you all this because I am deeply convinced that the Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self.

Uncovering science’s agenda in scriptural study
Scott W. Hahn and Benjamin Wiker
Politicizing the BibleThe Roots of Historical Criticism and the Secularization of Scripture 1300-1700
Penetrating the pretense of objectivity often presented in secular studies, Hahn and Wiker bring to light the appropriation of scripture by politically motivated interests and show connections between approaches employed at divinity schools today and the philosophies of Machiavelli, Hobbes, and Locke.
“Over the last 20 centuries, no book has been researched, pondered, and prayed over as intensely as the Bible. Dr. Hahn has done all these things himself; but, more importantly, he has studied the work of many genera-tions of Christians and Jews who have gone before him. Then he gathered the best of all that study to help you in your own reading. Because we’re Catholic, we need to become biblically literate. We need to know the Bible well because we hunger for abundant life— because we want to know Jesus, which is the same thing. Scott Hahn does a superb job of feeding his readers with the Word of God in this immensely useful guide.” —Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., archbishop of Philadelphia

Scott W. Hahn is a professor of theology and scripture at Franciscan University of Steubenville, the founder and director of the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology, and the author of numerous books. He lives in Steubenville, Ohio.
Benjamin Wiker is an author and senior fellow with the Envoy Institute of Belmont Abbey College, the Discovery Institute, and the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. Among his books are A Meaningful World and Moral Darwinism. He lives in Hopedale, Ohio.
“ Dr. Scott Hahn has a way, which is both readable and scholarly, of inspiring his readers to discover the great treasure of Scripture. His insights and contributions to biblical scholarship in this work will not go unnoticed or unappreciated. With the touch of a master’s pen, he explains some very important and yet complex concepts concerning the reliability, efficacy, meaning, and importance of Sacred Scripture for Catholics. We should rejoice and thank God for the wondrous gift of God’s revelation to us in Sacred Scripture. We can also be grateful for scholars such as Scott Hahn, who help us open the Scriptures in continuity with the living Tradition of the Church.” –Donald W. Wuerl, STD, former Archbishop of Washington

The Bad Catholic’s CatechismA Faithful, Fun-Loving Look At Catholic Dogmas, Doctrines, and Schmoctrines
Masquerading behind the guise of the old-fashioned Catechism that generations of Catholic school kids in plaid skirts or clip-on ties had to memorize, this candid handbook provides a witty take on the teachings of the Catholic faith. Objections from relativist, New Atheist, dissenting Catholic, and other points of view are featured, with intellectually sound questions and bracingly funny answers.
Penned by a Yale-educated author who worked both in the mainstream, secular media as well as for Catholic outlets, the study reveals the whole range of contemporary criticisms aimed at the church—and how to answer them in kind. Using both a rapier wit and the strong left hook of a blue-collar kid from Queens, this guide defends its faith with good humor and sincere respect at every turn while illustrating the difficulties modern believers face.

Q: “Why do you call your books The Bad Catholic’s Guides?”
John Zmirak: “The answer is honesty. Take our faith seriously, and you’ll find yourself falling short, and conceive of yourself as a sinner. I also think that humor is the best catechist. Modern Americans don’t lose their faith by reading Jack Chick pamphlets or Christopher Hitchens books, but after watching dozens of George Carlin routines that render the Church ridiculous. In these books I turn the tables, and show up the absurdity of the World, the Flesh, and the Devil… so people can laugh themselves right back into good habits… maybe even monastic habits.”

Remembering Father Dean Brackley, S.J. (1946–2011)
Father Dean Brackley moved to San Salvador University in 1990 to take up the work of six Jesuit priests who had recently been murdered there. His tireless efforts brought a spirit of peace to an extremely tense and volatile situation. Before settling in El Salvador, Brackley taught at Fordham University and was employed by South Bronx People for Change, a church-sponsored group that offered rehabilitation programs to drug addicts, helped tenants organize, and mediated community and law enforcement disputes.
Brackley died of cancer after 11 years of teaching, writing, and devoted service in El Salvador. His life is a testament to his transformative vision for personal and social change in the world.

Are you sitting down? This next point is a bit of a shock to the system for some people. You might want to make sure you have something soft and cushy to faint on just in case you’re overcome. Ready? Okay. In addition to having the power to make the common holy, Holy Sex has the power to be sacramental and redemptive.
Most people have one of three reactions to this. 1. They may laugh out loud at the ridiculousness of it. 2. They may be appalled and offended. 3. They may stare at you, nodding politely until you
stop speaking and then ask you to pass the salt.

“ Fasting is experienced as the process of one’s own development.” –Hellmut Luetzner
“Every person carries within the ability to change to fasting mode. We just need to relearn how to activate the switch. Certainly, a trained body switches more easily than when one fasts for the first time. The formula “Fasting = Living without Food” is a natural part of our being on this earth. Therefore, it seems strange that most people still do not know about this possibility. The idea that one can live without food and even be productive seems un-fathomable. Some fear hunger, sickness, even death. While such prejudices still seem to hold up, we just need to look around in nature to learn better.”
F R O M T H E N E W L I F E F A S T I N G G U I D E :
Dr. Hellmut Luetzner specializes in internal medicine with a focus on fasting. From early childhood, he learned about fasting from his parents who were regular practitioners of the discipline. Since 1975, he has lead and developed the Fasting clinic in Ueberlingen at the Lake of Constance, a center for practical fasting in Germany. Parallel to a TV series on the subject, Dr. Luetzner produced this bestselling book that has been updated and further enhanced over the last quarter century. Together with Dr. Luetzner’s cookbook, developed with a renowned Berlin chef for “Eating after Fasting,” this book has become the main textbook for the education of Fasting Counselors as offered by the Academy of Fasting in Jena, Germany.

Why Catholics Can’t SingThe Culture of Catholicism and the Triumph of Bad Taste
In this informative and entertaining critique of music in the Catholic church, Day provides an accurate look at what passes for culture in American Catholicism, particularly as expressed in church music. Day takes aim at the “Irish-American” repertoire of songs that comprise Catholic music in this country, and assails other less felicitous liturgical practices in vogue since Vatican II while making positive suggestions for nurturing the latent vitality he perceives in the American Catholic community.

Gateway to HopeAn Exploration of Failure
This poignant, simply-written and persuasive book by a cloistered nun speaks eloquently to those of us “in the world” who strive daily to make difference—who aim high enough that sometimes we fall short, who agonize over our mistakes, who demand of God explanations why our worthy projects haven’t panned out as we’d expected. It speaks to those mourn-ing lost family members, failed relationships, thwarted hopes, and careers that took a turn we never would have chosen—in other words, it speaks to everyone.
