GFE/IDEAS Web Series

“The low hanging fruit of money saving

energy efficiency tips and technologies

whipped into in an easy to digest, time

saving video smoothie”

Page 2: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

GFE/IDEAS Web seriesGoals:• Provide a series of videos, short , easy to

watch, packed with information, and appealing enough to share and generate interest.

• Each needs to provide REAL solutions to the average person to help them find ways to reduce their dependence on oil, electricity and help the environment.

• Need a dedicated team to come up with interesting content, factual information, filming talent, and on screen talent.

• A stepping stone to a full television series on either a major network, or a Discovery Communications channel, such as Planet Green

• Discuss issues that are important, and can make a big difference, but that seem to not be getting enough attention and discussion

• We will basically be a research and reporting service to the consumer and hopefully gain the attention of business and government at the same time for being a think tank that is providing real solutions.

• Ultimate goal is to make a difference in reducing dependence on foreign oil, helping the environment, and boosting the US economy.

Page 3: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Why a Web and/or TV Series?

• The premise works on the fact that the technologies, vehicles, and advancements are in fact really interesting $h1t!

• There are:• Electric Tesla’s that do 0-60 faster than

any other road car out there• Nano technologies and Carbon fiber• Advanced Biofuels• Renewable energy• “Filling up” for the equivalent of 25 cents

a gallon on electricity• Not having to pay utility bills any more

because of rooftop solar and geothermal• Electric motorcycles that can drive for less

than a penny a mile• And many, many more• Because most people don’t want to learn.

But they do want to be entertained. (Casey Anthony Weiner)

• Key point is to take the “interesting” side of green technology, and share it!!

Page 4: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 1Bright Idea

• Easiest to do with the biggest benefit• Energy payback in 3-6 months (so even if renting, it makes sense

to do right away. You can always take with you when you leave.• Contains less mercury than an incandescent produces from the

extra electricity used from coal fired plants (shot of Stanton coal fired power plant on Alafaya)

• You can recycle them at home depot (shot at home depot recycling a bulb

• Do the energy calculation with 12 lamps in a powerstrip plugged into a kill-a-watt meter. 1st incandescent, then CFL’s. 720 watts vs 144 watts.

• save $5-$10 a year per bulb• In Florida it is more to off set air conditioning use 10 months of

the year. Double that for a 14 SEER AC to remove that heat. Shoot a 100w bulb with a temperature gun

• Porch lights or anything over 4 hours a day? Essential!! If you can only do one, do the light that’s on the most!

• Oh and CFL’s last over 4 years on average, versus 6 months for Incandescents

• So how much total on 12 bulbs which cost $20 to buy? – will save $12 a year on lightbulbs, $100 a year in lighting electricity and $150 on additional air conditioning. So in 4 years that’s over a thousand dollars!!

• Over $20 a month. They pay for themselves the first month!!• What can I do with my old incandescents before they burn out?

Save them. Use them in Attics and closets that get turned on less than an hour a month.

• Australia has made incandescent bulbs illegal, and America will too by 2014!

• Explain that Radioactive coal ash may be leaking into Orange County drinking water. Each bulb you change saves some coal ash from making it into this pile (at the site in eastern orange county. The #1 most polluting coal plant in the US according to EPA data. (Sue Sturgis report of Southern Studies)

Page 5: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 2Electric Car Smackdown

• Explain the difference between the different types of electric cars on the market right now.

• Compare price• Compare Range• Compare benefits/limitations of

each• Volt vs. Leaf• Which is better? It depends on

your lifestyle. Explain which is better for each.

• Single car family? Volt.• Dual car family? Leaf• Discuss charging options• Do photoshoot with the hosts with

both cars in a good background setting. Shots from shoot will be stills to promote show.

Page 6: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 3Diesel Comparison

• What is the difference between gasoline and diesel?• Compare similar years VW Jetta’s • Have them both fill up and drive to the beach to surf• Top off before trip and top off when get back• But fill the TDI with B100 but don’t show till later• Compare results to original window stickers• And compare cost.• Why is a diesel more efficient?

Page 7: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 4“I want a car that is good for the environment and

doesn’t use any foreign oil. What can I do?”

• You can go electric, but some can’t afford a new car yet.

• What are other inexpensive options to get started

• B100 biodiesel!• What do I need?• A diesel car, and a local biodiesel

pump.• Test 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI

Page 8: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 5Veggie Ride

• Have host get a car and do conversion herself.

• Then have her talk to restaurant owners and get them to save oil for her in the 5 gal containers.

• Watch her pour it in and drive!• Go to restaurant with all her

friends in the car and eating there.• Show that if she can do it, so can

everyone!!!

Page 9: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 6How to improve the MPG

on your current car• Side by side tests done to find

what works and what doesn’t• Compare effort or cost to benefit

and mpg gain.• Rate the “lowest hanging fruit” in

order, so if someone only does a few things, they know where to begin

• Make it scientific, and coherent to understand, yet fun and upbeat. Enthusiasm about saving money at the pump needs to be the focus and create excitement.

• Discuss the additional benefits besides saving money, such as the environment, dependence on oil and the economy.

• Special guest Wayne Gerdes

Page 10: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 7Electric Nautique

• Get some pro wakeboarder, wakeskater friends together on Lake Jessamine

• Get some great shots of tricks until battery dies

• While charging go over specs, do interviews

• Have them compare it to a Gas boat. Pro’s and Cons

• Go over how it works, voltage, amp hours, total watts

• Have a BBQ then go out an do some more

• Find out voltage and add Lead Acid deep cycles as “fat sacks” to extend range. This can be an on the spot problem solving idea that we actually plan out ahead of time.

• Greg Maloon – Vice President product development Nautique.

• LTS Marine – Michel Sousy

Page 11: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 81 Week Scooter Challenge• Hosts: Nate Flynn and Kristine

Gagnier• Can a scooter solve all your needs?• Do you really need your car?• 1 week challenge.• If you have to drive the car, find

out why and film it.• Can a scooter pay for itself in

under a year? You bet!

• 2nd scooter challenge – race a car to do a series of obstacles, grocery shop, drive to work, cash check at bank, busy mall, the “car” can’t find parking, lol!!

• Advantage of scooter, can park right up front everywhere. Plenty of underseat storage!!

Page 12: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 9Truck/SUV Hybrids

• People need trucks for towing• Some people need to carry 7

passengers• The General Motors Hybrid

platform raises fuel economy from 12/18 to 20/23!! The biggest percentage of any hybrid out there!!

• Potential to save $2500 a year in fuel or $10,000 in 4 years!!

• Extra cost new is only $3500!!• A no brainer!!!• 5 models: 3 SUV, 2 trucks• Escalade, Tahoe, Yukon, Silverado,

GMC Sierra.• Discuss features that allow a 70%

increase in city and a 30% increase in highway mileage!!!

• It would take 5 Altima Hybrids to do the same thing

Page 13: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 10Peak Power and Solar

• How a simple solution can be a win, win situation!

• All a consumer really needs to run when not home is the refrigerator, and maybe the DVR.

• Power consumption peaks at 6 pm and is least at 4 am

• Peak power costs 3 times as much as off peak power to produce

• Give the consumer a chance to shift their usage to off peak, and pass along savings to them

• A small solar/battery backup system can provide power to a fridge for 10 hours while the homeowner is gone

• Peak power plans! I’ve been on it for 2 years! It works!!!

Page 14: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 11The Battery

• What is a battery?• My car won’t start. How to tell if

it’s the battery• The $5 voltmeter, something every

home should have• Types of batteries, Pb, Lion, NiMh• Deepcycle vs Starting• Solar and batteries• Electric cars and batteries• Laptops, cell phones and batteries• Fast charging vs. slow charging• History of batteries• Future of batteries• The future smart grid and electric

vehicle batteries• Energy vs Power• Lifespan and how to increase it• Recycling

Page 15: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 12Why is MPG important?

• Environment• Economy• Dependence on foreign oil• Most important to the consumer

though….price.• Gas has risen from under a dollar a

gallon in 1999 to over $4.00 this year. That’s a 12 percent increase per year. Following that pattern, although gas may not stay there, it is possible we will see spikes in the $10 a gallon range this decade.

• Why do gas prices rise? Supply and Demand, and there really being no other alternative. If gas went to $16 a gallon by 2016, what would you do?

• With an ever tight growing market globally, supply disruptions from terrorism will cause unbelievable price spikes overnight.

• Interview in DC with the EIA

Page 16: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 13Motorcycle MPG Tests

• What are the least expensive motorcycles someone could purchase to save money on gas?

• How long would it take to “pay for” the motorcycle?

• Plus then you still “own” a motorcycle. So for motorcycles that are more than 10-15 years old, depreciation has already happened, payback is immediate, right?

• Do a real world mpg test on some common motorcycles, and the best mpg ones.

• Caption contest • Do ninja 250 R vs CBR250R test!

Page 17: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 14Fiat Eco:Drive Challenge

• Get like 10 “contestants” to all drive a set course.

• Each has a flash drive and records their trip (along with every gram of CO2 released and every gram of fuel used)

• Upload results, get recommendations from the specific tutorial which analyzes the way you drive, and gives suggestions how to drive better

• Then do the course again• Award for:• 1) Best Initial Driver• 2) Most improved• 3) Lowest overall CO2 driver

Page 18: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 15Brammo Enertia

gas at all?• Groceries, work, play, store, etc…• Can you find a place to plug in

easily?• Do you run out of charge?

Page 19: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 16The Power of Television

• Short episode 90 sec to 2 min• How much power does a TV use? • Tube, Plasma, LCD, LED, which is

better?• Can upgrading to an energy efficient

LED TV actually pay for itself?• LED TV’s produce 150 to 200 watts

less heat that your AC has to remove from the house! A double whammy of inefficient TV’s! Especially in Florida!!

• Sure! Especially if anyone out there is a “TV Sleeper” lol you know who you are!

• Compare some older TV’s compared to the most efficient TV’s today as far as standby power and running power.

• Instant on? A no-no• Backlighting! Can save 50% right

there!!• Exchange 1 large TV for new house for

short ad for tv manufacturer following video

Page 20: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 17Can a Single Car Battery

Power Your Home?• Yes it can! But for how long?• A long time if you know what items use the most

energy. • Why? So in a power outage, or thunderstorm, you

can still have power.• Test the items in a home and see how much power

they use. • Both power and daily energy.• Show how long items can run off 1 deepcycle

battery.• Fridge, TV, Computer, Lights etc.• Major Appliances like AC, water heater, microwave,

washer/dryer• Break down a power bill into a pie chart by

appliance• Show how long you would have to pedal a

generator bike to power an item for 1 minute, run inverter to run an item for 1 minute, then have the model pedal the bike generator to recharge what was used. Start small then start using the bigger power items. For instance, she will have to bike for 30 minutes to run the air conditioner for 1 minute. Bike for only 10 seconds to power a CFL for 1 minute. Bike for 45 seconds to power an incandescent for a minute etc.

• Test battery voltage before/after to determine recharge amount.

• Teaser – Next episode we’ll show you how to build a generator bike and power your home!

Page 21: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 18Chillin’

• Focus on Air Conditioning• Least efficient time to use AC?

When it’s hottest out. i.e. 4-6 PM• AC vs. Ceiling fan use. Could run a

ceiling fan all day and use less energy than the AC for 15 min.

• Yet Ceiling fan can make you feel 6 degrees cooler. An AC running from 1-7 pm will not lower temp by 6 degrees.

• Well insulated house? Cool from 3-7 AM

• SEER ratings. What does this mean for you. How old is the AC

• Needs repair? Is it 20 years old or more? Replace It!

• Unused rooms? Shut the vents• Changing the filter.• Explore other ways to stay cool

and save money and energy!

Page 22: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 19Bikes Save CO2

• Join with IDEAS to help promote the benefits of biking. But add a twist….Electric bikes!

• Get everyone on an electric bike. Can use human power of 250 watts and add to that 250 watts of electric to go twice as far and twice as fast as you can by pedaling.

• Make it fun, show them going pretty far in a rather short period of time. Like 20 miles in less than an hour.

Page 23: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 20Washing and Drying our way to

a Green Planet• Episode will focus on ways to save

energy washing and drying clothes• Start with the most eco friendly Energy

Star horizontal washer and dryer.• Always use cold water unless clothes

soaked in oil or grease.• Do full loads• Use eco settings on dryer, or air dry• Vent dryer inside in winter• Wear outside clothes like pants and

sweatshirts more than once if not dirty.• Research more ways and discuss them• Gas vs Electric dryer.• Do dryer loads back to back• Clean lint filter• Compare energy usage of new units on

the market compared to old ones. Use a kill-a-watt meter.

Page 24: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 21How to Keep Food Cool on

a Warming Planet• Episode focusing on Refrigerators• The only essential item that must

run during a peak power period• The more efficient, the less peak

power it will use.• Keep fridge full so less warm air

enters. Test the myth.• Again use the Kill-A-Watt to do

side by side tests• Old fridges can use 3 times as

much energy as new eco fridges. Test side by side!!

Page 25: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 22The Micro Car Crew

• Test best micro cars on the market• MPG• Price• Focus on advantages:• City parking • (can perpendicular park!!)• Garage parking• Fun factor! Many convertible!• Can you fit 4 micro’s in a 2 car

small cars like this could do.• Obstacle course• The “out of gas” ¼ mile car push

race.

Page 26: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 23The Hybrid Future

• Test the best hybrids• Compare cost • Compare mpg• Compare other features• Vote best based on mpg• Vote best based on price• Vote on which was most fun to

drive

Page 27: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 24The Economic MPG crewCars that will pay you to

drive a new car!!!• New cars under $15,000• That also get 35 mpg or better• Test against each other and which

we like best and why• Everyone votes separate so we can

all vote different (perhaps watch can win, maybe we all vote for the same one)

• With a combined trade in value/down payment of $5000 a 5 year loan would be $166 a month and save over $200 a month in fuel!!!! What??? Why aren’t more people doing this!!!!

• Key winners: SUV/Truck owners who bought one while gas was cheap and are now suffering. And those who drive 15-20 miles or more each way to work.

• In Raleigh/Durham, it is not unusual for drivers to drive 30 miles each way to work.

Page 28: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 25The ACEEE top 10

Greenest Cars in America • Revisit the cars we’ve already

tested. • Just test the ones that we haven’t

seen yet. Hopefully can arrange the order of the episodes so that we have 4 or 5 new cars to test and no more.

Page 29: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 26Watt does it mean?

• Explain how electricity is measured on your power bill

• Very simple watts X hours = kWh• A watt = 1 volt X 1 amp• Explain a volt• Explain an amp• Build a lemon battery• Connect a few in series, and a few

in parallel to explain how volts and amps can be added. Light a few LED’s

• Do the coolest experiments to get people excited and cut it down to as fast moving as possible and the best scenes

Page 30: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 27History of Energy and

Prices in the US • 1970 was an low in prices. Excess

supply, low demand, low speculation

• 3 fold rise from 1970 to 1980• Fairly flat from 1982-1998• From 1999 to today, another rise

in electricity and oil and energy prices

• Discuss technology• Discuss price per average income

and why this is going to get higher and energy efficiency is so important today.

Page 31: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 28Water Heaters:

Burning up Your Wallet? Yes.

• Right away – turn your water heater down to 120 degrees, especially if summer time

• Going on vacation or away for the weekend? Turn it to the vacation setting

• How much does a water heater really cost a month to run? How much a year?

• How much does it save turning it down 25 degrees? In a year?

• How to use less?• Wash on cold water• Low flow shower heads• Add a solar preheater!• Water heater insulation (in cold climates)• Make a game: Water heater energy is

measured for one week before hand at 4 hosts houses.

• Challenge, who can reduce it the most using the tips here.

• Winner gets a luxury low flow shower head, and everyone gets eco detergent that says cold wash special detergent!

Page 32: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 29Solar Hot Water

• Join in on an install with Jonathan Winfrey and Dioko on a Solar Thermal installation.

• Solar thermal is more efficient than a photovoltaic setup by a factor of 3-4 as far as efficiency. Especially in Florida.

• Florida freezing is not an issue, so dual system coolants are not necessary (reducing cost)

• Natural gas is more efficient than electrical resistance heating, yet most Florida homes don’t have a natural gas water heater, meaning they have the biggest opportunity for payback for 3 reasons:

• 1) It’s warmer and more sun• 2) no freezing• 3) offset electricity vs. nat gas• Stoked about this project!! Trade for an at

cost discount on a solar thermal on Lake Jessamine if we do the install??

• Calculate payback time by monitoring the true cost of an electric hot water heater system.

• If good do at the Kissimmee house as well!!

• Determine tax credits also!

Page 33: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 30Carbon Neutral trip to the

Nations Capital• No….not Powershift. (This time)• This trip will be with 4 GFE/IDEAS Activists to meet

with congressmen working on Green legislation, government agencies that deal with energy or the environment, and meet with leaders of the as many of the organizations we can who focus on these issues and have headquarters in Washington, D.C. - Some we may try to meet with are:

McCreary• Goal to build an inexpensive

bicycle powered generator• Want to run sewing machines and

blenders in areas where there is no power infrastructure

• Deep Cycle Battery• Inverter• Possibly a solar panel to charge the

battery with a charge controller• Goal of this is to build the kit, but

also film the brainstorming and teamwork to tell a story on video! This is a great event that will bring people and viewers together to understand the cause.

• Film! Film! Film!!!

Page 35: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 32

Tires• Focus this episode just on tires!• Low tire pressure vs. standard tire

pressure on door• Tire pressure on door compared to

max on sidewall• Over inflating? Does it help mpg at

all? What are the dangers?• How much pressure does a tire lose

each month?• How to check tire pressure (i.e. cold

un driven for 24 hours)• Nitrogen filled?• High mpg tires like Good Year fuel

max• All season vs. summer. Why you

should never get all season for mpg• Bigger wheels and plus one low

profile tires better for fuel economy?• Get host to figure out how to do the

tire changes themselves. (will be exciting to watch)

• That’s it. An episode just about tires!

Page 36: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 33

Speed!• How much does speed really

matter for fuel economy? A ton! And it is more important the more unaerodynamic the vehicle is.

• Test a super low Cd (Coefficient of Drag car)

• Test a huge behemoth SUV (Excursion) – Got an mpg gauge

• Test the motorcycle• Do accurate fuel tests at 15 mph,

25 mpg, 35 mph, 45, mph, 55 mph, 65 mph, 75 mph, and 85 mph

• Use cruise control to keep speed constant

• Might need to do this at WDW speedway

• After tests are over, plot the data and discuss the results to come up with a conclusion.

Page 37: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 34

Windows or AC?• Let’s put this issue to rest once and

for all!• At speeds over 45 mph it’s

generally better to use the AC right?

• Test it!• Also what settings are best for the

AC for MPG?• How much exactly does using the

AC really hurt your gas mileage?• Is Max cold the most efficient and

turn it off 50% of the time?• Does setting the temp halfway just

mix heat into the car making it super wasteful?

• How to keep a car cooler? Tint, stick on tint, window shades

• Anything else? Solar powered exhaust fan while parked?

Page 38: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 35

Drafting• Ok, so gas prices have gone sky

high, and you have got to get across country to see grandma who is sick. You are almost broke and don’t know if you will make it.

• Will drafting behind a truck help? • And if so how do you do it?• Test drafting at 55 mph, 65 mph and

75 mph• Test following at 3 second interval, 2

second interval, 1 second interval, ½ second interval.

• Do in a huge SUV, and in a Prius or super aerodynamic car.

• Meet a trucker at a truck stop. Have a girl on a walkie talkie talk to us from in the truck to alert us if they might stop.

• I think a trucker will enjoy the female company for a few dozen miles while we perform our fuel economy test, don’t you?

Page 39: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 36

Idling – Zero mpg!• How much fuel is wasted idling?• How much fuel is wasted in traffic

jams because cars don’t have auto start-stop technology?

• How much gets used an hour?• Do cars need to idle to warm up?• How about in winter?• Should I shut my car off when waiting

at a drive thru?• Advantages of hybrids• Auto Start Stop technology that has

50% of cars in europe• Why not in the US? Because the

current EPA test doesn’t give any benefit to cars which save fuel by not wasting gas idling.

• Someone said it takes more fuel to restart a car than if it just kept running? Myth! False! Prove it!!!

• Idle for 10 minutes, then start for 30 sec, off 30 sec, start 30 sec, off 30 sec for 10 minutes, and then compare.

Page 40: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 37

Weight Around for Nothin’• This one can be quick and easy• Test how much fuel economy

drops by adding 1000 pounds to a car. This can be people, weights, bottles of water, concrete bags, whatever!

• Figure out how much you can save in 4 years if you can remove 100 pounds from your car.

• Haha, saving gas might be that extra incentive to lose a few pounds!

Page 41: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Mini MPG SeriesEpisode 38

Driving like a hypermiler• Watch wayne gerdes drive• But objective to learn to anticipate

stops and start to back off the gas early

• Slow rolling stops save inertia

Page 42: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 391 MPG by adding a solar

panel to a gas car?• Let’s test it and find out!• Goal is to keep the alternator from

kicking on at all• Solar panels charge to 14.9 Volts• Alternator won’t kick on till 13.8• Perfect test! Can’t wait!

Page 43: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 40Congressional Proposals

Faster to save fuel!• Can we create incentives for people to

buy fuel efficient cars by letting them drive faster?

• What???? How does this work?• Any car that can get 40 mpg at 75

mph is allowed a 5 mph grace on the speed limit.

• Why do this? To get people out of big trucks and into smaller more fuel efficient cars.

• People like to go fast, people will choose faster if they can have it

• A small light weight car is safer at 5 mph over what a big SUV is.

• Since people will want to go faster, they will buy a car that qualifies.

• If the motorcycle can get 50 mpg at 80 mph it is allowed a 10 mph grace. This is safer for the motorcycle anyway.

• This will be a controversial topic, but that will also create interest and discussion in watching it.

Page 44: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 41Getting Your Car Drunk

• What is Ethanol?• What is E85?• I’ve heard mixed things, is it good

or not?• What’s the real deal?• What are the subsidies? • How much does a gallon of corn

ethanol really cost?• What is cellulosic ethanol?• Can we visit a lab where they show

us what it is, how it’s made, and let us take it outside and pour it in our Flex Fuel vehicle to see it work?

• Why is it so important that our cars can run on a variety of fuels instead of only one?

• Can we make our own? We can drink the mistakes?

Page 45: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 42Dual fuel

• Get an old Bi-Fuel vehicle

• Can run on both gasoline and CNG

• Or get a Honda Civic GX to test from a local dealer

Episode 50Weatherizing your Home• When you turn off your AC, does

your house keep it’s cool for a few hours?

• Or does it feel like it starts to get hot after just a few minutes?

• If it does, your home is wasting energy, and fast.

• We will explore the methods of weatherizing a home and which have the biggest payback.

• Explore FLIR energy audits• Energy efficient windows versus

old style crank single pane windows

• Attic insulation• South and west side overhangs

and awnings, and planted trees• Door and window seals• Attic vents and solar fans

power: Plains, coast, lakes, mid-west corridor, etc.• Do a self install at the Lake Jessamine house. Plenty of wind

off the lake for sure!

Page 56: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 53Let’s Talk Solar!

• Solar panels can pay for themselves in 3-8 years, why aren’t the more in use?

• Federal and state tax credits up to 70% off photovoltaic systems!

• Rooftop solar keeps direct sun off your physical roof, lowering the amount of heat your air conditioner has to work

• Can provide power security in the event of outages.

• Can sell back to the grid it times of peak use to actually make money

• Do an install and determine costs, payback times and how it works.

• Perhaps work with Dicor solar on this project.

Page 57: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Episode 54Geothermal

Heating and Cooling• The most efficient method of

heating and cooling.• Most systems pay for themselves

in 2-8 years, with the systems close to a body of water having the least installation cost and also the biggest gains.

• Talk about the types of systems and how they are done

• Get a geothermal heat pump manufacturer to give a discount on a system we will install and feature on an episode.

• After it is running show the watts used with this system compared to another home and calculate the monthly savings

• Go over energy tax credits and incentives by utilities and the government.

Page 58: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Recap• If we view this as a whole, it may

seem overwhelming• Plan: Let’s start with just one. CFL

lighting. Let’s make it the best we can, and then see how we feel about moving forward.

• If done well it will get shared, blogged, and talked about. Then the goal is to make the next one even better.

• If we keep that mentality, this project will make a huge difference with a lot of people and continue to grow

Page 59: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

• Specifically vehicles that are interesting, offer alternative energy, or superior gas mileage.• These will be vehicles we will like to test and feature in specific episodes

Page 60: Gfe slideshow abreviated for upload2

Motorcycles and Scooters• These are vehicles we should use to help

provide current alternatives to gas guzzlers

• We should attempt to have these vehicles donated long term to do a thorough review and help them appear in each episode to help provide awareness for the companies that make them and show how they are practical for consumers today

• It’s quite silly actually why people feel they NEED a car when a motorcycle or scooter would satisfy 95% or more of their commuting needs.

• I don’t think we will get Americans to sell their cars in mass droves and buy motorcycles, but perhaps we can get them to buy a slightly less expensive car, and use the extra cash to buy a motorcycle or scooter, where they will save many times over in gas how much the scooter cost.

• Someone just needs to make the suggestion that it is the right thing to do, and help make it trendy. As well as do the research and make recommendations on what they should get

eco:Drive™ Application demonstrates that an automaker’s environmental responsibility should not stop when the car leaves the production line but rather extend into the actual way customers drive their cars.

• Fiat’s eco:Drive Application collects all necessary data relating to vehicle efficiency and, through the BLUE&ME™ USB port, transmits it on to any USB memory stick. Once the driver plugs the memory stick into his or her personal computer, the system presents the driver with the Fiat 500c’s detailed environmental performance, including the CO2 emission level for each trip. In addition, FIAT’s eco:Drive Application analyzes the driver’s style and provides recommendations on how to modify his or her driving style to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

• Originated in Europe, Fiat’s eco:Drive Application has encouraged drivers to set challenges – CO2 reduction targets for specific journeys or over a set period of time. And as part of a global “eco:Ville” community, the system encourages all drivers to come together and pool their fuel and emissions savings to illustrate how many drivers’ individual contributions help the greater good.
