CATHERINE ALVAREZSJPD’s Leader and FinestWhat are the things that you feel you have contributed to the local community?Being a police officer I basically contributed my life. Any day could be my last and I accept that. While I work I try and be the most genuine person I can. I try and be account-able and own up to all my actions good and bad. I try to show humanity and selflessness. Its actually liberating. To do something as long as you believe in what you are doing, its liberating. There is no ego, no pride, and at times no effort, it’s the simple joy of doing something you love.

Why do you feel you were selected for Local Community Unsung Hero?I honestly don’t have any idea. There are so many people that do so many amazing things. Not just police officers, but firemen, paramedics, and just your average citizen.

What should be the roll of the Police in the Community?I have found in my 19 years that police have taken the role of counselor, medic, social worker, advocate. 80 percent of my job is

talking to people helping them solve their problems and trying to find resources to carry them through when I leave for the day. I know there is a great distrust with the police since even the 1950-60s. But I hope for those who have called on us, we have answered their call with more care and resolution than they can expect .

CATHERINE ALVAREZLiderazgo y Excelencia

ASESINOS Wi-Fi Oficina Hogar

You might be surprised what everyday items and situations are bringing your network to a crawl. Here are the top 4 common issues impacting office and home Wi-FI.

1. Kitchen appliances. Major appliances eat away at Wi-Fi signal strength. Refrigerators and especially microwaves provide interference, so keep equipment out of the range of the kitchen.

2. Too many separate Wi-Fi networks. It’s not uncommon in some office environments to rig up several different routers running on different channels with different passwords to increase coverage. Set your system so each router or access point is on the right channel for limited interference.

3. More devices. Most routers tap out at 10-20 devices. With today’s explosion of tablets, smartphones, laptops and wireless office equipment, bandwidth gets absorbed quickly.

4. People? Absolutely. The human body is 50-65 percent water, and crowds of people at an office party or in a conference room can be

Retire at 65? Think Again!Thirty years ago, people typically started work at a fairly young age (age 20), worked to 65 and then retired. Statistical-ly they lived to age 72, so they had many years to earn and save, and just a few years to spend.Typical retirement age has been 65 for a long time. In developed countries like Canada, the US, and Australia, social retirement benefits only start to kick in at 65.But today, our statistical lifespan in these developed countries has increased to 78 years. Unfortunately, that doesn’t neces-sarily mean we have a whopping 13 years to enjoy retirement (statistically speaking). Instead, many seniors are now choosing, or being forced by finan-cial circumstances, to work until 70+.Not to be left behind, governments are slowly increasing the retirement age before benefits kick in. The cost savings are immense, even for a 6 month delay. Who knows… as life spans increase, perhaps our grandkids won’t be able to collect bene fits until they’re close to 70!

¡Piensa otra vez!

HOW TO BE A LEADERIn Your Community

What are the responsibility of the Local Community Leader?I think everything comes back to account-ability and ownership. If everyone just owned up to their mistakes as well as their good deed, or what they could do for their community I think it would make the community stronger.

What do you think is the roll of the leader in the community?I believe that the roll of a leader is simple as just being accountable. Taking respon-sible for the bad as well as the good. I think people tend to follow those they trust and nothing says trust like taking responsi-ble for your mistakes. I think if everyone just stepped up and was accountable for themselves, their house, and their commu-nity it would have a trickle effect to the entire community/city of San Jose.

What do you feel that children can do to be a leader?I would say the same accountability and being brave enough to speak up when they see a wrong that needs to be righted. Bully has always been a big issue and now in this day and age with social media I think it makes Bullying worse and more cowardly since you can do it massively and more anonymously in the privacy of your own home with social websites.

What are the traits one should have in order to be selected as the leader?I think accountability, humility, and sinceri-ty are all important traits in a leader. If you hold yourself accountable there is extreme honesty in that fact which makes you humble. Sincerity shows you care, you do not lead for the sake of leading or for the accolades, you lead because you are doing something you care about and you believe in.

How do you feel about the coming Presidential Election? My mother taught me never to talk of politics and religion. She taught me to respect other people’s opinions and that there is always a time and place to speak about these certain topics.

Cómo ser un Lider En tú Comunidad

What are the responsibility of the Local Community Leader?I think everything comes back to account-ability and ownership. If everyone just owned up to their mistakes as well as their good deed, or what they could do for their community I think it would make the community stronger.
