COO MESSAGEGHMC, in consultation with experts, have identified nearly 40 road

junctions in the city that are selected on basis of the traffic levels

present.

The elevated skyway would join the two crossing points from

the Outer Ring Road to River Musi at Narsingi and at Nagole in

the East. At major juntions in the city, ramps would be provided

facilitating vehicles to join the skyway.

The 11 proposed elevated roads or skyway are likley to be the best

option to manage traffic.

Telangana state’s progress proves again that it is on the fast lane

to technological advancement.

You can learn more regarding these subjects in the coming pages.

K. V. Nagendra Prasad

COO, HITEX

04 Point of View bi-monthly | October 2016 Issue | VOL. 20 www.hitex.co.in 05

In a short span of time, Telangana state has

attracted national attention with its achievements

in development and infrastructure sectors. The

Government has for sure bolstered the confidence

among people of all sections, by scoring noticeable

accomplishments in the recent times.

Best practices are being adopted by the Telangana

government for the road improvement; the

Ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan

project is on a fast track which entails multi-layer

flyovers, skywalks, etc.

Stepping ahead to build an integrated skyway

with multiple levels of flyovers on the Musi River

in Hyderabad and to improve the existing roads at

a cost of around Rs 5000 crores, the government

is optimizing its resources. Explaining his vision

for the Strategic Road Development plan, the Chief

Minister asked companies to come forward with

proposals. Besides, he invited international MNCs

to participate in the infrastructure development of

the State.

It means that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal

Corporation (GHMC) finally gets a positive nod

from the government for this skyway project that

would connect the East and West ORR. In order

to overcome the traffic chaos in the city, the

GHMC has come up with this proposal which

aims at de-congesting traffic in the twin cities.

The Telangana government has taken a cue from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and has

passed a resolution for the construction of a skyway linking the east and west sides of

the Outer Ring Road in Hyderabad. The resolution was unanimously passed by the Great-

er Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) approving the skywalk, which will run from

Nagole to ORR West and at grade radial road from ORR East to Nagole with a ‘retaining

wall’ along the northern bank of the Musi River. The total cost of the project is estimated

to be 5,916 crores.

The skyway will run for a total distance of 41km, out of which 26km will be completed

in the First Phase. Twenty km of the skyway is to be built on the river bed, while the re-

maining 6km would run along the banks of Musi. The skyway has been designed to allow

vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 80km an hour.

The skyway had been proposed under the state government’s Strategic Road Develop-

ment Programme (SRDP). The state government will begin working on various aspects of

the project soon, including feasibility studies, land executions, financing, obtaining clear-

ances, and calling for tenders. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has already asked for

a quick feasibility report on the skyway and the east-west corridor along the Musi.

The GHMC has also sought environmental clearance for the project since it is intended to

be built on the river bed. The application for environmental clearance was presented to

the pollution control board in the second week of April. The government is also exploring

various financial models for funding the cost of the project, including taking loans from

private financial institutions and making repayments on an annuity model.

The skyway will decongest the existing roads and ease traffic from the east towards

the west of the city and vice versa. It is expected to give considerable relief to motorists

along the Inner Ring Road (IRR) and beyond up to GHMC limits in general and existing

parallel road networks. It expects to make travel easier particularly for commuters trav-

eling along Nagole ring road, Moosarambagh, Chaderghat, MGBS, Afzalgunj, Puranapul,

Attapur ring road till it reaches the ORR at Narsingi. It will not only reduce travel costs

and time but will also enhance public safety and improve the efficiency of public trans-

portation.
