What is NetMiner

Cyram NetMiner is an innovative software tool for Exploratory Network Data Analysis

and Visualization. It is noteworthy to underline its unique feature of the integration of

standard social network analysis (SNA) methodology with modern network visualization

(or graph drawing) techniques in the spirit of exploratory data analysis (EDA).

Cyram NetMiner allows you to explore your network data visually and interactively, and it

facilitates the detection of underlying patterns and structures of the network.

Cyram NetMiner can analyze large-size networks composed of a maximum of million

nodes. It includes not only 110 network analysis/visualization modules but general

statistical analysis/chart modules as well.

Cyram NetMiner is a GUI-and-script-based software package that provides both GUI

mode and script mode, providing the best of both worlds – being easy to use on the GUI

side and expandability on the script side. NetMiner Script is GUI-based, which means that

execution in the script mode is exactly the same as the execution in the GUI mode, not

only in terms of the results but in terms of the process as well. By using scripts the user

can handle processes more finely.

Cyram NetMiner can be employed for general research, teaching and professional analysis

in social networks. In addition, it can be effectively applied to various business fields,

where network-structural factors may critically influence performance: e.g. intra- and

inter-organizational, financial, web, criminal/intelligence, info- metric, telecommunication,

distribution, transportation networks.

About This Document

This manual is designed to guide a beginner to explore NetMiner and introduces a couple

of features which well-illustrate main concepts of NetMiner in step-by-step manner.

Full descriptions of NetMiner are covered in other manual books: “Using NetMiner” and

“NetMiner Module Reference”.

This document does not cover tutorial for the methodology of network analysis. Rather, it

is meant to be a guide for the software NetMiner.

This manual is associated with specifically NetMiner version 4.0. Please visit NetMiner

Installation, Uninstallation and Software Update

Overview

• NetMiner 4 installation Process is different for the following three cases, which is

classified by methods and term of licensing.

Case 1: Network License –. Network License is delivered to user only by Door-to-

door Express Service. Deliverables include 1) CD Media Containing NetMiner 4

Software 2) CD Media Containing Cyram Network Server License and Hardware Key

Driver 3) Hardware Key for Launching NetMiner. You should install the Hardware

Key Driver on the server computer that will run ‘Cyram Network License Server’.

USB Slot is required for this Hardware Key and Hardware Key Driver installation is

prerequisite for Network License Server installation.

Case 2: Stand-Alone License (Perpetual) – Hardware Key Driver installation is

required before NetMiner 4 software Installation. Perpetual License is delivered to

users only by Door-to-door Express Service. Deliverables include 1) CD Media

Containing NetMiner 4 software and Hardware Key Driver and 2) Hardware Key for

Running NetMiner. USB Slot is required for this Hardware key and Hardware Key

Driver installation is prerequisite for NetMiner software installation.

Notices: Door-to-door express service for CD package can be selected for Other

License. But Deliverables of other license include only CD Media containing

NetMiner 4 software. Hardware Key is required only for Perpetual License.

Case 3: Stand-Alone License (Quarter or Annual)

– Hardware Key Driver installation

is not required. Just install NetMiner 4 software.

Case 1: Network License

• Term of Network License is only perpetual. “Institute License” and “Enterprise

License” are Network License. If your License is “Institute License” or “Enterprise

License”, install as follows.

• In this case, Hardware Key Driver that will run ‘Cyram Network License Server’

should be installed on the server computer.

• Step 1: Execute the set-up program (Setup.exe).

• Step 2: Review License Agreement before installing. If you agree with it click I Agree.

• Step 3: Select folder to install NetMiner 4. Default folder is “C:\Program

Files\Cyram\NetMiner 4\”.

• Step 4: You can see the installation progress. You can see the progress details by click

Show button.

• Step 5: Confirm the finished installation. If you check “Run NetMiner 4”, NetMiner 4

runs on clicking “Finish”.

Registration

• Step 1 : Launchig NetMiner and Registration – When NetMiner is run for the first time,

you can see the registration window as follows. Enter the License Key in the blank

field. You can check your license key in your registration email.

• Step2: Enter the IP address of server computer, User ID and Password. Users are

able to check the information from the Administrator of the server system.

Case 2: Stand-Alone License (Perpetual)

• NetMiner 4 Installation Process for Perpetual License is separated into two Stages:

Stage 1: Hardware Key Driver Installation

Stage 2: NetMiner 4 Software Installation

Installation process goes stage by stage automatically by executing Setup file in your

CD media.

• Hardware Key Driver Installation is required for Using Hardware Key in USB Slot in

your local system for Running NetMiner 4.

• Hardware Key for NetMiner 4 is supplied by Third Party Manufacture. You can check

product details at:

• Step 1: Execute “Setup.exe” in “Setup” folder. Stage 1 and Stage 2 will proceed in

sequence. But if you insist, you can install Hardware Key Driver and NetMiner 4

Software in each separated process manually. We recommend you just to click “Setup.

Exe” in “Setup” folder for convenience.

• Step 2: Review License Agreement

• Step 3: Choose installation location. Default folder is

”C:\Program Files\Cyram\NetMiner 4\”

• Step 4: Hardware key installation option. If you click “Yes” Hardware key driver will

be installed automatically before NetMiner 4 Installation. If you click “No”, you must

install Hardware key driver manually. We recommend you to select “Yes”.

• Step 5: You can see the Hardware Key Driver installation Wizard as follows.

• Step 6: License Agreement.

• Step 7: Setup Type Selection. You can select “custom” if you know well about this

product.

• Step 8: Ready to Install. Click “Install”.

• Step 9: You can see installation progress.

• Step 10: Hardware Key Driver Setup is finished. You can now use Hardware Key for

Running NetMiner 4 after finishing installation of NetMiner 4. Hardware Key must be

in USB Slot of your local system where NetMiner 4 is Running.

• Step 12: Now the installation wizard goes to Stage 2 for NetMiner 4 setup. You can see

the installation progress. You can see the progress details by click Show details button.

• Step 13: Confirm the finished installation. If you check “Run NetMiner 4”, NetMiner 4

runs on clicking “Finish”. We recommend you to insert Hardware Key in your USB

Slot before continuing installation process. Because after finishing the NetMiner 4

installation process, NetMiner 4 will be launched automatically. The program will

check if the hardware key is in your local system before the launching. Note that the

Hardware Key must be in USB slot of your local system.

If you did not insert Hardware Key in the USB slot, you may see the message as

follows.

• Launching NetMiner and Registration: When NetMiner is first launched, you can

see the registration window as follows.

Enter the License Key in the blank field. You can check your license key in your

registration email.

Offline Registration

Step 1. Internet Connection is required for your system in which installed NetMiner 4

when you register it. If the system is not connected to the Internet, the following message

will be alerted.

Step 2. You can register NetMiner 4 in off-line mode. Click “Offline Register” button.

Step 3. After offline Register dialog is opened, follow the instruction on the dialog.

1. Please send the Off-line Registration below to NetMiner Team by e-

mail([email protected]).

2. NetMiner Team will send the Validation code to you.

3. Enter the Validation code to the white text box and press ‘Validate’ button.

Step 4. If registration is complete successfully, you can see the following message.

Uninstallation • You can uninstall NetMiner 4 by execute “Uninstall.exe” file in NetMiner 4

Installation Folder. If it is installed in default folder it will be “C:\Program

Files\Cyram\NetMiner 4\”.

Software Update: using “Help >> Check Update” menu

• In order to use the feature of “Help >> Check Update” menu, your computer, in which

NetMiner 4 has been installed, should have an internet access.

• By clicking “Help >> Check Update” option in the main menu, NetMiner 4 will be

automatically updated with our latest version.

• If current version is latest, following message box will appear.

• Step 1: If new update is available, a message box will pop up in order to ask you to

update the software. Click “Yes.”

• Step 2: From the NetMiner server, update file will be downloaded automatically.

• Step 3: After the download, upon “Update Setup Wizard,” please click “Next.”

• Step 4: Review License Agreement before installing. If you agree with it, click “I

Agree” button.

• Step 5: You can see the installation progress. For the progress details, please click

Show details button.

• Step 6: Now NetMiner 4 is updated to its latest version. If you check “Run NetMiner

Overview

Getting Started handles basic functions of NetMiner 4 for the beginners who are not

familiar to the unique interface of this software. This Guide is intended to help the

beginners just to follow the explanation step by step and to have experience about the main

features of NetMiner 4. Getting Started does not give full explanation of every feature of

this software.

1. Sample Data Used in This Guide

In this step, we will first give you some explanation about the sample data we will use

in the guide. You will import this sample data into NetMiner at the next step.

Although you can create new data using NetMiner, in most data analysis, data is

provided as an external file with formats such as xls, txt, csv etc.

This sample data has not been altered in order not to give any error message in the

process of importing. As almost every data analysis software requires that users

perform data cleansing process on import external file, NetMiner 4 also needs this data

cleansing process.

Please check the following files after unzipping the sample data archive file:

- Main Node_employee.xls

- 1-mode Network_work interact.xls

- 2-mode Network_purchase.xls

- Getting Started.nmf

“Getting Started.nmf” is a NetMiner Project File. All the process explained in this

guide is contained in this Project file for your convenience, which can be opened by

just double-clicking it. Other three files are built as Microsoft Excel files. String at the

left side of the underscore, “_”, of the file name represents the type of each file, and

the string at the right side of the underscore, “_”, represents the content of each file.

Main Node, 1-mode Network Data, 2-mode Network Data is commonly used data-

types, and NetMiner can handle these types of data in an integrated DataSet.

Let’s look at each data.

Main Node_employee.xls: Yellow-colored leftmost column represents Nodeset. This

nodeset includes 22 employees. Green-colored uppermost row represents Attribute.

White-colored rows contain attribute information of each employee regarding

“Department,” “Job-ranking,” “Gender,” and “Education” attributes. You may notice

that this kind of data, which can be used for meaningful network analysis such as

blockmodeling, is in fact not specific for a network analysis, but common in most data

analysis software, which computes statistical measures.

1-mode Network_work interact.xls: Yellow-colored uppermost row and leftmost

column are for the same Nodeset. Each node at the leftmost column represents source

node, while each node at the uppermost row represents target node. This kind of

network data is called as 1-mode network, because source Nodeset equals to the target

Nodeset. Nodeset in this data includes 22 employees from “Main Node_emplyee.xls”

file. White-colored cells represent how often the source node contacts the target node

for “work interact,” as the file title implies.

2-mode Network_purchase.xls: Yellow-colored column represents source nodes of

22 employees. Orange-colored row represents target nodes of 10 commodities that the

22 employees purchased. In this example, source Nodeset is not the same as the target

Nodeset, and this kind of data is called 2-mode network data. White-colored each cell

represents how many each employee purchased the target commodities as the file title

implies. The source Nodeset of 22 employees in this 2-mode network is the Nodeset

that comprises the previous 1-mode network. We call this Nodeset as Main Nodeset.

The target Nodeset (10 commodities) in the 2-mode network is called as Sub Nodeset.

We have checked 3 types of data included in the sample data folder. These data are

commonly used types for network data analysis. Now we are going to import these

data into NetMiner and perform some analyses with visualization. Please note that this

guide does not provide every feature in detail, but help beginners to explore some main

features of NetMiner 4 in step-by-step manner.

2. Launching NetMiner

If your NetMiner 4 is installed with default option, you may see the shortcut icon on

the Desktop of your computer as follows.

To launch NetMiner 4, double click the NetMiner 4 shortcut icon or execute the

“NetMiner 4.exe” file in the NetMiner 4 installation folder. If you installed NetMiner 4

at default folder, you may find this file in the following folder:

“C:\Program Files\Cyram\NetMiner 4”

You can see the following splash image while the NetMiner 4 is being launched.

This is the capture image of NetMiner 4 with blank project being created. Now it is

ready to import data and perform analysis and visualization process.

3. Importing Data

Step 1. You can see the following dialogue box for importing Excel file by selecting

Main Menu: File >> Import >> Excel file.

Step 2. Click Browse button at the top area of this dialogue box for selecting Excel file

to import. We are going to import the “Main Node_employee.xls” file for the first time.

Select this file in the file selection dialogue box and click OK. You can see some part

of the selected data in the Preview area.

Check the Column Header check box at Headers area because the “Main Node

employee.xls” has column header that describes attribute of each node. You can check

it by opening the imported Excel file. You will see that the color of the column header

changes to gray color after you check the box.

Select Main Nodeset in the Data Type area.

Select New in the Target Workfile area.

Select Insert Newly discovered nodes in the Data Integrity Option area.

Click OK if you have selected the options in this dialogue box as mentioned above.

Step 3. You can see the Workfile created in Workfile Tree area and the contents of the

Workfile in the Current Workfile area.

Step 4. If you double click the Main Nodeset in Current Workfile area, you can see the

imported data in the right side of the program as follow.

Step 5. Now we are going to import 1-mode Network data and 2-mode Network data

into NetMiner successively. These data will be imported to the current Dataset that

contains only one Nodeset data by following the Step 1 to Step 4. (Just for your

information, all the three sample data will be stored in the integrated DataSet of the

last Workfile.) Detailed description of data structure of NetMiner is described in

“Using NetMiner - Concepts – Data Structure.”

Launch the dialogue box for importing (Main Menu: File >> Import >> Excel File)

and select options in the dialogue box for importing data as follows.

Click Browse button at the top area of this dialogue box for selecting Excel file to

import. We are going to import the “1-mode Network_work interact.xls” file. Select

this file in the file selection dialogue box and click OK. You can see some part of the

selected data in the Preview area.

Check the Column Header and Row Header check box at Headers area.

Select 1-mode network data in the Data Type area and select Matrix as a type of 1-

mode network data.

Select Current in the Target Workfile area.

Select Insert Newly discovered nodes in the Data Integrity Option area.

Click OK if you have selected the options in this dialogue box as mentioned above:

Step 6. You can see that the 1-mode network data item is added to the current DataSet

by checking the Current Workfile area. If you double click the data item, you can see

the 1-mode network data at the right side of the program. In Workfile Tree area, a new

item is expanded from the first Workfile. (Note: New Workfile is expanded from the

current Workfile automatically whenever any change occurs in Current Dataset.) This

automatic expansion will help the analyst to track the history of the data analysis.

Step 7. In the same way, you can import the 2-mode network data.

Launch the dialogue box for importing (Main Menu: File >> Import >> Excel File)

and select options in the dialogue box for importing data as follows.

Click Browse button at the top area of this dialogue box for selecting Excel file to

import. We are going to import the “2-mode Network_purchase.xls” file. Select this

file in the file selection dialogue box and click OK. You can see some part of the

selected data in the Preview area.

Check the Column Header and Row Header check box at Headers area.

Select 2-mode network data in the Data Type area and select Matrix as a type of 2-

mode network data. Leave the Target Nodeset as default selection.

Select Current in the Target Workfile area.

Select Insert Newly discovered nodes in the Data Integrity Option area.

Click OK if you have selected the options in this dialogue box as above.

Step 8. You can view the imported 2-mode network data as below. Another item is

expanded in the Workfile Tree area. Double click the 2-mode network data item at

Current Workfile area and the 2-mode network data will be shown at the right side of

the program.

All the three sample data are now imported into NetMiner, we are ready for quick-tour

on NetMiner main features such as data editing, transforming, analysis, visualization

etc, from right next section below.

4. Editing Data

NetMiner has useful and powerful editing functions. You may be familiar with

NetMiner editing interface from spread sheet software, but its interface is specialized

in users’ handling of network data.

Current Workfile Area shows the hierarchical data structure from the imported sample

data from the previous steps, which include Main Nodeset, 1-mode Network data, Sub

Nodeset and 2-mode Network data. Each item is automatically named based upon the

source filename. If item name is too long to handle, you can rename the item name in

We have changed the name of each item as shown below. Try it!

Workfile Tree shows how many data transformation has been made after the import.

Each leaf expansion of item in the tree structure represents new data transformation on

top of prior dataset. In other words, the final Workfile of the structure include all the

information including the prior two dataset; therefore, for the sake of briefness, you

can simply delete those two Workfiles by selecting the Workfiles and pressing the F2

Function key or “Delete” menu in the mouse right button menu.

What we have done so far is saved in “Getting Started.nmf.” If you had a difficulty in

following the previous steps, you can use this file to continue from this point.

Now we are going to edit each data in Current Workfile.

Modifying weight in 1-mode network data: First, let’s look at the imported 1-mode

network data in NetMiner. Double click the 1-mode network data item in Current

Workfile which is designated by red lined box in the following picture.

You can see that there is no link from “Jessica” to “Anna” in the following picture.

Now let’s modify the cell value as “3”. Just click the cell and input “3”. We have added

new link with weight “3”. It is easy to change the cell value in Matrix View. NetMiner

editing panel has 3 views: Matrix, Link List and Map. You can change it by selecting

the inner tab at the bottom of the editing panel. Detailed explanation is covered in

“Using NetMiner - Concept – Work Environment”.

Adding Main Nodeset Attribute Item: Double click the red lined data item which

represents the Main Nodeset of this Workfile, you can see the Main Nodeset and

attributes at the right side of the panel.

Click “Insert Attribute” in the mouse right click menu at the column label area in the

editing panel. You can see the “New Node Attribute” dialogue box for adding attribute

item.

Input the Attribute Name as “Duration,” select the Attribute Type as “Number,” and

click OK. You will see the new column with the cell values of “-999.999” as shown

below. “-999.999” in NetMiner means that the value of the cell is not provided or

means Missing Value. Input cell values of “Duration” column as below:

5. Drawing Network Map

Here you will learn to draw network map. Generally in network data analysis,

visualization gives the intuition about the global pattern of data and a starting point to

dig up.

Select main menu: Visualize >> Spring >> 2D (CTRL+1).

You can see a Session is created as shown below. It is composed of two parts. At the

left side of it, 22 nodes without links are scattered. At the right side of it, there are

various options for selecting and controlling. We will call the left side as “Output

Panel” and the right side as “Control Panel.” In addition, each item in the Control

Panel is called “Control Item”. You can find its full description in “Using NetMiner -

Concepts – Work Environment”

Check the “work_interact” check box in the “Network” Control Item. You will see

new links created between nodes on the Output Panel without change of the

coordinates of the nodes. Press “Run Layout” button in the Control Panel without

modifying other options. A network map will be drawn according to the layout

algorithm selected in the Control Panel.

Full explanation about visualization is covered in “Using NetMiner - Tasks – Visual

Exploration”.

6. Styling Nodes by Node Attribute

Each node on the network map drawn at the previous step represents employee. You

can give each of these nodes different style (shape, color, size) according to the

attribute of each node. For example, we are going to give different color to the nodes

based upon its department attribute.

Click the icon surrounded by the red box in the Tool Bar as shown below:

You can see a dialogue box for giving different style to each node according to the

attribute of node.

Select Color tab. And select Variable as “Node Attribute – Department” as follows.

And click Apply button.

You can see the color of each node change as follows. Using NetMiner, you can give

any style to any selected nodes and links. Full description is covered in “Using

NetMiner - Tasks – Visual Exploration – Styling Nodes and Links”.

7. Saving Network Map

To save the network map as picture file, click main menu “Map – Capture Map – To

File.”

NetMiner supports BMP, JPG, SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) formats for saving

picture.

8. Performing Data Analysis

Let us explain how to generate output results. For example, we are going to calculate

the “Degree Centrality” of each node. Degree Centrality is a measurement for

centrality of each node based on “how many direct neighbors a node have.”

Click main menu “Analyze >> Centrality >> Degree” for analyzing Degree

Centrality. You can see a Session created. Output results will be shown at the left gray

colored side. At the right side of it, you can see a few options for selection. Select

“work_interact” in the Input Control Item. Click “Run Process” button at the bottom

of the Control Panel.

You can see that the output results are generated at the left side. Each of these outputs

can be selected by the Inner Tab at the bottom of the output panel as follows. As the

output results of the “Degree Centrality” analysis, “Main Reports, Degree Centrality

Vector, Spring Map and Concentic Map” is generated at the same time. You can check

each of these outputs by clicking the inner tab.

9. Using Output Results

Let’s employ the previous output results for another process in NetMiner. We are going

to draw box plot comparing the “In Degree Centrality” value with respect to “Gender”.

For this process, we need to add the previous result of “In Degree Centrality Vector” to

the attribute of Main Node.

At the bottom of the Output Panel, click the Degree Centrality Vector Inner Tab, and

then click the main menu “Data >> Add Output Table >> Main Node Attribute.”

You can see the dialogue box for selecting data as follows. Select “In-Degree

Centrality” and click OK.

Now you can check the added “In-Degree Centrality” vector in the Main Node

Attribute data as follows. Double click the employee in the Current Workfile and you

can check the added attribute as follows. This added attribute can be used for another

process that requires main node attribute data.

Click main menu “Chart >> Box Plot.” We are going to compare the “In Degree

Centrality” with respect to “Gender.” So select the control panel option as follows:

Dependant Variable: In-Degree Centrality, Independent Variable: Gender.

Click “Run Process” button, and check the box plot in the Output Panel at the left side.

10. Saving Project and Exit

When you need to exit NetMiner or to open (create) another NetMiner project, you

need to select the saving option as follows. “Untitled Project” will be removed, unless

you save it.

You can save your file by selecting “File >> Save (CTRL + S)”.

The extension for the NetMiner Project file is NMF.
