Jay MannTiTle: Director of information servicesCompany: Madison School Districtage: 46years in The indusTry: 29eduCaTion: Master’s degree in English

literature, Arizona State University

What was your first computer? Atari 800XL (Technically, I owned a Timex Sinclair prior to the Atari, but the membrane keyboard kept me from accomplishing much with it.)What initially brought you to the IT field? Aptitude and passion for technologyWhat do you believe is your biggest

accomplishment in IT? Developing outstanding teams focused on customer service, a systems approach and innovative solutionsWhat has surprised you the most about technology development during your career? Nearly ubiquitous connectivity in major cities, and the combination of miniaturization and wireless telecommunications breakthroughs allowing everything from phone calls and Web searches to streaming video on the goHow do you balance privacy and security when it comes to employee/employer data? Primarily by limiting who has access.

We also put additional measures in place to meet Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act considerations for students. What is the biggest threat to your IT infrastructure? Working in a school district, the biggest threats are the 6,000 wonderful students who can just as easily function as 6,000 disgruntled employees. What is the biggest challenge in linking multiple devices to your network? The desire for BYOD (bring your own device)What has been the greatest help to IT in the past five years? The proliferation of cloud-hosted software solutionsWhat is the one thing you would like to

have in IT that doesn’t exist today that would make your job easier or more fun? Toss-up between true drag-and-drop programming and a robot duplicate to attend meetings for meWhere do you look when trying to bring in new IT talent? Often I look for talented people who have entered the IT field through a nontraditional path, especially if they have a background or degree in another field. What is the one question you hear most from people in your company or organization? “Can I have an iPad?”What question do you wish you’d never get asked again? “Can I have an iPad?”

Kim ThomasTiTle: Technology integration specialistCompany: Madison School Districtage: 57years in The indusTry: 19eduCaTion: Associate of Arts in paralegal

studies; bachelor’s degree in education; master’s degree in education technology

What was your first computer? Apple IIeWhat initially brought you to the ed tech field? During my first year teaching in the Glendale Elementary School District, we were part of a large Eisenhower grant that ran over three years. From the onset, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about how I could use it with my students. By the end of the first year of the grant, I started on my master’s degree. What do you say is your biggest accomplishment in the area of technology integration? Helping teachers to

understand and use technology effective in their teaching and with their students would be at the top of the list. This is being done through the Classroom Application of Technology, New Incentive Program. Through CATNIP, teachers take technology classes (covering applications, approaches and what is new) to earn technology for their classroom. What is your biggest challenge as a technology integration specialist? Time to work with teachers during the school day, both for teaching the teachers and working in their classroom. There is one more challenge: keeping up with all the aspects of technology!Where do you look when searching for new ideas? Google+ and blogs provide wonderful resources from other people in my field from around the world. I also rely on Diigo to see what others are bookmarking on particular topics.

Jay Mann and Kim Thomas help keep the Madison School District operating as a top performer. This dynamic duo was instrumental in the district’s recognition for outstanding use of technology in education, with both the 2008 Golden Bell Award from the Arizona School Board Association and the 2010 Magna Award from the National School Board Association.

Steve PhillipsTiTle: Senior vice president and CIOCompany: Avnet Inc.age: 49years in The indusTry: 20eduCaTion: Bachelor’s degree in electronic

engineering, specializing in computers and data communications, Essex University; postgraduate diploma in management studies, Thames Valley University

What was your first computer? When I was 19, I bought a Sinclair Spectrum. I programmed a personal financial management program on it in Basic. What initially brought you to the IT field? I worked as an engineer for a company when they were installing their first IT system, and I volunteered to help. What do you believe is your biggest accomplishment in IT? Providing a work environment for my team to deliver IT solutions that help Avnet win in the marketplace. What has surprised you the most about technology development during your career? The rate of innovation and change is continuously increasing. For me, that rapid rate of change makes IT exciting. How do you balance privacy and security when it comes to employee/employer data? We have extensive controls to respect the privacy of our employees’ personal data. For example, we have a “bring your own device” policy for smartphones and

tablets, and we use a mobile device management solution that separates company data from personal data on those devices. What is the biggest challenge in linking multiple devices to your network? We have thousands of devices connecting to our network every day, and we need to safeguard those devices from possibly causing any operational problems that could affect our customers and partners. What has been the greatest help to IT in the past five years? The incredible advances made with smartphones and wireless data networking means many of us are now always “connected” — in our personal lives as well as our professional lives. What is the one thing you would like to have in IT that doesn’t exist today that would make your job easier or more fun? I would love to have my own “easy” button. That way, we could implement complex IT projects at the touch of a button — or even change projects on the fly during the implementation if the requirements were altered.Where do you look when trying to bring in new IT talent? We ask our employees if they have recommendations, and we also work closely with Arizona’s universities and community colleges. What is the one question you hear most from people in your company or organization? Up until a few months ago, it used to be “Why can’t I have a Mac?” While the vast majority of our PCs are still Windows laptops, we now provide Apple MacBooks upon approval. What question do you wish you’d never get asked again? What keeps you awake at night?

Steve Phillips’ resume includes executive IT posts at Gateway, Memec and now Avnet. A past chairman of the Arizona Technology Council, he also has been recognized nationally as a Computerworld Premier 100 IT Leader.

administration

What was your first computer? IBM-compatible 386What do you believe is your biggest accomplishment in IT? Bridging the gap between “security is an ivory tower” to “security is approachable to all.”What has surprised you the most about technology development during your career? The availability and ease of access to technologies to the vast majority of people, regardless of socio-economic backgroundHow do you balance privacy and security when it comes to employee/employer data? Overall, there is no balance. I have seen privacy abuse by organizations and individuals, which should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law — equivalent to a home invasion. What is the biggest threat to your IT

infrastructure? People and ignoranceWhat is the biggest challenge in linking multiple devices to your network? Proprietary software (closed-in as opposed to open-source)What has been the greatest help to IT in the past five years? Portability of devicesWhat is the one thing you would like to have in IT that doesn’t exist today that would make your job easier or more fun? 100 percent compatibility with all platforms, software, and communications, so it doesn’t matter if you’re a PC, Mac, Android or Linux/Unix fan. Complete freedom to use any technology, anywhere, at any point in time. What do you look for in new IT talent? Can this person get along with others, all other things being equal (skill set, education, etc.)?What is the one question you hear most from people in your company or organization? “Can you grant me access to (long list of systems, applications, services, etc.)?”What question do you wish you’d never get asked again? “Why do we need security?”
