Deliveries Commenced In 1949 to USAF, US Navy and US Coast Guard, the type being used all over the world for air sea Rescue, and later Air Sea Warfare role with search radar, retractable magnetic-anomaly detection boom,

searchlight, sonobuoy launchers, plus a range of torpedoes and depth charges. Production ended in May 1961. Albatrosses were used by the armed forces of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and Venezuala. Numerous type designations were used by USAF, US Navy and US Coast Guard to indicate different roles, and those aircraft subsequently modifed by Grumman with lengthened wing span. In military service they were referred to as “short wing” and “long wing”. In 1962 the US adopted a standard inter-service type designation system. Albatross designations were in the SA-16, HU-16, PF-, U-16, UF- series. Ten were ordered by Canada as CSR-110. All models were powered by variants of the 1,400hp Wright R-1820 radial engine. Although no commercial models of the Albatross were designed, former military models were flown as civil aircraft from 1955 when Trans Oceanic Airways used three to replace Catalinas on inter-island services in the US Trust Territory of Micronesia, in the central Pacific. From the 1970s US military disposals Albatross models were civil registered in USA in the restricted category for a variety of civil operations, as well as privately owned warbirds. Grumman St Augustine Corporation in Florida marketed a civil conversion which was FAA Part 25 Transport Category approved for commercial use, with seating for 28 passengers. These reconditioned aircraft, with the airframe brought back to zero-time, were designated G-111 Albatross, and marketed at the time under the name Caribbean. (G-111 had earlier been used in the 1950s as a Grumman in-house designation for the long wing conversions for USAF, rebuild numbers 00B to 88B). These commercial rebuilds were carried out by Grumman at Stuart FL and St Augustine FL between late 1970s to mid 1980s. FAA certified a total of 13 aircraft as G-111, but two later rebuilds for the Royal Malaysian Air Force were to a similar standard, one of these being fitted with an executive cabin for the Prime Minister. In anticipation of a larger civil market, Grumman St Augustine Corporation had purchased a total of 57 disposals Albatross models, many of which never left the contractor storage yards on the perimeter of Davis Mothan AFB in Arizona. Some were damaged in desert storms, and the remainder sold to Jim Robinson, who formed Island Flying Boats at Opa Locka Airport, Miami to market them, advertising an inventory of 33 Albatrosses in 1988.
