The macro photo competition is on display and we’re hoping that you’ll come in and vote. It is the last photo competition for 2012 (as I know how crazy everything gets the closer we get to Christmas). There are nine photos on display and they are excellent! Voting will close at midday on Friday 5th October, that way we can get the results published in the next Lakes Link. Don’t think too hard about photographic structure, technicalities, etc. etc. - just pick the photo that you like!

Well all of us at the CRC worked hard to turn into a bunch of cyber gurus last week with our e-commerce workshop, we’re a little closer than we were the week before however we still have a way to go. The Lake Grace CRC already has a website but we picked up a few tips on how to improve our web presence. The CRC will be working on becoming adept at helping set up websites so if you’re interested in us helping you then we would love to hear from you.

We need you to find us on Facebook. At this stage we are into double figures for ‘likes’ (not too bad in just a few days) but we want to build up our friendships with other Facebook users as this will help us grow our presence in the Facebook world. I was thinking it could take us a while to get a ‘like’ out of the orbit of the Lake Grace CRC staff but was stunned to get a like within two minutes of going live! Hadn’t even posted anything interesting or exciting on our page. The Manager of the Dalwallinu CRC just happened to be manning a site at the Mingenew Expo and just happened to be showing a client how to do something on Facebook when the Lake Grace CRC stepped into her life. Naturally she had to like us!

I now have the enrolment forms for the Skippers Ticket. For those who have already put their names down I will email you the forms. We are looking for more names to do this course so please give us a call if you’re interested.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who will be manning the Driver Reviver van this weekend. I know the travellers will be grateful for your assistance. If you would like to volunteer for future outings of the van then we would love to hear from you.

Living Communities is organising ‘Late Night Shopping’ for Lake Grace on the afternoon / evening of the 14th December. If you would like to have a stall either for yourself or do some fundraising for your club then we would love to hear from you. It is an ideal opportunity to get together, have some fun and buy those last minute Christmas presents. Please call Peter Stoffberg (0428 511 838), Tracey Earnshaw (9865 1848) or Suzanne Reeves (9865 1470) if you would like more information.

As the end of the year approaches (groan) the Lake Grace CRC will be printing calendars for sale, the price will be $20 per calendar or $25 if you wish to personalise with your own photos or add extra information such as family birthdays or anniversaries. The images on the calendar will be specific to Lake Grace and will be supplied by our local amateur photographers.

I will schedule some 3 hour workshops in Excel and Beginner Word for October / November, if you are interested in attending please give a call. As yet I don’t have dates for these workshops.

We need a woman! Just one more woman! Then we can have our chainsaw workshop for women. So come on girls, put your name down.

Is That the Postie?? A bunch of postie bike enthusiasts who also happen to be members of the Leeuwin Lions Club had the bright idea of satisfying their enjoyment of riding their 110cc Hondas and also raise some money for the Royal Flying Doctor service. Whilst riding their bikes from Augusta to Albany during last week’s inclement weather, they had to keep reminding themselves how much they enjoyed what they were doing. The group aim to cover 1,700km, visit 30 towns and rattle collection tins at 31 different Lions clubs, all in just seven days. Dedicated to fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Leeuwin Lions Club members Les Bumbak and Ken John, together with half a dozen mates all riding 110cc Hondas, are excited about their whirlwind tour. The postie bikers have networked with members of 31 Lions clubs along the route and will be stopping in places such as Collie, Lake Grace and Albany, before ending up back in Augusta on September 27.

This group was in Lake Grace on Sunday 23rd September arriving at 5.00pm after travelling from Albany. Local Lions supplied a barbecue tea and joined in for some fellowship with the eight riders and their four support staff at the sports pavilion where the team bedded down for the night. Next morning after a quick photo shoot outside Elders and Landmark who are major sponsors of the tour they left town at 8.00am Monday 24th bound for Hyden. With a growing list of generous sponsors headed by Caltex Australia, Honda and rural specialists Elders, Landmark, Primaries and WestCoast Livestock, the postie bikers are quietly confident that their fundraising adventure will prove a winner. In fact, their advice to all supporters and spectators along the route is to send all donations for the Flying Doctor to: Postie Bike Ride, Leeuwin Lions Club, PO Box 100, Augusta, 6290.

Where is the dolphin?? There has been a faithful pair of dolphins having a fine time cavorting in Lake Grace; they have spent time swimming in the lakes both south and north

of the highway. However one now appears to have hit the highway.

Does anyone know what has happened to the missing dolphin? Its mate is missing his company and as everyone would know other dolphins are

hard to find in Lake Grace.

There’s no reward for the return of the missing dolphin except for the knowledge that you would be making

another dolphin and a bus load of kids (Tarin Rock bus run) very happy!

Farmsafe WA was on the road in the Wheatbelt last week as part of their strategy to assist those in rural areas combat mental illness. Assisting them in their campaign was a multitude of sponsors and guest speaker Heath Black. Heath laid bare his struggle with mental illness throughout his 12 year AFL career and the realisation that what was written off as bad behaviour was in fact a long overdue diagnosis of bipolar and ADHD; all fuelled by an over consumption of alcohol. The diagnosis was a light at the end of the tunnel for Heath as he had struggled with anxiety and self-destructive behaviour, all of which were having a horrendous impact on his life and general well-being. With life on a more even keel and the realisation of what he had put his family and friends through Heath is keen to use his experience to help others. Partnered with Farmsafe WA, funded by Healthway and supported by Life, Regional Men’s Health, Rural Financial Counselling Service WA, Rural Community Support Service and Act Belong Commit; the Roadshow involves Heath telling his story while others from available support networks tell those present what services are available for them. Support speakers spoke of the necessity for everyone to look after themselves first, that way they would find it easier to look after everything else. Life balance is important as is the need to communicate and to manage those parts of your life and business that you can have an impact on. Christine Baker, a farmer’s wife who has been living in the Wheatbelt for almost 30 years and has been trained in mediation, spoke about the importance of addressing stress and conflict within the farm business / family relationships before things got out of hand.

The Farmsafe visit with their guest speakers was well received by those who attended. With country life revolving around sport there is a realisation in the mental health industry that country people identify with high profile sports people and are more likely to respond to their stories rather than an account of symptoms from a health professional.

October is approaching bringing with it longer, warmer days with a hint of what's to come. The last few harvests have seen a growing number of people fitting TV camera systems to trucks, chaser bins and headers. The screens are available in a range of sizes and the seven inch versions are available in a quad screen, which means you can view four camera screens at once. The cameras have infrared LEDs for night vision and the picture is quite clear. We also stock and sell reversing camera set ups for your car, 4WD or truck. It makes parking, reversing, or backing up to trailers so much easier. We have a couple on display in our showroom so come on in and have a look.

We also have in stock AXIS radio/CD receivers which are 12/24v and you can plug in IPOD, I Phones etc. To complement our Kenwood range of car Hi Fi equipment we have some Blaupunkt (German for Bosch) CD receivers which will blue tooth up to your phone. This means you only need an aerial for increased reception and a power source to recharge the phone. No need to fit car kits anymore. Multi fit hands free cradles are a good idea and pretty easy to fit.

Don’t forget about your pre season service checks for harvest as alternators etc operate in fairly dusty conditions. Replacing bearings and cleaning debris is a lot cheaper alternative to replacing units. That goes for air-conditioned and blower fan motors as well.

Give Ross or Joel a ring today and book in for a pre season field service trip.

Daycare Busy Bee

On Sunday 23rd September, the Lake Grace Day Care held a busy bee to build a new sand pit for the centre. On arrival we were all a little surprised to find that three busy bees being Derek, Athol and Gaillene, had already been busy on Saturday and the sand pit was already built!!!!

Gaillene, not wanting to disappoint the bees (one child asking if there would be real bees?) who had turned up, had organised other jobs for us to do.

The cubby house, bridge, wishing well and castle were all given a new lease of life, with a coat of oil to stop the weather getting into the wood and the men were put in charge of designing and building a figure of eight concrete race track for the children to push their cars along.

Once the track was complete there was enough concrete left to make a small slab for the children of Daycare age who were at the busy bee (and Gaillene) to put their hand prints and names in and the year 2012 for posterity.

A well deserved hot cuppa and an extremely delicious array of afternoon tea was enjoyed, especially by the children.

Thank you to all the parents and children who came along. Many hands made light work.

And no, there were no real bees there.

Although harvest is still some time away we are now coming to the time of year that is often the most critical in getting prepared for harvest. We know with our ma-chines the better we service and prepare them the more likely it is we will have a trouble free harvest. If we know this about machines do we also apply the same logic to our own preparedness for the season ahead? In many ways as blokes we can overlook the basics of self-care; perhaps we should be wired up like a machine with filter change lights or warning buzzers like machines! As with our machines preventative maintenance is the key to getting through the busy times without break-downs. There are the things we can do for ourselves like adequate rest and exercise plus a healthy diet, but like our machines a bit of expert input is also required to ensure the unseen things are also functioning well. When it comes to your health “expert” your GP is the first place to call. When you visit your GP it is also criti-cal that YOU have some questions about what you want checked. If you think about this it’s how we deal with machines, when the technician arrives we tell him what our concerns are, what we may perceive as a weak spot or a developing problem. Do the same with your doctor.

When you make that list for checks there are some es-sential ones, blood pressure, heart, skin weight, sight, and hearing but you then need to add family history like specific cancers in your family or other specific issues like joint pain etc. If you are over 40 you should also insist on relevant blood tests including PSA (prostate) and cholesterol. The other issue is always distress. Remember to check your “Shock Absorbers” remember talking about issues is usually half way to a solution. Our recommendation is always before it gets too much….TALK TO A MATE! Your GP is again a good starting point, but family also need to be kept informed as to how things are going. Harvest can be busy, we know that, but if we prepare well it can also be very rewarding so now is the time to prepare and then we will be off and racing when the time comes!

Well done to Amanda Milton who was recently nominated by St John Ambulance for their volunteer of the Year award. Although Amanda didn’t win the overall title, simply being nominated is a privilege in itself as only six nominees are chosen in WA each year. The nominations are generated at a regional level with the announcement of the winner made at St John Ambulance’s state conference. Amanda was the nominee for the Wheatbelt region. The following is the citation that formed Amanda’s nomination. ‘Amanda joined the Lake Grace Sub Centre in 2003, and is an articulate advocate for volunteers in the Lake Grace community and St John Ambulance WA as a whole. Amanda currently holds the position of Chairperson and she shows great dedication, focus and professionalism in the development of a new Sub Centre building for Lake Grace. Amanda has worked closely with the St John Ambulance WA Property Department to progress the project. Through Amanda’s leadership, the Sub Centre has also become involved in Southern Inland Health Initiative consultations, as well as Lake Grace’s 100-year anniversary celebrations. More recently, Amanda has

helped forge closer partnerships in the community with WA County Health Service and FESA. Her strong guidance and invaluable efforts will see Lake Grace Sub Centre’s continued improvement and success.’

Sit back Lake Grace and enjoy the story of Janet Berendese, Anyone wanting to tell their story please contact the CRC on 9865 1470 or email lakegracecrc.net.au

I was born in Raamsdonk, North Brabant and grew up in Tiel in the province off Gelderland in the centre of Holland; my mum and brother still live there now. Co and I met when I was 16. I got a job with a company that built cranes, Co was a mechanic there.

When I moved on to another company Co followed me. We married in 1974 and moved to Lelystad in the Flevopolder. Lelystad was a brand new town. It was attracting a lot of people because there were big incentives for companies to relocate there. When we moved there 8,000 people lived there, 8 years later when we left the was population 80,000 people.

The city, built on reclaimed land, was founded in 1967 and was named after Cornelis Lely, who engineered making the reclamation possible. Lelystad is approximately 5 metres below sea level.

The Netherlands When people think of the Netherlands two things often come to mind: Tulips and windmills. Both of these have been symbols of this European country for centuries.

In the 20th century the Dutch engaged in two massive projects to enlarge and secure their land against the ocean. The Zuiderzee Works and Delta Works took most of the century to complete and together are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Polders The Netherlands is one of the most low-lying countries in the world. Today about a quarter of the land area is actually below sea level. Because of this when a large storm raises the water level along the coast much of the country is subject to heavy flooding.

In the first century A.D. people began building artificial hills, called terps, and locating their villages and towns on top of them so that when floods came their homes would be safe. After a while it occurred to the people that if they connected the terps together with long walls, called dikes, they could keep the water out of their farmlands also.

Eventually the Dutch started eyeing areas that had been unusable because they were flood zones or were underwater like marshes and lakes. Dikes were built around these and they were given the name “polders”. For a polder to be made dry enough for farming or building they had to be drained of water. The earliest pumps were connected to windmills and driven by the wind.

Taming the Zuiderzee One of most notable features of the Netherlands was the Zuiderzee. The name meant "Southern Sea" in Dutch, but it was actually a shallow bay of the North

Sea that ran 100km inland and was about 50km wide. Despite its great size it was only about 15 feet deep. Making Land Even before the Afsluitdijk Dam was complete, the Dutch started working on the first of the polders, the Wieringermeer. Its dikes were completed in 1929 and by 1930 it had been pumped dry, not by windmills, but by one modern diesel powered pumping station and one electrically powered pumping station. Both used large Archimedes screw type pumps to move the water. Additional work took another four years before the land could be used for agriculture and construction. The polder added a total of 75 square miles of area to the country.

The second polder, the Noordoostpolder, was started in 1936 and draining it wasn't finished until 1942. The area turned out to be a good resource for the Dutch Underground resistance in World War II as it provided almost 230 square miles of undeveloped land to hide from the Nazi occupation force.

World War II also brought some setbacks to the project, however. In April 1945, the retreating German forces blew up the dike of the Wieringermeer, flooding the land again. Fortunately the Dutch managed to reclaim the polder by the end of the year, though much of the infrastructure was destroyed and had to be rebuilt.

In 1950 work on the the Oostelijk Flevoland, the third polder, was started and by 1957 it had added 208 square miles of territory to the Netherlands. Two years later work on the fourth polder, Zuidelijk Flevoland, was started and finished in 1967.

Though officially completed in 1997 at the cost of $7 billion, the Netherlands continues to add infrastructure to the Delta works as needed. It is estimated that it will continue to need construction to protect the area against the rising water levels caused by global warming. The whole project created 895 square miles of land. (2318 square km).

Our migration to Australia can be directly attributed to my mum; she was at a family birthday party and just happened to mention that Co and I would like to go to Australia. Mum didn’t realise how far it was. Later she said she wished she never opened her mouth.

The phone rang early one morning and it was John de Vree offering Co a job. I said ‘Why not we’ve got nothing to lose’. It took 18 months to get the paperwork in order, medicals etc.

We came straight to Lake Grace and agreed to stay for two years but, liked it so much that we bought a house within six months. We’ve been here for 30 years. The first five years Co worked at John Deere, and then 25 years ago we started our own business. Co worked nine years as a mobile mechanic then we put up the workshop and have worked from there for 16 years.

Coming to Australia was a big adjustment for us even though we had learned English in Holland, it was our second language.

We arrived on the Wednesday, Co started work on Thursday and after work he came home and said to me “Janet, we have learned the wrong language! Aussie is nothing like English”. He was serious. With the slang it was nothing like the English we had learned.

The kids went to school here straight away. When we migrated Monique was three years old and Patrick was nearly six. Patrick went to Kindy for about five weeks before starting Year one. For the first three months Monique didn’t speak at all. It was while having her hair cut by Jay De Vree that Monique said something in English, from then on she was fine and spoke it easily. She understands Dutch but can’t speak it.

Both children went through school here at Lake Grace. Patrick started his apprenticeship after finishing Year 10 and became a fully qualified Heavy Duty Mechanic and then went his own way. Monique did year 11 and 12 at Narrogin Senior High School, it was hard for her initially as she didn’t like being away from home. It was always her plan to be a doctor but she was 2 points short in TEE. She studied forensics for a year at UWA then changed courses graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Western Australia. Monique’s background includes research & cell culture before moving to the manufacture of an autologous cell-based therapeutic product in a GMP environment.

Monique joined OrthoCell in April 2007 and is currently the operations manager. ACI involves firstly a day procedure whereby healthy articular cartilage is arthroscopically harvested from the knee joint. This biopsied tissue is sent off to a specially designed and regulated laboratory where the building blocks of the cartilage, the Chondroctye cells, are isolated and grown to a clinically significant number.

The cells are returned to your joint in approximately 5 weeks by a custom designed delivery scaffold. An orthopaedic surgeon will implant the cells through a small incision.

Monique is married and lives in Perth with husband Brett and son, Harvey

My parents visited from Holland regularly, nine times together and mum has been out three times since dad passed away. My brother came to visit in 2003, this was the first time I met his family.

Mum was scared of flying and always said she would never fly. But she said “now I will have to fly”. When we left Holland my mum said “you can write in a letter how much you like it but I am coming to have a look for myself” and sure enough she came after we had been here a year. We picked them up from the airport in the bright orange XC Ford Falcon car we had at the time. Just after Halfway House we turned off to come home via Wandering. I remember Dad saying “It can’t be far now we are going off the highway”. How wrong he was. He couldn’t believe how few houses and cars there were.

Dad always wanted to come to Australia but he never thought he would come to visit his family. He loved to go to the farms and see machinery.

He would sit in the garden and move with the sun. Needless to say when they left to go back home he was very brown, he couldn’t believe we didn’t sit in the sun.

When Co was still working for John Deere he went one morning early to do some field service, it was a balmy morning and Co had the window open with his arm resting on the door. When he saw a snake he ran over it and tried to brake to kill the snake but the snake spun around and hit his arm. Since then whenever he sees a snake on the road the window goes up tightly, and the hairs on his neck still stand up.

Another story was when we still had our caravan in Bremer Bay, we loved to go fishing. One year Mum and Dad came with us and we went to Flat Rock I caught a “dog shark” and Dad dropped his fishing rod and ran up the hill shouting a shark, a shark needless to say we were in hysterics.

I have worked in Lake Grace my whole life either part time or full time. First at the Golden Fleece as a kitchen hand. Then at the Co-op for quite a while. The Co-op bought the clothing shop Pimpernelia where Sand and Salt is now. From Pimpernelia I went to work for Katanning furnishings in a little shop opposite the post office then later they relocated to the Barn.

My next job was with Westpac for 6 years, and then I worked in the office for Graham Jacobs where Rabobank is now. They changed the Electoral boundaries and the office was closed from there I moved into my current place of employment, the Lake Grace Hospital.

Co and I are looking forward to retirement. We have enjoyed our lives in Lake Grace immensely, It’s a great place to live and bring up a family but we always wanted to be near the ocean so that’s where we hope to retire to.

Women aged 50-69 years are urged to take advantage of the FREE screening mammography service in Lake Grace. The Health Department’s mobile van will be located at Lake Grace Shire Hall, Bennett Street from 17/10/2012 to 19/10/2012.

The Service will then be moving to Dumbleyung and Wagin.

Routine screening mammograms every two years for women aged 50 to 69 can significantly increase the chance of woman surviving breast cancer and reduce the amount of treatment required. Current medical evidence shows that screening is most effective for this age group. More than 70% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50.

BreastScreen WA’s Medical Director Dr Elizabeth Wylie, said screening mammography was the most effective method for early detection of breast cancer.

“One in 9 women in Australia will develop breast cancer in their lifetime”.

“The biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and being over 50 years of age”.

“Screening every two years is vitally important to increase the chance of a cancer being detected when it is too small to feel or be noticed. Finding a cancer at this early stage often means that the breast cancer is

small and can be more effectively treated”.

“Breast cancer is not choosy about who it affects - all women are at risk of developing it, regardless of their family history”.

Screening mammograms can detect up to 90% of breast cancers.

Any woman with a persistent change in a breast should see her doctor immediately.

An appointment for a free screening mammogram can be made by calling 13 20 50. Early detection is your best protection.

Lake Grace Artists’ Group Another month has passed and we are already talking about our Christmas party, how scary is that. Any ideas for our Christmas party, WHEN, HOW, WHERE, WHAT? I guess all other groups have or will start putting it on their agenda.

The Found, Etched and Connected Jewellery workshop - With Christine Atkins will be on Dec 1st-2nd. Could all people wishing to do this get back to Tania on 9865 1 339 within the week to let us know if this is suitable. Otherwise we will plan this for early next year. So anyone whether you are an art group member or not you are invited to participate in this workshop please ring Tania to express your interest.

Christine Atkins is an interesting artist with many skills, check her out on the web to see some of her very detailed work; she also has an exhibition at the Mundaring Art Centre at present which you can also check on line.

Printmaking workshop- Have had a very slow response but more members at the meeting indicated that they where interested we will go ahead and organise to do this in February next year as we’re running out of 2012. We nearly have the space cleaned and I may have the plate for the other printing press by then. Sorry about the delay.

Christmas Baubles workshop - each Tuesday in October 10am-3pm Does anyone have any wire hanging baskets that we can have? these can be joined together to create good size baubles. Ask your friends family etc etc, everyone will count. If you have any please drop them down the lane behind the little shop next door that would be a huge help and a way to clean out those unloved hanging baskets that are no longer needed but too good to take to the tip PLEASE.

At the Newdegate Field Days an artist sent in work that was done with an air brush, Tania is going to try and

find out contacts and see if she will do a workshop. When, where, how etc etc? Hillary Willcocks donated art books and magazines to the art group huge THANK YOU to Hillary they fit into our library very well.

Val Whiting has catalogued and put them in the library already thanks Val.

WOODWORKERS We are looking at having a WOODIES exhibition in December and we are inviting any wood work artists and crafts people to get in contact with Tania Spencer or myself to be part of this exhibition.

We have some wonderful woodwork crafts people around the district. Whether you are a fine furniture maker, recycled wood craft person or are into the bush timber furniture etc you are welcome to exhibit in this exhibition. You only have to have one piece of work to be part of this exhibition but more is definitely okay as well. This will be an exhibition of woodworkers from around the district we hope. What a way to showcase all those hidden talents that are chiselling away in their back sheds, like all that fabulous talent we found in Phil Young’s shed. Please don’t be shy to make this work we need to know who is out there, yes you can dob in a friend so we can invite them to participate.

Next Art Group meeting at the Artspace 1pm Tuesday 16th October.

Slight change We are going to meet out at Tarin Rock Reserve at 10am and then maybe go to Sarah's for the meeting so bring picnic morning tea and lunch stuff, water, camera, art stuff if you want, journal etc

“Don’t forget” please wear closed in shoes and long pants, hat, fly net just in case etc

Western Power will be offering young Western Australians the chance to secure a paid apprenticeship during a state-wide recruitment drive.

As part of its commitment to offering training opportunities for young people, Western Power is looking to take on up to sixty apprentice electricians and line-workers over the coming year.

“We look to employ local Western Australians as a priority and seek to provide avenues for young people to learn valuable skills which will allow them to pursue a career in the energy sector” said Trina Capps, head of recruitment at Western Power.

Western Power builds, maintains and operates the electricity network in the South West corner of Western Australia.

Fourth year electrical apprentice Shea Laver said he had no regrets about leaving his job building caravans to pursue a career with Western Power.

The 28-year-old has less than seven months remaining on his apprenticeship, upon which he will graduate with a Certificate 3 Electro-technology Electrician.

“Building caravans was okay but there is only so far you can go in it really,” Shea said.

“What appealed to me about an apprenticeship with Western Power was the opportunity to carve out a long career in an interesting field.”

“It’s a unique business and unlike any other apprenticeship available. There is never a dull moment working for Western Power.

“I didn’t realise how complex the electricity network was. There has been a lot to learn, but I am enjoying every minute of it” he said.

Western Power is a significant employer of Western Australians and offers exciting, high powered career opportunities for those looking to enter the dynamic energy sector.

Under the leadership of qualified tradespeople and team coordinators, the Western Power Apprenticeship Program offers young people the chance to participate in structured training towards a nationally recognised trade qualification.

The Apprenticeship Program comprises four years of comprehensive training provided both in the

field and at TAFE, building the foundation for a career as a qualified electrician.

Lineworker apprentices complete on and off the job training, which includes low voltage and high voltage energised work.

While there is a TAFE component to the training, line worker training takes place at Western Power’s registered training organisation, Power Training Services, at Jandakot and supplemented by on the job training across metropolitan and regional depots.

“Crew members develop really close bonds with their work teams. They look out for each other at work and socialise together afterwards. It’s about going to work, completing the job and going home safely” said Craig Marley, training manager at Power Training Services.

“The fact that electricity is potentially deadly is never far from their minds” Marley added.

Western Power also works with universities to provide scholarships and vacation employment opportunities for graduate students.

“Western Power employs hundreds of highly qualified engineers, and are currently looking for skilled graduates from the state’s universities” Miss Capps said.

To be eligible for the apprenticeships, applicants must hold a valid WA Driver’s License Class "C" or "C - A", have successfully completed Year 11 or post secondary equivalents in Maths, English and Science, and be eligible to work in Australia.

For more information about a career with Western Power go to highlychargedcareers.com.au or contact 08 9326 6032.

The Department of Agriculture and Food and the Eastern Wheatbelt Declared Species group advises that from 30th September 2012 and 30th

September 2013 community aerial and ground baiting programs (using 1080 meat baits) to control wild dogs will be carried out by Doggers and the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) across the Eastern Wheatbelt regions. In addition to 1080 baiting programs Licensed Pest Control Operators will be using Foot hold traps treated with Strychnine to remove Wild Dogs that could impact on the Livestock industry in the Eastern Wheatbelt region. Additional intermittent ground baiting of pastoral leases, DEC reserves, unallocated Crown Lands and freehold farms in these areas may also be carried out at any time. The poison baits will remain toxic for a number of months or until substantial rainfall is received. People are advised to take care when working within or visiting these areas.

Warning signs have been placed where applicable on pastoral, DEC, unallocated Crown Land and main access roads throughout the region. Please consult with individual pastoralists, DEC and/or farmers prior to entering their lands. Picnic sites and recreational reserves are not included within the baiting program, however, baiting may take place adjacent to such areas and domestic pets should be kept close and under control at all times. 1080 baiting is an integral part of the wild dog pest management program. Pastoralists, DEC and farmers undertake these poisoning programs to protect livestock from death and injury caused by wild dogs. If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre (phone 13 11 26). However there were other ways of making your presence felt at no cost at all simply by utilising directories such as ‘True Local’ and ‘Google +’. These sites can also be used in addition to a webpage; creating an intricate network that maximises a business’s opportunities in snaring customers. Upkeep of webpages can be problematic; if it is obvious the data on a website is so out of date it is no longer relevant the business could lose credibility. The web is now the first place people go to find information about a product, service or business. With content on the web being long lasting it can be the most cost effective way of getting new customers. The web expands a business’s market beyond their local area and for service industries is an effective way of offering information. While the morning was a two hour expedition across the web, the afternoon provided a lesson in the use of social media in your business. With the focus on Facebook, the participants learned Focus wasn’t all about discussing what you had for breakfast but could be harnessed to provide a useful way of exposing your business to the 13 million users in Australia alone.

Peta explained that a Facebook page could be set up to be utilised in a similar way to a webpage, and that each time you posted those who ‘liked’ you would get an update into what was happening within your business (or organisation). The big hurdle with Facebook is that you need to be ‘Liked’ in order to get yourself out there. With people spending more hours on the internet than watching television it is becoming quite apparent that to ignore the internet could be ignoring the longevity of your business. Following the workshop each of the participants took the opportunity to have an hour one-on-one with Peta to work out what form of internet presence would be best for their business. Staff at the Lake Grace CRC will be undertaking more training in the development and maintenance of websites and look forward to offering this as a service to the Lake Grace community. We will be needing some ‘guinea pigs’ to hone our skills so if you are considering setting up a webpage for your organisation or business and would like us to do it for you then please give us a call on 9865 1470.

On a balmy spring day last Thursday, the Kukerin Golf Club conducted a scroungers day on behalf of the Josh Joyce’s family. It was a day of remembrance, reflection and fellowship with over 100 people coming from all over the south-west to take part. A lot of the group in the three person Ambrose event were made up of not so regular or skilled golfers as they were part of not only Yoda’s immediate family, but his extended one as well. Before tee off there was a minute silence to pause and remember Josh who so dearly loved golf and was an important part of not only the golfing community, but the cricket one as well. Prior to presentations Colin and Ronni spoke to say thanks to those who had come so far and for everyone taking the time to be there on this special golf day to help ease the pain of losing Josh. The winners of the Josh Joyce Memorial Trophy with a good score of 53 net were K Gooding, D Mott and M Roberts. Second was C Norris, T Prater and B Jordinson Third place were N and T Ditchburn and M

Ball. Fourth was won by K and P Adams and M French. Fifth was M and N Norrish and A Joyce. Sixth on a c/b were R and B Mott and D Head with M Wallace, J O’Neill and J Groenenburg coming in seventh. Gross winners were I Carshausen, R Ditchburn and T Triglone with 61. The numerous very generous sponsors of the day were thanked for their donations of the day’s golf prizes. Our wonderful ladies once again provided all with plenty of food during the day and a banquet for the evening meal to cap off what had been a tremendous day for all involved. Normal club golf on Saturday was a Stableford playing for the Cambinata Yabbies trophy. Ladies winner was D Smith with J Joyce close behind and also claiming the sweep. Men's winner was N Ditchburn on 43 with P King 2nd on 40. Sweep was won by C Ditchburn, Ian Falkner and P Nenke. D Smith and I Faulkner both won novelties.

Lake Grace’s Junior Golf members played the final round of their championship on Sunday 16th September. The first round played a fortnight earlier had seen some good results from the young golfers, but the second round seemed to be more challenging; a phenomenon that the senior golfers who were present could identify with. Winning the Junior Golf shield was Reece Lay; runner-up was the 2011 Champion Adam Hunt. Winning the B Grade trophy was Molly Owen, while Keirnan Harvey was runner-up in this division. Most improved through the season was Emily Parker, the Encouragement award went to Sophie Parker and the Coaches’ Award went to Travis Duckworth. Travis happened to be off surfing that weekend so his younger brother Ethan fronted up to not only pick up his trophy but to also give an excellent speech on his behalf. All of the juniors spoke well as they received their awards; thanking their coaches, awards sponsor and their parents for running them out to golf every Sunday morning. However Sophie Parker took the choccies for her speech when she simply thanked Dad for being Dad! On hand to assist with the presentations was sponsor Derek Stanton from Lake Grace Home Improvements. Junior Golf Coordinator Gary Frost thanked Derek and Kristie for their sponsorship and also Jeanette Bennett who provides the weekly Rhynie Award. He also

extended his gratitude to Marcus Owen and Steve Hunt for their assistance with coaching; Peter Hudson (Lake Grace Tyre power) and South Pacific (Cummins Engines) for assisting with sponsorship for the annual Coaching Clinic and to Terri Parker who was always available to help out with catering for the Juniors. Gary thanked the Juniors for supporting the Club throughout the year and said that he looked forward to seeing them and their mates in 2013.

This year has been a mixed bag for the girls. We started off with a very promising season – winning three and drawing three of our games in the first round. We were playing a new style of ball game (introduced by Darren) and were connecting well as a team. On the seventh round we had a bye along with another three weeks off due to carnivals and a general bye. From there we appeared to go downhill. We seemed to lose commitment and momentum due to injuries, holiday travels and pregnancies (congratulations to Donna and Karissa). Well done to those girls who fought the season out and thanks to the many last minute fill-ins to help us get a team together for some of the games. Also, an awesome effort from Donna with her first year in goals. I think the great goalie skills runs in the family! Our award winners for this year went to –

Fairest & Best - Jackie McGlinn

R/Up Fairest & Best - Karissa Pelham

Most Consistent - Naomi Duckworth

Most Improved - Nikki Anderton

Coaches Award - Beth Curtin

Huge thanks to our super coach for this year – Darren Clifford. He provided us with a wealth of new hockey knowledge and positive support. We would also like to express our gratitude to Brendon Desmond for his work behind the scene in marking our oval. Thanks to Christine for her continuous support in umpiring. And well done to the juniors for making the Grand Final and putting in a huge effort to score a goal against Borden. Well done Janine for your commitment to the kids – you should be proud of your efforts and patience! We will hold our AGM in February, so please keep it in mind and come along to show your support and playing interest. We are a friendly, social bunch and welcome any new players with open arms. On Saturday night we held our combined hockey / netball windup. Michelle did a great job organizing a progressive dinner filled with lots of fun and laughter. Thanks to Michelle’s mum for driving the bus and the ladies that opened up their houses for our pit stops. Looking forward to next year and here’s hoping for a turn in the Grand Final. Lake Grace Golf Club celebrated their season with their end of year dinner at the club house on Friday 21st September. More than 30 braved the elements to enjoy an evening at the clubhouse with fine company and great food while wondering if the gale force winds were going to take the roof. The evening was enjoyed by all, particularly as the roof did stay on. Well done to Terri Parker for creating such a festive atmosphere with her creative decorating and to the Catholic Ladies and their trusty male sidekicks for providing such a wonderful meal. Father Gayan was invited to say Grace but deferred to three young ladies; Elle and Marcia Trevenen and Beth Curtin who performed a more modern upbeat version (with some finger clicking from the audience) to a hearty round of applause. President Chad Stanton and Captain Matthew Spurr presented the awards to the winners and runners-up of the various Grades. Also presented were the eclectics and longest drives. Winning the longest drive for the men was Mark Seaman, while Derek Stanton took out the men’s eclectic. Helen Hunt had a clean sweep for the women, winning not only the longest drive but also the eclectic. Club Champion Gary Frost spoke of how gratifying it was to see an influx of new and younger players joining the club during the 2012 season and that these players were important for the Club’s future. The annual fine session was conducted during the evening with funds raised going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Lake Grace Basketball Association season 2012/13 is upon us again.

Senior nominations are due to the Secretary at [email protected] by Friday 12th October. The Senior season will commence on Tuesday 23rd October with a break over Christmas and the January holidays and finals will be completed by end of February.

The Junior season will commence on Tuesday 16th October. Any interested players should contact Diedre Trevenen on 9865 1115 as she will be arranging the junior teams. Sub juniors will start at 4pm, U13 at 5pm and U16 at 6pm. Please try to come half an hour before your game to meet your coach and team.

This year's committee is Lisa Chapman, Athol Kennedy, Danielle Robertson, Missy Clifford, Diedre Trevenen, Caryn Kirk, Fiona Chatfield and Gaillene Kennedy. Please contact any of these people if you are interested in playing this season.

Just a quick reminder that if you want to use the backboards at the courts when they are swung

away please contact a committee member or the Shire to arrange to pull the boards out. They have a locking pin which need the correct tool to unlock. The arms bend if you just force them out which happened last year and seems to have happened again already. The Shire staff are fixing the broken one at the moment so please be patient.
