Letter of thanks from Pam Briggs“I have been overwhelmed by the support, cards, flowers and caring given to me by clubwomen not only in Oregon, but throughout the GFWC organization as I have struggled to deal with the sudden and unexpected death of my husband in October. It has been a tremendous help in dealing with things during this very difficult time. I continue to have good days and not so good days, which I am sure will continue for some time and taking care of all the related tasks continues to occupy much of my time. Your continued support and prayers have meant so much to me. You are all very special and I appreciated everything you have done.Thank YouPam Briggs”

If your club or a member of your club received an engraved tray or plaque, in 2016, please bring it to the OFWC Board of Directors meeting. If you cannot bring it to the meeting, please make arrangements to get it to me by February 28, 2017.******************************************************************************Remember, when completing your Club Reports, my President’s project is LITERACY.Your club can report on any type of project connected to literacy, e.g. donating books to library or shelters, donating books to Mill City, reading to children at the library or other venue. Your club does not have to be concentrating on my pet project, Books on Buses.******************************************************************************

This president attended the WSRC in Salt Lake City, Utah in September 2016. It was an informative and fun meeting. Our GFWC International President, Sheila Shea & President Elect, Mary Ellen Brock, were in attendance. We heard speakers from the Utah Coalition

Against Sexual Assault & the “Everytown for Gun Safety” organization. We had a number of excellent workshops: Membership, Leadership, Legislation and Public Policy, Public Issues and Fundraising. Historian & WHRC Western Region chairman told us about the inclusion of history for WHRC at headquarters. Of course, the fun part of the meeting is always getting together with other members from across the Western Region. Establishing new friendships and renewing old friendships. As I have stated before, this is the reason for going to these meetings and I enjoy them tremendously. The 2017 WSR conference will be held in Helena, Montana, Sept. 7-11, 2017. Try to attend, it is well worth your time. I have raffle tickets work $200.00 for the Montana Conference. Tickets are $10.00 ea. Or 3/$20.00. Winner will be drawn at GFWC Convention in June – you need not be in attendance to win.

May 18-21, 2017 – OFWC Convention – Redmond, Oregon********************************************************************************CLUB NEWSBeaverton Woman’s Club has had an active Fall season in 2016. In October we were lucky to get early access to the Beaverton Arts Mix art show. Club members served a ham and turkey dinner to the HomePlate youth program later that month. HomePlate is an assistance program for homeless youth in Washington County. Allison Belisle hosted a Halloween Bunco party in her home to aid the Mill City Library rebuilding project. Money from this even will be used to purchase books from the Nature Generation/Green Earth books GFWC program partner. In November, our club headed to the streets for the first of our quarterly Adopt-A-Street clean up days. The first of many meetings was held to kick off the 2017 Girlfriend’s Tea organization. It was decided that the theme will be Paris-Ooh La La! And it will help fund our Club’s scholarship to a deserving single mother attending Portland Community College. At our December club Banquet/meeting, club members assembled 20 stockings for the guests and staff of Monika’s House – Washington County’s domestic Violence safe house. Before the new year, we will be hand delivering donation checks to 8 deserving charities in the Beaverton/Washington County area. On a sad note, On Dec. 19th we

got the news of the passing of our beloved charter club member, Mrs. Lu Walker. An original member of the Beaverton Junior club since 1962, Lu was a driving force who featured prominently in many of the Beaverton Woman’s Club early projects – including the opening of the Cedar Mill Library, the lobbying for kindergarten in the Beaverton School District and the scholarship program with the OHSU Primate Center. Her attendance at our meetings was very meaningful to our club members. She will be missed, but never forgotten. Vicki Takata – President

The GFWC Silverton Zenith Woman’s Club has been very busy sponsoring the Silverton Tree of Giving. Families apply in November and mush show need by income and residency. (We had 363 children qualify). Then we start contacting churches and stores that would be willing to set up a tree with an individual tag for each child. Our whole town participates in this project. Our local fire department collects toys from the community and from Les Schwab tires. We are even the recipient of some toys from the KGW toy drive. Items for teens are seldom included in these toy drives, so the Zenith women shop for 140 teens all year. Any tags that are not taken or returned are personally shopped for by the Zenith member, which approximately 40 children this year. Generally we bring in about $5,000.00 in donations and the Zenith club brings in $1,200.00 to pay for this project. This year were recipients of a $1,000.00 grant to buy shoes for the kids. We are both pleased and proud to be such a vital part of our community.Wanda Daimler – President

Portland Woman’s Club members have a passion for focusing on Foster children, this year we have made contact with Building Blocks 4 Kids and found that they have a clothes boutique that needs help. The collect used jeans and new clothes for children. They also provide new pillows for these pillows need cases. The Portland Woman’s Club made 200 pillowcases and donated them. They volunteer for the USO golf tournament. They rented a booth at the “Good in the Hood’ event in North Portland for a membership drive and many women stopped by and signed up to be invited to our meetings. Information about the club will be handed out this year at the Woman’s Expo. “Just keep trying” is our motto.Elsie Dustin - President

Thanks to the many fabulous donations and all of our friends, members from other clubs and Chamber, our auction on October 30 was a huge success. We had over 20 new bidders and made over $3,000.00 more than last year. In November we asked our members to bring in stamped Christmas cards to give to our veterans in the VA and their Rehab facility in Vancouver. We sent 256 cards to our infirmed friends to send to their family and friends. We also supplied H.O.P.E. food pantry with 148 pounds of Thanksgiving food.

In December we decorated our room in the Stevens-Crawford house again for the historic open house event. At our meeting we asked the ladies to bring in gifts for the Pioneer Pantry kids. We gave them 12 hats, 21pairs of gloves, 6 scarves,19 pairs of sock, and $260 gift cards to fast food or coffee houses. Also, it is our tradition to remember “Man’s Best Friend” and bring in dry dog food and clean blankets to take to Clackamas Dog Services. This year we took them 125# of dry food, 15# of treats, as well as towels and blankets. We also installed 4 new members. Welcome Robin May, Christy Palmer, Shery Phillips, and Grace Humberston. In the upcoming months we will feature speakers on “Sheltering our Neighbors”, Human Trafficking and the Children’s Center. In April we will have our anniversary tea where we celebrate 114 years as a Club. In January we will be installing 4 more ladies. Pamela Ooten, Vicki Calcagno, Barbara Renken and Nancy Ide. In February we should have 3 more if they get their third meeting in. Also in January we will be moving our meeting back to the Rivershore as we have almost outgrown the maximum capacity at the Wild Hare. We hope you all had a Wonderful Christmas and have a Happy and Prosperous New Year in all you do.Jerri Adams – President

I am still searching for a State Fundraising Chairman. This is an important job, without funds we cannot do the State job. I have a volunteer who would be a co-chair with someone. Please ask your fellow club members if they can step forward and help me out.Our 2018 OFWC Convention will be held May 18 – 21, 2018 at the Comfort Suites in Redmond, Oregon. Our GFWC guest will be President Elect, Mary Ellen Brock. GFWC of Central Oregon and the GFWC of Central Oregon Juniorettes will be our host clubs. I have met with the management of the Comfort Suites and they are very pleased that we have chosen their site for our upcoming convention. Both Central Oregon clubs are working hard to make this convention one to remember. Please consider attending. There are so many benefits from attending our State convention. Getting to know and be with your fellow club members is probably the best benefit. We are a team, and we have to work & play as a team.

The GFWC International Convention will be held June 23-26, 2017 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, Ca. This is an excellent opportunity to attend a GFWC Convention since it is being held in our “back yard”. More information will be coming to you in the very near future, but now is the time to start planning on attending.

Public Policy and Legislation

Are you familiar the Legislative Action Center? LAC is a strong part of GFWC’s website that gives clubwomen updates on current issues and active bills being legislated in Congress which are germane to GFWC resolutions and helps you to find your elected officials.

There is a very simple website procedure to sign up to receive Legislative Action Alerts. By opting in, you will receive information on the pending bill, a pre-written letter which will be automatically sent to your respective legislators if you choose to support the bill.

Current legislation includes:

Protecting Our Infants Act 2015 No Child Left Behind Women Airforce Pilot Arlington Restoration Act 2016 Support Services for Disabled Veterans Justice for Victims of Trafficking

As well as:

Transportation Safety Combating Zika (now in 30 States) Combatting Opiod Drugs Equal Pay for Equal Work Global Vaccine with Shot@Life Domestic Violence and Campus Assault

You have a voice. Let it be heard. When united as GFWC members, legislators pay close attention to “grassroots” point of view. Choose to make a difference.

HOME LIFE DEPT. INFORMATION

BEAT THE FLU BUG: Get Your shot…The seasonal flu vaccination is still recommended for anyone six months and older, especially for those at higher risk from flu complications: young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses. Because children under six months old cannot receive a flu vaccination, it is important that family members and caretakers be protected against the flu. While vaccination is the best protection, basic infection control measures can also reduce the spread of flu. These measures include covering your mouth when coughing and sneezing, staying at home when you or your children are sick, and washing your hands frequently. Clubwomen can contact their local health care facilities for more information. Another outstanding source for this and similar health information is the CDC website at www.cdc.gov. Then place the information items in places that have many visitors such as the library, the grocery store or the bank.
