1 3CIY: CLEAN IT YOURSELFPlace a drop sheet under the fence for easy clean up. Wear safety goggles and a dust mask, as wire filings will come loose.

SIY: SAND IT YOURSELFRemove rust & old paint from your fence using a wire brush or wire wheel drill tip. Once the majority of rust has been removed, brush off the remaining filings. For any residual rust, use a rust converter to neutralise.

PIY: PAINT IT YOURSELFApply one coat of a rust inhibiting primer. An aerosol primer works best for fences with intricate metalwork.

Once dry, apply two coats of metal paint. It is important to apply the second coat for added protection and a bolder colour.

NOT TOO QUICK A light breeze is ideal for your paint to dry. If it’s too windy your paint will dry too fast and ruin your job.

DIY: OUTDOOR AREA

1 CLEAR THE AREARemove all furniture, old hooks, plants and decorations. Ask an electrician to remove any old light fittings. Cover the area with drop sheets prior to painting.

1 CLEAN SURFACESoak the concrete path with water. Scrub it down using a concrete etcher and a stiff bristle brush. Wash using a pressure cleaner, or your garden hose on the highest setting. Allow to dry overnight.

3 PRIME & PAINTApply an acrylic primer to undercoat the pergola. Allow to dry before applying two to three coats of waterbased paint.

SAND THE WOODUse a sander to sand down the pergola. Don’t forget to wear a sanding mask and protective eyewear.

PAINTBegin painting your pathway by cutting in the edges. Paint the rest of the path using a long nap roller on an extension pole. Allow to dry before applying the second coat.

DIY: YOUR DECK

1 MAKE REPAIRSReplace any boards that have rotted and change any loose screws or nails with new ones. Remove debris between boards with a putty knife.

3 APPLY STAINApply a deck stain using a lambs wool applicator or deck brush attached to a roller pole. Start at the inside corner and work out – towards the door, stairs or gate. You will need to apply 2/3 coats of deck stain depending on the product instructions. See in store for more expert tips and advice.

CLEAN SURFACEUse a leaf blower or broom to remove leaves and debris. Wash the deck thoroughly, using a deck cleaner and a stiff bristle brush. Rinse off using a pressure washer. Allow to dry overnight.
