William M. Tweed“Boss Tweed”

(1823–78) American politician 1857- he was an important figure in the TAMMANY SOCIETY the

Democratic political machine in New York City. During the next 14 years he increased his power.

Formed the so-called Tweed Ring within the Tammany Society. The ring openly bought votes, encouraged judicial corruption, and controlled city politics; estimates of the amount of money the city lost to the ring range from $30 million to $200 million.

The downfall of the ring did not come until 1871, when the New York Times published an exposé based on data provided by a county bookkeeper.

In 1874 Tweed was convicted of official embezzlement … served one year and on his release in 1875 was rearrested on other charges and returned to prison… escaped in 1875, but was caught in Spain and again imprisoned… died in New York City on April 12, 1878.
