FADE IN:

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - DAY

A beat up station wagon makes its way through the deserted backwoods. The road is flanked in dense woods. The only sign of life is an OLD MAN walking along the side of the road.

CUT TO:

INT. STATION WAGON - DAY

DAN, the driver, is 19 and good looking. He’s has a good heart and a letter jacket for track.

He spots the Old Man and slows down to pull over.

DANHey guys, quiet down. I’m going to ask this old man for directions to the old abandoned cabin we’re driving to in my mom’s station wagon.

AMY, 18, rolls down her passenger window as the Old Man approaches their stopped car. She’s timid and a bit mousy, wearing her heart on her sweater sleeve.

The Old Man keeps walking past the car. Dan idles alongside him as he walks.

DAN(shouting)

Excuse me, sir?

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - CONTINUOUS

The Old Man turns, glaring into the car window. Dan leans over to the passenger side window.

OLD MANWhat do you want, city slicker?

DANWe were just wondering how to get to the old abandoned Miller place?

OLD MANWhat’s a city boy like you want to know for?

Page 3: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

INT. STATION WAGON - CONTINUOUS

JAMIE, 19, leans up into the front seat. She’s a bad girl foil to Amy, with lots of confidence and a leather jacket.

JAMIEHey, just tell us how to get there, old man.

CHAD, 19, her boyfriend, leans out the window too. He’s a cooler, cockier version of Dan, and probably does drugs.

CHADYeah, we just wanna get there already.

He turns to Jamie, smiling, coy and flirtatious.

CHADSo I can get there.

He and Jamie LAUGH over that one, making eyes at each other, and groping a bit.

AMYCome on guys!

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - CONTINUOUS

DANIt’s my Uncle’s place, sir. Can you please tell us how to get there?

The Old Man turns away from the car, pointing out into the woods.

OLD MANThere.

A small path appears in the woods at the end of which is a large, dilapidated cabin. LIGHTNING FLASHES and THUNDER BOOMS loudly, scarily.

DANGreat, thanks!

Dan turns the car down the extraordinarily ominous path, not a care in the world, since he’s a college boy city-slicker.

EXT. WOODS - DAY

The woods are dark and cramped. The mud smacks underneath the feet of MYRON and JIM, two hunters in day-glo hats and vests, as they walk along.

Myron makes his way through some growth, stepping over the many worms that have been brought to the surface by the rain.

MYRONBoy, that storm sure did bring up all the worms.

Jim stops to examine the large amount of worms. He grabs a stick and pokes them on the ground.

JIMYou know, we could gather ‘em up and sell ‘em if we just...

From behind them comes a SQUELCHING sound, like something massive sliding through the mud. Myron turns to look over his shoulder and reacts with a combination of shock and disgust.

MYRONHey look at this slug over here, it’s giant.

Jim turns around as well and looks off at it.

JIMStupid slug. I’m gonna poke it.

He steps forward with his stick, poking something ahead of him as he leaves Myron behind.

MYRONI don’t know, Jim. I wouldn’t get any closer.

JIM (O.S.)Ahh!

Myron looks shocked, horrified by what he’s seeing. He’s about to run in the other direction.

JIMDon’t leave me! It’s a Giant Killer Slug!

In a CLOSE UP, Jim SCREAMS in agony.

3.

Page 5: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Myron desperately tries to figure out what to do. Finally he grabs his gun and moves towards his friend and the mysterious Giant Killer Slug.

JIMI”m dying!

MYRONDon’t you die on me!

He steps forward just out of frame, gun raised. There’s a GUNSHOT. Then Myron screams.

MYRONThey’re killing me too!

Myron lets out one final agonized SCREAM, which scares off some birds in the imposing tree branches above. All that can be heard are the sounds of slimy, violent squishing.

CUT TO:

INT. DINER - DAY

It’s a typical small town diner, with a few blue collar CLIENTS. The ruggedly attractive sheriff, MERRITT sits at the counter eating breakfast. He looks exhausted as he drinks his cup of coffee.

His friend HENRY, a big jovial fellow with a mustache and overalls sits next to him.

HENRYNothing like a good cup of Joe to get your mind off of things.

MERRITTLike how I miss my ex-wife still?

HENRYThat’s not what I’m saying.

MERRITTI’m just trying to make it through today without too many problems, Henry.

Merritt’s POLICE RADIO crackles to life.

CHARLIE (O.S.)Hey Merritt. This is Charlie. I’m talking to you on your police radio.

4.

Page 6: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Sounds like your buddy Jasper got a little too drunk again last night.

Merritt sighs. He grabs the walkie talkie and speaks into it as he stands.

MERRITTRoger that Charlie. I’m on it.

(to Henry)See you here for lunch?

HENRYI don’t know where else I’d go. Only diner in town. Don’t forget about us little people yet.

Merritt throws some money down on the counter and tips his hat to the WAITRESS.

MERRITTI won’t.

He exits, leaving Henry by himself at the counter.

HENRY(to nobody at all)

I’m the janitor of the school.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - DAY

An old, dilapidated cabin sits in a small clearing, surrounded on all sides by the woods. As the station wagon pulls up, everyone inside is loud and excited about finally being there.

CHAD (O.S.)Pretty smart for a track star.“My uncle’s place.” You think faster than you run.

DAN (O.S.)I don’t know about that, Chad.

AMY (O.S.)(teasing)

It’s true.

They all LAUGH as the car pulls to a stop in front of the cabin.

5.

CHARLIE (O.S.) (CONT'D)

Page 7: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

INT. STATION WAGON - CONTINUOUS

Dan turns to the two girls.

DANWhy don’t you girls head in and check it out, and we’ll grab the bags?

JAMIEDon’t you love having a big strong boyfriend?

They get out of the car and race up into the cabin. Dan turns back to Chad.

DANI just wanted to say thanks for coming out here with me and Amy.

CHADDon’t mention it.

DANI just wanted to get away, what with the track meet --

CHAD No, I’m serious. Don’t mention that bullshit. We’re gonna get drunk and bone our girlfriends. It’s gonna be awesome.

Chad punches Dan on the shoulder and gets out of the car. Dan reaches to turn off the RADIO.

RADIO (O.S.)This is an important news bulletin for those listening. Meteorologists are saying we’ve got one heck of a storm coming. That’s everything from the radio for now. Maybe turn us on later for more news.

Dan turns the radio off and hops out of the car.

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - CONTINUOUS

Dan looks up at the sky, anxious. Dark storm clouds loom in the distance, coming closer. Chad shoves past him carrying a large suitcase.

EXT. JASPER’S CABIN - DAY

With his cop car parked nearby, Merritt helps a stumbling JASPER up the steps towards the cabin.

Jasper is an old crusty man with a long white beard, dressed like a miner. He sways drunkenly as Merritt steadies him.

MERRITTJasper, I’m not gonna miss carrying your drunk keister up these stairs.

Jasper raises a whiskey bottle, waving it around.

JASPERCome on Merritt! Just like old times. Like the mines.

MERRITTWhen are you gonna pull yourself together? They closed that salt mine fifteen years ago now.

Jasper turns on Merritt, with startling rage and intensity.

JASPERI told you, there’s still salt in those mines!

Merritt shakes his head and opens the door for Jasper.

MERRITTYeah, yeah. You just get inside there. I heard the edge of that hurricane’s s’posed to hit us.

Jasper stumbles inside his house, as Merritt studies the skyline.

CUT TO:

INT. JASPER’S CABIN - MOMENTS LATER

Jasper’s cabin is just as worn down as he is. The shades are drawn and the place is dark and dingy. Empty liquor bottles are strewn about in the general mess.

Jasper collapses onto a nearby couch as Merritt tries to open the shades.

MERRITTLet’s get a little light in here.

7.

Page 9: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Jasper GROANS, covering his eyes. Merritt studies the mess for a second, clears some junk off a nearby armchair and sits. He gives Jasper a sympathetic look.

MERRITTJasper, move on. I did.

JASPERAnd have my wife leave me for the Mayor? At least my wife died.

Merritt doesn’t respond.

JASPERI don’t know how to do nothing but mine, Merritt. You know that.

MERRITTThat’s not true. What about singing? You used to be a great singer capable of reaching very high notes with your voice.

JASPERBut that was years ago! I can’t do that stuff anymore. Don’t have the voice.

MERRITTThat’s probably all the drinking.

JASPERAnd what good’s my singing anyway? No money in singing.

Merritt stands, frustrated.

MERRITTWhat good’s your singing? What harm has your singing ever done?

Jasper begins to remember...

In a WAVY FLASHBACK....

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. MINE SHAFT

A sober, younger, Jasper is mining alongside TWO MINERS.

8.

Page 10: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MINER ONEJasper, being a miner in a mine is boring.

MINER TWOWhat could we ever do to pass the time?

MINER ONEHow about a song, Jasper?

MINER TWOYes a song! To while away the hours! This whole town loves singing!

Jasper starts SINGING a work song.

JASPEROH WHEN YOU WORK IN A MINE/YOU’VE GOT TO LEARN TO PASS THE TIME/AN EASY WAY TO DO IT IS WITH A LITTLE RHYME/AND A HIGH DIDDY DO AND A HIGH DIDDY DEE/COME ON BOYS, SING A WORK SONG WITH ME!

The other miners start to SING along.

MINER ONEHooray for songs!

MINER TWOHooray for Jasper!

They keep SINGING, louder. Jasper’s really going at it as they work.

A RUMBLE rocks the mine shaft as two giant, clearly prop, rocks, fall from above. They pin the miners, who SCREAM.

MINER ONECave in!

MINER TWOWe’re all going to die!

MINER ONE Jasper... your singing...

MINER TWOIt’s killing us...

9.

Page 11: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MINER ONEAt least we’ll die together...

Jasper can’t remember anymore...

The WAVY FLASHBACK ends...

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. JASPER’S CABIN - CONTINUOUS

Jasper looks haunted and takes a big swig from a bottle, which Merritt wrestles away from him.

MERRITTYou gotta let go of the past. And now I’m realizing I do too.

Merritt takes the bottle out with him, leaving Jasper trapped in his memories.

CUT TO:

EXT. JASPER’S CABIN - CONTINUOUS

As Merritt walks to his car, he narrowly misses stepping on a small SLUG. The slug creeps towards the cabin slowly as Merritt starts up the car.

As he pulls away, several more SLUGS crawl in from the woods.

CUT TO:

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - DAY

A black town car is parked with its hood up. The DRIVER leans over the engine, inspecting it. A smarmy-looking BUSINESS MAN in sunglasses gets out of the back seat.

DRIVERLooks like we’ll have to wait till someone drives by.

The Business Man takes off his sunglasses. He’s very handsome for such an asshole.

BUSINESS MANHow long is that?

DRIVERCould be a couple hours.

10.

Page 12: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

BUSINESS MANI’m an important business man. I don’t have a couple hours. I have a meeting with the mayor, for Christ’s sake.

DRIVERI’m sorry, sir but there’s not really anything I can...

The Business Man, exasperated, kicks a tire, hurting his foot.

BUSINESS MANI’ll walk.

DRIVERIf you want.

The Business Man starts off down the road.

BUSINESS MAN(to himself)

Hick.

The driver lights a cigarette and watches the Business Man hurry away.

DRIVER(to himself)

Prick.

The Business Man rounds a corner on the road and the Driver waves before turning back to the car.

DRIVERNow let’s see about fixing you up...

He gets down on the ground, crawling under the car, his legs sticking out.

DRIVER What the heck?

A SQUELCHING SOUND comes from under the car. The driver panics, his legs writhing.

DRIVEROh my --!

11.

Page 13: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

His voice is muffled as his legs keep fighting to escape. He goes limp abruptly.

CUT TO:

INT. BUSINESS CORP. LABS - DAY

The labs are sterile and all white, glistening and pristine. SLUGS of varying sizes live and squirm around in plexiglass containers on the counters.

DR. KATE ANDREWS, looks through a microscope. She’s cute, but also a scientist, who wears glasses and a lab coat. She looks up when she hears a VOICE.

VOICEKate... Kate... Feed me...

She turns to see a large SLUG is floating right by her head! She SHRIEKS, knocking the microscope to the ground with a CRASH.

KATEParker!

She turns around to see the slug is actually held in a large pair of tongs in the hands of PARKER, a red-haired man in a lab coat. He doesn’t get a lot of sun.

Parker LAUGHS.

PARKEROh, I got you! Just returning Slugworth here from the radiation chamber. You are so jumpy.

He puts the slug back into its plexiglass container. Dr. Andrews looks annoyed as she hands Parker a broom.

KATEI was going to get lunch from the diner. Do you want anything?

PARKERBacon lettuce tomato please.

She walks towards the glass doors.

PARKERHey! Have you seen slug specimens B and F, by any chance?

Dr. Andrews stops, anxious.

12.

Page 14: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWS They’re missing?

PARKERI’m sure one of the other scientists we work with has them.

Dr. Andrews gives him a look.

PARKERI’ll look into it.

She leaves.

EXT. BUSINESS CORP. LABS - DAY

Dr. Andrews walks out of the complex, a high tech building with a sign that reads “BusinessCorp: Business and Genetics since 1956” toward her car.

Parker runs out after her.

PARKERKate! Wait! Stop!

She turns around, anxious.

KATEWhat? The slugs?

PARKERTurkey club. I changed my mind.

He hands her a few dollars.

INT. DINER - DAY

Merritt sits at the counter, drinking coffee and joking with Henry.

HENRYAll those kids in their choir robes, puking up sloppy joes! I woulda cleaned it up any other day, but sloppy joe day?

He and Merritt share a laugh over this one.

MERRITTSo what’d they do?

13.

Page 15: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

HENRYHell if I know. Hope it was the conductor that had to mop it all up. Never lets me sing with the faculty choir.

Dr. Andrews enters. A few PEOPLE turn when she walks in.

HENRYWell, hey, doc! Whatcha doin’ here in town? I thought you were too busy with your secret projects out at the lab.

Dr. Andrews sits down on the stool next to Henry.

DR. ANDREWSYou know I can’t discuss the lab’s secret projects, Henry. They’re top secret.

She sees that Merritt is sitting at the counter as well.

DR. ANDREWSOh, Merritt. I mean, sheriff.

MERRITTSheriff Merritt’s fine.

DR. ANDREWS(tentatively)

Sheriff Merritt. Good to see you.

MERRITTWell, Doctor, things are... um...

Dr. Andrews smiles helpfully.

DR. ANDREWSQuiet?

HENRYBoring as spit’s more like it.

They all LAUGH, happily.

DR. ANDREWSWell I’ll see you later, I hope? Would you give this to the waitress? I’m kind of in a hurry.

She hands Merritt some money as she grabs a bagged lunch from the counter.

14.

Page 16: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTNot a problem.

DR. ANDREWSThank you.

She exits.

HENRYSheriff Merritt? How about that lady scientist?

MERRITTDoctor Andrews? What about her?

HENRYI think she’s got a crush on you.

MERRITTI don’t know, Henry. A scientist? Do they get crushes on anything other than science?

HENRYSeemed like flirting to me.

Henry finishes his coffee with a gulp as Merritt looks out after Dr. Andrews.

CUT TO:

EXT. THE WOODS - DAY

MAYOR BROWN, a fat, greasy man in a suit puffs along next to the Business Man, who takes off his glasses to better survey the woods nearby.

MAYOR BROWN(catching his breath)

We’d level these woods and have shuttle services right over to the amusement park. The one we’re talking about building.

BUSINESS MANYou’d be clearing thousands of trees.

MAYOR BROWNWho cares about trees?

He leans against the nearest one but its branch snaps and he falls.

15.

Page 17: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MAYOR BROWNThey aren’t even sturdy.

The Business Man gives him a curious look.

BUSINESS MANThe city council?

MAYOR BROWN(laughs)

I am the city council!

The Business Man mulls it over.

MAYOR BROWNThere’s not a decision made in this town that I’m not in charge of.

BUSINESS MANWell that was my only remaining concern, so... I think we have a deal.

They shake hands greedily.

MAYOR BROWNNow, how much is it worth to you to get my help making sure this happens?

BUSINESS MANI’ll have to speak with my associates, but...

MAYOR BROWNI’m asking for a bribe. Just to be clear.

BUSINESS MANYes, I understand.

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - DAY

The front door of the cabin opens and Dan, Amy, Chad, and Jamie walk out, LAUGHING.

DANCome on guys, let’s just gather that firewood.

JAMIEWho voted you team cahptain?

16.

Page 18: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Dan takes this really personally, but tries not to show that it’s a sore subject as he heads off into the woods.

AMYJamie!

Amy follows after Dan, looking worried. Jamie yells after her.

JAMIEWhat? We’re on vacation!

EXT. THE WOODS - CONTINUOUS

The Business Man turns to the Mayor as they watch Dan and the city kids approach.

BUSINESS MANI thought you said this was all abandoned.

MAYOR BROWNIt is.

He approaches Dan.

BUSINESS MANBecause if we’re going to have trouble with permits we’ll just --

MAYOR BROWN(over his shoulder)

No trouble.

Mayor Brown brushes through some trees to where Dan and his friends are.

MAYOR BROWNWhat are you doing here?

CHADWe could ask you the same thing mister man!

DANIt’s alright, Chad. No need for name calling.

MAYOR BROWNYou city kids are pretty far from home. Round these parts we speak to our elders with respect.

17.

Page 19: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANI’ll have to remember that.

MAYOR BROWNY’all better get on out of here.

JAMIE(to Chad)

We just got here.

CHADAnd we didn’t even get there.

MAYOR BROWNYou’re not welcome here city kids. So why don’t you just go on back to your liberal college with your hippy professors and watch a play or something?

DANNo, I don’t think we’ll do that.

CHADPlays are for queers.

MAYOR BROWNWe’ll see. We’ll see about that city boy.

He turns back to the Business Man and signals for him to follow as Mayor Brown walks angrily down the path.

CHADWhat a dick.

(doing thick accent)“Round here we speak with respect.” I’m a bad ass! I don’t respect anything!

CUT TO:

INT. JASPER’S CABIN - DAY

Jasper wakes with a start, grabbing for a bottle. He pours the last few drops into his mouth desperately, then slams the empty bottle back down.

He sits up abruptly.

18.

Page 20: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JASPERI have to go into the woods.

CUT TO:

EXT. THE WOODS - DAY

Jasper stumbles around the woods.

JASPERI left a bottle of hooch out here in the woods. I left it by a tree.

He looks at the trees, but all trees look the same.

JASPERAll these trees look the same!

He walks a bit further until he abruptly stops, spotting something horrible. He shoves his way through some bushes to see: two skeletons in hunting clothes. He hears a SQUISHING sound and sees slime on the skeletons.

JASPERThey were killed by slugs!

Terrified, and shocked sober, he runs back towards his cabin.

CUT TO:

EXT. THE WOODS - DAY

The college kids are all out in the woods, gathering firewood. Jamie shakes some mud off of her hand.

JAMIEUgh. I hate the woods! Too many creepy-crawlies...

AMYOh, come on Jamie!. Just a little bit more. Dan’s right. This is a lot faster.

DANAnd I know about fast!

They all LAUGH and LAUGH and LAUGH. It’s not that good of a joke, really.

CHADHey guys, check this out!

19.

Page 21: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He points out a small slug hidden under some leaves and branches.

CHADA slug!

AMYEww!

JAMIEOh my god! Keep it away from me!

DANNow, Jamie. We have nothing to fear from slugs if we just leave them alone. They would never hurt you unprovoked.

He and Amy start to head off to gather more firewood.

CHADOh come on. It’s not like they bite.

He reaches down to pick it up.

JAMIEOh no, don’t touch it!

He touches it, and recoils in pain, YELLING.

JAMIE(exactly as before)

Oh no, don’t touch it!

Chad stops and bursts into LAUGHTER.

CHADHa Ha! I totally freaked you out Jamie!

JAMIEThat’s not funny!

DAN (O.S.)Come on guys! Quit messing around, and hurry it up.

They follow after Dan & Amy. The slug slimes off slowly in the other direction.

CUT TO:

Page 22: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

INT. POLICE STATION - OFFICE - DAY

Merritt sits alone in his cramped office, drinking coffee as he places things into a cardboard box on his desk, steps away from the holding cell also in the station.

Mayor Brown comes in, and Merritt jumps to his feet, spilling coffee as he does.

MAYOR BROWNOh, no, don’t get up.

He sits on the edge of the desk, trying to look casual, but seeming more uncomfortable than anything else.

He looks down to see a box of donuts.

MAYOR BROWNDonuts? Don’t mind if I do.

He takes one and noisily chews it.

MAYOR BROWNNow Merritt...

MERRITTTake your time. Wouldn’t want you to choke.

MAYOR BROWNI’ve got a quick little job I want you to take care of.

MERRITTI hope it is quick. It’s my last day, Mayor.

MAYOR BROWNAnd we’ll be very sad to lose you. All of us.

MERRITTOh, I’m sure some people won’t mind it too much.

He places a framed photograph into the box: Merritt and his WIFE.

MAYOR BROWNI’ve got those investors here from the big city and I need you to go out to the old --

Jasper stumbles in, white as a ghost.

21.

Page 23: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JASPERMerritt!

Merritt stands up, again spilling coffee.

MERRITTDamn it, Jasper!

Mayor Brown stands as well, displeased.

JASPERMerritt! Giant Killer Slugs! It was terrible!

MERRITTSorry about this Mayor Brown.

(to Jasper)What are you talking about slugs?

JASPERSlugs! I saw them! Dead hunters! Killed ‘em! Just bones left.

MAYOR BROWNYour friend’s drunk. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Merritt eyes Mayor Brown as Jasper grabs the Mayor by the lapels of his suit.

JASPERI’m telling you there was slugs!

The Mayor looks disgusted, terrified.

MAYOR BROWNGet him off of me!

Merritt grabs Jasper, leading him off.

MAYOR BROWNLousy drunk.

INT. POLICE STATION - HOLDING CELL - DAY

Merritt helps Jasper into the small town holding cell.

MERRITTWhy don’t you sleep it off? I am sure there is no danger of slugs attacking and killing people. That would be ridiculous.

22.

Page 24: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He laughs again at the thought of it.

JASPERBut... but...

MERRITTJust take it easy there Jasper. You’ll see.

He leaves Jasper alone in the cell and locks it up.

INT. POLICE STATION - OFFICE - DAY

Merritt returns, shaking his head. He sees the Mayor, still upset, readjusting his hairpiece and suit.

MERRITTI’m sorry, Mayor Brown, what was it you wanted?

MAYOR BROWNNothing. Nothing at all. I’ve got some important calls to make. Thank you for all your hard work.

The Mayor hurries out of the station, leaving Merritt to smile to himself as he sits at his desk.

MERRITT(chuckles)

Giant killer slugs...

CUT TO:

EXT. CREEK - DAY

Chad and Jamie come to a little creek running through the woods. Downstream, and across the bank, TWO FISHERMEN sit in fold out plastic chairs.

CHADI don’t remember there being a river.

Jamie stops to look at the water.

JAMIEOh, it’s a creek. How nice. It’s so romantic, Chad.

Chad chucks a rock into the creek.

23.

Page 25: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

CHADYeah...I’m bored. You wanna smoke a reefer?

He digs his hand into his pocket. Jamie smiles.

JAMIEYeah. I love smoking reefers.

CHAD(digging in his pocket)

All teenagers do.

Chad suddenly stops, his face falling.

CHADOh no. I left my reefers in the car! I’ll go back and get them. You stay by the stream, Jamie.

Chad heads off into the woods, leaving Jamie behind. She sits down on a fallen log and looks out across the creek at the fishermen, who have bent down examining their catch.

CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS - DAY

A giant slug squirms along a footpath in the woods.

The sound of RUSTLING and someone walking quickly through the woods can be heard, and the slug squelches to a halt, lying in wait.

Chad comes out of the woods, mumbling to himself.

CHADI can’t believe I left the doobies in the --

He notices the slug on the ground, as it reaches upwards to try to grab him.

Chad gives a little jump over it.

CHADOutta my way, ya big slug!

Chad keeps walking off, very pleased with himself as the slug turns to watch.

24.

Page 26: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

CHADStupid slugs! Not as smart as humans, that’s for sure.

The slug squelches off in the direction he came from.

CUT TO:

INT. MAYOR BROWN’S OFFICE - WAITING ROOM - DAY

CANDY, a young, seemingly mousy secretary, enters in a hurry, looking frazzled. The PHONE RINGS as she makes herself up. She musses her hair, and does her lipstick.

MAYOR BROWN enters, looking frustrated.

MAYOR BROWNCandy! Where the hell have you been? Look at you!

CANDYThe optometrist.

She puts her hand up to the frame of her glasses.

MAYOR BROWNTake those off, you look like a librarian or a scientist.

Candy, embarrassed takes them off and puts them away. She continues primping for the Mayor.

MAYOR BROWNGet me the BusinessCorp labs on the phone. And do something about...

He gestures towards her entire physique dismissively.

CANDYWhat do you want to talk to the secret government lab for?

She yanks her top down to show some more cleavage. The Mayor looks at her now, pleased. She looks like a sexpot.

MAYOR BROWNThat’s better. I just want to check on something...

The PHONE RINGS.

EXT. BUSINESS CORP. - DAY

Dr. Andrews parks and walks into the main entrance, holding her takeout order.

CUT TO:

INT. BUSINESS CORP. - CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS

As Dr. Andrews walks through the halls, her footsteps echo. Everything is silent and empty. It is creepy. A PHONE RINGS in the distance.

DR. ANDREWSHello?... He --

She slips a little. Looking down at her shoe, she sees that she’s stepped in slime.

DR. ANDREWS(worried)

Parker? Parker!

She begins to run down the hall.

CUT TO:

INT. BUSINESS CORP. - LABS - CONTINUOUS

Dr. Andrews bursts into the lab, shaking slime off her hand. The room is completely destroyed, with lab equipment broken all over the place.

Slime covers everything, dripping from things. It’s gross. There are some DEAD SCIENTISTS scattered about.

DR. ANDREWSParker!

She hears a NOISE and a GROAN somewhere in the lab.

She rushes toward the sound.

DR. ANDREWSParker!

Behind an overturned lab table and some expensive looking lab things, Parker lies, slimed, on the ground. He is very badly hurt, dying.

26.

Page 28: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

PARKER(quietly)

Kate!

DR. ANDREWSParker! What happened?

PARKER(coughing)

It was horrible... The Super Slugs...

He GROANS in pain, closing his eyes. Knowing he’s dead, Dr. Andrews takes a moment and then stands.

PARKER(suddenly)

...you’ve got to stop them...

DR. ANDREWSWhat? They escaped?

PARKERThey attacked... Everyone... Dead...

He GROANS in pain, closing his eyes. Knowing he’s actually dead now, Dr. Andrews takes a moment and then stands.

PARKER(suddenly)

Only now do I realize how foolish it is to artificially increase the intelligence of such dangerous animals...

He GROANS in pain, closing his eyes.

DR. ANDREWSNo! Parker!

There is a CRASH behind her. She searches for a weapon desperately and grabs the only thing nearby: a scalpel.

From behind a nearby computer, a SLUG’S ANTENNAE peek out. They are too long to belong to an ordinary slug. This is a SUPER SLUG. The antennae gyrate slowly in her direction.

The Mayor hangs up the phone looking worried. He isn’t sure what to do. His office is plush and well decorated, though tacky.

Candy enters holding a fax.

CANDYThe business man from the city faxed this over. Looks like a budget for the amusement park project.

He snatches it out of her hand, and looks at it. His eyes going wide.

CANDYIs it a lot?

MAYOR BROWNEnough to risk the lives of countless individuals.

(to himself)Besides, they might just be out to lunch.

CANDYI don’t know what you’re talking about.

MAYOR BROWN(still to himself)

Let’s hope they can contain them.

CANDYMayor Brown?

He looks up.

MAYOR BROWNOh, just my dogs. Just worried about ‘em. They’re sick.

CANDYWill there be anything else?

MAYOR BROWNNo. No Candy, thank you.

She begins to exit.

MAYOR BROWNGod save our souls.

28.

Page 30: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

CANDY(over her shoulder)

I’m sure God will look out for your dogs.

CUT TO:

EXT. CREEK - DAY

As the two fishermen pack up their things, one stops and looks at the other.

FISHERMAN ONEWhere the hell’d you put my catfish?

FISHERMAN TWOI didn’t touch your stinking catfish. How come you always accuse me of things?

FISHERMAN ONEAin’t nobody else to accuse.

FISHERMAN TWOHow about yourself? I can’t be responsible for everything you do.

Two GYRATING ANTENNAE poke up from behind Fisherman One’s chair.

FISHERMAN ONEOh, here it is. Guess I did hide it.

There’s a SQUECLH and Fisherman Two looks over to see that the head of a GIANT KILLER SLUG peeks out from behind their chairs. It leans in closer to Fisherman One’s neck.

FISHERMAN TWOI don’t think that’s a catfish.

FISHERMAN ONEWhat are you talking about? Course it’s --

The Slug moves in, quickly, grabbing him by the jugular.

FISHERMAN ONEKilling me...

He dies. The Slug’s head begins to retreat. Fisherman Two is distraught, sobbing.

29.

Page 31: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He jumps to his feet, seeing the whole slug’s massive quivering body as it slimes away. He hits it with his fishing rod.

FISHERMAN TWOTake me too! Don’t leave me alone you son of a bitch!

CUT TO:

EXT. CREEK - CONTINUOUS

Jamie sits resting on the fallen log when Fisherman Two’s SCREAM pierces the air.

She looks over just in time to see the slug climbing onto the flailing body of Fisherman Two. The slug on top of his chest makes terrible squelching noises as his YELLS fade to GROANS.

Horrified, Jamie tears back off into the woods.

JAMIESlug!

CUT TO:

EXT. THE WOODS - DAY

Jamie runs through the woods, terrified. Tree branches slap her across the face and hands, scratching her, and tearing at her clothes and hair.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - DAY

Jamie bursts through the last of the trees into the clearing, spotting Chad smoking reefers on the cabin porch.

JAMIEOh my god! Chad! There was a giant slug and it killed two fishermen!

CHADCome on Jamie! You gotta be kidding me. A giant slug?

Jamie’s furious, scared, trying to explain.

30.

Page 32: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JAMIEIt looked like a giant slug! I don’t know what it was. We’ve got to tell everybody.

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - LIVING ROOM - DAY

Jamie talks to Dan and Amy.

DANWhat’s going on Jamie?

AMYWhat happened?

CHADJamie thinks she saw a giant slug attack and brutally kill two fishermen. I mean if that isn’t classic Jamie, I don’t know what is.

A worried Amy tries to comfort the distraught Jamie.

AMYOh, come on Jamie.

Jamie starts crying.

AMYJamie. I’m sure there’s no giant slugs attacking people out there.

JAMIEThere was, Amy! We’ve got to get out of here! We’ve got to get into town and warn them!

Dan looks around the woods.

DANYou know what, Jamie? I saw an old radio in the basement earlier Jamie. Why don’t we just call on that, Jamie?

Jamie nods, and Amy leads her off into the bedrom.

AMYLet’s get you cleaned up Jamie.

31.

Page 33: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DAN(to Chad)

And if there really are two dead guys out there...well, the police should know.

Dan heads off.

CHADJamie!

CUT TO:

EXT. MAIN STREET - DAY

CHARLIE, a black man, stands by a van with an airbrushed sign on it reading “COUNTY MORGUE.” He’s wearing hospital scrubs and eating a hamburger. He’s too old for this shit.

CHARLIEBoy. My shift is almost over. Which is good, because then I won’t have to do any more work today, and I am very tired from all the work I’ve been doing already today at the county morgue. It’s hard to be black and work in a small town sometimes.

The RADIO in the car comes alive.

RADIO (O.S.)This is the radio. We’ve got two dead fishermen at the creek over by the old abandoned Miller Place.

CHARLIEOh man. I guess my day isn’t over yet after all.

He SIGHS, opening the car door and picking up the radio.

CHARLIE(into radio)

I’m on it.

He chucks the rest of the hamburger down on the ground and hops into the car.

INT. VAN - CONTINUOUS

Charlie sits down as he picks up the radio again.

32.

Page 34: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

CHARLIESheriff Merritt? Buddy? Did you hear the radio? I’ll see you there.

He puts a siren on top of the car and drives off.

EXT. MAIN STREET - MOMENTS LATER

The hamburger remains alone on the ground in the center of the road as a slug approaches.

CUT TO:

EXT. CREEK - DAY

Charlie kneels over two large white blankets covering the fishermen’s corpses. He looks behind him and stands as Mayor Brown approaches from his car.

CHARLIEMister Mayor.

MAYOR BROWNWell, if it ain’t Charlie. What’s it look like?

CHARLIEI wouldn’t know sir. Just a couple of dead bodies, you can tell by the white sheets. I leave the medical work to the experts.

Jamie and her friends approach through the woods. Merritt follows with a notepad.

JAMIEIt was right over here!

MAYOR BROWN(to Merritt)

What’s going on here? Are these city kids making trouble?

Merritt reads back some of his notes.

MERRITTWe got two John Does. Looks like they were fishing out here when something got them.

He points to Jamie.

33.

Page 35: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTShe says she saw it.

MAYOR BROWNSaw it, or did it?

MERRITTMayor Brown! What did you see Jamie?

Merritt holds his pencil ready.

JAMIEIt was... It looked like a big... slug.

MERRITTAre you joking around?

MAYOR BROWNThis is no time to joke around, young lady. You’re interfering with a police investigation. Do you understand the seriousness of --

Dan interrupts him, angrily.

DANThat’s what she said she saw, alright?

Mayor Brown grabs Merritt and takes him a few steps away from the teenagers.

MAYOR BROWNMerritt you probably don’t want to deal with this. Why don’t you just lock them up for your replacement to take care of?

Merritt looks over his shoulder at the teenagers.

MAYOR BROWNMaybe by then they’ll have learned their lesson.

MERRITTJamie must not have seen it very well, that’s all. I’ve got this covered.

The Mayor gives him a look.

34.

Page 36: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MAYOR BROWNI’m giving you a look. Because I’m not happy.

MERRITTJust let me do my job. Go be the mayor.

The Mayor reluctantly heads back towards his car. Merritt pointedly waits until he’s gone to head back over to the teenagers.

CHADWhat a jerk!

Merritt tries not to smile.

MERRITTYeah... I don’t know if you picked it up, but, he fucked my wife once too. Listen, are you serious? Was it really a giant slug Jamie?

Jamie nods.

MERRITTYou kids get back in that cabin.

They start to move.

MERRITTDon’t go anywhere till I tell you.

They stop.

MERRITTGo on.

They leave. Merritt turns over to Charlie and the dead bodies. Dan stops and turns to ask from afar.

DANHey! Do you think it’s true?

Merritt turns around, dramatically. He’s tense, but trying not to show it too much. Dan looks to him expectantly. Merritt finally decides to say what he’s thinking.

MERRITTI don’t know...

Dan nods and leaves, understanding the gravity of that dramatic conclusion.

35.

Page 37: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

EXT. CREEK - LATER

Merritt gets low to the ground and pulls up the corner of one of the blankets. Underneath, is just a slimy skeleton dressed as a fisherman.

CHARLIEWhat’d they say, Merritt?

MERRITTWhat do you know about slugs, Charlie?

Merritt turns to examine the skeleton as Charlie thinks for a moment.

CHARLIEI couldn’t pay for college, Merritt. Not after I lost my scholarship. I remember it like it was yesterday.

He starts to remember...

In a WAVY FLASHBACK...

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. AUDITORIUM - BACKSTAGE - DAY

Charlie stands backstage in a choral robe looking anxious.

CHARLIE (V.O.)It was the big singing championship against Harvard, and I made it to the final rounds...

A STAGEHAND signals for Charlie to head on stage.

CUT TO:

INT. AUDITORIUM - ON STAGE - CONTINUOUS

Charlie walks to center stage, putting on a confident face. He stands under a banner reading “Big Singing Championship Against Harvard.” He starts singing.

CHARLIE (V.O.)... But I didn’t stretch my singing muscles properly.

36.

Page 38: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

I was young, and cocky, and didn’t think I needed to. But I did. And I hurt them. I hurt them real bad Merritt.

Charlie’s voice seems to be croaking, creaking, it isn’t coming out. He grabs at his throat in terror, fear, and shame. He can’t keep singing, and is BOOED and JEERED off the stage.

CUT TO:

INT. DORM ROOM - NIGHT

Charlie packs his belongings sadly into a box.

CHARLIE (V.O.)After I lost my scholarship...

He opens his desk drawer and looks down inside.

CUT TO:

INT. MORGUE - DAY

Charlie opens one of the morgue’s drawers to look at a CORPSE.

CHARLIE (V.O.)...I had to settle at the morgue because I couldn’t afford my dream of becoming a big shot doctor and moving to the city.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. CREEK - DAY

Charlie stands behind Merritt, who is still looking at the dead bodies.

CHARLIEBut I did take one class and we talked about slugs a little... the only thing I remember about them is...

A WAVY FLASHBACK begins...

INT. CLASSROOM - DAY

Charlie sits in a classroom. Nothing happens.

CHARLIE (V.O.)Gosh, Merritt, I can’t think of it.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. CREEK - DAY

Charlie shakes his head, embarrassed. Merritt stands and pats him on the back to be supportive.

CHARLIEI’m such a failure.

MERRITTDon’t worry about it Charlie. You aren’t a failure. What you’re doing’s important.

CHARLIEI guess you’re right.

MERRITTNow toss these dead bodies into garbage bags and haul them over to the morgue.

Charlie starts trying to shove the dead bodies into garbage bags. He stops as Merritt begins to walk away.

CHARLIEHey Merritt! What are you thinking?

MERRITTYou got a gun at home Charlie?

CHARLIEShoot. That bad?

Merritt gets to the edge of his cruiser and stops. He turns and looks at Charlie for a dramatic moment and CLOSE UP. This should be even more dramatic than his moment with Dan.

MERRITT(finally)

I don’t know.

38.

Page 40: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He gets in and slams the door, gunning the engine and leaving Charlie confused and afraid.

CUT TO:

INT. POLICE CRUISER - DUSK

Merritt drives along the streets of his town, which are very clearly just rear projection around the car windows. He talks to himself as he turns.

MERRITTShift’s over in twenty five minutes. Just ride it out, keep your head low. Then it’s off to Denver, a place for people to start over.

CUT TO:

INT. MAYOR BROWN’S OFFICE - DUSK

Mayor Brown sits at his desk, with Candy sitting on his lap. He smokes a cigar and plays with a large model of an amusement park on his desk.

MAYOR BROWNAnd the mine’s already loaded with explosives...

CANDYOh, Mayor Brown...

MAYOR BROWN... so we can hole that up and start building as soon as we get the money.

CANDYI love it when you explain important things to me.

MAYOR BROWNI love being important.

Doctor Andrews enters in a frenzy, looking disheveled.

DR. ANDREWSMr. Mayor, you’ve got to do something!

39.

Page 41: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MAYOR BROWNDoctor Andrews! Shouldn’t you be out at the labs working on... whatever it is you work on?

He LAUGHS as he extricates himself from Candy and stand to greet the doctor.

DR. ANDREWSThis is deadly serious.

CANDYOh no, are you his veterinarian?

Dr. Andrews is confused. Mayor Brown turns to Candy, who looks genuinely concerned.

MAYOR BROWNWhy don’t you excuse us for a moment Candy?

She exits.

MAYOR BROWNI don’t appreciate you coming here Andrews.

DR. ANDREWSThe BusinessCorp lab has been breached. Right now you have four giant, mutant slugs on the edge of town.

Mayor Brown turns to look out the window at the Main Street.

MAYOR BROWNHow dangerous can slugs be? They don’t even have bones. I have a lot of reasons not to do anything about this.

DR. ANDREWSThese slugs killed everyone I work with! They’re a threat to everyone who lives in this town.

MAYOR BROWNDid I mention I have investors here? That’s another reason not to do anything.

Mayor Brown begins to pack up a briefcase, haphazardly putting papers and forms into it.

40.

Page 42: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSCan you at least get Sheriff Merritt to do something?

Mayor Brown checks his watch.

MAYOR BROWNToo late I’m afraid. He’s retiring today. We’re having a surprise party for him, you should stop by.

He begins to head out the door.

DR. ANDREWSWhy won’t you listen to reason?

He turns back to her at the door.

MAYOR BROWNI don’t have to listen to reason. I’m the mayor of a small town.

He exits, leaving Andrews to stare out the window at the town, now completely in jeopardy.

FADE TO:

INT. POLICE STATION - DUSK

Merritt sits at his desk, packing up a box of his belongings. He stares up at the walls, seeing a framed commendation for bravery in the line of duty.

He grabs it and tosses it into the box. He pulls a postcard out of his pocket and gently places it on top of the framed commendation.

It shows an idyllic sunset photograph of Denver and reads “Denver: A place for people to start over.” Merritt SIGHS.

Dr. Andrews rushes in, panting and out of breath.

DR. ANDREWSMerritt!

She runs straight into his arms.

MERRITTKate!

They are both a bit surprised, and separate.

41.

Page 43: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTI mean... Dr. Andrews, what is it?

DR. ANDREWSIt’s terrible! The lab! The slugs! We’ve got to warn everyone!

MERRITTWhat? Did you say slugs?

DR. ANDREWSYes! Killer slugs are on the loose!

He almost runs off right then, but stops himself quickly from doing something rash.

MERRITTYour lab works on slugs? You’re joking around. Henry must have put you up to it.

DR. ANDREWSWho would put me up to this?

MERRITTHenry, he’s the janitor of the school.

He holds up a PHOTO of himself and Henry, standing in front of the school. Merritt holds his gun and Henry holds his mop proudly.

DR. ANDREWSNo it’s not a joke. There are slugs, giant killer slugs, loose and attacking the town.

MERRITTYou’re going to have to file a police report Dr. Andrews. During normal business hours. Station’s closed I’m afraid.

He begins to usher her out of his office.

DR. ANDREWSBut, but, Sheriff Merritt --

MERRITTNot anymore. Now I’m just Merritt, the man.

He takes his badge off, setting it on the desk.

42.

Page 44: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSYour whole town is in danger.

MERRITTIt isn’t my town.

He pushes her out, and sits again. She’s confused and disappointed in him, but so is he.

MERRITTI don’t know if it ever was my town.

He thinks for a moment, fiddling with the Denver postcard.

CUT TO:

INT. POLICE STATION - HOLDING CELL - DUSK

Merritt enters the holding cell where Jasper is sleeping. He leans over and shakes him awake.

MERRITTJasper? Jasper, get up!

Jasper struggles awake.

MERRITTWhere’d you see those slugs?

JASPEROut between my place and the old abandoned Miller place.

Merritt turns to look out the barred window.

MERRITTDamn it. She was right. How come they’re always right?

JASPERI have no idea what you’re talking about.

Merritt heads out the door leaving the cell wide open.

CUT TO:

EXT. POLICE STATION - DUSK

Merritt exits the police station to the parking lot, where Dr. Andrews is sitting on the curb in the rain, near tears.

43.

Page 45: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTKate! Dr. Andrews!

She turns around.

DR. ANDREWSWhat? Are you trying to tease me again about this?

Merritt sits beside her.

MERRITTNo. I believe you. I don’t want to at all, but I do. So... Kate, I --

Jasper exits the police station.

JASPERMerritt you left the cell unlocked. Am I free to go, or --?

MERRITTJasper, you’re sure you didn’t see those guys over at the creek?

JASPERThe guys I saw were in the middle of the woods. I know what woods look like.

Jasper begins to remember...

JASPERI’m having another flashback.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. THE WOODS - DAY

Jasper looks around at all the trees surrounding him.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. POLICE STATION - DUSK

Merritt turns back to Dr. Andrews, putting his hand on her shoulder.

MERRITTWe’ve got two John Does at the morgue right now.

Page 46: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Could you tell me if they were killed by these slugs or not?

LIGHTNING FLASHES overheard, and THUNDER BOOMS shortly after. Merritt and Andrews share a worried look. She’s beautiful, but scared.

DR. ANDREWSI’ll do my best Merritt.

They hop into his police cruiser. He flips a switch and the SIRENS roar to life as he guns the engine down the road.

FADE TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - BEDROOM - NIGHT

Chad and Jamie are getting pretty hot and heavy on the bed. Her shirt’s off and he’s trying to take off her pants when she stops him.

JAMIEI don’t know Chad. Maybe we should just...

Chad GROANS. He’s not happy, even angry.

CHAD(even angry)

Maybe we just what, Jamie?

JAMIEI don’t know. I just saw two guys brutally murdered by a slug over by the creek.

Chad pushes back even further, very disgruntled.

CHADThere’s no such thing as giant killer slugs! When are you going to learn that Jamie?

JAMIEMaybe we should just take it slow for tonight.

Chad rolls out of the bed, pacing nearby, upset.

CHADI don’t take it slow, Jamie! I’m a bad ass rebel! You know that Jamie!

45.

MERRITT (CONT'D)

Page 47: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JAMIEI know that, but --

CHADUgh! I’m gonna go get some alcohol out of the car!

He heads over to the door, opens it. He stops on the threshold.

CHADAnd drink it!

He slams the door behind him. Jamie sits on the bed, looking worried, and disappointed.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The rain pounds outside as Dan & Amy snuggle on the couch.

Chad bursts in, which startles Amy, who SHRIEKS.

CHADHey lovebirds, you got the keys to the car? I’m gonna get drunk.

Dan, shaking his head, gets the key and tosses it to Chad. Chad opens the door and stands there, looking at the pouring rain.

CHADMan, it’s really coming down!

AMYShut the door, Chad!

Chad turns, smiling, the ominous rain pouring down behind him.

CHAD(teasing)

What’s the matter, Amy, afwaid of a wittle wain?

He heads out, slamming the door behind him. Amy buries her head in Dan’s shoulder.

AMYGod! Sometimes he can be so...

46.

Page 48: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANI know, I know.

She looks up into Dan’s eyes.

AMYHe was joking, but...

(whispering)I don’t like this rain, Dan. It gives me a bad feeling... something evil about it...

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Chad walks through the pouring rain towards the parked car. He makes slow going, hopping gingerly with his bare feet.

CHADYuck. It’s muddy and rainy.

He hears a SQUISH and stops, looking at his foot.

CHADMy foot’s covered in slime!

It is. From behind the steps of the cabin, a Giant Killer Slug sticks its head out, reaching up to Chad.

CHADOh god!

He jumps back, trying to kick the slug, but it grabs his ankle, bringing him down.

Chad stares transfixed as the slug turns its front end around and makes some SQUISHY NOISES.

From the woods come three other giant slugs slime their way to Chad.

CHADSLUGS!

He struggles back to his feet as the slugs close in on him. He gets up to the stairs, the slugs right behind him.

He slips on the wet wood, falling backwards onto the mass of slugs! SQUISHING NOISES are drowned out by his SCREAMS.

47.

Page 49: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

CHADAAAAAH!!!!

CUT TO:

INT. MORGUE - NIGHT

The two skeletons now lay on slabs in the county morgue. Dr. Andrews looks very scientistly, studying them as Charlie mirrors her actions as he looks on intently. Merritt and Jasper watch.

DR. ANDREWSIt was definitely the super slugs. Look at the viscosity of this slime.

She demonstrates that the slime is very slimy.

CHARLIEBodies don’t get that slimy for weeks. She’s right.

DR. ANDREWSI hope there’s nobody else outside of town who’d be at risk. Because that would be extremely dangerous.

JASPERMerritt, what about those city kids out at the Miller place?

Merritt turns from the corpses, shocked.

MERRITTOh my... We’ve gotta get out there and get those kids!

THUNDER roars outside. They all look out the window at the rain now coming down hard, the wind kicking it up almost sideways.

Merritt grabs a nearby radio and starts fiddling with it.

MERRITT(gravely)

This is no normal storm.

He turns on the radio.

48.

Page 50: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

RADIOWelcome to the radio. We have another special bulletin for you: This is no normal storm.

MERRITTI knew it!

RADIOThe wind sounds like that for a reason. That’s right, it’s a hurricane, folks. Do not go outside.

CHARLIE(to Merritt)

But what about--?

RADIONo matter what.

They all share a concerned look over this dramatic news.

RADIOThat’s pretty much everything from the radio for now. Turn us -- Oh, a tree!

The Radio cuts out, leaving only static.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Just as Dan and Amy are about to kiss, a SCREAM echoes through the room, startling Amy.

AMYWhat was that?

They both pause to look around. A muffled SCREAM is faint in the background.

DANOh, that’s just the wind.

AMYDan, it sounds like screaming!

49.

Page 51: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANWind sounds like that sometimes. In hurricanes.

CUT TO:

EXT. CABIN - CONTINUOUS

The slugs writhe around Chad as he struggles desperately. He tries to peel them off of him, but can’t stop them.

Finally, a slug crawls up his chest and towards his face. He SCREAMS as it covers his mouth.

CUT TO:

INT. MORGUE - NIGHT

Merritt fiddles with the radio as Dr. Andrews looks out the window at the storm.

MERRITT(into radio)

Hello? Hello?

The radio comes back with only STATIC.

DR. ANDREWSWe can’t just leave those kids out there. What are they going to do?

MERRITT(gravely)

They’ll have to take care of themselves.

DR. ANDREWSBut Merritt --!

Merritt stands, approaching Dr. Andrews angrily.

MERRITTI can only take care of so many people, Kate. I’m a sheriff, not a super hero. Just tell me, what exactly are we up against?

Dr. Andrews looks up at him, ashamed. She squirms under the pressure of Merritt’s stare and finally speaks.

50.

Page 52: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSWe needed smarter slugs... for our science. But to make them smarter, we had to give them bigger brains, so we made the slugs bigger. They got smarter because of it, but they also became more aggressive.

MERRITTBut slugs are slow! We’ll just outrun ‘em.

DR. ANDREWSI hope so.... Unless...

MERRITT(laughs uncomfortably)

Unless what? They learned how to go faster?

CUT TO:

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - NIGHT

The Old Man from before walks along the desolate country road, GRUMBLING to himself in the dark and rain.

He hears some SQUISHING noises in the woods alongside the road. He stops, looks for the source of the noise, but doesn’t see anything.

OLD MANDamn kids, always hiding in bushes.

He walks another few steps before hearing even louder SQUISHING.

He looks behind him again and sees a Giant Killer Slug sitting in the middle of the road.

OLD MANWhat the...?

The Super Slug charges towards him, super fast, squishing through the mud.

The Old Man turns, trying to run. The slug follows along and they slip and slide through the mud.

51.

Page 53: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

OLD MAN(screaming)

Help! HELP!

CUT TO:

INT. MORGUE - CONTINUOUS

Merritt, Dr. Andrews, and Jasper all stop suddenly as they hear SCREAMS outside.

DR. ANDREWSThat sounds like screaming!

JASPERIt’s probably just the hurricane wind.

MERRITTI don’t think so.

He grabs his gun and heads out the door.

CUT TO:

EXT. MORGUE - CONTINUOUS

Merritt barges out into the rain, and spots the Old Man lying in the road in the distance.

He runs over, followed by Dr. Andrews, and Charlie.

The Old Man is covered in slime from head to foot and very badly injured.

DR. ANDREWSWhat happened?

OLD MAN(in agony)

Slug.... attacked me....

Merritt turns to Charlie.

MERRITTHelp me get him inside.

Charlie bends down to try and help move him along.

The Old Man grabs him desperately, trying to tell him something.

52.

Page 54: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

OLD MANSo fast... so fast...

The Old Man closes his eyes, with a sigh, dying. Charlie turns to Merritt.

CHARLIEDid he just say...

He pops back to consciousness suddenly.

OLD MANThose slugs are fast!

He closes his eyes, with a sigh, dying. Merritt, overwhelmed, slams his fist onto the wet road, collapsing to his knees.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Dan leads the way out into the dark, Jamie and Amy following timidly behind him. The light from the cabin door spills out across the mud and the rain.

DANChad!

JAMIEChad! Come on, this isn’t funny!

Dan starts to head down the stairs.

JAMIEChad!

Dan stops suddenly and bends down. He’s standing over Chad’s skeleton, coated in slime, a look of terror frozen on its skull face.

AMYOh my god!

JAMIEChad! Ah!

AMYIs he...?

Dan slowly goes down to feel whether Chad’s spine has a pulse.

53.

Page 55: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANYes... Yes, he’s dead.

JAMIEAaah!

Jamie begins sobbing. Amy grabs her and tries to calm her down.

DANGet back in the cabin, I’m going for help. Stay inside.

Amy drags a struggling Jamie up the steps to the cabin’s porch, as Dan heads for the station wagon.

AMYCome on, Jamie.

CUT TO:

INT. STATION WAGON - NIGHT

Dan tries to make out anything beyond the pounding rain on the windshield. The car inches along the muddy country road through the trees.

DANI can’t see anything because of this rain.

The car SLAMS into something, LURCHING to a halt.

DANDarn it! I hit a log.

Steam erupts from thee engine, and Dan decides after a moment to get out and inspect things.

CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

Dan gets out of the car into the pouring rain, and goes over in front of it to see that he’s run into a large fallen tree branch, which blocks the road.

He struggles to move it, and finally tosses it out of the way as the rain continues to beat down on him.

He goes to brush his sopping hair out of his eyes, and sees that his hand is covered in a thick slime.

54.

Page 56: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANOh no. Slime.

He turns to see a giant killer slug poking its head out from behind a rock.

DANSlugs!

He ditches the car and runs back toward the cabin.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Dan enters the front door, out of breath. Amy sits on the couch, tending to Jamie, who is curled up with her head in her lap. Amy turns to Dan eyeing him.

AMYSlugs?

DANAmy, Jamie was right. They killed Chad and they tried to kill me. I got slime all over me, look.

He holds out his slimy hand for the girls to examine. Amy gets up, inspects his hand for a moment then looks up to meet his gaze.

She turns to Jamie.

AMYIf only we had believed you Jamie.

JAMIEWe’ve gotta go get help! They killed Chad.

DANWe can’t get out of here right now anyway. It’s just too risky.

Jamie gets to her feet, getting in Dan’s face.

JAMIEYou’re just afraid of taking chances! After what happened at the last track meet.

AMYJamie!

55.

Page 57: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANNo, Jamie’s right. I cost my team the race by being reckless.

He sits by the fire.

DANThere’s no way I’m going to risk my team’s life now. I think our best bet is to wait here till this thing clears up.

JAMIEWhat do you know, you’re just a washed up track star!

She storms out of the living room towards the bedrooms.

AMY(yelling after her)

Jamie! He is not washed up! Jamie!

DANI might be.

He tends to the fire as Amy looks worried.

EXT. MAIN STREET - NIGHT

TWO ELECTRICIANS work in the rain next to an open sewer grate. Electrician One lowers Electrician Two down into the manhole with a rope on a winch.

ELECTRICIAN TWO(as he disappears)

Storm’s already shorting out the city grids.

ELECTRICIAN ONEI wish just once we could get a stormy day off. What I wouldn’t give for the chance to sit inside with a good book and look out at the rain.

ELECTRICIAN TWO (O.S.)And some cocoa. Lower me a bit more.

56.

Page 58: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Electrician One hits a button, letting out more rope.

CUT TO:

INT. SEWER - CONTINUOUS

Electrician Two dangles from the rope as he looks into the darkness. On the edge of his flashlight’s beam, something moves in the shadows.

ELECTRICIAN TWOSomething’s moving down here and I want to see...

He turns just as there’s a SQUISH behind him.

CUT TO:

EXT. MAIN STREET - CONTINUOUS

Suddenly the rope tugs sharply as there’s a SCREAM.

ELECTRICIAN TWO (O.S.)Ahh! Get me out of here!

Electrician One tries to crank Electrician Two back up to the surface. His line jerks violently. He can’t do it.

ELECTRICIAN ONEHelp! Help! Why won’t anyone save us?

SPARKS and ELECTRICITY begin arcing up from the manhole, electrocuting the Electrician violently as a giant killer slug emerges from the manhole.

CUT TO:

INT. MORGUE - NIGHT

Four dead bodies are lying across tables now. The LIGHTS FLICKER as Dr. Andrews looks through a microscope. Merritt digs through a duffel bag, pulling out ammunition.

CHARLIEPower’s shorting out.

DR. ANDREWSMerritt, we have to go warn everyone.

57.

Page 59: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTI can’t go around door to door and talk with the whole town.

JASPERHell, half the town’s in here Merritt. And half of them’s dead.

Merritt looks at the dead bodies. He SIGHS and heads over to look out the window.

Dr. Andrews comes over to him.

DR. ANDREWSI’m so sorry.

MERRITTStick your sorries in a sack. You’ve got to just try to use your science to do some good for a change. And I’ve got to use my gun.

He pulls a gun out.

CHARLIEI’m coming with you Merritt.

JASPERI’ll stay here.

DR. ANDREWSI’ll come too. I can do science anywhere.

Merritt hands Charlie a gun. They start to head out.

DR. ANDREWSMerritt! You forgot one thing.

MERRITTOh, Jasper’ll come with us once he realizes he’s stuck here with three dead bodies.

DR. ANDREWSNo.

She pulls his badge out of her pocket and pins it onto him.

DR. ANDREWSSheriff.

MERRITTDoctor.

58.

Page 60: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He tips his hat and heads out, followed by Dr. Andrews. Charlie looks back at Jasper who is still sitting on the examination table.

CHARLIEThere’s a lot more than three dead bodies in here.

He exits, leaving Jasper alone. He looks around warily. After a moment, he stands.

JASPERGod damn slugs.

CUT TO:

INT. DINER - NIGHT

Henry and several CUSTOMERS stand by the windows, looking out at an empty Main Street pummeled by the rain.

TOMMY, a young boy tosses a baseball up and down, higher and higher. He miffs a catch and the ball goes flying into the window, breaking it. It rolls out into the street.

His MOTHER yells at him.

MOTHERWhat did I tell you about playing ball inside?

TOMMYSorry. I’ll get it.

He bolts for the door.

MOTHERTommy! Don’t go out there, it’s pouring --

But he’s already out on the street, chasing after his ball.

HENRYAw, ma’am. I’m sure it’s fine. It’s just a little rain.

Tommy SCREAMS out on the street. Henry immediately darts outside.

EXT. DINER - CONTINUOUS

Tommy stands a few yards away from the door, the ball in his hand. Between Tommy and Henry sits an enormous Super Slug.

HENRYDon’t move, Tommy.

Tommy drops the ball in terror, and it rolls forward, hitting the slug, which shakes a little at the impact.

TOMMYAhh!

The slug darts forward towards him. Henry quickly draws a revolver, and blasts the slug with it just in time. It falls, dead.

HENRYThank god for the NRA!

Tommy’s Mother rushes out to see what’s going on.

MOTHERWhat the heck are you--?

She sees the slug corpse.

MOTHERAre you alright?

(to Henry)Thank you, so much, Henry.

HENRYI wouldn’t thank me just yet.

He looks down Main Street, and she follows his gaze.

Coming towards them along the road are what appear to be hundreds, thousands, millions of slugs.

CUT TO:

EXT. MAIN STREET - NIGHT

Merritt slams on the brakes as he turns onto Main Street. The scene is total pandemonium: PEOPLE running everywhere, giant killer slugs latch onto people’s faces and bodies as they scream in agony.

He hops out of the car with his shotgun drawn, running towards the chaos. Dr. Andrews follows close behind him.

60.

Page 62: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Jasper stations himself behind one of the opened doors of the cruiser to take aim from afar.

The slugs are only feet away now and Merritt signals to the others to dart back with him into the local grocery store.

MERRITTThis way!

CUT TO:

INT. GROCERY STORE - NIGHT

A small group of SURVIVORS sit huddled near the entrance nursing wounds. Dr. Andrews and Jasper BANG frantically on the doors and are let in by Henry. Merritt ducks in a moment after them, slamming the door as a slug slams into the glass, splattering.

When he catches his breath, Merritt realizes his buddy Henry stands in front of him. The two hug each other.

MERRITTHenry! Thank god you’re alright!

HENRYA few million slugs ain’t gonna stop me. Where the hell’ve you been?

MERRITTListen...we’ve got to get everyone somewhere safe. You’ve got the keys to the school right?

Henry nods.

HENRYOf course I do. I am the janitor of the school. Your best friend Henry, the janitor, who has a gun.

MERRITTGrab anything you can as a weapon and then lead everyone down there.

Henry turns then stops.

HENRYOh I just remembered. We can’t go to the school.

61.

Page 63: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTWe aren’t safe here.

More slugs slam into the windows, repeatedly, almost as if they’re trying to break the glass.

MERRITTWe can lock the school down.

HENRYI’d really rather not go there.

MERRITTWhat is it Henry?

HENRYYour... uh. You were leaving today, so we were gonna throw you a little surprise party.

A slug crashes through the window. Henry shoots it.

MERRITTReally?

HENRYWhole town was gonna go. Say thanks for all these years.

MERRITTThat means a lot Henry.

A WOMAN nearby SCREAMS.

WOMANThe slugs are coming!

A giant slug enters from the back of the store as well, coming up the aisle toward them.

HENRYAlright, let’s talk about feelings later. I’ll take everyone to the school.

MERRITTAnd Henry? Be careful.

HENRYLike I don’t know that.

He turns to the group of survivors behind him, all aware that something’s going on.

62.

Page 64: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

HENRYListen up people. We’ve got a shit ton of what look to me like giant slugs. Now, I don’t know about you folks, but some stupid slugs ain’t gonna outsmart me anytime soon. Especially not in a gun fight! Grab whatever you can use as a weapon.

INT. GROCERY STORE - LATER

Survivors bustle about the store gathering weapons. Merritt approaches Dr. Andrews and Charlie.

Jasper holds a bottle of vodka close to his chest. Merritt grabs it from him.

MERRITTDamn it Jasper! This is not the time.

He turns to Dr. Andrews.

MERRITTYou follow Henry over there. I’ll head across the street to the town hall. Try and help anyone along the way.

DR. ANDREWSWe’ll do our best.

HENRYEveryone got some sort of weapon?

The group nods and murmurs in assent.

HENRYAlright, let’s get a move on then!

He tears open the front door, and darts forward, shooting a few rounds into the masses of slugs.

HENRYYeehaw! I’m Henry, the janitor! I have a gun and the keys to the school! Whoo!

The crowd trails after him, followed up by Jasper and Dr. Andrews.

MERRITTAnd Kate?

63.

Page 65: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He falters. She smiles.

DR. ANDREWS Be careful?

MERRITTUh... yeah. Be careful. Right.

She darts out onto the street after everyone, giving him one last smile through the door as he shuts it after her.

Merritt takes a moment to collect himself. He looks at the bottle of vodka in his hand and goes to put it down.

Then, suddenly, his eyes light up. He has an idea.

Merritt stands, goes down the aisles and grabs another half dozen bottles. He then grabs a large bundle of lighters. He tucks these all into the duffel bag and heads back to the front door.

He takes a deep breath.

MERRITTHere goes nothing.

He pulls the door open and steps outside, shotgun raised.

CUT TO:

EXT. GROCERY STORE - CONTINUOUS

Merritt steps outside, watching the survivors fight slugs down the street. As he moves forward a giant slug squirms into his path.

It rears its ugly head and makes disgusting SQUISHING noises to the slugs around. They begin to turn on the spot, directing themselves at Merritt.

He shoots, but misses and as the slugs ooze towards his feet, he jumps up onto the hood of a parked car. A few latch onto his boots, which he shakes off as he stands.

The slugs have him surrounded.

Merritt pulls out the vodka and begins dousing it over the slugs below. He lights it, and the fire shoots up around him. The slugs SCREECH in agony, writhing all over as they burn.

Merritt dives off of the car, bolting across the street and over the burning slugs, running full speed towards the town hall across the way.

64.

Page 66: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

EXT. TOWN HALL - MOMENTS LATER

Merritt gets to the large doors to fine they’re locked shut! He looks around desperately, as slugs surround him, and sees some windows, which he smashes open and dives through, just ahead of the slugs.

They stop at the edge of the building, next to what looks to be a big air duct. They slither towards it.

CUT TO:

INT. TOWN HALL - MOMENTS LATER

Merritt struggles to his feet on the plush carpeting, brushing himself off. He looks around and sees the Business Man standing there watching in awe.

MERRITTWhere’s Mayor Brown?

BUSINESS MANI don’t --

MERRITTRound everyone up, we’ve got to get over to the school.

BUSINESS MANYou mean go back out there?

MERRITTYes.

BUSINESS MANAre you fucking nuts? I’m just a business man here on business! We gotta wait till somebody comes to help.

MERRITTI’m the only one coming.

BUSINESS MANI’m staying right here then.

MERRITTFine by me.

Merritt walks off down the hall.

INT. MAYOR BROWN’S OFFICE - NIGHT

Mayor Brown digs haphazardly through papers in a large safe against the wall. Candy moves around the office, grabbing documents.

MAYOR BROWNWhere the hell are the bonds?

CANDYI don’t know what those are.

Mayor Brown rifles through some papers.

CANDYOh my gosh! Your dog really is sick!

MAYOR BROWN(looking up at her)

What?

CANDYIs that your dog?

She points over to the wall, and Mayor Brown looks over. A giant killer slug sits directly in front of a small vent.

Terrified, he jerks upright, bracing himself against the desk.

MAYOR BROWNOf course not!

The slug begins moving slowly towards them.

CANDYHe doesn’t look very --

The slug attacks Mayor Brown. Candy runs for it, out the double doors as the Mayor SCREAMS in agony.

MAYOR BROWNAAAAHH!

CUT TO:

INT. TOWN HALL LOBBY - CONTINUOUS

Merritt stands in the center of a CROWD of people, handing out bottles of alcohol and lighters from his duffel bag.

66.

Page 68: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTEverybody knows what a Molotov cocktail is right?

Suddenly Mayor Brown’s SCREAM pierces the air. Everyone freezes, and Merritt turns suddenly towards the source.

Candy turns the corner down the hall, screaming in panic.

CANDYDogs!

Everyone looks a little confused as she gets to the lobby. A Super Slug darts slimily down the hall behind her, followed by some smaller slugs.

BUSINESS MANSlugs!

Everyone panics. The Slugs get to the room, diving into a MAN’s chest, killing him.

Merritt shoots into the slug onslaught.

MERRITTEveryone follow me!

He unbars the large doors and heads out into the rainy night. The panicked crowd surges after him into the street.

CUT TO:

EXT. MAIN STREET - CONTINUOUS

Merritt blasts some nearby slugs with a shotgun round. A few molotov cocktails fly through the air, landing on the street in bursts of flame.

They get to street level and weave through the parked cars, fallen trees, and telephone poles down the road.

When they spot the school only a hundred yards off, they let go the last of their explosives in showers of fire, completely clearing the street ahead of them.

Merritt bolts with all his speed, followed by everyone else across the path.

At the school’s large open doors stands Henry, waving for them to hurry.

67.

Page 69: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

HENRYMerritt! This is the school where I work! Get inside!

Merritt looks back and sees a giant killer slug behind them, getting closer.

MERRITTHurry!

He turns to fire a shot at it, misses. The crowd reaches the school doors, ducking inside. Merritt turns to follow them, slips in a puddle of slime and falls hard onto the ground.

HENRYMerritt!

MERRITTI slipped in slime!

The super slug quickly approaches Merritt as he struggles to stand and aim his shotgun. Henry runs from the doors towards him to help.

It squelches to a halt, and stares at Merritt. He stands, lifts his shotgun, and takes aim.

It springs forward in SLOW MOTION, flying through the air directly at Merritt.

HENRY(in slow motion)

Noooo!

Also in SLOW MOTION Henry dives out in front of Merritt, blocking the slug’s path and falling in a struggling mass with it.

Merritt tries to aim at it, but can’t get a clean shot as Henry fights with the slug.

MERRITTI can’t get a good shot!

Henry GRUNTS and YELLS as he tries to fight the slug.

MERRITTHenry! No! Die, slug!

Merritt shoots, hitting the slug, which explodes in a heap of slimy goo. It flies straight through the school doors into the Business Man, who reacts with disgust and horror.

68.

Page 70: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Merritt bends down to hold his dying friend on the sidewalk outside the school where he worked.

HENRYYou’re my best friend Merritt. Now that I’m dying... you have to keep everyone safe, not because you’re a great sheriff. Because you’re a great man.

MERRITTHenry, I...

HENRYOh, I’m dying!

Henry goes limp. Merritt stares at him for a moment.

MERRITTHenry, Henry!

Henry doesn’t come back to life.

Merritt closes Henry’s eyes and looks out at the devastation his town has gone through. Slugs and the city burn in the streets.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Jamie paces in front of the fire, highly agitated. Amy sits on the couch watching her nervously and Dan stands rooted in front of the windows, peering out at the rain.

DANI think it might be starting to clear up. Maybe another couple of hours.

JAMIEWe don’t have another couple of hours! They killed Chad! They’re going to kill us! We’re all going to die.

Amy stands, goes over to Jamie and tries to console her.

AMYJamie, you’ve got to calm down. We’re going to be fine. It’s gonna be just fine, Jamie.

69.

Page 71: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

She tries to give Jamie a hug, but Jamie shoves her away.

JAMIEDon’t touch me! You’re glad he died, huh? I heard the way you talked about him! You hated him! I bet you’re glad the slugs ate him.

AMYThe slugs are trying to kill all of us Jamie!

JAMIENot me! I’m getting out of here!

She heads towards the door. Dan tries to reason with her.

DANJamie! Don’t do it. The radio said to stay inside.

JAMIEAll you ever do is listen to what people tell you. Coach said, Dad said, the radio said. What about what your brain says? Those slugs will kill us if we stay here.

She yanks open the door.

DANKilling yourself won’t bring Chad back.

JAMIEYes it will!

She heads outside.

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Amy ducks her head after her, but Jamie is already running full-speed in the dark and rain, away from the cabin.

AMYJamie! No!

Dan and Amy stand looking out at the trees Jamie disappeared through.

DANNo! Jamie!

70.

Page 72: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

AMY & DANJamie!

Amy turns to Dan, pleading.

AMYCatch her Dan.

DANI can’t.

AMYUse your track.

DANIt’s too dangerous.

She begins to cry, heading back into the cabin. Dan looks deflated.

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Dan reenters, and shuts the doorAmy sits on the couch, crying.

DANI don’t really do whatever anyone tells me, do I?

AMY(sniffling)

Almost everyone.

DANAmy, I...

Dan sits, trying to hold her.

AMYDon’t! Don’t touch me. You’re just going to let our friend die out there.

DANI’m trying to protect us from dying out there.

AMYThen you don’t know what friendship is.

INT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT

The gym is full of tables covered in platters of food.

Survivors are strewn about, trying to recover from their wounds. A few are moving tables to bar the windows and doors.

Dr. Andrews inspects The Mother’s slimy leg wounds as her son Tommy stands nearby, holding a blanket to his chest.

MOTHERDoctor, you’ve got to help me.

Another SURVIVOR nearby reaches up to Andrews.

SURVIVORAnd me, Doctor. Help. The slugs got me real bad.

Dr. Andrews looks overwhelmed, as more and more people reach out for help.

DR. ANDREWSI am a doctor. But not a medicine doctor. I’m a science doctor. I don’t know anything about... Damn it.

A hand rests on Dr. Andrews’s shoulder.

CHARLIEIt’s alright, Dr. Andrews. I know a little medicine.

She turns to look up at the person standing behind her. It’s a determined, confident Charlie.

DR. ANDREWSOh thank god. I just sent Jasper for the first aid kits.

CHARLIEThat’s good. Maybe you know a bit more about medicine than you give yourself credit for after all.

He kneels down to the Mother’s level.

CHARLIENow, first thing we need to do is elevate this wound.

He props her leg up and turns to the other Survivor.

72.

Page 74: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

SURVIVORI’ve seen so many people die.

CHARLIEMe too.

Dr. Andrews stands and approaches Jasper.

DR. ANDREWSJasper, start cleaning this place up. There’s dead slugs and slime everywhere.

Jasper starts cleaning as Merritt enters the gymnasium, looking like the shell of a man.

JASPERDoesn’t this school have a damn janitor?

Dr. Andrews sees Merritt react badly to this.

DR. ANDREWSMerritt! What is it?

MERRITTHenry... the super slug...

She ushers him out of the gymnasium as everyone watches quietly.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Dr. Andrews stands nearby as Merritt rinses his face in the drinking fountain.

DR. ANDREWSWere you... close?

Merritt stands, rubbing his face dry, looking a little more composed now.

MERRITTMe and Henry grew up together. I used to talk about how I wanted to marry my high school sweetheart and become sheriff and he always... Talked about how he... He wanted to be janitor and have the keys to the school and a gun. I guess it didn’t work out for either of us.

73.

Page 75: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Merritt sobs into Dr. Andrews’ arms.

DR. ANDREWSThere, there. It’s...

MERRITTHe would’ve loved cleaning up all this slime, and these dead slugs. I’m so alone.

DR. ANDREWSNo you aren’t. Look, this town loves you Merritt.

(she points off)You just have to let it.

Merritt looks to see a large banner that reads “Happy Retirement Sheriff Merritt!” He cries again.

MERRITTI’m getting snot on your lab coat.

DR. ANDREWSIt’s okay.

MERRITTI’ll pay to dry clean it.

DR. ANDREWSIt’s washable.

MERRITTYou’re a good friend, Kate. Thanks for your help.

DR. ANDREWSWe’re all here for you, Merritt. And we all love you.

He looks up, wiping his nose and eyes.

The Business Man enters, clearing his throat. He holds the dead corpse of a giant killer slug.

BUSINESS MANI don’t you son of a bitch. And you can pay the dry cleaning for my three piece suit you covered in slime.

Merritt turns, socking him square in the jaw. The Business Man collapses onto the ground, covered in dead slug. Dr. Andrews picks it up as Merritt leaves.

74.

Page 76: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSHere let me have a look at that.

CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

Jamie, disheveled, clothes torn apart with scratches on her face, stumbles through the mucky woods.

Her feet SMACK through the muddy terrain. She stops, looks around lost, but there is still a SQUISHING noise. Frightened, she turns and sees a bunny.

The bunny hops along and she sighs in relief.

JAMIEOh, thank the fucking lord. You’re just a bunny.

WHAM! A super slug comes out of nowhere, slamming onto the bunny with a goopy crunch. Jamie SCREAMS.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

The SCREAM echoes through the room. Dan and Amy have now barricaded the front door the best they can, and sit in the center of the room.

AMYJamie?

DAN(sadly)

Jamie.

A few small slugs begin to crawl under the door, creeping into the living room. Dan and Amy jump to their feet, not knowing what to do.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - CHEMISTRY LAB - NIGHT

Dr. Andrews uses the school’s rudimentary science lab to study the slug’s corpse. Merritt stands nearby, leaning against the periodic table.

75.

Page 77: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSScience seems to indicate the super slugs are communicating with the others, using their antennae. They’ve probably taught the others to be smarter and faster too.

Merritt turns and slams his hand against the wall in frustration. He gestures at the half dissected super slug.

MERRITTHow the hell are we supposed to stop these monsters?

DR. ANDREWSTheir antennae are super-sensitive to ultra high frequencies. Maybe we could get to the radio tower and --

MERRITTKate you’re a genius!

He kisses her. He turns the radio on. It CLICKS on but there’s only STATIC.

MERRITTWhere’s the radio?

DR. ANDREWSIt must still be down from the storm. We can’t use it after all.

There is some loud BANGING, some SCREAMS, a loud CRASH.

MERRITTDamn it!

He turns to leave and find the source of the commotion.

MERRITTStay here. Keep working.

DR. ANDREWSMerritt, I’m really sorry... I had no idea...

MERRITTYou’re our only hope now.

He leaves. She stares after him sadly before looking back down at the slug.

CUT TO:

76.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

Merritt runs towards the sound of the struggle. At the end of the hall lies the business man, slimed and dying on the ground.

Tommy, his Mother, Candy, and an AGREEABLE MAN struggle to keep the door shut as they bang loudly from the impacts of slugs just outside.

BUSINESS MANSheriff, sheriff...

MERRITTYes?

BUSINESS MANYou were right. I am an asshole.

MERRITTDon’t say that.

BUSINESS MANBut that’s how you have to be when you live in the city and do business.

MERRITTYou can change.

BUSINESS MANI wish... it could have been different, but... it can’t be. Oh, I think I’m going to... yep, I’m dying.

He dies.

Merritt turns to the other survivors.

MERRITTCheck all the doors. I want someone protecting every entrance and exit. We can’t let this happen to someone we like.

AGREEABLE MANYes sir!

He runs down the hall.

MERRITTYou three get back in the gym.

77.

Page 79: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Tommy and his Mother walk back along towards the gym, followed by Candy.

CANDYWhere did all these dogs come from?

Merritt looks down at the dead business man. A few small slugs squiggle under the door.

MERRITTGod save us.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Tiny slugs are now pouring into the room as Dan tries to splatter them with a fire poker. He fights them off with all his might, but they continue a slow progress into the room.

Amy stands looking back into the other rooms, she turns back to Dan, terrified.

AMYDan! They’re coming in from all over.

She hops up onto a chair nearby.

DANI know! I can see with my eyes Amy!

AMYI just don’t know what to do!

DANDo you think I do? The whole track team though that Amy. The whole school. I can’t do it anymore. I just do what my coaches tell me, or my dad, or my dad’s coaches. I don’t even know what I feel most of the time.

AMYI’m sorry Dan.

She tries to reach him, but can’t.

DANDon’t be sorry. I’m sorry. I let Jamie go. I killed Jamie.

78.

Page 80: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He starts to cry. His tears fall onto the ground around him, onto the slugs. They start SMOKING, hissing, writhing in agony.

AMYDan, your tears!

DANDon’t make fun of me Amy! I thought at least my girlfriend would --

AMYNo, Dan! Keep crying!

DANWhat?

AMYDan, you have to cry! Your tears are killing the slugs.

DANI don’t know if I can still...

AMYUse your feelings.

DANI don’t know how!

AMYHow do you feel about Chad dying?

He starts crying again.

AMYAnd probably Jamie.

DANJamie!

AMYJamie. Dan, here. Cry over these slugs!

She grabs him and starts swinging his head around over the slugs as he SOBS uncontrollably.

The slugs HISS and shrivel up as they’re hit by Dan’s strong tears. Amy clears a path through them towards the front door of the cabin, which she opens.

79.

Page 81: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - CONTINUOUS

Dan and Amy look outside to see the ground is a mass of slugs.

AMYOh god, they’re everywhere.

Dan looks up, sniffling.

DANAt least the rain stopped.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY - NIGHT

Merritt stands guard at the door as slugs trickle in under it. He tries to shoot them, but this doesn’t do much.

Jasper rushes over, holding a large spray bottle.

JASPERMerritt!

He hands the bottle to Merritt, who sees it’s bug spray.

MERRITTI don’t think bug spray’s going to cut it.

JASPERNo, no, no. It’s alcohol based.

MERRITTDamn it Jasper! This is no time to get drunk on bug spray!

Jasper grabs the bottle, and sprays the approaching slugs.

He takes a lighter, and lights it, creating an impromptu flame-thrower which he spews toward the slugs. They catch fire, smoke, and die.

JASPERHere.

He hands the bottle and lighter to Merritt.

MERRITTYou’re a genius, Jasper.

He starts spraying the slugs as they enter.

80.

Page 82: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTThis ain’t gonna last very long.

JASPERI’ll leave now so you can do other stuff!

Jasper runs off.

MERRITT(yelling down hall)

Kate! How’s that science coming?

The can starts to sputter. Merritt shakes it up and gets some more flame out of it.

MERRITT(desperate)

Kate!

Dr. Andrews bursts in, holding a pad of equations, and a test tube full of black ooze.

DR. ANDREWSI’ve got it! I’ve got it!

She runs up to Merritt.

MERRITTThis better be good news.

DR. ANDREWSSodium Chloride!

MERRITTWhat?

DR. ANDREWSWhen the slug contacted my lab coat, it started shriveling up. I couldn’t figure out what it was at first. But it was your tears Merritt!

MERRITTWhat? My tears kill slugs?

DR. ANDREWSNo, all tears. Because they have salt in them. Salt kills slugs!

MERRITTSo we should all just cry on them?

81.

Page 83: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSWe need more than that. My science indicates we’d need a whole mountain of the stuff to kill all the slugs.

MERRITT(thinking)

A mountain of salt...(he’s got it)

A mountain of salt! What about a mine?

DR. ANDREWSA what?

MERRITTThe old abandoned salt mine! Take these!

He shoves the spray can and lighter into her already full hands and bolts down the hall.

DR. ANDREWSAnd do what?

MERRITTAlcohol and fire. Use your science!

She turns and looks at the still invading slugs. She holds out the spray can and shoots at them, lighting it with the lighter.

Merritt starts to run off.

MERRITTI’ve got to find Jasper!

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

As Merritt turns the corner, Jasper runs into him.

JASPERI’m back so you can do stuff!

Merritt grabs Jasper by the shoulders.

MERRITTJasper! Are you sure about the salt mine? It there really still salt in it?

82.

Page 84: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JASPERI don’t know why after fifteen years you’d care all of a sudden.

MERRITTDamn it! Is there still salt in there?

JASPEROf course these is! I’ve been going on for years about it. “There’s still salt in those mines! Why’d they close that mine? It’s still full of salt.” Not once have you expressed interest in salt or mines, Merritt.

MERRITTI’d never seen Giant Killer Slugs before either.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - NIGHT

Dan and Amy stand halfway between the car and the cabin, stuck in a sea of slugs.

DANI’m drying out.

He shakes his head in a protective circle around them.

AMYWe’ve got to make it.

DANI can’t. I can’t cry any more Amy. I’m sorry.

AMYIt’s okay, Dan. I love you.

DANYou do?

AMYOf course, I’m your girlfriend.

DANI love you too Amy. That was the whole point of this weekend. To tell you.

83.

Page 85: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

AMYI already knew.

They kiss. Dan pulls away, steeling himself for something.

DANYou stay here, my tears will protect you. I’m going to try for the car.

AMYOh, Dan, don’t.

Dan struggles to say this. It’s very difficult.

DANI’ll... outrun them. With my track. I have to. I’m the boyfriend.

He kneels, re-tying his shoes. He gives Amy a peck and darts away toward the car before she can stop him.

AMYDan!

Dan runs full speed through the slugs. Some go flying, others cling to his shoes.

He slips, in SLOW MOTION, almost going down, but regains his balance as he gets to the car. He yanks the door open, hopping in. This takes about five seconds and is incredibly anticlimactic for something that’s such a big deal.

CUT TO:

INT. STATION WAGON - MOMENTS LATER

Dan fumbles for the keys. He tries to get them into the ignition, but his hand shakes.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED CABIN - CONTINUOUS

Amy looks down to see the slugs dying on the salt circle around her. Slugs pile up, trying to climb over their friends’ bodies.

AMYDan! I don’t know if you can see it Dan, but they’re getting closer.

84.

Page 86: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Their little slug bodies are piling up on top of each other...

Dan finally gets the keys into the ignition and the engine turns over with a ROAR.

AMYAnd pretty soon they’ll be able to slime their way over each other and into the...

The slugs finally climb onto each other, and begin to flood the circle around Amy.

AMYOh, here they come! They’re right by my --

Dan pulls the car up right alongside her, and pops the door open, smiling.

DANNeed a ride?

Amy dives into the passenger seat as the slugs pour over each other to the point where her feet just were.

CUT TO:

INT. CAR - CONTINUOUS

Amy sits up and buckles herself in.

AMYPhew! They poured over each other right onto where my feet were.

DANI know. I saw.

She slams the door, and Dan hits the gas. The car tires spin, sending slugs spewing up into the air as they take off.

CUT TO:

INT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT

Merritt rushes into the gym, followed closely by Jasper, each with salt shakers in their arms. Dr. Andrews closes the door directly behind them, as Charlie continues to help survivors.

Merritt grabs a chair and stands on it.

85.

AMY (CONT'D)

Page 87: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTAlright everyone, listen up.

JASPERHe’s going to make a speech.

The crowd begins to hush.

SURVIVOR(to other survivor)

The sheriff’s going to make a speech.

SURVIVOR TWOI can see.

Everyone stares at Merritt expectantly.

MERRITTWe’ve been doing a great job keeping those slugs at bay. But we can’t stay holed up here forever. We’ve got to kill these slimy monsters before they kill us.

MOTHERBut how, sheriff?

MERRITTSalt. Dr. Andrews here is a scientist, and she says that salt’s the only --

MANHow can we trust her?

The AGREEABLE MAN nods fervently.

AGREEABLE MANYeah!

SURVIVORShe created the damn things out in that secret government lab!

The Agreeable man again nods fervently.

AGREEABLE MANYeah!

The crowd is starting to get a little unruly.

MERRITTWe’ve got to trust her!

86.

Page 88: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He pulls Dr. Andrews over near him.

SURVIVOR TWOShe’s a scientist!

AGREEABLE MANYeah!

DR. ANDREWSScience may have created these creatures, but it can also destroy them. Have any of you ever seen a slug with salt? It works!

CHARLIEIt’s true! I learned about slugs when I was in college!

The crowd nods in assent. The Agreeable Man again nods fervently at this too.

AGREEABLE MANI think he’s right!

MERRITTSo! We need enough salt to kill all these slugs, and the only place we’ll find that is the abandoned salt mine on the edge of town.

MANThere ain’t no salt in there! That’s why they closed it in the first place!

MERRITTJasper here, says differently.

Merritt waves Jasper over to him as well.

SURVIVORThe town drunk? You gonna listen to him about this?

MERRITTI believe him too.

The crowd scoffs a little at this, outrage, etc.

SURVIVOR TWOYou believe everybody!

87.

Page 89: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTBefore he was the town drunk, that man saved my life down in that mine. If Jasper says the old abandoned salt mine on the edge of town still has salt in it, then you better believe it does.

AGREEABLE MANYeah!

A few people stare at him.

MERRITTWe lure them in there, and then... I don’t know.

CANDYThe Mayor said the mine’s lined with explosives. He was explaining important things to me.

MERRITTThank you Candy.

CANDYIt’s actually Cynthia. I just wanted him to like me.

MERRITTSo, we blow it up once they’re inside. We just have to get out there somehow. Does anyone have a car?

LOUD BANGS echo from the door to the outside. Everyone stops and stares as the noises continue to grow louder and louder.

Merritt moves to the door warily. He readies the shotgun at his shoulder and signals for a few people to stay on guard.

The thuds from the door continue to grow more frantic. But now they can hear YELLS and SCREAMS from outside.

Dr. Andrews opens the door and they find Dan and Amy standing in front of them as the sun finally rises in the background.

AMYMind if we come in?

AGREEABLE MANBy all means!

88.

Page 90: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANDo you mind if we bring our car in too?

CUT TO:

INT. GYMNASIUM - LATER THAT MORNING

The station wagon is now parked in the center of the room as Merritt and Jasper inspect it.

Amy sits near Dan, whose slimy, injured legs are being treated by Charlie.

MERRITTIt’s a damn good thing you kids made it out of there alright.

DANWell, the two of us.

MERRITTThere were...

DANTwo more.

MERRITTIt would have been different if I’d done something sooner. Mind if I borrow those car keys?

Dan tosses Merritt the keys.

DANBe my guest.

He stands, wincing.

DANBut I’m coming with you.

AMYDan!

JASPERI’m coming too Merritt.

MERRITTNo! You two, don’t you get it?

Doctor Andrews approaches, putting her hand on Merritt’s shoulder to teach him a lesson.

89.

Page 91: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DR. ANDREWSLet them help you. If there’s any time to let people, it’s now.

JASPERNobody knows those mines like I do. I’ll lure all the slugs in, you two drive out to the control room. I’ll signal you with the alarm, then BOOM. We trap the slugs.

MERRITTOh, that simple, huh? Why don’t we just do what you tell us Jasper?

DANNo. We’re gonna do what I tell you. I’m going to lure the slugs.

MERRITTNo way, city boy! Jasper knows those mines.

DANBut I know track.

This shuts Merritt up.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - GYMNASIUM - LATER

Merritt and Jasper sit in the car, as Dan talks with Amy nearby.

AMYI love you Dan.

DANI love you too Amy. Thanks for giving me feelings.

He gets in the back seat as Charlie talks to Merritt.

CHARLIEOnce you lure those slugs out there, I’ll get my car from the morgue and follow you.

MERRITTGood thinking Charlie. We might need a... doctor.

90.

Page 92: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

CHARLIE(surprised)

You really mean it Merritt? I could be a doctor?

MERRITTI already believe you are. Now you just gotta believe in yourself.

Charlie goes back to work treating slug victims. Dr. Andrews moves forward with a vial, which she hands Merritt.

DR. ANDREWS Use these pheromones to attract the slugs. I made them with science.

He takes them.

MERRITTYou did good, Kate.

DR. ANDREWSThanks. Let’s talk about our feelings after you blow those slugs up.

Merritt nods, turning the ignition. The car ROARS to life and they roll out of the gym as some survivors open the doors.

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL - MORNING

Slugs writhe in the morning light, surrounding the school. The station wagon pulls slowly towards the outside world.

The survivors throw a few salt bombs to help clear their path before the school’s doors shut behind them.

CUT TO:

INT. STATION WAGON - CONTINUOUS

Merritt pilots the car as Dan and Jasper continue salt-bombing the road. Merritt picks up speed as the slugs thin.

Jasper throws his last salt shaker.

JASPERWe’re out of salt.

Merritt turns to Dan.

91.

Page 93: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTAre you sure you want to do this? What if you don’t get out in time?

DANSheriff, my coach always told me that my track would mean I’d have to make tough choices. But using my track for good, to save this town and these people? That’s an easy choice. I only wish I’d made it sooner.

Merritt nods, looking back at the town in his rear view mirror. In the distance it almost looks peaceful.

MERRITTMe too.

CUT TO:

EXT. MINE GATE - DAY

The station wagon pulls up to the mine complex’s gated entrance. A sign reads: “Old Abandoned Salt Mine. Since Fifteen Years Ago.”

Merritt slows the car, followed by a tide of slugs. Dan rolls his window down and shoots the lock off with the shotgun.

JASPERDamn! City boy can shoot.

DANVideo games.

Dan smiles and they roll into the mine complex.

CUT TO:

EXT. MINE COMPLEX - DAY

The car reaches the summit of a hill and stops. Below, a few hundred yards away, is the mine entrance. To the left a few thousand yards is the control room.

Dan hops out.

MERRITTYou better make sure you get outta there in time.

92.

Page 94: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

DANYou better make sure you blow that mine.

Merritt pulls the car away. The slugs are closing in on Dan, who starts for the mine entrance.

CUT TO:

EXT. MINE ROAD - DAY

Merritt speeds the car down the gravel road as fast as he can towards the far off control room.

CUT TO:

EXT. MINE ROAD - FURTHER DOWN - DAY

Dan opens the vial of pheromones, looking back at the slugs quickly approaching. He pours them over himself, YELLING.

DANFollow me slugs! Follow me!

He starts down the hill towards the shaft. The slugs gain on him as he stumbles and slides in the steep gravel.

When he gets to the shaft entrance, he sees the slugs still on pace to catch him, and ducks into the mine’s dark tunnel.

CUT TO:

EXT. CONTROL ROOM - DAY

The control room is little more than a shack with a sign that says “Control Room” on it.

The station wagon slams to a halt in front. Merritt and Jasper jump out of the car.

CUT TO:

INT. CONTROL ROOM - DAY

Inside the control room are many panels of buttons.

The window looks down at the shaft entrance, where they see Dan disappear inside followed by millions of slugs.

CUT TO:

93.

Page 95: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

INT. MINE SHAFT - DAY

Dan struggles along the mine shaft, followed by the deafening echo of slugs squishing along behind him.

He reaches a large control panel and hits a big red button, sending up an alarm. He sprints another few yards forward before he reaches a side shaft and begins to scrabble up it.

CUT TO:

INT. CONTROL ROOM - DAY

Merritt and Jasper watch the mine, and see the last of the slugs enter. But they see no sign of an exiting Dan.

JASPERThat’s the last of them!

MERRITTLet’s give the kid a minute.

An ALARM starts blaring, lights flashing.

JASPERThat’s the signal!

MERRITTWhere is he?

He scans the distance for any sign of Dan.

JASPERMerritt, we can’t wait!

Merritt rests his hand on a large red button.

MERRITTBoy, you better get out of there some secret way I don’t know about.

He presses the button dramatically. Nothing happens for a moment, and then BOOM!

The mine erupts in a cloud of smoke and flying rock. Jasper and Merritt dive to the floor as rubble soars overhead.

Clouds of dust fill the room, and Jasper rolls out the door.

CUT TO:

94.

Page 96: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

EXT. CONTROL ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Jasper crawls along the ground through the thick clouds of dust, as the small pieces of rubble slowly stop falling.

He looks down at the obliterated mine, not a slug in sight.

JASPERI’m not losing another man to this mine.

He looks back, but Merritt is nowhere to be found.

JASPERMerritt?

Jasper heads down the slope to start digging for Dan.

CUT TO:

INT. CONTROL ROOM - DAY

Merritt moans on the floor, a large rock resting on his chest. With an enormous effort, he shoves it off of him, but can’t stand at all. He looks out at the mine, COUGHING. He LAUGHS, triumphant but exhausted. He gasps for breath but can’t seem to get it.

CUT TO:

EXT. CAVED IN MINE - DAY

Jasper digs through the rubble when a HAND emerges in a sudden burst of debris.

JASPERKid! You’re alive!

He helps to dig Dan out, yanking him free of the rocks. Dan COUGHS, covered in dust and slime.

JASPERYou did it! You killed the...

He hears a SQUISHING noise, and a RUMBLING sound, as slugs start crawling from under the rocks.

DANUh oh.

Jasper looks around, scared.

95.

Page 97: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JASPERMerritt! Help!

On the edge of the mine, a SIREN ROARS as a cloud of dust billows behind an approaching van.

CUT TO:

EXT. MINE ROAD - CONTINUOUS

Charlie stops his van and hops out, running towards the collapsed Merritt.

CHARLIEMerritt!

MERRITTCharlie, you’ve got to help me. I... can’t breathe.

Charlie kneels down to examine his friend.

CHARLIEYour lungs are collapsed.

MERRITTDo something.

Charlie looks around, panicked.

CHARLIEI’m not a doctor.

MERRITTYes you are. Believe. I’m dying...

Merritt COUGHS, and begins wheezing for air, his head falling to the ground.

CHARLIENot on my watch!

He pulls out a scalpel and cuts Merritt’s shirt open.

CHARLIEThis’ll probably hurt a lot.

He rolls him onto his side, slicing along the rib cage, making a deep incision. Merritt SCREAMS in agony.

CHARLIESorry.

96.

Page 98: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

He grabs a plastic tube from his bag, and shoves it deep into Merritt’s now gaping chest. It immediately starts draining blood out into the dirt.

CHARLIEYour lung’s collapsed.

Merritt COUGHS, closing his eyes as his head lolls back, still and unmoving.

CHARLIEMerritt? Oh god, I don’t have any garbage bags.

Merritt suddenly sits up.

MERRITTYou did it!

Charlie hugs Merritt, which hurts a lot.

MERRITTHow’d you learn to do that?

CHARLIEDraining dead bodies.

JASPER (O.S.)Merritt! Help!

Merritt and Charlie look to see Jasper and Dan, surrounded by slugs.

MERRITTTheir antennae are sensitive to ultra high frequencies!

JASPERWhat?

MERRITTYou’ve got to sing Jasper. Use your singing!

Jasper, terrified, looks around at the slugs as they’re now mere feet away from him.

MERRITTIt can do good too!

Jasper opens his mouth wide and begins SINGING in a high pitched tone.

97.

Page 99: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

JASPERLA --

Jasper’s voice CRACKS. The slugs continue their approach as he clears his throat again.

JASPER(getting higher)

LA LA LA LA LA...

The slugs’ antennae begin gyrating, their bodies quivering.

Jasper keeps singing, singing his heart out, but the slugs won’t die. They’re surround Merritt and Charlie as well.

DANIt’s not working!

MERRITTWhat’s going on?

Through the mine gates, Dr. Andrews runs up to them.

DR. ANDREWSIt’s not enough! They’re absorbing the sound waves! It’s science!

Charlie, determined, moves down the hill towards Dan and Jasper, singing as well.

CHARLIELAAAA!

The slugs’ bodies quiver even more violently. But they’re still moving in on our heroes.

Charlie and Jasper begin singing a super high-frequency, operatic duet together, as Charlie comes closer and closer.

Merritt grabs Kate’s hand.

MERRITTIf we get eaten by giant slugs, I just want you to know --

Dan points up behind them suddenly, YELLING.

DANThe whole town’s here!

Merritt and Dr. Andrews turn as the whole town marches down towards them. They approach the slugs, SINGING together in harmony. As they do the slugs begin undulating, expanding.

98.

Page 100: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

MERRITTYou’re doing it!

A slug erupts in a mass of slime. Then another, and another. Everyone keeps singing as they blow up slugs.

When the final slug explodes, the mass of people rush down the hill, CHEERING, WHOOPING, and APPLAUDING loudly. They run to Charlie and Jasper.

They both bow nobly, and the crowd lifts them up on their arms, high into the air.

CUT TO:

EXT. MINE COMPLEX - DUSK

At the summit of the hill, overlooking the destroyed shaft and exploded slug juices, Merritt and Charlie support the slightly injured, but alright Dan as he stands between them.

Jasper stands on the other side of Merritt, who turns to him as the sun sets in the distance.

MERRITTLooks like we made it old friend.

JASPERI guess there wasn’t any salt in that mine after all.

Everyone LAUGHS heartily at this light humorous end note.

Dan puts his arm around Amy and grabs her tight.

AMYWell that sure was an eventful weekend.

Everyone LAUGHS heartily at this light humourous end note.

CHARLIEI’m black.

Everyone LAUGHS heartily at this light humorous end note.

Merritt puts his arm around Dr. Andrews.

MERRITTJust promise me you won’t be doing any more science.

99.

Page 101: GIANT KILLER SLUGS

Everyone LAUGHS heartily at this light humorous end note.

CUT TO:

EXT. POLICE STATION - DAY

Merritt stands next to Dan’s station wagon. A CROWD is nearby to send him off. Dr. Andrews watches as he finishes tying the last of his things to the roof.

DR. ANDREWS Well Merritt, I don’t know what else could convince you that your town does love you.

Merritt looks to see all the smiling, cheerful faces surrounding him.

MERRITTI know Kate. But I need to learn how to love myself.

Dr. Andrews grabs his hand.

DR. ANDREWSWell I can help you with that.

She kisses him. Everyone CHEERS. Little do they know that...

CUT TO:

EXT. MOUNTAIN ROAD - DAY

The station wagon drives past a sign that reads “Denver 50 miles.” Merritt drives, with Kate Andrews, former scientist, in the passenger seat.

A corrugated steel pipeline runs alongside the highway. They follow a curve on the mountain road and disappear.

AS WE FLY high above, we see a Giant Killer Slug oozing along the open pipeline, squishing forward, persistent, unrelenting, and very, very hungry for revenge.

CUT TO BLACK.

THE END?

100.
