Marketplace

In 1381 Zeil am Main became a town. In the middle age the central place was a place for trading and venue. It is also known as a sad area because they murdered people who were accused as witches there in former times

In March: "Oculi market"In July: "Jacobi market"In October: "Fair market"In December: "Christmas market"

The central building on the square is the town hall. It was built in 1540. Over the centuries it had different functions. It served as a school, festivals are taking place every year. It housed offenders in a holding cell. During the Second World War the town hall was a military hospital.Near the entrance you can see the coat of arms.

The "Zeiler Käppele"

The "Zeiler Käppele" was built

between 1894 -1897. Today the

small pilgrim church is a

famous landmark of the city

Zeil am Main.

It lies on a mountain above the town with a magnificent

view of the valley. In the lastyears many things have

changed. For example, it was in the year 1808, the "Cross

Way" was inaugurated. This leads the visitor over 14

stations from the valley up to the church. In both world

wars the church bells were melted to have material for the

war. In 1951 they installed three new steel bells.

Nowadays the church is very popular especially with

young couples as a wedding church.

The city tower

The 36 meter high tower of the city was built in the 14th century. It was the city's fortification. In 1725 he received an "onion dome" in place of the original peaked roof. He served as a prison, among other things. The victims of the witch hunts were probably held caught in the town tower. There were guards in the city tower. They had to look for fire and take care of the inhabitants. They gave a signal with a horn and show the direction with a white cloth.

The wine-festivals

The area around Zeil am Main belongs to the centuries wine growing regions. The first written evidence of wine was in 1335. Wine growing is also very popular in the neighbour- hood village. The local winemakers built their wine on the hillsides around the villages. Every tourist likes the view and the region because of that.

During the wine-festivals we expect more than 60 000 visitors…..

witch hunt

A dark chapter in the town Zeil am Main is the subject of “ witch hunt”. Each person who was different somehow was accused as a witch or sorcerer. They say the witches were to blame for famines, diseases, winter dips in the spring and much more. Between 1616 and 1631 there were approximately 300 victims who were considered witches and even confessions extracted under torture. In 1631 during the Thirty Years war they stopped the torturing and burning witches suddenly. The witches (woman, men and children!!!) were previously afflicted with a variety of torture methods, until they admitted in desperation being a witch.
