A big thing that I took home from this class is that in working with the elderly, we need to remember that they have great worth and wisdom. We should make treatment more than just a check off list of things to do and also try to get to know them and their goals. We were assigned to interview two elderly people, one 65-80, and the other 80+. The ladies I talked with have a lot of experience that I can learn from. The older lady was grumpy and didn’t want to talk to me at first although she still did. As I talked with her, I realized that there are reasons why people are the way they are. It would have been really easy for me to get defensive and not respect her in this situation. Still, I always want to try and treat these people with dignity, respect, and kindness even if they don’t do the same to me.
