STUDENT MANUAL

You are required to devise and carry out a scientific experiment to investigate any ONE of

the conditions required for seeds to germinate. (Please refer Element 2 Criteria 12- 16)

Following that, you are required to write a scientific report on that activity.

The following guidelines will help you prepare an elaborate and complete report.

1. Aim of the investigation

2. Build a hypothesis

3. Identify the variables

4. A list of the apparatus and materials needed for the science investigation5. Elaborate on the procedure of the experiment

6. You may use diagrams to illustrate the experiment

7. Draw your observation and present the qualitative data in a table.

8. Write your inference on your observation.9. Draw a conclusion from your observation.

10. All report should be submitted to your science teacher immediately after theinvestigation.

Aim of Experiment : To investigate that water is one of the conditions needed

for seeds to germinate. (construct 12 criteria a)

Hypothesis : Water is one of the conditions needed for seeds to

germinate. (construct 12 criteria b)

Variables

Constant : the presence of air/ the surrounding temperature/ the typeof seeds

Manipulated : the presence of water Responding : the germination of seeds

Apparatus& Materials : i. 2 boiling tubes

ii. cotton wool

iii. wateriv. green beans

Procedure : i. Place an equal amount of cotton wool into two boiling

tubes.

ii. Wet the cotton wool in one of the boiling tube.

iii. Place two green beans into each of the boiling tubes.iv. Leave the boiling tubes near a window in the laboratory

for 5 days.
