What is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal Energy is energy generated from heat in the Earth’s core.

Geothermal power plants use resources that have water and heat. They

require high temperature hydrothermal resources of 300ºF to 700ºF that

come from dry steam wells or hot water wells. These resources are used by

drilling wells into the ground and creating pipes to bring the steam or hot

water to the surface.

Types of Geothermal Power Plants

Dry steam plants directly use geothermal steam to turn turbines.

Flash steam plants are the most commonly used power plant. They take high-pressure hot water from inside the earth and convert it to steam to drive the turbines of the generator. When the steam is converted back into water, it is put

back into the ground so it can be reused.

Binary cycle power plants transfer heat from geothermal hot water to another liquid. The second liquid turns to steam and turns the turbine of the generator.
