Approximately an hour west of Mackay, the township of Eungella boasts a unique environment. There are 25 km of graded walking trails which range in length and level of challenge from a 300m wheelchair accessible walk to a 17 km circuit hike featuring stunning mountain and rainforest scenery to the 57km Mackay Highlands Great Walk. Eungella’s native fauna ranges from Gastric Brooding Frogs, Eastern Long Neck Turtles, Possums, Paddymelons and the bright blue Ulysses Butterfly. Birdwatchers will observe an abundance of species including the endemic Eungella Honeyeater. 35 minutes drive south-west of the township is Eungella Dam, providing world class Sooty Grunter fishing (permits required), swimming, water activities and camping. Eungella has some charming cafes and restaurants, a historic pub, several food and souvenir outlets and a range of accommodation and camping options. Picnics in the crisp mountain air are popular at any of the well equipped picnic grounds throughout the area. The usual approach to Eungella from Mackay is along the scenic Pioneer Valley following the Mackay-Eungella Road.
