Welcome and Introductions

• Thank you for joining us this evening as we begin our partnership to support and create a life-long love of learning with your child.

• We will be working together to help your child be successful at school.

• This is a big step and an exciting time for you and your child.

Kindergarten Is for All Children

• Children enter Kindergarten with different backgrounds, language, experiences, stages of development.

• They all need support and we work together to help all children be successful!

Kindergarten Day

What does the typical day look like?

• Arrival Dismissal in Kinder-yard

• Morning routines

• Playful learning

• Outdoor Recess

• Lunch

• Physical Education

Arrival

• Drop off your child at the Kinder-yard

(8:15am - 8:30am).

• When the bell goes your child will line up outside the classroom with the Yard Supervisor

• Your child will enter the classroom & follow morning routines in the class

• Phoebe Gilman is a walking school and we encourage you to walk your child to and from school when possible.

Dismissal

• The bell goes at 3:00pm

• Students line up at the safety wall in the Kinder-yard.

• Teacher dismisses each child after making eye-contact with parent/ caregiver

• Parents/caregivers wait at the fence.

Transportation

• As per Board Policy #680, Transportation to Schools, a child (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3) who lives within 1.2 kilometers from the school shall not be entitled to transportation.

• Parents can access information from the Student Transportation Services website www.schoolbuscity.com

Supported Entry

• Your child’s first day of school will be after lunch recess to the end of the day.

1:20-3:00 pm

First Day of School

• Make the first day fun.

• Get up in time so you are not rushing.

• Be calm.

• Talk about the fun things (s)he will be doing.

• Take your child to the bus stop or to the school.

• Make sure your child gets to school on time and is picked up on time.

The first day of school is a big

event in the life of a family,

make it a positive one!

Saying Goodbye....

• Introduce your child to a buddy from his/her class.

• Give your child a kiss and say goodbye. • Practise your goodbye routine ahead of

time. • Reassure your child that you know

(s)he’ll be okay and that you will be picking him/her up after school.

Snacks and Lunches

• Food allergies (no nuts or traces of nuts)

• Healthy & nutritious (no pop or candy!)

• Easy to open & eat independently. This supports the development of the curriculum expectation of self-regulation.

• Litter-less lunches

• Prepare lunches and snacks together the night before

• Lunch & Outdoor play between 12:20pm and 1:20pm

Washroom and Self-Help Routines

• At school, children:

– Use washroom (in the classroom) independently

– Wash hands with soap

– Dress and undress independently

• belts, zippers, buttons

• coat, boots, hats, mittens, shoes

Over the Summer

– Walk to school and have a picnic.

– Find/read signs around the school

– Find the outside entrance to the Kindergarten area.

– Establish bedtime routines and morning routines.

– Make up a fun goodbye routine and practise it before school starts.

Looking Forward

• May 7th: Phoebe Gilman Public School Grand Opening. We

welcome you to join us from 6:30-8:30 at Phoebe Gilman Public

School to celebrate the official opening of our brand new school.

• May 13th: Welcome to Kindergarten Activity Day. You will

bring your children to experience some activities that they will learn in Kindergarten. We have an afternoon and evening session. Please make sure you sign up for one of these sessions before you leave.

• June 18th : Bring your child to meet a Kindergarten teacher.

You will be contacted with your time slot between 9-12.
