The Summer Issue2015giardino-ascona.ch

Fly like an eagle “Hotel Giardino sits at the point where Switzerland‘s last mountains meet Italy‘s first lemon trees.” Munich author Max Scharnigg began an article about our hotel with these wonderful words. Another writer aptly said that the go-slow approach was integral to the concept here long before the phrase became a trend, and that Giardino is an unforgettable world. That is precisely what this magazine is about – giving you a sneak peek behind the scenes to find out what makes us tick. Restaurant Manager Mauro Pacchioli is, for instance, not only a talented singer, who sometimesimpresses diners at the Aphrodite restaurant by singing an aria, but also a passionate pilot. Guests lucky enough to fly with him over Lago Maggiore still rave about their enthralling experience hours later. We‘re ready and looking forward to the coming season – with everything from the best bicycles for a tour through the Valle Maggia to the outstanding service provided by every single member of staff. Enjoy the read. Enjoy Giardino.

Das Tessin steht jetzt in voller

Pracht. Gelb leuchten die Magnolien

im Park Gambarogno, weiss glänzen

die Teepflanzen auf dem Monte

Verità, und in Locarno tragen die

rosafarbenen Kamelien eigenwillige

Namen wie «Gay Baby» oder

«General Colletti».

Ticino is now at its blooming best,

with the magnolias in Park

Gambarogno glowing gold, white

tea plants flowering at Monte Verità

and pink camellias in Locarno with

outlandish names from “Gay Baby”

to “General Colletti”.

Mademoiselle Coco never left the house without a camellia pinned to her suit jacket. It was her trademark. And the fashion house Chanel still sells camellia pins made from cotton or tulle today – some dazzlingly bright, others embellished with diamonds. To really experience the glory of this flower, you should visit in spring, as the FAZ author Elsemarie recently wrote while waxing lyrical about the Lago Maggiore region. In Locarno’s Camellia Park, the tightly folded petals unravel from green buds like butterflies from a cocoon. They are often pink and delicate, occasionally orange and rarely yellow and violet. Some are as big as a child’s head, some are incredibly fragrant, while others have unusual names like “Gay Baby” and “General Colletti”. Camellias can tower up to six metres high, and the climate for them around Lago Maggiore is ideal.“ The lake breathes in the warmth of summer and breathes it out again during winter”, says Nazzareno Luini, gardener at Giardino Ascona. Even tea can grow in these conditions, as can be seen at Monte Verità above Ascona, which literally translates as “mountain of truth”. Today you can experience tea ceremonies here and see where the dancer Rudolf Laban opened his sum-mer school for the movement arts in 1913, where the artists would leap around naked. Art collector

Eduard von der Heydt later received noblemen and bohemians at the mountain, while post-war Chancellor of Germany Konrad Adenauer used to hang out here in the 1950s. The chancellor was most amazed of all about the Brissago Islands, which are also famous for their botanical gardens, where palms, eucalyptus, mimosa and bamboo thrive. Hamburg entrepreneur Max Emden, whose motto was “Life is also an art”, bought it for himself and a flock of young beauties in 1927. Apparently there were plenty of goings-on behind the mimosa bushes. Emden installed a Roman bath, from which there is still a fabulous vista of Ascona. “One of the most beautiful views in Europe”, according to Adenauer. Looking in the other direction is Gambarogno, where the gardener Otto Eisenhut laid out a botanical garden in his own unique fashion. A trail weaves through a jungle-like thicket of purple wisteria and more than 100 magnolias, some of which have yellow blossoms – a rarity. Camellias, too, shine brightly in the spring sunshine. Coco Chanel received her first camellia from her lover and muse, the English entrepreneur and polo player Arthur “Boy” Capel. With his help, she opened her first boutique in Paris. To honour this love, she created a flower that never dies.

The road racing cyclist Jens Voigt was famous for having a go at his aches and

pains. “Shut up, legs!” was one of his clas-sics. And fellow pro cyclist Rudi Altig once

claimed that “a racing cyclist has to look after his backside better than his face.” But with the bicycles avail-

able at Giardino Ascona, guests don’t have these worries. Whether you opt for a city or mountain bike, the top-quality bikes are per-fectly equipped for comfortable tours, with terrific saddles, first-rate gear hubs and wide tyres for easy touring. “I want guests to come back with unforgettable impressions of the region”, says Roger Gross, who produced the bikes in his factory in Hünibach. He made sure that the bikes were not only practical but pretty to look at too. That’s why they are completely white – as nature in Ticino is colour-ful enough. The Giardino Ascona team can advise guests on numer-ous routes. A real beauty, for instance, is the one leading into the Valle Maggia to Ponte Brolla. Here the Maggia river thrashes its way past narrow gorges with bizarre rock formations. A Roman bridge, 33 metres high, lopes across one of the gorges, and gave the place its name. A guided tour also features on the activity pro-gramme: General Manager Wolfram Merkert regularly takes guests on the stretch from Giardino Ascona to Minusio, which leads along the lakefront, past the harbour and historical villas to the terrace of the Giardino Lago hotel. There, the team is waiting with cool drinks. This is cycling at its beautiful best!

WE HAVE LIFT-OFF!

8 Giardino Ascona

As part of the Guided by Giardino programme, Restaurant Manager Mauro Pacchioli takes guests on a scenic flight over Lago Maggiore, and also hits the heights in the evenings by singing an aria at the Aphrodite restaurant.

Bei «Guided by Giardino» nimmt Restaurant Manager Mauro Pacchioli Gäste

“Most important of all”, says Mauro, “is that you don’t panic if the engine suddenly stops. This plane lands just like a glider.” What a statement! And Mauro Pacchioli can’t hide a little smirk saying this. He is well aware that we are in Switzerland, after all, where planes run as smoothly as clockwork. And the 44-year-old Italian is also an experienced pilot. He has already taken off and landed more than 500 times with the little white Piper Warrior, which is ready and waiting for us in front of the hangar of the sport and military airport in Locarno.

Mauro Pacchioli is a multi-talented, passionate man. He breeds rare plants and parrots, and he attended the Helvetic Music Institute Bellinzona to become a classically trained singer under the tutelage of a tenor from La Scala in Milan. In Giardino’s Aphrodite restaurant, the maître d’hôtel often treats guests to an aria over dinner. Hotel guests only recognise him in a suit jacket. Now he is wearing a bomber jacket, Ray Ban shades and a baseball cap. He hops into the plane and starts the engine. A final safety check. Mauro focuses on the cockpit, fiddles with a couple of buttons and contacts the tower, then we roll down the runway. To the right is a petrol station, a bit further along is a large military helicopter. We stop briefly. Just to check the pilot ramps up the engine in neutral gear. “Everything is working picobello”, like a dream, he says. If the engine was a singer, it would definitely be a baritone.

“YOU HAVE TO FLY SUCH AN OLD SIGNORA WITH ELEGANCE AND A SENSITIVE TOUCH.”

The tower gives the okay. Mauro moves the gas regulator forward and the plane accelerates, going quicker and quicker. Lights blur

into a single line to the right and left of the runway. We have lift-off! What a feeling! Heading south of Locarno we fly over the

green Brissago Islands and then over Ascona, picking up speeds of 180 kmph. We pick out the boats in the harbour and the promenade,

and even the bohemian free spirits that once danced in search of true happiness atop Monte Verità would be easy to spot from this

height. A few seconds later we fly over the Hotel Giardino, where Mauro has been working for the past 20 years. We are

wearing headphones and speaking with microphones.

What brought you to flying? “As a child I always used to like playing with remote control model planes”, says Mauro.

“Then years ago a friend of mine from Vienna came to Locarno for the weekend. He called me up and said that he had just landed.

I didn’t find out that he had flown the plane himself until dinner that evening. And when I brought him back to the airport on Sunday

and he stepped into the plane and flew away at the age of just 24, I thought: How cool, that would also be right up my street.”

He soon asked at Giardino if he could have Saturdays off during the day, and three years later he had his pilot’s licence.

For his final test he had to fly alone to Sion in French-speaking Switzerland. His longest flight to date was to Genoa.

«Nun ja, also nein, vielleicht doch. Was muss ich tun?»

Zerklüftete Felsen in zuweilen dichtem Dschungel. Wasserläufe. Bergketten.

We also cross the border to Italy at an altitude of around 1,800 metres. Visibility is perfect, with views reaching deep into the Alps. We fly at lofty heights above land and people. Below us is the little town of Verbania and its pretty historical buildings, one of which is home to Eros Buratti, the world’s best cheesemonger. Further to the right, the botanical gardens of Villa Taranto drift into view, where the camellias are already in bloom. Konrad Adenauer once donated a fir tree to the estate. “Do you fancy taking over the controls for a while?” says Mauro.“Erm, no, or then again, yes. What do I have to do?” I follow Mauro’s instructions and calmly hold the control wheel in my hands. “As a pilot, you need courage, discipline, concentra-tion and respect for people and the plane. You have to fly such an old signora with elegance and a sensitive touch”, says the pilot. I push the control wheel forward and the old lady dips and flies directly towards the Borromean Islands or rather to the largest of the group – Isola Bella. And she is a real beauty, too. The island’s summer palace and terraced park spread pictur-esquely out before us. Napoleon was once there. I carefully pull the control wheel back towards me and we gain height again. Who would ever want to drive a car after such an adventure?

“FLYING IS LIKE SINGING. IT TAKES ME TO ANOTHER DIMENSION.”

My experience as a co-pilot has come to an end and we are somewhere above the Centovalli when Mauro contacts the tower and announces our landing. Whoever baptised this speck of earth Centovalli must have been drunk! It is only one valley but what a beautiful one! Sheer cliffs rise up from jungle-like greenery. Water flows everywhere. Mountains graze the sky. The Valle Maggia is just as green and spectacular. The famous clown Dimitri lives somewhere down there. Who knows if he is practising his juggling or enjoying a midday nap. “Look”, says Mauro, pointing to a gigantic 220-metre-high wall. It’s the dam wall from which James Bond leapt in Goldeneye. Today they leap from the Verzasca Dam with bungee jumping ropes. “Have you ever had a go, Mauro?” “No”, he replies, as he prepares for landing and brings the Piper Warrior safely to the ground after an hour’s flight.

A few hours later he’ll be in Aphrodite, perhaps entertaining the guests with Caruso. “Flying is like singing. It takes me to another dimension – high in the sky or deeply immersed in the aria”, he tells me before we say our goodbyes. Then he hops on his Kawasaki and speeds off. He has the same model as Tom Cruise in the film Top Gun.

... that Europe’s first minigolf course was built on the shores of Lago Maggiore? Swiss architect Paul Bongni took out a patent for the name “minigolf” in 1953. The idea for miniature golf courses originally dates back to the 1920s, when model structures and landscapes were first used as obstacles, for which there were no established standards at the time.

... that Ticino is the birthplace of star architect Mario Botta? The architect has made the region a mecca for architecture enthusiasts. His hallmarks include light slots, soft curves and glass roofs.

... that cigars are still rolled in Ticino? Before the First World War, the Fabbrica Tabacchi Brissago was the biggest factory in Ticino and the first ever stock company in Switzerland. Tobacco was delivered by ship and then stored, with each cigar being rolled by hand. Some 700 employees rolled up to 50 million cigars a year. The classic Brissago cigar is still produced in the factory, now called Centro Dannemann. On a guided tour (on Thursdays and Fridays) of this striking, light-flooded factory, you can sense the glory of the past, even though the building has long since been renovated.

Lengthen your swing at a stroke! Physiotherapist Cornelia Albrecht gets guests into the swing of things.

“Golf Perfekt” is the name of a programme being run in collaboration with renowned physiothera-pist Cornelia Albrecht. Following a 1.5-hour check-up, she accompanies guests onto the golf course to get a detailed picture of the rotation, stability and coordination of their bodies. She then provides advice for the players, along with individually tailored exercises. The aim is to resolve issues affecting performance – with her help, many golfers have managed to considerably increase their drive! A dipiù massage in the evening is the perfect end to the day.
