Get ready for something more.
I know you’re getting a lot of college brochures in the mail. When I was in high school, I did too. And sometimes, it felt like everyone was saying the same thing.
Here’s the thing.
Duquesne really is different. And I love it.
I want to tell you why Duquesne was the right choice for me. And it might just be the right choice for you, too.
An experience that will define you.

this campus
My senior year of high school, I applied to a lot of schools. Nearly a dozen. I wanted to keep my options open.
But as soon as I stepped foot on Duquesne’s campus for a tour, my decision was made. I knew this would be my college home.
Duquesne is this beautiful campus on a hill, overlooking downtown Pittsburgh, South Side and one of the city’s three rivers. And if you take a five-minute walk down the hill (we call it the Bluff), you’re in the middle of everything the city has to offer.
A location that will inspire you.

Some extra help with freshman year.Students who apply to Duquesne and show potential but don’t meet requirements for direct admission may be invited to enroll in the Gussin Spiritan Division. This highly successful first-year program has helped hundreds of students transition from high school to college with personal guidance and learning assistance.

Your education goes beyond the syllabus.
Because learning at Duquesne happens everywhere.
You can be engaged in your field from the moment you step on campus. Whether it’s hands-on research, patient interaction or teaching local students, there are opportunities in all of Duquesne’s programs.
My Duquesne education took me to Pope Francis’ papal visit in Philadelphia, where I had full press credentials and worked with three other students to take hundreds of hours of footage. I edited the video—along with 30 interviews and thousands of photos—into a documentary that was screened on campus with Pittsburgh’s Bishop Zubik in attendance.
It was great real-world experience and the opportunity of a lifetime!

Duquesne has given me so many opportunities to spread my wings. And one of my favorites has to be the Spring Breakaway course that took me to Paris, France.
With Spring Breakaway classes, you take a course at Duquesne throughout the spring semester, and you travel with your class—including your professor—over spring break.
My class was Travel Writing, so we read and discussed travel essays when we were on campus, and practiced writing, too. Then when we were in Paris, we kept a daily journal that we turned into an extended travel journal when we were back in Pittsburgh.
It was très magnifique!
My Paris Must-Sees:
• The Eiffel Tower (obviously!)
• The Louvre
• The Arc de Triomphe
• An authentic boulangerie for a real Parisian croissant

What it Means
22
Spiritus est Qui vivificat. It is the Spirit Who gives life.
ALL ARE WELCOME
HERE.
We’re a Catholic
university, so faith
plays an important
role here. And we
have a very broad
and diverse group of
students who nurture
mind, heart and spirit
in different ways.
A Catholic education in the Spiritan tradition. It’s what we do here. But what does it really mean?
You’ll see the Spiritan tradition alive on campus
and beyond in the way we treat one another, the
way we learn and in how we view the world.
Who we are today has a lot to do with who
we were yesterday. Founded in 1878 to serve
Pittsburgh’s immigrant population, Duquesne
was built on a core set of values that guide us even
now. We believe in building community, in having
a global vision, in promoting high academic
standards, and in a commitment to service.
And first and foremost, everyone at Duquesne is
here to make sure you succeed, academically and
throughout life.
23
The spirit we share with the world.
Serving others is part of the Spiritan
way. Every student gets involved
outside the classroom. There’s
research with real-world impact.
Cooperative projects. Internships.
Community-engaged learning.
And so much more.
Join up with others and get out into the world.

Connect to meaningful service.
Here, you’ll have the power to make the world a better place.Your Duquesne education could take you:
I’ve had a lot opportunities to feel like I’m making a difference for people right here in the Pittsburgh region.
As an event chair for my sorority’s annual Make-a-Wish Pageant, I’ve helped raise tens of thousands of dollars to help regional kids have their wishes granted.
And freshman year, through one of my core curriculum classes, I worked with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council to help non-native English speakers master the language.
• To underserved communities to
administer free vaccinations
• To Africa to deliver medical
supplies and provide care
• Into Pittsburgh’s rivers to monitor
water quality
• To Pittsburgh companies to help
develop marketing plans
• To Florida to work alongside
migrant workers
• To Appalachia to help restore
homes in disrepair

Is it Duquesneable?
No matter what you do at
Duquesne, you’ll be driven
by a fundamental question:
That means being willing to take risks.
Being open to all ideas and all people.
Doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching.
Doing more for others and for the world.
Thinking big in every small moment.
And it’ll make a lot more
sense once you get here.

Test-Optional Admission for Business, Liberal Arts, and Music Applicants
Our research has shown that there is a group of applicants for whom the SAT or ACT may not be a fair predictor of academic success based upon their motivations and high school academic accomplishments. If you do not have SAT or ACT scores, or believe your scores do not reflect your academic achievement and ability to be successful at Duquesne, you may choose to apply as a test-optional candidate. You must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 within a college preparatory curriculum to be considered for admission. Visit duq.edu/test-optional for complete details.
More information, including an application checklist, minimum standardized test scores, and deadlines, can be found at duq.edu/apply
