GV-NVR System Lite Vs QNAP VS-2008 Pro

Article ID: GV38-11-3-24

Release Date: 3/24/2011

The GV-NVR System Lite is a light-weight and ultra-slim NVR system that can record video files directly

to the internal hard drives. We compared GV-NVR System Lite with QNAP’s VS-2008 Pro and

summarized the advantages of GV-NVR System Lite as below.

Smooth Live View

We compared the live view images of GV-NVR System Lite and VS-2008 Pro when they are connected

to up to 4 channels of 1.3 megapixel IP cameras. Under all codec types, GV-NVR System Lite shows

smooth live view when simultaneously connecting to 4 IP channels.

On the other hand, although claiming to support up to 8 channels, VS-2008 Pro starts to drop

frames when connecting to multiple megapixel cameras as indicated below. In addition, VS-2008

Pro can only support 30 fps at D1 or VGA resolution according to its software specification, which is

problematic as megapixel IP cameras are increasingly becoming the industry-standard.

Recording at Full Frame Rate

Videos from 4 channels of 1.3 megapixel IP cameras were recorded on GV-NVR System Lite and

QNAP VS-2008 Pro to compare the recorded frame rate. We can see that the GV-NVR System Lite

recorded 100% of the cameras’ maximum frame rates, while VS-2008 Pro was only capable of

recording part of the cameras’ maximum frame rates.

The test results of the GV-NVR System Lite were determined using the 4 GV-IP Cameras listed below.

The FPS specifications of the 4 cameras add up to 75 frames per second.

Ch Model FPS Specifications

1 GV-BX110D 15

2 GV-BX110D 15

3 GV-BX110D 15

4 GV-BX120D 30

For VS-2008 Pro, the maximum frame rates of the 4 third-party cameras used in testing MJPEG add up

to 52 fps, and the frame rates of the cameras used in testing MPEG4 and H.264 add up to 66 fps. To

see details on the third-party IP cameras used to obtain the VS-2008 Pro test results, please refer to

Appendix A.

We simultaneously recorded a moving person using GV-NVR System Lite and VS-2008 Pro, and

captured the recorded frames during the same time period. As shown below, GV-NVR System Lite

recorded many more frames to ensure a smooth and detailed playback, whereas VS-2008 Pro

images show sudden movement and ghost image due to low frame rate.

Effortless File Export and Playback

After the video images are recorded, GV-NVR System Lite’s built-in software enables users to directly

export the videos as avi format. Recorded video clips can then be played back on any computer using

common media players. GV-NVR System Lite uses the more popular Windows file system to

make sharing recorded video quick and easy. Since VS-2008 Pro is a Linux-based NVR, users

have to transfer videos to a separate computer through network in order to export the avi video

files.

Time required to export Avi files 1 minute 10+ minutes

Exporting video files for evidence Network not required Network required

Level of difficulty Easy Complicated

From the diagrams below, we can see that exporting video files from GV-NVR System Lite is fast,

convenient and requires no network.

When VS-2008 Pro is not connected to network, users have to remove the HDD from VS-2008 Pro,

attach it to a Linux computer, read the video files with the correct file system (EXT3) and transfer the

files to a Windows system computer in order to export the Avi file.

Flexible Recording Modes

GV-NVR System Lite allows users to easily select among different recording modes including

round-the-clock, motion detection, sensor detection, pre & post recording and schedule recording.

VS-2008 Pro users, however, can only change the recording mode from a separate windows-based PC.

Furthermore, VS-2008 Pro’s motion detection function relies on the third-party IP cameras and

is only available when the connecting IP camera supports motion detection.

Support for RTSP and PSIA

GV-NVR System Lite and GV-IP Cameras all support RTSP and PSIA protocols, whereas VS-2008

Pro does not support RTSP and PSIA protocols.

All-In-One Solution

While QNAP users can only integrate its network surveillance systems with third-party IP cameras,

GeoVision offers an all-in-one solution for network surveillance. A wide variety of GV-IP Cameras

available not only ensures full compatibility with GV-NVR System Lite, but also significantly

reduces troubleshooting time and RMA costs when the need for technical support arises.
