International House/Division of Student Affairs sn/July 2016 Handouts/DurhamBuses.doc Getting Around by Bus Duke Campus Duke Bus System (http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/bus_sched/index.php) This system is FREE! Anywhere on campus where the bus stops, you may get on and ride. The main lines are East-West Express, C-1 East-West Campus and C-2 East-West Central via Trent. Other buses run from different parking lots to West Campus. The East-West & East-West-Central via Trent buses run almost every five minutes during the weekdays when classes are in session, but other buses run less frequently. All schedules change during the summer and during school vacations, so be prepared. Some of the buses run late (until 3:45 am), while others only operate during the daytime. All Duke Buses can be live tracked using the TransLoc website (http://duke.transloc.com) or the free mobile app DukeMobile. Be sure to check out the LaSalle Loop (LL) bus schedule that drives by many apartments off of West Campus and then goes up to Kroger Food Store on Hillsborough Road. Operates Monday – Fridays only (http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/bus_sched/LL_lasalle_loop.php). Duke Vans (919.684.2020, http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/duke_vans.php) Duke Vans is a supplemental transportation service by Duke to give safe transportation throughout the night to students and employees who live within the Duke Vans zone. To be picked up (on campus only), you just call 919-684-2020 from any phone, including emergency (blue) phones on campus, or visit http://duke.ridecell.com between 5pm and 7am. (If you live on LaSalle Loop bus line, you will be informed to take the LaSalle Bus until when it stops running. This is for Monday – Friday nights only. Saturday & Sunday nights you can take Duke Vans starting at 5pm).When entering the van you will have to present your Duke ID. If you are not sure if you live within the Duke Vans area, check online: http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/saferides.php. Getting Around the Triangle Area (Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh) Go Pass (http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/gopass/index.php) Duke provides a free local/regional bus pass to all students, and for an annual fee of $25 to staff and faculty. Spouses are not eligible. The GoPass allows for unlimited rides on GoDurham (DATA), Triangle Transit, GoRaleigh (Capital Area Transit) and Cary's transit service (C-Tran), at no charge. You must present your Duke ID as well as GoPass to the bus driver. Go to Duke Parking and Transportation Offices to obtain a GoPass. IMPORTANT: It is illegal to sell your GoPass or give it to another individual to use. It is also illegal to sell your Duke Parking permit to another person after purchasing it in your name. Robertson Shuttle (http://www.gotriangle.org/maps-and-schedules#1759) During the academic year (late August – early May) there is a shuttle bus running directly between Duke West Campus and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (Morehead Planetarium) seven days a week. There are no stops between the two locations. The service is free for all holders of a Duke GoPass. Otherwise the cost is $2.25 one way. There is limited or no service over holidays and breaks, so check ahead. You can live track the Robertson Shuttle here: http://triangle.transloc.com/m/route/4003742. If the Robertson Shuttle does not run, you can take the GoDurham/DATA bus 400 or 405 to Chapel Hill from Erwin Road or the main bus station downtown. The Bull City Connector (BBC, http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/bull_city.php) A fare-free route from Duke to Golden Belt, including Ninth Street and Downtown Durham. Operating every 17 minutes from 6:30am to 9pm, Monday – Friday and every 25 minutes 10am to 9pm on Saturdays. Bus does not run on Sundays or holidays. The bus is also a good way to get to know Durham. Just hop on it and stay on it for one loop through downtown Durham (http://www.bullcityconnector.org). Durham City Bus System GoDurham (formerly DATA, http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/city_regional.php) Use the Durham City Bus System (officially known as GoDurham, formerly called Durham Area Transit Authority or DATA) if you need to go anywhere in Durham. Buses say “GoDurham” or "DATA" on the side. These buses travel from the outer limits of town to downtown and generally all arrive downtown at the same time, which makes it very easy to transfer. Buses run about every 30 minutes during weekdays, and less often nights and on weekends. Check your bus schedule carefully (http://godurhamtransit.org/maps-and-schedules and http://triangle.transloc.com/t/). Sometimes buses do not take the exact same route on both directions, but drive loops. Bicycles are permitted on all GoDurham buses. – It costs $1 to ride each way or $2 for a day pass (unless you have a GoPass). You must have this exact amount in coins or single dollar bill. The bus driver cannot give you change for larger dollar bills. If you ride the bus often and do not have a GoPass, you may wish to purchase a 31-day pass for $36. Can be tracked using the Transloc website (http://triangle.transloc.com/), the mobile app TransLoc, or text messaging using a bus stop’s ID number (on the bus stops or online) and texting “GOLIVE [stop code]” to 41411 (see http://triangle.transloc.com/info/mobile). GoTriangle (formerly Triangle Transit Authority or TTA, http://gotriangle.org) If you need to go to Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham Technical Community College, or the RDU airport, GoTriangle is the cheapest way to go. GoTriangle buses leave every half-hour during rush hour and every hour during the middle of the day. As of 2015, a trip costs $2.25 one-way for a regular fare or $3 on express buses. These buses run Monday-Saturday/some Sunday from around 5:30 a.m. to ca. 10:00 p.m. These buses accept $1.00 and $5.00 bills in addition to coins. Track GoTriangle buses at http://triangle.transloc.com/ or using the mobile app TransLoc. To go to RDU Airport (http://www.gotriangle.org/maps-and-schedules --> Raleigh-Airport-RTC #100) or https://www.rdu.com/ground-transportation/bus-and-rail-service/) You can take the Triangle Transit Authority bus. Get on the 400 bus in front of Duke Hospital and go to the Durham Bus Station. Transfer to the 700 bus to the RTP Bus Center. From RTP, take the 100 bus to RDU airport. It will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to the airport from Duke, so plan your time wisely. This trip costs $4.50 one-way.
