LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

It has been an exciting Summer at the German American Society. Over the past few months, we hosted our annual picnic for the first time at our new location, and it was an overwhelming success! We have also started our 50th year of the Saturday “Deutsche Sprachschule” and have placed our newly designed logo on our building signage. The Library location has been designated and new bookcases have been installed. It should be up and running soon.

Our membership is growing, and we are in the midst of fully realizing the value and potential of the new German Haus.

I would like to express a special “thank you” to the Ladies group for their help and preparation of the food and drink for our picnic and to all the volunteers who gave their time unselfishly to put on this event.

Enjoy the rest of your Summer, and we hope that each of you have a wonderful Fall season.

Best regards, Wolfgang Werner

SATURDAY LANGUAGE PROGRAM

The GSSOP launched its 5th year on September 14 and currently enrolls over 120 students in 11 classes. Students, staff and families are thrilled to be meeting in the newly remodeled Educational Wing of the Society’s new home at Alameda and 57th. Continuing the established tradition of offering German language courses leavened with strong cultural content, the Saturday Language Program is a key element in the Society’s fulfillment of its non-profit purpose “to further the perpetuation of German ethnic culture, heritage, arts, and language.”

SCHOLARSHIPS: The Society’s Board recently gave its approval to again granting annual Tuition Scholarships to Oregon high school seniors based on their performance on the AATG National German Exam. Scholarship monies to be granted in the coming year will total $7,000.

LIBRARY: Generous shelving has been built in the stairwell area to accommodate the Society’s book collection. The books need to be sorted, after being stored during our move and remodel, and recent additions need to be cataloged and labeled. With any luck, the Library will be ready for use before the end of the year. Anyone interested in volunteering a couple of hours a month to oversee check-outs and returns is encouraged to contact Education Chair, Chris Stehr.

The Saturday German Language Program is celebrating its 50th year on October 5, 2013 in the Max Kade German Heritage Hall at 2:00 pm. A dedication of the Günther Hoffmann Education Wing will also take place. Everyone is welcome to attend and former students are encouraged to share their memories. Please RSVP to Christian Stehr at [email protected] / 503-775-1585.

The first classes of the Deutsche Sprachschule Portland were held in September 1964 at the downtown German Club. They were organized by Gunther Hoffmann under the umbrella of the General German Aid Society, founded in 1871 and today is known as the German American Society.
