Jonny Bates is Global Lingo’s North American Director of Sales and heads our Chicago office. He’s recently moved from Singapore so he’s getting to the know the city more.

At the beginning of 2017, I was lucky enough to be offered the chance to move from Singapore, where I had spent the last two years leading our Asia Pacific business, to head up our new US office in Chicago. Global Lingo has delivered significant profitable growth over recent years and I am really looking forward to the opportunity of developing our presence in the United States and the wider Americas. After a few months waiting to secure a visa, I am now on the ground here. And what an experience it has been so far.

Historically famous for Jazz, Al Capone, and most importantly deep-dish pizza, the city of Chicago has more recently hit the headlines due to one of its two baseball teams, the Cubs, overcoming 108 years of hurt and once again being crowned World Champions.

The reasons why we chose Chicago as our American base were twofold. Firstly, it is a thriving business centre and truly a city of the world. Major global organisations, such as McDonalds, Boeing, Kraft & Exelon, to name but a few, are headquartered here; making it a key site for the localization and wider language services industry.

Secondly, Chicago is a major hub for both international and Intracontinental travel and its position in the Central time-zone assists in bridging the gap between East and West coasts, helping us service our clients across the entire United States.

So, what are my first impressions? Well, Chicago is quite simply an incredible city! There is a plethora of things going on at this time of year, with festivals galore. Whether you like food, drink, arts, architecture, sports or even just lying on a beach (yes Chicago has beaches!), then the city has something to offer you.

I’m told that in colder months things change, when what has repeatedly been described to me as a brutal winter takes hold. At that point, seasoned Chicagoans do the smart thing and mimic the behaviour of the American Chipmunk, choosing to hibernate until Spring!

The architecture is also fascinating in Chicago. The skyscraper was invented here and through the years Chicago has been home to the World’s tallest building title on multiple occasions. Currently though the former record holder Sears Tower, now re-branded as Willis Tower, languishes down in 16th place at just 108 floors and 442m high. With Batman’s Gotham city set here, and Donald Trump building his biggest tower here riverside at the city’s centre point, it’s certainly never a dull moment as you wander the streets and gaze around.

One thing is for sure – it’s a great city for both business and pleasure, and Global Lingo certainly plans on expanding our base here to offer high quality translation, transcription and minute-taking services to many new clients across the USA and the wider Americas, while enabling our other global clients the benefits of this extended global footprint and 24/7 support.

Profile: Rosa Andujar, Project ManagerHi there! My name is Rosa Andujar and I am one of the Project Managers at Global Lingo.

My love of languages brought me to Global Lingo and being Spanish my other passion is Salsa dancing! I am hoping to encourage my colleagues to get out there on the dance floor! I love socialising and dancing with my friends.

In addition, I am an animal lover and have a little French bulldog Chico. He waits for me every day for a relaxing walk after work and sometimes, if he is good, he comes into the office to see everybody.

As you can see, I never get bored, but then who would living in London!

Wedding bells around the world

Congo: Are You Serious?

While most about-to-be marrieds brim with excitement and anticipation, Congolese brides and grooms must keep their happiness in check — during their entire wedding day, from ceremony to reception, the two are not allowed to smile. If they do, it would mean they weren’t serious about marriage.

China: Bullseye!Let’s hope the groom remembers to remove the arrowheads. In China, a prospective husband will shoot his bride with a bow and arrow several times then collects the arrows and breaks them during the ceremony, to ensure their love lasts forever. What would Cupid do?

Jamaica: Everyone’s a CriticVillagers line up in the street to look at the bride. It’s customary for them to call out negative comments if her appearance isn’t up to snuff. If the majority is critical, she goes home and makes a second try at looking good.

Czechoslovakia: Oh, Baby! Before the ceremony, an infant is placed on the couple’s bed to bless and enhance their fertility. Once they’ve wed, guests shower them with rice, peas or lentils to also promote fertility.

Venezuela: Bride and Groom Go MIADon’t wait until the reception’s end to chat up a Venezuelan bride and groom — they could be long gone. It’s good luck for the newlyweds to sneak away before the party’s over without getting caught; it’s also good luck for whichever guests catches on that they’re gone.

French Polynesia: Stepping Stone

On the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia, once the wedding has come to an end the relatives of the bride lay side-by-side face down on the ground whilst the bride and groom walk over them like a human rug. Just, ouch.

Germany: Redefining TeamworkIn Germany, newlyweds must instantly put their bond to the test by working together to saw a log in half in front of all their guests. The act is intended to showcase the bride and groom’s ability to work together and face the obstacles that may come throughout their marriage.

Romania: “Bride-Napping”Guests work together to “abduct” the bride, whisking her away to an undisclosed location and demanding a “ransom” from the groom. Typical requests? A few bottles of alcohol, or — for those looking to really make the groom sweat — singing a love song in front of the entire party!

Sweden: Hope You’re Not the Jealous Type

In Sweden, whenever the bride leaves the table, all the ladies at the reception are free to steal a kiss from the groom! Sweden keeps the tradition gender-neutral so whenever the groom leaves the room, all surrounding gentleman are free to plant a peck on the bride.
