Gr oovy!: t he '70s By: Ryder DyeAh the 1970s, a time of no internet, nobody had cell phones, and disco music was all the rave. Depending on who you ask, these were the simpler times. Let's take a trip back to our very own McDonald High School from the 1970s.

When we look at old yearbooks, it takes us on a journey of crazy hairstyles, clubs and organizations that we no longer have, very successful athletic programs, and a time period when everyone who needed contacts had to wear glasses because contacts were difficult to come by. This time period also showed some ridiculous choices that you wouldn't see on anything outside of a Halloween costume, like bell bottom jeans, disco clothing, and flowered pant-suits.

Throughout the '70s, McDonald had a "Swan Team", which was a team of girls that put together dances and performances that all took place in the pool by the weight room. Our ladies had other groups such as the "Girls Athletic Association" and the "Ser-Fri-Leas ". Just like our Lip Sync, in the '70s our students put on a variety show which was a more music-based performance show that had lots of comedy skits, music acts, and very bright and colorful costumes.

Our athletic department was extremely successful in football and basketball. In football, our guys racked up a record of 47-33-5 over the stretch of the decade being named "State Champions" by the AP Poll in 1970 and finishing No. 1 in the state in 1975. Our basketball team was able to compile a nice handful of victories over the stretch of time and adding a couple league titles into the mix such as a record breaking season in 1975 going 14-4.

Sophomores Dominic Carkido and Greg Merdich both agreed that the style of the time like the clothing and wild hair stood out the most for them because of how ridiculous they seem compared to today's style. Dom went on to add, "It's crazy seeing how much the school has changed in 40 years and what was popular then, to what is popular now"

Overall, it was a successful time period for the students at McDonald. This school has seen it all, whether it's fashion styles of the era, scholars in academics and athletics, or just another solid day at McDonald.

The Future is Waiting.... By Ethan O'ConnellCollege, whether a "painful truth" you've been avoiding or a "fun adventure" you can't wait to take part in, the experience

is one many will have. One way to make the most of the College Experience is taking part in college visits.

College visits are when juniors or seniors talk to a representative at MHS from a college about what their school offers. This allows students an opportunity to look into the courses they may pursue when they leave high school. This opportunity is valuable and it shouldn't be wasted.

Guidance counselor Mrs. Bosheff said, "The feel for a college helps students realize what works for them. They see what the schools have to offer and what they like. When a kid goes on a campus they know when they really fit in, and when they don't."

Seniors and Juniors are also provided three days to visit college campuses, and see what the atmosphere is like. These opportunities help students who may not have a clear picture on what college they want to attend. This allows them to make that picture a little bit clearer on what direction they want to go in.

When they decide to go on these campuses, it is up to the student, as long as they bring back a signed note from campus or a parking ticket with a time stamp to prove that they were there. Students must sign up online to let the colleges know to make accommodations for them.

Keep in mind, even if someone goes to a college campus or goes to listen to a representative, it is in no way a commitment to that college. This is just a review program that juniors and seniors are allowed to take part in to scope out their possibilities. So students shouldn't be afraid of going to these places to find out what works for them.

Go to Mrs. Bosheff's webpage (the link below) if you want to know more dates, and what colleges are planning on visiting. https://sites.google.com/mcdonald.k12.oh.us/tracy-bosheff/guidance-calendar

Halloween started as a festival where people would dress up and have a bonfire. The day marked the ending of summer and the beginning of the dark and cold fall and winter. People thought that this day was when demons would go and haunt people. It also started as the name "All Hallow's Eve" and evolved into the more modern term "Halloween".

Halloween in McDonald is always something you don't want to miss, as it is most known for the time to get candy. Fire trucks ride around town to pass out candy while kids go door to door saying the original catch phrase, "Trick or Treat". 7th grader Nathan Coots said, "Usually when we get into high school most kids stop trick or treating. But now we do things we are more interested in like haunted houses and haunted hayrides."

When asked what her favorite things she misses about Halloween, Devon Sierra said, "Any candy was good when you were younger. My favorite was KitKats and Carmel Apple Suckers. And definitely the best place to go in McDonald is Parkside."

After the two hours of trick or treating there is a bonfire and costume contest down at the pavilion. Children of all ages go down in their best costumes to be judged and they could win prizes. "All the girls usually did princesses and fairies and the boys would usually dress as superheros," said Sierra.

This year in the village, Girl Scout Troop 80172 is hosting, with the help of the village, a first annual Pumpkin Walk. This is where anyone can bring down their pumpkins to be illuminated and presented so everyone can see them. Bring down your carved pumpkins or come and see them at Ramsay Pavilion in Woodland Park on October 27th from 7-9pm.

Every year in the grade school they have a Halloween parade where the students dress up in their costumes and march around town with the band leading to the traditional song "Thriller". This was always something that all the students looked forward to because you usually played Halloween games, ate candy and food, and could dress up. Now that we are in the high school, we don't do a lot of these things anymore. But this does not mean we don't like Halloween. It is a time where everyone can just have fun!

The Marching Band Under The SeaBy: Elise McMaster

The Halloween show this year is themed after SpongeBob SquarePants and is set to happen at the home game tonight. This themed halftime show is one of the highlights of the year as lots of people in and out of the band are looking forward to this performance.

Leanna Batchelder said, "I really like SpongeBob. I used to watch it all the time so doing it for a halftime show is going to be really fun." Seeing the band getting to add new themed songs, props, and costumes just adds to the fun of the season.

The band has been looking forward to this show all year. Mr. Anthony said, "It's going to be a great show. We have wanted to do this show for a couple years now, so we are pretty excited to be doing it this year."

In past years, the band has done songs including "Thriller", "Ghostbusters", "This is Halloween", and "The Black Parade". This year, the band decided that they would be doing a SpongeBob themed Halloween halftime show. The songs include the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song, "Jellyfish Jam", and "Sweet Victory". There will also be small interludes of the "Goofy Goober Rock" and the "Electric Zoo" song.

All the band members dress up for this show in their own Halloween costumes. However, the majorettes will all be wearing themed costumes to go along with the theme of the show as the always do. Like in the past, we have had the majorettes dress as zombies and they used coffin props in their "Thriller" show.

The majorettes this year will be wearing SpongeBob and Patrick costumes to go along with this year's theme. Be on the look out for the flag line. This year they are making their own flag designs to resemble the flowers in the sky seen in SpongeBob. They have taken old blue flags they had laying around and added cut-out flower designs to the flags to get the look they wanted.

Disney's Halloweentow n is the stor y of Marnie, a girl who is interested in the weird and supernatural. One night , after a visit from their Grandmother Aggie, played by the late Debbie Reynolds, Marnie and her siblings decide to follow their grandmother all the way to Halloweentow n. In Halloweentow n, they f ind out that they come from a family of w itches. They also f ind out that they are involved in a warlock's evil plan to take over the mor tal world and that they must stop it.

When you hear "Disney Channel Or iginal Movie", what is the f irst thing you think of? You may have thought of movies like High School Musical, Descendants, Teen Beach Movie, and so on. That is, if you' re not old enough to remember Halloweentow n. Welcome to Old Disney, where the movies have that typical Disney cheesiness, but not the cr inginess of cer tain cur rent Disney Channel Movies (I'm talking to you, Freaky Fr iday).

When I watched this movie, the one thing I realized was that this wasn' t like all the other or iginal movies. The plot wasn' t cliché overall, except par t s of the beginning, and there was almost no focus on romance.

Something that the movie didn' t do a good job of was resolving some of the movie's minor issues. For instance, there is an intense scene where a skeleton taxi cab dr iver t r ies to kidnap Marnie's brother but gets chased away. We see him again at the end of the movie and it appears that all is forgotten.

Another example is the "romance" between Marnie and a goblin named Luke. That sub-plot barely got any focus at all in this movie.

Overall, I thought this movie was t ruly int r iguing and deserved it s sequel, which I have not seen yet. If you believed that the or iginal movie left you quest ioning a lot , then the movie's three sequels provide plenty of room for explanat ions. Besides all that , I'd say that if are planning to watch Halloween movies now , then this movie deserves a place on your list.

    Top 5 Halloween Costumes

    By: Br i Callow

    1. Bob Ross- With this costume there is no mistakes, just happy litt le accidents! If this isn't your style maybe being one of his painting is a better option. Either way you will rule the streets with this costume.

    2. Thanos- You can become the mad titan himself this Halloween season. Kids will be bowing down to you in this costume. Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility.

    3. For t nit e Sk ins- That 's right! This year you can actually be a Fortnite Skin. Be sure to practice your Fortnite dance moves because you will be flossing through the streets in this costume.

    4. Ghost bust er - Everyone knows who they are gonna call while you are wearing this classic costume. For best use, grab a group of people (preferably ones that you know) and dress up together.

    5. Ghost - This costume is not the most exciting, but sometimes people get busy and I understand that. So I'm here to let you know that it 's okay to just throw a sheet with two eye holes on and go trick or treating. If it worked for Charlie Brown, it should work for you.

    Edi t o r i a l : NO Mor e Test i ng

by Cer i na Th or neSchools should no longer need the stress of school testing. As a high school student, I

find it stressful enough already to turn in homework, study, go to work, and prepare for college in the future. The state claims they want to expand our education, but compress it into a test that is just unnecessary, and doesn't grow our education.

Innovation and creativity can be stifled when teachers are required to teach to a state test and students find themselves trapped in a loop of things that are sometimes difficult to appreciate. We should get rid of state testing, and focus more on our education for ourself rather than learning the standards for state test.
