Test Corrections and Fill out your Learning Log - Pg. 35
• I got #_____ wrong because I thought ____. ____ is the correct answer because_____.
** Do 5 total. If you got less than 5 wrong then justify 5 of your answers explaining why they are the correct answer.
Mini Investigation: Pg. 35
• Go to class website• Open up the document: Anatomy: Lesson 68- Mini Investigation-2/13-2/14• Answer the questions on pg. 35
Explain the anatomy and physiology of the spinal cord. Predict the consequences of spinal cord injuries.
Directions1. Read each case card.2. Record on your Doctor
Notebook.3. Use the “Spinal Cord
Responsibilities” sheet to make a hypothesis: where was this person injured?
4. Answer the analysis questions.

Learning New Material
Expectations
1. One person speaks at a time
2. Think and write actively
3. You are a professional student!
What is the physiology of the spinal cord?
• Communicates between brain and the rest of the body
• AKA connection between brain and peripheral nervous system
• Can independently control some basic reflexes
How do you think the spinal cord is protected?
Guess 1 Guess 2
How is the spinal cord protected?
1. 33 bones called vertebrae, stacked on top of each other and separated by discs2. 3 layers of tissue called meninges
How is the spinal cord protected?
3. Surrounded by Cerebrospinal Spinal Fluid (CSF), which provides support and nutrients

What can go wrong with the spinal cord?
• Tetraplegia or quadriplegia is paralysis of the arms and legs– This involves both sensory
and motor deficits– Caused by damage to
spinal cord at a high level (C1 – C7)
• Paraplegia is paralysis of the legs– Damage to any vertebrae
below c7
Go Back to the Spinal Cord Diagram:What do the different sections of the
spinal cord do?
• Cervical-• Thoracic-• Lumbar-• Sacral-
• Cervical- sustains vitals (breathing, heart rate) and upper body movement
• Thoracic- movement of the trunk
• Lumbar- movement of legs
• Sacral- genital functioning, bowel and bladder activity

Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
Directions: Label the section of the spinal cord.
1.Cervical
2.Thoracic
3.Sacral4.Lumbar
Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
A young man has suffered a spinal cord injury and is having difficulty breathing. He cannot feel or move his legs, meaning he may be quadriplegic. Where is he most likely injured?
A.C4B.T11C.L2D.S1
Because the lumbar section of the spinal cord has to do with legs
Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
(Level 4) What does it mean to be quadriplegic?
Quadriplegic means that you are paralyzed (can’t feel or move) from the waist down. Both legs don’t work.
Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
(Level 4) How is the spinal cord protected?
The spinal cord is protected only by the vertebrae, or the muscles.
