A well-known, casual and popular family dining restaurant chain in Finland that has served its customers for decades with great success.

ROSSO PORVOO

The first restaurant was opened in Lahti in 1978. Today, the chain has expanded to 42 restaurants throughout Finland and to Tallinn, Estonia.

The first Rosso restaurant that included the new concept was opened in July in Porvoo. The brief was to update the restaurant con-cept to meet future market needs. The ‘need’ for a new concept was instigated by the target groups behavioural changes for exam-ple the demand for more flexible opening hours, the concern and interest of food sources and its authenticity.

The new Rosso concept has an Italian diner, Botteg/Cuccina at-mosphere with a focus on food.

The most significant operative change to the chain of restaurants will be the installation of an open wood burning oven. It is essential to the new concept and will make Rosso’s pizzas even tastier and more famous. In addition, the res-taurant concept will include a deli where customers can buy Italian food ingredients such as olive oil, balsamic vinegar, pastas and even ice cream. The concept also in-cluded family needs and designed designated play areas for children.

The brief was to upgrade the restau-rant’s interior design to match the Kamppi Memphis restaurant. Some of the service functions such as the bar were re-located.

Tammer Trattoria, an Italian restaurant with a wine cellar, was converted from a cater-ing kitchen that served food for a summer-time restaurant, Tammerin puisto. The previ-ous restaurant space was also included in the renovation.

Tammer Trattoria is located in Tammerin Park by the river in the heart of the lush green city of Tampere. The restaurant ambi-ence is blissful – it is as if Tammer Trattoria has always been there – rustic yet classic - timeless.

The F8 restaurant is located in the heart of Helsinki on the 8th floor of Stockmann, the largest department store in the Nor-dic countries. F8 restaurant is the flagship restaurant of Fazer Oy, the largest food service company in the Nordic and Baltic countries, and also the biggest restaurant complex in Helsinki. The project was com-pleted in two phases, spring 2009 and second phase the following spring.

The F8 houses a total of 8 restaurants, bars and cafes, including the luxurious champagne bar ‘Sweet’. The challenge for a brief such as this; was to design a variety of restaurants, that can fit 800 seats, all with a different visual image, catering for a variety of foods yet execut-ing a relaxed, personal environment with clear wayfinding strategy to all spaces. GI design was responsible of the visual im-age of all the restaurants, as well as the architecture and interior design.

The starting point for the design pro-ject was that the restaurant chain’s visual image needed a fresher and a more updated look.

The Kamppi restaurant was chosen as the pilot restaurant conveying the new image/look. The restaurant was com-pletely renovated. The new interior de-sign proposal supplied more seats and services that has altected positively on sales.

The Project brief was that the old staff cafeteria needed more customer seats and more space for the service points, due to in-crease in staff levels, within the existing area.

The re-design and re-planning allowed the cafeteria to achieve more customer seats, double the amount of cashier desks, less of cafeteria, more like a restaurant - a warm ambience and comfortable meeting point.

The restaurant was completely refurbished and has 278 customer seats.

Event Arena Bank is a large complex of conference facilities and restaurants locat-ed in the city centre of Helsinki. The build-ing has always been a bank dating back to the 1950s. In addition to hosting events, the facility is also used as a staff restau-rant for the companies from the surround-ing area.

The press has called the ‘Bank’ the most magnificent “canteen” in the city. Our task was to design an attractive and comfort-able interior that would be complimented with a 1950s retro design style.
