OMKEME PRIST KERPILE, 33 STUDENT, NEWCASTLE I regularly go to The Gate to eat because they have a good selection of restaurants and food from all over the world. I like ZaZa Bazaar in particular because I can choose from all sorts of food. You can eat as much as you want so it’s really good value for money.

SUSAN TEOH, 24, STUDENT, NEWBRIDGE STREETI love Japanese food so I usually go to Osaka on Grey Street. They have a great variety of dishes; everything from traditional dishes to all kinds of sushi. Their fish is the best because it’s really fresh, which makes for a great taste.

KEEP DANCING

Cabaret club Boulevard promises the fright of your life in the build-up to Hallowe’en with its new show

A Nightmare On Churchill Street. The show, which runs until November 1, is led by female impersonator Betty Legs Diamond, hostess and DJ Miss Rory and the Broadway Dancers. We’re told to expect ‘spooktacular’ music and dance routines (yes, really).

National Dance Company Wales is back at Dance City with a triple bill including a long-awaited performance of the breathtaking Tuplet by the Swedish star choreographer Alexander Ekman.

Tuplet is an 18-minute tour de force made famous when Alicia Keys collaborated with Ekman on the piece for the annual New York Black Ball for HIV and AIDS in Africa in 2012. This is its first performance by a UK-based company and it’s going to cause quite a stir. For full details of the NDCWales programme, see the website.Dance City, Sept 27, £15, www.dancecity.co.uk

The race may have been run, but this year’s Great North Run Culture still has a few miles in its legs. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Great North Run Culture, Claire Morgan’s striking sculptural installation Gone With The Wind, which was first shown at the Laing Gallery in 2008, is back at the gallery.

It features a dense mass of thousands of seeds native to the race route and a lone Kittiwake gull symbolising the passage of a lone runner through crowds of competitors. Prepare to be dazzled…Laing Art Gallery, September 20-January 9 www.greatnorthrunculture.org

REMEMBERIf you haven’t yet experienced National Poetry Day - every year on the first Thursday in October - we suggest this is the year to dip in your toe with an evening of recitals at the Lit & Phil from local Red Squirrel Press poets including Tom Kelly, Ellen Phethean, and Fiona Ritchie Walker.

The theme this year is Remember, to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. The Lit & Phil programme, which begins at 7pm, promises much.Lit & Phil, October 2, free, www.litandphil.org.uk

DEAD FUNNYSteven, the protagonist in tragic-comedy Dead To Me at Northern Stage, is a believer in reason, logic and humanity, whereas his psychic co-character believes in the spirit world and that the dead are always right.

A disturbingly funny story about a man and his troubled relationship with a psychic and her spirit guide, Dead To Me explores what happens when the truth is confronted and looks at the notion that the dead are easier to deal with, which is pretty hard to argue with. The production is fresh from success at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Northern Stage, September 30-October 1, from £12 www.northernstage.co.uk

More than 25,000 people witnessed the thrills and spills of powerboat racing at the third NE1 Zapcat Grand Prix on the Tyne in August. Ahead of the event, we sent our own latter-day John Noakes, Mark Anderson, to find out if it’s as scary as it looks... “Here, this one should fit, and nobody’s been sick in it.” This was my cheery introduction to an encounter with one of the fastest, most exciting water sports around. I was being handed a helmet prior to going out on the Tyne in a Zapcat – a pocket rocket speedboat which does up to 45mph and corners like a cheetah.

The UK Zapcat National Racing

Championships was at NE1’s Newcastle City Marina and this was my chance to hurtle up and down river at what felt like terrific speed (45mph inches from the water feels a lot faster than it is).

In a straight line, the boats rise out of the water on a cushion of air and then get close to throwing you overboard as they corner, generating terrific G-force. It’s alarming at first, but after a few laps and a serious soaking I got into it, grinning like a loon as my pilot pulled wheelies in the incredibly nimble boat.

It’s fast, it’s furious and it’s a thrilling spectacle, as the thousands who turned out to see the racing will attest. I can’t wait for the Zapcats’ return.www.newcastlecitymarina.co.uk

OUT OF THE CLOSET

Dawn French gives her body parts celebrity pseudonyms. These include her bosoms, which she calls Ant and Dec because they misbehave. Her body - fat and sometimes less fat, but generally fat - seems to be a national near-obsession, but she’s very relaxed about it. Her shape will get a mention in her forthcoming solo shows at The Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre (September 26 and 27), as will reflections on her childhood in Wales, her father’s suicide when she was 19, and early fashion mistakes (hot pants when a chubby 13). The show is more monologue than stand-up, an insight into a woman who says she has always kept her true personality “locked in a cupboard under the stairs so no-one else can see it or nick it.” It seems the cupboard door is about to open.

On her early stage persona: “Our [French and long-time comedy partner Jennifer Saunders] first double act after university was called The Menopause Sisters, it was cringeworthy. The manager of the club we played later said, ‘There was no star quality about them at all’.”

On her body: “If I had been around when Reubens was painting, I would have been revered as a fabulous model. Kate Moss? She would have been the paintbrush.”

On telly: “I watch schlock telly. Things like the Kardashians. I love it. It’s my guilty pleasure.”

On gender: “Funny how women are ashamed of their inner fairy whereas men are forever proudly displaying their inner cowboy or fireman.”

On her father’s death: “[His suicide] went off like a bomb went off in our family. I still have sadness about it. Massive sadness. And I think it’s been a centre point of my life.”

On food: “Eating is a lovely thing to do. We love tasting things. You don’t get to be spherical like this without liking eating things.”

On God: “The Vicar of Dibley was a ‘love-full’ thing to do and I’ve discovered I’m a bit Quaker. Well, I’ve bobbed into a few meetings. I like respecting the god in myself and my god in me recognising the god in you. Whatever that might be...”

TOON TUNESWITH DR. MARTENS STORE MANAGER

ROSIE WARD

Rosie Ward, manager of the Dr. Martens store on Grainger Street, gets to hear an eclectic mix of music on the store’s Rocket 88 jukebox every day. With everything from old-school punk, ska and reggae to contemporary pop on the jukebox, we asked Rosie to pick a playlist. Here it is... Evil, InterpolOne of those songs I loved when it was released a couple of years ago, I think it sounds even better now.Polly, The HeartbreaksA festival anthem and an honest bit of bittersweet, heartache pop from a good-old Northern band.Welcome To Hell, Plan BThis song grabs my attention when it’s playing. Straight-talking British rap with a gospel choir is unusual, but I can really get into it.London Calling, The ClashThe classics will always put a smile on my face and this one has to be up there with the best; a true celebration of punk rock. SURVIVAL GUIDEEveryone’s going to tell you where to go and what to do when you first land in Toon, and most of them will be wrong. Here’s a survival guide you can trust…

Newcastle’s newest bars on the Quayside include the Manhattan-inspired cocktail, hot dog and DJ house Popolo, and the microbrewery smokehouse Hop and Cleaver, so that’s a good start.

For an eclectic mix of music (and people!) head to the CUT for Dragnet every Saturday night, or check out Uplifting Groove at World Headquarters.

It’s not a night out if you don’t make it to the Diamond Strip on Collingwood Street where Revolution, Madame Koo, Floritas, Perdu and Bijoux are rammed every weekend. Be warned – this is the world of Geordie Shore!

Brewery pub The Bridge Tavern serves up a top-notch Sunday roast including a proper veggie option, while The Broad Chare’s feasts have to be tasted to be believed. An end-of-term budget should just about stretch to Babucho’s two courses for £14.

Zapatista’s takeaway burritos are a perfect hangover cure, or for something more traditional head to Quay Ingredient for a fab Full English. Burger Stop provides solace in the shape of gourmet British beef burgers in glazed brioche buns, while the fantastic Desperate Dan pies at the Red House are just the ticket after a late one.

HANGOVER CURES

At a grand a year, Gold Card Membership at Livello is a must-have. It includes access to the VIP lounge, a lifts to the venue in a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce, and a bottle of Laurent Perrier on your birthday. Hic!

If you’re the betting type, try Asper’s Casino in The Gate. You might lose everything on the roll of a dice, but you’ll have fun doing it. A spending spree at Cruise will brighten your look with the latest from Dolce & Gobbana, Gucci, Vivienne Westwood and more - just ensure you leave enough for a 51-week supply of beans on toast.

CONE ABOUT TOON

ONE CONE’S INCREDIBLE JOURNEYLast year’s Freshers’ Week was a great experience for a young cone from the countryside making his first trip to a big city. This year, I can’t wait for more!

I don’t like heights, so the night I ended up on top of Grey’s Monument was one to forget. Unfortunately, if tell

you how I got up there I’d have to kill you.

One of my big passions is swimming so the night I got the chance to go to Leazes Park for a dip was pretty good.

Football is also a big passion of mine. I’ll never forget my trip to St James’ Park. I may get a game if things don’t pick up soon!

After a busy week, there’s nothing like kicking back and relaxing at NE1’s Quayside Seaside. And if you’re up to it,

you can join in the volleyball. Bliss!

Ouseburn is a hive of fantastic music, particularly at The Cluny and Tyne Bar. To chill out, Settle Down Café in the city centre is the perfect place to read a book or catch up over coffee and it hosts regular writing workshops, which is nice.

HIDDEN GEMS

The Quayside offers everything you need to reassure your folks that you’re in the right place. Grab a coffee at the Pitcher and Piano before a walk along the river. Pop over the Gateshead Millenium Bridge and take in the Sage Gateshead and Baltic, and on Sundays there’s the Quayside Market; a must for foodies, crafters, and everyone else. For a meal to impress head to Café 21 or Blackfriars - we recommend booking now for graduation season!

TAKE A BOWTAKE A BOW

LITTLE BRITTON

Jasper Britton is Henry IV in the RSC’s Henry IV Parts I and II at the Theatre Royal. The son of actor Tony Britton and younger brother of telly presenter Fern and scriptwriter Cherry, he’s a prolific stage actor and has served 20 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Here’s his take on the world…

Were you always destined for the stage? Definitely not! I didn’t originally train as an actor so I found it hard to get into the profession, but two years after meeting my first agent while working in a Chinese takeaway, I was cast in a minor role. The rest is history.

What did you do before acting? I originally trained a newsreader for the BBC World Service. It was very serious, which was tough, as I tend to get the giggles. I still wonder why I never moved up there!

I’m meeting you for the first time. How will I recognise you? At the moment I’ve got very long hair with what I’d call a medieval hair cut and a white beard. I look like Father Christmas in leather (I’m often on a motorcycle).

Did you never fancy doing daytime telly like your sister? I don’t think I’m on their radar, but if anyone from Loose Women is reading this I wouldn’t mind coming on, actually.

Do you and your old man qualify the Brittons as an ‘acting dynasty’? I suppose in our little way it does. I’m proud to say the Brittons are still churning out Shakespeare 60 years on.

What else do you do, apart from acting? I have a huge garden, which seems to keep growing! And I try to rescue harvest mice from the jaws of my cats whenever possible. I have three motorbikes in varying degrees of health and a collection of yachts. My favourite has a leaky radiator, but I’m about to win a bid on eBay which will remedy that. I also have a collection of yacths - model ones - although I may build a collection of big ones in the future. All this acting is very inconvenient!

What’s the role you really want to play? Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady as I always remember seeing my dad do it it. And I never want to play Hamlet - what a windbag!
