Facts About Head Lice

1. A head louse is a blood sucking wingless parasite with six legs.

2. Head lice is spread by head to head contact with an infested person, or may be passed around on shared combs, brushes, hats, and other personal items.

3. Anyone can get head lice. In fact, head lice love clean, healthy heads.

4. Head lice will be around as long as there are humans to act as hosts.

5. Head lice live approximately 40-50 days and go through 3 stages in their life cycle:

• Eggs (nits): the female louse lay the eggs with a special glue that cements it to the hair shaft. The eggs develop and hatch approxi-mately 10 days later.

• Nymphs (larva): Once the louse hatches it needs a human blood meal within 45 minutes to survive. In about 12 days it is an adult.

• Adults: the adult louse can lay up to 4-10 eggs per day, starting another generation of lice. The adult stage lasts about 28 days.

6. Head lice burrow their mouth parts into the scalp to feed once or more each day.

7. Head lice can live off of a human head for 24-36 hours.

8. If you have been exposed to head lice, check your head every few days for 3-4 weeks

9. The most common symptoms of head lice is itching, especially behind the ears or at the nape of the neck.

10. Head lice do not live on animals-they can only survive on humans

Traditional Head Lice Treatment

Pediculicides are shampoos containing chemical pesticides used to treat head lice. Some of the most common ones contain toxic chemical pesticides such as Pyrethrin, Permethrin, Melathion, & Lindane.
