Greund

It is derived from a Latin word Gerere. Which Means to Do or to Perform something.

It is a word Ending with the “ing” from of a verb that the force of a verb & a noun. So it is also classed verbal noun.

It is basically a verb in its ing form, but function as a noun. It is a noun that shows an action or name an action.

Gerund

It is most often singular so it requires the pronoun It.

Example:• She likes swimming, it is good exercise.

But sometimes Gerund has a pural form so it requires the pronoun They.

Example:• I like writings of Shakespeare.

Structures of Gerund

• Verb-ing + Noun/Adverb/Preposition phase.• Driving fast is risky.

• Singular gerund phase + Singular Verb.• Smoking is a bad habit.

• Plural gerund phase + Singular Verb.• Washing clothes is your duty.

• As a subject of verb.• Smoking is a bad habit.

• As the object of a verb.• He loves swimming in the river.

• As the complement of Be.• My desire is helping my nation.

• After the Adverb :NO: to indicate prohibition.• No smoking.

• As the object of a preposition.• As object of preposition it can be used in three structures.

a) Verb + Preposition + Gerund.• Our Teacher insists on coming to class late.

b) Adjective + Preposition + Gerund.• I am tired of teaching English.

c) Noun + Preposition + Gerund.• My father of head of hiring people.
