ABOUT GHOST RANCH

Ghost Ranch is a place of magnifi-cent natural beauty, comprising deep, multicolored canyons and bluffs, plains, grasslands and streams. Its rocks span 130 mil-lion years of ancient geologicalhistory, representing lakes, flood-plains and deserts.

Its fossils illuminate the beginning of the Age of Dinosaurs in North America and provide a new para-digm in the world of paleontology. Its archaeological record predates adobe walls and kivas; its hearths and other sites date to 8,000 years ago. Its history includes Native Americans and Spanish, Mexican, French and Anglo im-migrations, a rough and tumble ranching era, a dude ranch, visi-tors and residents such as Ansel Adams, Arthur Pack, Georgia O’Keeffe and Robert Oppen-heimer and today is an education and retreat center operated by the Presbyterian Church (USA) which is welcoming to all.

The landscape attracted first an-cient people, for its resources, and later colonizers from other lands, including adventurers, artistsand entrepreneurs who were at-tracted by the stunning beauty. Like O’Keeffe, they were at first oblivious to the geological and paleontological contexts of the sediments, and to the Spirit of the Creator, and were simply amazed by the stunning beauty. So many who come into contact with Ghost Ranch come to appreciate its myriad dimensions of beauty and spirituality.

About Your Staypeace, quiet,

stars and simplicity

Simple Lodging Lodging and meals are packaged together. Unless otherwise specified lodging rates are double occupancy.

Ghost Ranch offers rustic, lodging accommodations reflective of its origins as a working ranch.

Our rooms are basic, no frills, but clean and comfortable all with magnificent views. All units provide breathtaking vistas of colorful sand-stone cliffs, cottonwoods and distant mountains. Rooms do not have air conditioning but most have fans.

Sleeping rooms are free from phones, televisions, internet and alarm clocks.

Cell phone service is very limited and Wi-Fi access is available only at certain spots around the Ranch. We suggest you bring a calling card or credit card, if you need to make long-distance calls.

All lodging options are within walking distance of classroom buildings, the Dining Hall, Library and other struc-tures via non-paved roads. Expect loose gravel and uneven terrain.

Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those with accessibility require-ments. In all lodging options, if you do not register with a companion, a roommate may be assigned to you during busy periods on the Ranch.

We observe the honor system at Ghost Ranch—while our guest rooms with private and semi-private bathrooms are equipped with key-pad locks—rooms in our communal lodging facilities do not have locks.

The Wheel of Creativity: Taking Your Place in the Adventure of Life

G15S113

Katherine Robertson-Pilling

Do you want to move to the next level of pas-sionate achievement in your life?

Whether you’re just starting out in life, tran-sitioning through loss to a new life, or longing to move from success in one field to another, this course (based on Katherine’s book of the same title) gives you the road map to see the landscape of your life as a creative playground.

This retreat will help explain and explore the 12 stages of the natu-ral process of creating anything, from a busi-ness to a new marriage. Learn to recognize where you are in that process in every aspect of your life. Empower yourself to live deliberately.

Creating Possibilities: Listening for New Directions in Life

G15CDS111 at Casa del Sol

Nina Ross

Traditionally, New Year’s is a time when we make an accounting of where we’ve been and where we are going.

Through active imagi-nation, journaling and artwork we will have the opportunity to listen within to the still small voices for guidance and possible new directions for our lives.

As a group, we will have the opportunity to share our dreams each time we come together. Find support in the group for reaching goals, expand-ing our visions and feel-ing gratefully alive with new ideas.

No prior art experience is necessary, just an openness to explore and experiment.

Creating Spaciousness: A New Year’s Sabbath Retreat

G15S112

Wayne Muller Kelly Wendorf

Sabbatical is a practice honoring the rhythm of light and dark, work and rest, action and contemplation. Shared in many forms and cultures, it honors the necessary wisdom of dormancy. Certain plant species must lay dor-mant in winter to bear fruit in the spring.

Before entering a new year, come and learn about the deep tradition of Sabbath. Experience Sabbath in its many forms through teach-ings, practices, silence and ritual threaded together. Take home simple practices you can apply all year.

Jan Term

Introduction to Silversmithing in the Southwest Tradition

G15A111 | $2,100 | Judith Foster

This is a hands-on course in the basics of silver jewelry making and lapidary. Studio work will be supplemented by demonstrations, discussions, guest instructors and gallery visits. You will leave with multiple pieces of wearable art and a discovery of your own creative potential.

Weaving the Tapestry, Learning the Art

G15A112 | $2,100 | Teresa Maestas

Learning from a master weaver in the Southwest Spanish tradition, you will return home with com-pleted pieces of your own. Field trips to museums and private studios to meet with weavers native to this area will take you into the depths of northern New Mexico through the lens of the tapestries, rugs, horse blankets and sarapes, and the people who weave them.

Micaceous Pottery: The Spirit of Clay

G15A113 | $2,100 | Clarence Cruz

The rich earth of this mysterious and sacred landscape is the starting point for this class—the brilliant geological formations, the earth’s clay, the yucca paintbrush. After thanking the earth and gathering the clay, learn how to prepare it and coil it into pots then fire pots in ways traditional to the pueblo potter. Carry the earth of northern New Mexico back to your homes as micaceous pots.

Before being greeted by the majestic red rocks, cascading mountains, and lake surrounding Ghost Ranch, I felt like I had lost my passion, purpose, desire, excitement, my roman-tic soul, and my artist’s touch. It was at Jan Term at Ghost Ranch that I found that they were all still there, inside of me, waiting to be re-awakened and that I would feel them all again. —Sara Hussein, Guilford College

Sustainability Practices in Action: Agriculture and the Earth

G15C111 | $2,100 | Eric Garretson

What might be more important than learning about how to grow and be nourished by your own food? Discuss the history of food and the many varied methods of farming along with explorations into the ethics of land-use, seed saving, and health and well-being related to the foods you choose to eat. This is a class where you shouldn’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Spend three weeks becoming a better steward of this Earth we call home.

Holistic Medicine, From Earth to Herb: The Art of Well-Being

G15H111 | $2,100 | Camilla Trujillo

How do we connect with the earth, identify its medicinal herbs and plants, harvest them and make them into balms, tinctures and liniments for health and well-being? In preparation for “getting down to the herbs,” you will get to know Mother Earth better by creating your own containers from the micaceous clay found in the canyons nearby. Includes a special guest presentation by Profes-sor Layne Kalbfleisch, neuroscientist from George Mason University, on how these natural medicinal remedios affect the brain and body.

Outdoor Adventures at Ghost Ranch

G15O111 | $2,100 | TBA

For those interested in an introductory course in outdoor learning and adventure, this course offers a variety of activities including hiking, high/low Rope challenge course facilitation, orienteering, archery, horse therapy and riding, snowshoeing and/or cross-country skiing, wilderness survival training and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics. Explore some of the 21,000 acres of Ghost Ranch with field trips exploring other outdoor areas of northern New Mexico. While this class is physically active, no experience is necessary. Why is it that some things are easier for you to do than others? How do play, nature, music and making art influ-ence you in ways that nothing else can?

This combination of science, art, and craft with intentional exer-cises using images and prose will allow you to develop a deep-felt understanding of what is vital to your brain’s health.

The Power of Listening as a Sacred Art

G15CDS31X All Inclusive, Double-Occupancy: Private Bath: $450, Semi-Private Bath: $375

Kay Lindahl

According to St. John of the Cross, listening is God’s first language. In the fast-paced culture we live in, speaking has become our first lan-guage. We spend hours preparing to speak but little time towards lis-tening. This workshop focuses on the power of Sacred Listening–the art of becoming a listen-ing presence. As we open up to listening as a spiritual practice, we find it transforms our relationships, nurtures our inner voice and inspires our spiritual growth.

Getting to “Thrive“ in Ministry

G15S321 All Inclusive, Double-Occupancy: Private Bath: $995, Semi-Private Bath: $795, Communal Bath: $735

Rev. Andrew Black Rev. Jan Gough Rev. Harry Eberts

Am I merely surviving in ministry, waiting for the next move or early re-tirement? Do I need to be revived by the breath of God, or at least a little breeze that might bring relief to daily pressures and struggles? Is it really possible at my age to thrive, and be part of a thriving church? If you have read this far then you might fit the description of countless pastors who still hope to be part of the transformation and renewal of the church . . . in our lifetime!

During this week we intend to model what a church experience might look

like on its better days. We will share our stories and seek wisdom from the Biblical stories (which seem all too familiar to our own stories!), look at various models of ministry, affirm pushback as a positive sign that we are doing our job, and then find relief and empowerment through learning the art of self-differentiation.

Worship will be simple; rest, suste-nance and support will be abundant; and spiritual direction will be offered throughout the week. Our goal is to glimpse again the wonder, mystery and awe of God, the same God who called us once and is renewing us now.

From the Mind and Heart of an American Indian Mystic:

A 3-day special retreat/gathering with Mr. Joseph Rael

It is with great honor that Ghost Ranch receives again the wisdom and presence of Mr. Joseph Rael, especially during the period of the Sacred Fire Ceremony/Sound Peace Chamber Anniversary (April 7). Mr. Rael, during this special gathering, will offer teaching, conversation and ceremony to help open mind, heart and spirit.

Joseph Rael is regarded as one of the great Native American holy men of our time. In 1983, Mr. Rael had the vision to build a Sound Peace Chamber, a kiva-like structure where people of all races might gather to chant and sing for world peace and to purify the earth and oceans. Mr. Rael is the author of a number of books, including Beautiful Painted Arrow.

Fierce Love: Empowering Women to Lead in the 21st Century

G15CDS342 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $725 Semi-Private Bath: $595 Communal Bath: $545 Anita Amstutz Judy Bierbaum Adonna Rometo What does it mean to love God, ourselves, others and life itself fiercely? How can we bring our full selves to the places we live in order to participate in a new dream of shalom?

Women’s gifts and voic-es are needed now more than ever—strength through vulnerability, relationship and col-laboration, compassion and a community vision of shalom and justice for all beings. How can we nourish these within ourselves as women?

Here in the high desert of Ghost Ranch, amidst the fierce beauty and sustenance of the landscape and her inhabitants, we will explore embodied prac-tices such as art, yoga, music, prayer, worship, ritual and times of sacred conversation with our sisters.

Designed for healing and renewal of our bod-ies and souls, refreshing our vision and encour-aging us to fully name and claim whom we are and what we need in order to return to our daily lives and the work at hand.

This is open to all who are being called to lead in ways of Spirit as lov-ers of God, self, neigh-bor, earth—whether clergy, teacher, healing practitioner, therapist, scientist, mother, activist or other.

Following in the footsteps of our Wisdom Sharing Retreat (Oct, 2014) with Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem, and Dr. Chung Hyun Kyung, Ghost Ranch continues its emphasis on the important theme of women’s wisdom and leadership.

Based on the work of author Parker J. Palmer, this Courage & Renewal® retreat explores issues of tran-sition, vocation, life pas-sion, purpose, meaning, aging, direction, and underlying life patterns, to live in alignment with one’s deepest values. In a safe, quiet, nurturing, and confidential envi-ronment, the retreat promotes reflection and clarity, and uses poetry, prose, music, movement and the stunning beauty of the high desert.

Savor daily contempla-tive practices. Enjoy periods of quiet time, journaling and self-reflection, and large and small group discussions. Clearness committees,

a Quaker communal process for individual discernment, is the capstone of the retreat. Off-ranch trips are planned. Exhale deeply and relax at a nearby mineral springs (at an extra fee), enjoy an afternoon of Gregorian chant at Christ in the Desert Monastery and visit the weavers of Medanales to explore local culture. Limit 15.

Participants register for the full series, commit to being present for both weeks, and com-plete a questionnaire about registration.

All Inclusive, Double Occupancy $895 Includes 3 nights double occupancy lodging at Ghost Ranch and one night on the road, all meals (except one dinner on the road), lectures, guides, tour fees, programming and transportation during the excursion.

Archaeologist Martha Yates

Immerse yourself in the Chaco phenom-enon, the mysteries of Chaco Canyon, its ancient astronomi-cal observatories, the Great Kivas of Aztec and Casa Rinconada, the Great Houses of Pueblo Bonito and Kin Kletso and much more.

Begin with a day of introductions at Ghost Ranch and an afternoon to explore its uniqueness and beauty. Then, two days on the road, one day to the ancient ob-servatory of Chimney Rock and Aztec Great House and the next day to Chaco Canyon with the final night at Ghost Ranch for

discussion of the ex-cursion and closure.

Please note: The road into Chaco Canyon is not an all-weather road. In severe weather, which hap-pens occasionally, the road and Chaco Can-yon are inaccessible. If this happens, an alternative destina-tion with archaeologi-cal significance will be arranged.

Also offered June 1-5, (G15SW611), Sept. 24-28, 2015 (G15SW931)and Oct. 5-9, 2015 (G15SW1011).

Just a note to tell you that we loved our trip to Chaco and your incredible guidance. What an inspiration you were with your deep knowledge and wisdom of that culture, your open-mindedness concerning various theories, your honesty in not trying to tie every detail down and your warmth and concern for all of us... .This was a trip that I have wanted to take for many years and it met all expectations and beyond.

GHOST RANCH is a unique combination of natural beauty, paleontology, archaeology, history, geology and art. It is not just the values of each of these separate aspects of Ghost Ranch, but rather the synergy of its beauty, its scientific value, its cultural and historical traditions and its spirituality that make it like no other place in the world.
