Welcome back to the Opera!
For many of us, this will be the first live music performance we have attended in fifteen months. I am so excited for us to reunite as the Austin Opera family at the Circuit of the Americas for this epic production of Puccini’s beloved masterpiece, Tosca.
While this past year has certainly been challenging for arts institutions around the globe, we have so much to be proud of at Austin Opera. The staff, with the support of the Board
of Trustees, sprang into action within days of the shutdown last March and created Live from Indy Terrace, the first digital program launched by an American opera company featuring new content. The creativity kept flowing in the months following as we formed new partnerships with Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Austin’s Blue Starlite Drive In, Austin PBS, Circuit of the Americas, and more to engage our audiences and community with opera films and opportunities to connect at a time when we needed joy and music in our lives.
These accomplishments, fueled by the momentum of the last several years of innovation and artistic excellence, inspired the opera community to select Austin Opera as Opera Company of the Year 2020 in a poll conducted by BroadwayWorld.com. To top it off, our very own Sarah and Ernest Butler Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor, Timothy Myers, was awarded Conductor of the Year 2020.
On behalf of the Austin Opera Board of Trustees, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for our donor family, patrons, Guild, and the entire Austin community for their overwhelming generosity of spirit and resources which have not only sustained us but allowed us to shine this past year. I am thrilled that Timothy Myers, our new Sarah and Ernest Butler Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor, finally has a live audience for his talents. And we are proud to welcome our three stars – Latonia Moore, Adam Smith, and Aleksey Bogdanov – to our performance roster for the first time.
But most importantly, we are thankful for you, our devoted audience members whose safety and enjoyment power our every decision, for coming out tonight and for observing the guidelines on masking and social distancing. It is so good to see you in person again!
The hum of our rehearsals coming back to life has been a joyful noise more than a year in the making, and we are so excited to share this special, under-the-stars production of Tosca with you here at COTA. DIRECTOR’S NOTEI love directing Tosca with its gripping story and the most beautiful music. This production is set in June of 1943 before the end of World War II and the fall of fascism. Though originally set in June 1800, we updated the story of Tosca without losing any of its essential pathos and drama. Wartime is fraught with fear and uncertainty for all. These emotions, along with love, jealousy, and passion permeate the story of Tosca. With the allied invasion of Italy and Sicily in 1943, and the lack of support for Mussolini by King Victor Emmanuelle, fascism began to crumble. This development parallels the time of the original setting for Tosca. The Neapolitans were still trying their best to keep control of Rome while at war with Republican France. It was a violent time.
During our design process, set designer Tim Mackabee found “The Danteum”: an unrealized monument designed by the modernist architect Giuseppe Terragni at the behest of Benito Mussolini’s Fascist government. The structure was meant to be built in Rome to celebrate the Italian poet Dante, glorify Imperial Rome and extol the virtues of a strong fascist state. We decided to use a version of this structure as the backdrop for our updating to World War II. The opera takes place in three different locations: inside the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, in the Palazzo Farnese, and the upper parts of the Castel Sant’Angelo, all three of which exist to this day.

SYNOPSISAct I (45 minutes): Rome, June 1943. Cesare Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner, rushes into the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle to hide. Once he has disappeared, a sacristan enters and then the painter Mario Cavaradossi, who sets to work on his portrait of Mary Magdalene. The painting has been inspired by the Marchesa Attavanti, whom Cavaradossi has seen in the church but does not know. While he works, he compares the dark-haired beauty of his lover, the singer Floria Tosca, to that of the blonde Marchesa Attavanti. Angelotti, ventures out and is recognized by Cavaradossi. The painter gives him food and hurries him back into the chapel as Tosca is heard calling from outside. Suspicious, she jealously questions Cavaradossi, then reminds him of their rendezvous that evening at his villa. Suddenly recognizing the Marchesa Attavanti in the painting, she accuses him of being unfaithful, but he assures her of his love. When Tosca has left, Angelotti emerges from the chapel. A cannon signals that the police have discovered the escape, and he and Cavaradossi flee to the painter’s villa. The sacristan enters with choirboys who are preparing to sing in a Te Deum that day celebrating a victory. Their excitement is silenced by the arrival of Baron Scarpia, a high-ranking military official, who is searching for Angelotti. When Tosca comes back looking for Cavaradossi, Scarpia shows her a fan with the Attavanti crest that he has just
DIRECTOR’S NOTE found. Finding her suspicions confirmed, Tosca bursts into tears. She vows vengeance and leaves as the church fills with worshipers. Scarpia sends his men to follow her to Cavaradossi’s villa, where he thinks Angelotti is hiding. While the congregation sings the Te Deum, Scarpia declares that he will bend Tosca to his will.
25-MINUTE INTERMISSION
Act II (40 minutes): In his study at the Palazzo Farnese, Scarpia anticipates the pleasure of having Tosca in his power. The spy Spoletta arrives, explaining that he was unable to find Angelotti. Instead he brings in Cavaradossi. While Scarpia interrogates the painter, Tosca is heard singing at a royal gala in the same building. Scarpia sends for her and she enters just as Cavaradossi is being taken away to be tortured. Frightened by Scarpia’s questions and Cavaradossi’s screams, Tosca reveals Angelotti’s hiding place. Cavaradossi is carried in, hurt and dazed. Realizing what has happened, he angrily confronts Tosca, when the officer Sciarrone rushes in to announce a defeat for Scarpia’s side. Cavaradossi shouts out his defiance of tyranny and is dragged off to be executed. Scarpia, calmly resuming his supper, suggests to Tosca that he would let Cavaradossi go free if she’d give herself to him. Scarpia insists, when Spoletta interrupts: faced with capture, Angelotti has killed himself. Tosca, now forced to give in or lose her lover, agrees to Scarpia’s proposition. The baron orders a mock execution for Cavaradossi, after which he is to be freed. As soon as Scarpia has written a safe-conduct for the lovers, Tosca kills him and quietly leaves the room.
Act III (30 minutes): At dawn, Cavaradossi awaits execution at the Castel Sant’Angelo. He bribes the jailer to deliver a farewell letter to Tosca. Overcome with memories of love, he gives in to his despair. Tosca enters. She explains to him what has happened and the two imagine their future freedom. As the firing squad appears, Tosca instructs Cavaradossi how to fake his death convincingly. The soldiers fire and depart. Tosca urges Cavaradossi to hurry, but when he doesn’t move, she realizes that Scarpia has betrayed her and that the bullets were real. Spoletta rushes in to arrest Tosca for murder. She cries out to Scarpia and leaps from the battlement.
CONDUCTORTIMOTHY MYERSSARAH AND ERNEST BUTLER PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR & ARTISTIC ADVISORInternationally acclaimed for his eloquence, energy and command on the podium, Timothy Myers is driven by a wide breadth of repertoire and projects. In the 2020-2021 season, he begins his post as the Principal Conductor of Austin Opera, where he has served as Artistic Advisor since 2018. His Austin tenure begins with a concert featuring Isabel Leonard, filmed for broadcast on PBS and international digital and DVD release, and a production of Tosca at the Circuit of the Americas amphitheater. Also
this season, Mr. Myers builds on his long-time relationships with two institutions, filming David T. Little and Royce Vavrek’s opera Vinkensport at Houston Grand Opera and a subscription concert with the North Carolina Symphony.
In opera, highlights of recent seasons include the Santa Fe Opera leading Bizet’s Les pêcheurs des perles, the world premiere of The Fix (Joel Puckett / Eric Simonson) at Minnesota Opera, a new production of West Side Story at Houston Grand Opera, a new production of Massenet’s Don Quichotte at the Wexford Festival (his third appearance there), and a concert version of Act III of Siegfried at North Carolina Opera.
A protégé of Lorin Maazel, Myers’ symphonic engagements have led him to work with orchestras internationally including the American, Jerusalem, Beijing NCPA, Milwaukee, North Carolina, Portland, Toledo, Chautauqua Symphonies, as well as the Malaysian, Johannesburg and Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestras.
With the close of the 16/17 season, Myers concluded his tenure as the Artistic and Music Director of North Carolina Opera, where his work inspired a precipitous rise in the performance standard and the forging of collaborations with multiple local and national organizations. Repertoire highlights from his tenure include Wagner’s Das Rheingold, Act II of Tristan und Isolde and Act I of Die Walküre, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Dvorak’s Rusalka.
In the fall of 2020, Mr. Myers joined the Program for Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School, with emphasis in Disruptive Innovation and Design Thinking.

David is a guest artist and performs master classes at several Young Artist programs and universities including the San Francisco Opera Center Adler Fellowship Program, Atelier Lyrique at L’Opéra de Montréal, Maryland Opera Studio and Ithaca College. A graduate from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Theatre, David has a certificate from École Jacques-Lecoq in Paris, France. David served as the Artistic Director of the Mill City Summer Opera in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he directed the annual summer offerings of Pagliacci, Barber of Seville, Tosca, Daughter of the Regiment, Sweeney Todd, and Maria de Buenos Aires. Currently he is the Artistic Director of Out of the Box Opera in Minneapolis, a company dedicated to creating high-quality operatic experiences in site-specific locations, most notably with Diva Cage Match, an epic battle of voices, egos, and talent in a boxing gym.
DIRECTORDAVID LEFKOWICHDavid Lefkowich is an accomplished stage director and fight choreographer and has enjoyed success with different companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatre alla Scala, San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, and Glimmerglass Opera. Upcoming directing engagements include La Cenerentola with Annapolis Opera and Cavalleria Rusticana at Opera Colorado. Recent directing engagements include a site-specific Acis and Galatea for Out of the Box Opera in the catacombs of a former Pillsbury Mill in Minneapolis, an immersive Pagliacci at Boston Lyric Opera, Tosca at

Ms. Moore returned to the Metropolitan Opera in the 2019 – 2020 season to sing Serena in a new production of the Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, which received the Grammy award,
and which the New York Times noted she “stopped the show...from almost vibrato-less, celestial high stretches to chilling, chesty low phrases, all of which she sang grippingly.”
Ms. Moore has received global acclaim for her interpretation of the title role in Aida, a role which she has sung at Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opernhaus Zürich, Opera Australia, Teatro Colón, English National Opera, New National Theatre Tokyo, Dallas Opera, San Diego Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Detroit Opera, Polish National Opera, and at the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under James Conlon.
Additional operatic highlights include appearances as Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera, Semperoper Dresden, and Hamburg State Opera; Liù in Turandot at Royal Opera Covent Garden and Bilbao; the title role in Tosca with Opera Australia and Washington National Opera; Elisabeth in Don Carlo with Opera Australia; Mimì in La bohème with Semperoper Dresden; Micaëla in Carmen, Elvira in Ernani, and Lucrezia in I due Foscari at Bilbao; Desdemona in Otello at Bergen National Opera; Serena in Porgy and Bess at both English National Opera and De Nationale Opera Amsterdam; and an appearance on the 50th Anniversary Gala of the Metropolitan Opera.
Honors and awards include the Maria Callas Award from Dallas Opera, a Richard Tucker Foundation grant, first prize in the Marseilles Competition, and first prize in the International Competition dell’Opera in Dresden.

ALEKSEY BOGDANOVRussian-American baritone Aleksey Bogdanov begins the 2020-2021 with a return to Gran Teatre del Liceu for Crespel/Luther in Les Contes d’Hoffmann and makes debuts with Austin Opera as Scarpia in Tosca and Central City Opera as Rigoletto. COVID-19 cancellations include Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West at the Royal Swedish Opera conducted by Alan Gilbert and Rigoletto with Tulsa Opera. He opened the 2019-2020
season at Hawaii Opera Theatre as Scarpia in Tosca. Additional performances that season included Amonasro in Aida with Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Tulsa Opera, and Beck Weathers in Everest and the title role in Aleko with Chicago Opera Theater. Concert appearances included Verdi Requiem with the Colorado Symphony and The Phoenix Symphony, and Handel’s Messiah with the Richmond Symphony.
Mr. Bogdanov started the 2018-2019 season with his debut at Maryland Lyric Opera as Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West. He returned to Washington National Opera as Lieutenant Horstmayer in Silent Night, as well as covered Scarpia in Tosca and the title role in Eugene Onegin. Additionally, he made his debut at Chicago Opera Theater as Starbuck in Moby Dick, Pasha Seid in Il corsaro in Warsaw, Poland, and Peasant/Narrator in Gurre-Lieder with KBS Symphony Orchestra. Aleksey will join the roster of The Metropolitan Opera in 2021-2022 to cover the role of Shchelkalov in Boris Godunov.

Since then, he has appeared in more than 400 performances of 40 operas at The Met, including “Live from The Met” telecasts. He has appeared many times in their productions of the standard repertoire including Tosca,
La bohème, La fanciulla del West, La traviata, Adriana Lecouvreur, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Macbeth, Manon, Don Carlo, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Manon Lescaut, and Le nozze di Figaro.
His recent appearances at this esteemed house include several The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD broadcasts including Manon, La fanciulla del West, The Nose, Werther, Manon Lescaut, Le nozze di Figaro, La bohème, and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Mr. Cokorinos’ upcoming engagements include Simone in Gianni Schicchi with Tulsa Opera, Benoit/Alcindoro in La bohème at the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy, a return to Los Angeles Opera for Il Trovatore and as Bitterolf in Tannhäuser, and a return to the Metropolitan Opera for La bohème, Le nozze di Figaro, and Ariadne auf Naxos.
WILLIAM GUANBO SUWilliam Guanbo Su makes his Austin Opera debut in these performances of Tosca. He is currently a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio. While with the company, he made his debut as the Usher in Rigoletto; unfortunately subsequent outdoor performances of Sparafucile in the same title, Zuniga in Carmen, the Second Night in Parsifal, and the Sadistic Sailor in Breaking the Waves were cancelled by the
COVID-19 pandemic. He will return to Houston Grand Opera for a third year in the studio and a number of mainstage roles next season. This summer, he sings Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and Garibaldo in Rodelinda, both role debuts, at the Aspen Music Festival at which he previously sang his first performances of Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia. Also next season, he will make his Metropolitan Opera debut as the Jailer in Tosca. He is an Ambassador for Opera for Peace and sang Verdi’s “O tu palermo” for the organization’s digital concert celebrating World Opera Day. On the concert stage, he has sung Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall with the Cecilia Chorus of New York. He is a 2019 Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals winner and first prize winner of the Liederkranz Foundation’s Song Competition. He received his Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, at which he sang the Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Pluton in Hippolyte et Aricie, and earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music.

EVAN K. BROWNKnown for his “unfailingly vigorous” tenor voice, this Texas native has been growing in demand. Beginning his career in modest roles with Austin Opera such as Amelia’s servant in Un Ballo in Maschera, Ed Mavole in Kevin Puts’s The Manchurian Candidate, and the Notary in Le Fille du Regiment; Evan has matured into more demanding central roles. Evan has been seen as Luigi in Il Tabarro with Angels Vocal Art prior to his 2020
Apprenticeship with Sarasota Opera, where he covered and performed Benvolio in their Winter production of Romeo et Juliette. Moreover, Evan was heavily featured in many of Sarasota’s 2020 Winter Apprentice Concerts performing scenes from such operatic gems as Un Ballo in Maschera, I Masnadieri, La Traviata, Dejanice, and Salvator Rosa. His concert work also includes performances with the Austin Gilbert and Sullivan society, Opera in Concert, the Meadows Opera Theatre, the SMU Meadows Symphony, as well as Gastone in Irving Symphony’s La Traviata. Additionally, Evan was named winner of the 2018 SMU concerto competition; and was a semi-finalist in both the 2019 Lois Alba Aria Competition, as well as the 2019 Young Texas Artist Competition. Prior to COVID-19, Evan was contracted to perform Emperor Altuom in Turandot with Austin Opera. More recently, Evan has digitally performed Count Vaudemont in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta with Eurasia Festival as well as Don José in Carmen with MIOpera. His upcoming engagements include: Rodolfo in La Bohème and Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi.
