AND THEY’RE OFF! Last year I wrote about our vision for renewed space that would support the dynamic plans for our museum’s future. Note the words: vision, plans, future. But now we are truly on our way. Each day we are closer to making our visions and plans a new reality.

What a thrill it was to stand on the steps of the Gibbes, on October 10, and welcome many of you and, in a sense, the entire community to the groundbreaking for our renewal project! We—all of us—have contributed to the realization of a vision that will help transform our Museum and the visual arts in Charleston.

Many of our earliest and most generous donors were present at the groundbreaking. It was great to be able to share the excitement of the moment with them, because, of course, no project like this gets off the ground without these special friends.

Mayor Riley contributed his thoughts about the foundational importance of the arts and the Gibbes. The Mayor, Councilmember Mike Seekings, CFO Steve Bedard, Corporation Counsel Charleton deSaussure, and in fact the entire City Council have been great partners and supporters. It is inspiring to be able to come together with our government in this way to support the arts!

As I introduced our incomparable Executive Director Angela Mack, I caught her off guard with words of appreciation. I stated that her vision, grit, and determination are at the center of our renewal —and at the center of the visual arts in Charleston.

So we are truly on our way. If you haven’t invested in the future, it’s not too late to contribute to the capital campaign. In fact we need your support. Join us! It will feel good! The arts and the Gibbes belong to everyone in our community.

WE HAVE REACHED A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE in the history of the Gibbes Museum of Art. It’s hard to believe that a little over three years ago we launched a five-year $13.4 million capital campaign to provide funds for facility renovation and programmatic expansion that would achieve diverse revenue streams and financial sustainability. Today, with $10.5M raised, we are well on our way to reaching our goal of creating a center committed to the artistic process, from art-making, to exhibitions, to collections acquisitions.

When you step through the doors of the Gibbes in spring 2016, you’ll see that the museum is dedicated to education and community

engagement. The Gibbes will expand outreach by offering an admission-free first floor that serves as a hub of creative activity with on-site artist studios and classrooms for preK-12th grade students. On the second floor, visitors will experience exhibition halls for the permanent collection, and special galleries for modern and contemporary art on the third floor. The redesigned Lenhardt garden will offer a perfect space for corporate meetings, intimate dinners, and large events. Moving upstairs, the restored Campbell Rotunda and soaring galleries will showcase sculpture, the Rivers Collection of Southern Decorative Art, and our signature genre paintings and stunning portraits.

All of this is happening because of you! Thank you, each and every one of you, for your belief, hard work, and generous support. Over 300 donors have participated in our leadership campaign, and we still continue to receive those most important gifts. Time and time again we hear that great cities deserve great museums. I could not agree more! But we still need your help. While we have made great progress, the job is not complete. Please join us in this effort to transform the Gibbes into a center for the creation, display, and interpretation of the visual arts.

“The purpose of the Gibbes renovation project is to bring together two components of the visual arts—CREATIVITY and the FINISHED PRODUCT—to educate and introduce the next generation to the POWER OF THE VISUAL ARTS and how it can change lives.”

CURATORIAL AND COLLECTIONS

AcquisitionsSara Arnold | Curator of Collections

THIS PAST YEAR thirteen new works of art were acquired for the Museum’s permanent collection. Major highlights include the pur-chase of two rare portraits by Colonial era artist Henrietta de Beaulieu Dering Johnston. Only forty works attributed to this significant female artist have been formally documented, and the Gibbes was fortunate to add two exam-ples of her Irish portraits to its collection to compliment the eight Charleston portraits already making the Gibbes the largest public repository of her work. While the identities of the sitters are unconfirmed, the paintings are thought to depict James Barry, the 4th Earl of Barrymore and his wife Hon. Elizabeth Boyle. Painted in 1704, just a few years prior to Johnston’s voyage to America, these delicate pastel portraits greatly amplify our knowledge of the artist’s skill and experience.

ExhibitionsPam Wall | Curator of Exhibitions

THE PAST FISCAL YEAR BROUGHT RECORD-SETTING ATTENDANCE for the Museum’s special exhibitions program. From September 27, 2013 to January 5, 2014 the Gibbes hosted Photography and the American Civil War. Organized by the Metropolitan

Museum of Art in New York, this major traveling exhibition included over 200 photographs. Related public programs were well attended and attracted substantial local and national media. The success continued with two exhibitions that explored different aspects of nineteenth-century art, Romantic Spirits: Nineteenth Century Paintings of the South from the Johnson Collection and The Great Wave: Japonisme in Charleston, both on view from January 17 to March 23, 2014. The year ended with two contemporary exhibitions, John Westmark: Narratives and Beyond the Darkroom: Photography in the 21st Century, from April 4 to August 3, 2014. John Westmark made two trips to Charleston to participate in public programs and left a mark on our audience—many of whom have since become collectors of his work.

UPPER IMAGE | Untitled (portrait of a woman), 1704, by Henrietta de Beaulieu Dering Johnston (ca. 1674–1729); pastel on paper; museum purchase with funds provided by the Eliza Huger Kammerer Fund

Another major highlight was the purchase of two remarkable works of neoclassical sculp-ture. This purchase was made possible by William and Susanne McGuire and the McGuire Family Foundation, who, in 2011, established an acquisition fund to bolster the museum’s sculpture collection in preparation for the Gibbes reopening. Recognizing that the Rotunda was originally intended as a sculpture gallery, the McGuires have been working closely with Gibbes staff members to find appropriate sculpture for the space. This summer, full size busts of Faith, by sculptor Hiram Powers and Helen of Troy by Pierce Francis Connelly were secured as part of this effort.

Finally, as part of our effort to develop an outstanding collection of contemporary art by southern artists, the Gibbes purchased Wave Upon Wave (2014) from the recent solo exhibition John Westmark: Narratives (organized by the Gibbes and on view from April 4–August 3, 2014). The Gibbes was also the beneficiary of eleven generous gifts of art listed on page 18.

THE COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE of packing, moving, and storing the permanent collection (over 10,000 objects) in preparation for the Gibbes renovation. Planning for the move began in 2011 and involved the coordination of art handling crews, fine art transit companies, and multiple storage locations. The Gibbes was fortunate to secure storage space for the collection at The Charleston Museum, The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. Transport Consultants International assisted me with the complicated logistics of this move.

Removal of the collection occurred in four phases. During the first phase (April 2014) art handlers wrapped the Museum’s collection of 4000+ works-on-paper and approximate ly 100 pieces of sculpture. All packing activities took place behind the scenes, and the Museum remained open to the public with little disruption. These collections were shipped to the South Carolina State Museum. Over the summer the crew returned to pack over 500 paintings and several large sculptures. The Garden and Balcony galleries were closed and set up as packing stations to provide the

ample space required. Museum visitors were able to observe the packing process while still enjoying exhibitions in the Main and Rotunda galleries. Packed works were shipped to the High Museum of Art Collections Storage Facility. The third phase of collection packing occurred at the end of the summer. The art handling team returned to pack oversize paintings and all objects on view in The Charleston Story installation. Four tractor-trailers loaded with artwork were sent to the High Storage Facility in early September. The final phase involved the relocation of more than 600 miniature portraits to secure storage at The Charleston Museum; several miniatures will be displayed there during the storage period. Although the art move was a major focus of the past year, my regular collection-related duties continued unabated, including the coordination of logistics for exhibitions such as Photography and the American Civil War from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This complex exhibition brought with it a team of curators, conservators, and registrars who spent several weeks working with Gibbes collections staff on the complex installation. Finally, I continued to be actively involved in many professional development initiatives including service to the Southeastern Museums Conference Annual Meeting Program Committee, as a Peer Reviewer for the Museum Assessment Program and most recently, as the President of the South Carolina Federation of Museums (through 2016).

MUSEUM EDUCATION FOR ALL AGES included a variety of programs from hands-on learning to artist demonstrations. Adult and teen classes offered by working artists ranged from oil painting to photography and art history. This year we continued to offer after-school classes at Hazel Parker Community Center, and our annual summer art camp at the Circular Congregational Church. There were a record number of school tours for the groundbreaking exhibition, Photography and the American Civil War.

In-school programs are an important component of our edu-cational programming and this year we continued to facilitate EYE SPY at St. Andrews School of Math & Science, Springfield Elementary, Drayton Hall Elementary, North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary, Charleston County First Steps, and James Island Elementary. This fall we added Meeting Street Academy. ART TO GO was held at Angel Oak Elemen-tary, Mitchell Elementary, Pinehurst Elementary, Goodwin Elementary, Murray LaSaine Elementary and this fall we added Lambs Elementary, James Simons Elementary, and

EDUCATION { 08 }

E.B. Ellington Elementary. EYE-OPENER is a program held in partnership with Engaging Creative Minds that has been offered at Ladson Elementary, C.E. Williams Middle School, and Charleston Development Academy. This fall Angel Oak Elementary and Jennie Moore Elementary were added. Our JUNIOR DOCENT PROGRAM moved forward with stu-dents from Charleston Day, Ashley Hall, and Charleston Collegiate School.

A team of more than twenty museum educators, docents, and teaching artists received ongoing training from curators and College of Charleston professors John Hull and Marian Mazzone. I attended the Southeastern Museums Conferences in Savannah, GA and in Knoxville, TN, as well as the South Carolina Federation of Museums conference in Camden, SC.

EDUCATION

Mary Whyte Art Educator AwardESTABLISHED IN 2007, the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award is designed to recognize a high school visual arts teacher in the state of South Carolina who demonstrates superior com-mitment to their students and to their craft. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $2,500 and is administered and presented annually by the Gibbes. Donna Shank Major, from the Fine Arts Center of Greenville County, was the 2014 Mary Whyte Art Educator Award Winner. Ms. Major is the instructor for 2D and 3D Design courses in the ARMES program at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC.

Ms. Major graduated from Converse College with an M.Ed. She has been teaching art for 18 years and works in a variety of media and techniques including clay, printmaking, paint-ing, and bookmaking. She has received a Fulbright Memorial Fund grant to study in Japan, and fellowships to study at Arrowmont School of Crafts, and Penland. Her work has been exhibited in shows including Open Studios with the Metropolitan Arts Council, the Belton Juried Professional Show, and the Union Juried Professional Show.

The winner was announced and awarded at the South Carolina Art Educators Association annual meeting on November 21, 2014 in Greenville, SC.

1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art

AWARDS

FOUNDED BY SOCIETY 1858, an auxiliary group of the Gibbes, and awarded annually with a cash prize of $10,000, the 1858 Prize acknowledges an artist whose work demon-strates the highest level of artistic achievement in any media, while contributing to a new understanding of art in the South. This year, over 250 artists from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia submit-ted applications.

Sonya Clark was the 2014 winner of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art. Her work examines contem-porary issues of gender and race through a variety of mediums. Clark holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, and chairs the Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Her work has been exhibited in over 250 museums and

galleries in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, Australia, and throughout the United States. She uses objects such as cloth, hair, and combs to give voice to the complexity of American identity and history. Simple objects become an

interface for dialog that ranges from the vernacular to the po-litical to the poetic. Clark was recently named the Juried Grand Prize co-win-ner of the prestigious 6th Annual ArtPrize.

James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award

THE BOARD AND STAFF of the Gibbes bestow the James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award at the Annual Meeting in May to the person who exemplifies Gibbes’ support of the creative arts. Mickey Bakst was the 2014 award recipient. A staunch proponent of Charleston char-ities since moving to the Holy City in October 2004, Mickey is a 40-year food and beverage veteran and the General Manager of Charleston Grill. Bakst has long been a sup-porter of the Gibbes, and has contributed his time, talents, connections, and energy into making the Street Party one of Charleston’s most sought-after events. Bakst is known for his graciousness, generosity, and ability to connect people, and these traits directly translate to the complex job of coordinating Charleston’s top restaurants and bev-erage providers for this fundraising event. In his spare time, Bakst devot es his energy to a variety of Lowcountry initiatives including Feed the Need, Chefs Across America, Dine for Nine, and Benefit for Katrina. When Crisis Ministries had to close down their food service one day a week, Bakst stepped in, forming a coalition to provide the meals that the shelter needed. Every year, a different area restaurant takes over the meal service and feeds more than 400 people. Three years later, Feed the Need has gone nation al. Bakst is pictured here with the love of his life, Ellen.

“Every city deserves a great art museum because art

museums INSPIRE us, they CHALLENGE us, NOURISH us,

and they give us PEACE. Human beings are creative

species and when we come to a great art museum our

PERSONAL CREATIVITY is brought to the forefront.

The renovations will make this 109 year-old building

seem brand new. We will see the Gibbes as we’ve never

seen it before and I can’t wait for that moment.”

— MAYOR JOSEPH P. RILEY JR.
