Gerunds
• A gerund is a verb ending in -ing form that acts as a nounin a sentence.
Not all verb forms that end in -ing are gerunds.
A gerund phrase is a group of words containing the gerund and itsmodifiers. Although the word ending in -ing may still be a verb, theentire phrase acts as the subject or direct object of the sentence.
Read each sentence. Write the gerund on the blank line.

Inflectional Ending -ing, Shades of Meaning,and Suffix -a/
• The inflectional -ing ending indicates action in progress.
• Some words have shades of meaning, or levels of specificity.
The suffix -al means "relating to."
For most short words ending in a consonant, double the last letter of thebase: cut + -ing = cutting.
For most longer words with a stressed last syllable and ending in a singleconsonant, double the last letter of the base: begin + -ing = beginning.
For words ending in a silent e, and the suffixes starting with a vowel, dropthe silent e: nature + -al = natural.
