Hello fellow club members. We just had another successful Stamp Show
at the Lions Centre!! Thank you so much to all of you who volunteered to
either man the Club Table in the hall, helped with the set up Friday, the take
down on Sunday, and to so many others who helped behind the scenes. The
good folks at the Lions Centre said they are happy to have us there as well.
We can look forward to a good relationship with these people as well.
According to the dealers, they were all very happy with the traffic. This
show was well attended. So again, thanks to all who hung a poster or told a
friend, dropped off some brochures and anything else you did to let people
know. This all adds up to getting the word out that we have a great show to
go to. Keep up the good work! This show will hopefully gain us some more
new members, who of course are always welcome.
Congratulations to Kelly Luisz-Moser and David Piercy for the success on
the exhibits. We are a National level show thanks to the good number of
quality exhibits we got this year: 116. Congratulations to all who won a
medal or an award of some kind. On that note we all can thank and
appreciate the participation and attendance of our friends to the South : the
members of the Calgary Club!
Congratulations to the winners of the Door Prizes. Thanks to Peta
Vandenbosch, for donating the Flower Stamp Collector Plates! These are
very nice to have. This, as well as the stock book, an annual gift from the
West Edmonton Stamp and Coin Shop.
If you missed your chance to get any of the Show Covers, past or present
you can still buy them from Ken Kluchky, who as you may know by now, is
the winner of this year’s ESC Distinguished Service Award.
Congratulations Ken, this was a well-deserved award!
Our show next year’s Spring Show is April 2-3, 2016 (Same days, same
place).
See you all then? I am sure we will.

Greetings Philatelists!
That was quite a Spring Show on the last weekend of March. I was struck
by the variety and quality of the exhibits. Our hobby is so wide ranging that
no two exhibits were comparable. Our latest Life Member, David Piercey
took the top award with an exhibit detailing Newfoundland coastal mail
service. Congratulations, you do us proud. A complete list of the winners
can be found in this Bulletin. Attendance was very good. It is as if we are
seeing a revival of stamp collecting as a pastime. As a collector of pre 2000
Dutch philatelic material I get the catalogue of the Netherlands association
of stamp dealers and in the foreword to this publication the editors note that
the low point in activity in the hobby is now behind them and that the
demand for their catalogue is increasing, especially from South East Asia,
South America and China. Our own club witnesses something similar: since
March of last year the Club recorded 24 new members and returning
members. Some came in hopes of selling their collection but the majority
joined to make use of the many ways we offer to add to their holdings and
to participate in, and enjoy, the social contacts. This brings me to the
governance (to use a buzzword) of our club. Elections for the board of
directors will be held during the first meeting in June. In preparation a
nominating committee will be compiling the names of candidates who are
willing to serve this vibrant cabal, initially board members are elected for a

I received a scan of three Puerto
Rico “Porte Aero” triangle stamps,
Fig 1. I was asked if I had any
information on these stamps. I
personally had not seen these
stamps before. The same day in
the mail I received my copy of The Cinderella Philatelist. You can imagine
my surprise and my pleasure to see an article on these triangle airmail
stamps from Puerto Rico. The article, Porte Aero Triangles of 1941 by Ed
Pieklo states that this is an eight stamp set with values from 1c to $1. This is
a private printing probably done in 1941 by the Eveready Label Company
of New York. The stamp design has a plane flying over mountains (of
Puerto Rico) with a Statue of Liberty in the bottom left of the design and in
the lower left the symbol of the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. Each
value is printed in a sheetlet of six stamps, Fig 2. More information is
available in the publication “Triangle Philatelics” by Chris Green. Does
any member have a copy of this publication?
I surmise Mr. Pieklo was inspired to write his article when he found a
genuine postally used philatelic cover sent from San Juan, Puerto Rico to
NY, USA. This cover had all eight stamps of the air mail set cancelled by a
Mar 22, { day of issue } Aerovias seaplane canceler plus a 1926 10c USA
airmail stamp cancelled with the regular San Juan Mar 23 postal cancel. His
description of this cover is WOW! I call it Bloody Beautiful. Mr. Pieklo
would appreciate knowing if anyone else has a cover using these stamps. He
can be contacted via The Cinderella Philatelist Editor,

PART V: LOST COLONIES
Samoa Germany, the United States, and Great Britain all struggled for influence and
control of the Samoan Islands from 1886 through 1899 (Fig.-6-a). During this
time independent Samoan entities issued their own stamps based on British

currency (Fig.-6-b & Fig.-6-c). Later stamps were also issued by the British
(Fig.-6-d). During the struggle a provisional government overprinted some of
the British stamps. (Fig.-6-e)
Fig 6a Fig 6b Fig 6c
Fig 6d Fig 6e Fig 6f
The Samoa Tripartite Convention of 1899 gave Germany control of the
islands west of 171 west longitude and the eastern islands to the United States
(present-day American Samoa) (Fig.-6-f). American Samoa is a self-governing
Commonwealth. The United Kingdom was compensated with other Pacific and
West African territories.
German plantations imported Chinese laborers to grow rubber, cacao, and
coconut. Germany exercised a comparatively high degree of cultural tolerance
and established roads as well as medical and educational facilities for the
natives. In 1914 the New Zealand Expeditionary Force invaded and took
control of German Samoa. New Zealand stamps were used during the military
occupation through 1920 and then New Zealand governed the islands as a
League of Nations and United Nations mandate when several overprinted New
Zealand sets were used. (Figs.6-g, 6-h, & 6-i)
The area became known as Western Samoa for a period of time (Fig.-6-j). It
gained independence in 1946.
