    prepaid cellphones -unregistered and anonymous

    on: May 07, 2008, 02:35:22 PM

This article today is rather interesting in that some cellphones are unregistered with telecomsin India will face disconnection unless they re-register them along with photo id.

QuoteOf the 3 million unregistered clients until March this year, 2.7million use Grameenphoneconnections.

To re-register customers must produce a SIM (subscriber identification module) card, twocopies of passport size photo, passport or any photo ID card (like the office ID card or drivinglicence) and the forms and documents given during subscription.

Unregistered mobile phones will face disconnection next month as the country's telecomsregulator yesterday announced there will be no extension of re-registration deadline.

Until yesterday some 3 million customers are yet to re-register their cellphone connectionswith the deadline expiring May 31.

Unregistered mobile phones go off next monthMay 8, 2008http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=35481

Could the telecom regulation in the USA do the same thing and mandate disconnection all in

lieu of putting a name with every cellphone and number? If that would happen here surelythere would be a blackmarket of anonymous cellphones. Some telecoms such as AT&T require your name even to get a prepaid phone without a creditcheck. Companies like Tracfone only ask you your age when you activate the phone.

Saudi Arabia Launches Effort to ID Every Phone

    Reply #1 on: October 13, 2008, 02:34:00 PM

Not Just India, Saudi Arabia now too.

QuoteThe campaign, which was instigated by the Saudi Communications & InformationCommission (CITC), is intended to ensure that each mobile number has a valid identityattached to it.

Trading in pre-paid mobile numbers is common in Saudi, although it is illegal, and

anonymous pre-paid phones have been used by criminals and terrorists to avoid beingidentified by security forces.

    UK - compulsory customer registration

    Reply #3 on: October 19, 2008, 09:00:43 AM

QuoteVodafone is believed to be one of the mobile phone firms now drawing up plans forcompulsory customer registration. Such a system, already used in Europe, would require a

passport or ID to register a phone.

QuoteThis would include compulsory registration of all Britains 72m mobile phones, more

than 40m of which are prepaid. Terrorists and criminals prefer to hide behind the anonymityof prepaid phones, so a communications database needs to include accurate details of prepaidsubscriber details.

Government faces fight from within for spy databaseA Home Office revolt is stalling a plan to store our e-mails and calls but a more sinister onemay take its placeOctober 19, 2008http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article4969361.ece#cid=OTC-RSS&attr=797084

QuoteThink through the ramifications. Every MVNO is going to have a total arse. Youll nolonger be able to walk into huge retailer, Argos, and buy a phone. They simply dont

have the infrastructure to check IDs.

Neither does the likes of Tesco or your average petrol (Gas) station where these

things are being flogged as impulse purchases. None of these retailers are going to want tofaff about with ID recording.

I suppose retailers could insist you purchase with a Switch/Maestro (Bank Card) or

Credit Card that way all purchases are theoretically trackable.

Or who will simply steal registered PAYG handsets to make their calls. Like stealing cars.

Or who will buy unlocked handsets from abroad.

    20th October 2008,http://www.mobileindustryreview.com/2008/10/uks_mobile_phone_register_will_require_passport_to_buy_payg_handset.html

something tells me that Ebay and any other auction website will have legal requirements togather information about the purchaser of a mobile phone.

said.ATS chief Hemant Karkare has written to the customs department to prevent the entry ofunbranded Chinese cellphones, which do not have the International Mobile EquipmentIdentification (IMEI) number, into the city.

With an IMEI number, the phone can be blocked from the network quickly and easily.Earlier, IMEI numbers helped police in tracking several extortionists, killers, bookies, and incases of mobile thefts.

WE are all criminals now...aren't we ? Although I have not changed MY behavior, I amnow a criminal for doing things that were not illegal 20 or 30 years ago. Like riding amotorcycle without a helmet, driving with no seatbelt, driving with no insurance, on, and onand on...

"Hoarding" prepaid cellphones -unregistered and anonymous

    Reply #6 on: November 24, 2008, 01:22:51 PM

Pay cash, and buy a bunch of minutes at the same time. Also, if you do not "ROAM" whenyour phone is in use, it is next to impossible for "BIGBROTHER" to I.D. which tower youare using. Then when you move from one area, switch to one of your other phones. I hope itdoes not get that bad, but "Expect the best, prepare for the worst." If you have bought (one

per week) "too many" cell-phones, they can be bartered. AWTTW (a word to thewise). Shibb.

VERY good point. I'm putting together a "hoarding list" and never thought to putTracfones on it.

I figure if I buy a few extra of things I always use (like cat food and alka selzer) every time Ishop, I'll be in better shape even if it's just for a bad winter (like last winter). Still better ifTSHTF.

actually, maybe. cell towers and the systems they use to run are very close to automatic andnot terribly power-intensive. so, on a cost and maintenance basis, yes. but they would besusceptible to over-arching control by companies that could be pressured to 'close it down fornational security' before the country would dive into the empty swimming pool. so, on acommand and control basis, no. taken together, maybe. not enough information at this pointto say with certainty.

It would depend on how the "S" hit the fan. I think, barring a catastrophe of national size, like an all out nuclear war (which is doubtful in my mind) that most communicationsinfrastructure remains at least partially operational. I see a problem more like thetelecommunications equivalent of a rolling brownout.

Of course, it would depend on the S** and how long it lasted.

I live in an area with growing cell phone use, but the coverage is not complete by any means. If you get off the main highways, you rapidly lose the signal here in rural Wyoming.

More and more people are going to cell phones as their ONLY phone, however, so I supposeit's just a matter of time - if nothing major stops it - that the land line phones will be the rare

ducks and far more expensive!!I'm going to be in a world of hurt then because I absolutely hate cell phones. They are simplytoo small now. I can't dial on them, and I can't hear much on them either!! Oh me...

LoggedBut, in the end, I live and therefore I am. I don't need any other person's permission to live ordefend myself. I don't need anyone's vetting of my intentions or sanity, nor approval for theself defense tool I choose or how I carry it.

VERY good point. I'm putting together a "hoarding list" and never thought to put Tracfoneson it.

Not to be negative, but there's a possible problem with this. One sting in the tail of theTracfone deal is that you can't just load the phone with minutes and put it in a drawerindefinitely. The minutes have to be used up in a few months or you lose them unless you

buy a rather expensive contract, and even that's only good for a year. (I think - never boughtthe contract.)

I think that's pretty standard with all the pre-pay phones. I looked at one a few months ago, just to have for emergencies if I was to travel. I don't remember the minimum number of

minutes (about $15.), but it turned out you must buy the minimum each month in order tokeep the phone activated. Some brands confiscate any unused minutes, but this one "allowed"

you to roll the unused ones over. Since I would never even begin to use all those veryexpensive minutes, there was no point in my getting the phone at all.

Some people I know have replaced their land line phone with this pre-pay thing and so the$15. is cheaper for them than paying the phone company at all, even if they lose part of the

minutes, but it's not for everyone.Logged

telecoms require purchasers of cellphones or SIMcards for fingerprints -Mexico

QuoteTelecoms would be required to ask purchasers of cell phones or phone memory chips fortheir names, addresses and fingerprints, and to turn that information over to investigators ifrequested.

QuoteAt present, unregulated vendors sell phones and chips for cash from streetside stands. It isunclear how such vendors would be made to comply with the new law.the Senate voted to create a registry of cell phone owners to combat kidnappings andextortions in which gangs often use untraceable mobile phones to make ransom demands.
