    GEORGIAN COLLEGE BOARD OF GOVERNORSPROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD

    Purpose

    The Board of Governors Professional Development Award has been established to

    recognize a staff member who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment tomaintaining currency in their profession or vocation in keeping with College values asoutlined in the strategic plan. This award supports the Colleges expectation that staffwill be individually responsible for remaining current in their chosen fields by activelyparticipating in ongoing professional development and personal learning.

    Currency is defined as:

    A. Professional or vocational skills - demonstrating an awareness,understanding, and application of commonly accepted and emerging practices,methods, operations, theories, and skills.

    For administrative staff this means:o educational administration - recruiting, developing, mentoring, and retaining staff

    in an era of economic, technological and social changeo current management issues and practices e.g. managing the change process,

    supporting staff renewal, improving the quality to programs or services,developing partnerships

    For academic staff this means:o content expertise in his/her area of disciplineo use of best practices in teaching methodologies

    For support staff this means:o the technical aspects of a given jobo customer service knowledge and focus

    B. Workplace Skills - demonstrating/developing critical thinking skills,communication skills, adaptability, teamwork skills, technological skills, positiveattitude and behaviour, responsibility, and pursuing lifelong learning

    The Award

    One award may be presented per year. The award will consist of a plaque, a citationand a taxable cash award of $1,500 that could be used to support ongoing professionaldevelopment. The award will be presented at a special Board event. Should there beno eligible candidates for this award in a given year, the award will not be granted.

    Eligibility

    A minimum of three years full-time employment with the College;

    Currency:

    A. Professional or Vocational Skills examples could include:

    o maintaining a personal professional development plan that identifies training anddevelopment needs related to professional or vocational skills;

    o participating in workshops and training sessions sponsored by the College that arefocused on the development of professional or vocational skills;

    o taking courses at another college, university, or through a professional association,related to current, or planned work assignments, or to build professional orvocational skills;

    o working on a special project inside, or outside, the College that relates tohis/her area of expertise;

    o obtaining a paid, or unpaid, work assignment in an industrial or organizational

    setting related to current or planned work assignments;o job shadowing in an industrial or organizational setting related to current or planned

    work assignments;o accompanying a staff member who is monitoring students on work experience (e.g.

    co-op, field placement, apprenticeship, clinical);o obtaining appropriate guidance/training and then monitoring students on work

    experience;o liaising with industry to develop work experience opportunities for students;o playing an active role in an industry or professional association;o participating in industry professional development activities;o making industry contacts and actively soliciting support for College programs

    (donations, advisory committee participation, etc.)

    B. Workplace Skills examples could include:

    o maintaining a personal professional development plan that identifies training anddevelopment needs related to workplace skills;

    o participating in workshops and training sessions sponsored by the College that arefocused on the development of workplace skills;

    o development needs related to the development of workplace skills;o writing a journal article or book in his/her area of expertise;o giving a presentation at a professional conference;

    o conducting workshops or training sessions for Georgian College staff in his/herarea of expertise;

    o acting as a trainer, facilitator, or consultant, for external organizations;o teaching a course for another college or university;o playing an active role in a community board or association;o taking on a special assignment in a non-academic areas of the College (e.g.

    Accounting, Marketing and Communications, Media Centre, etc.);o actively participating on a College committee or on a College task team for a

    special project (e.g. green initiatives);o developing, adopting and/or adapting technology.

    Procedure

    The Board of Governors will accept nominations from Governors, staff, andstudents; letters of support will be accepted from community members;

    Deadline for nominations is the last working day of February;

    Nomination forms must be signed by three (3) people and may include a maximumof three (3) letters of support; forms may be obtained through the Board ExecutiveAssistant;

    Once received by the Board Office, nominations will be forwarded to HumanResource Services for completion of the employment history section (question A onthe form) and to review eligibility;

    Nominations will be forwarded to the Recognition Committee which consists of theBoard Executive; internal Governors; President and CEO; VP, Administration; andthe VP, Academic; ; the Committee is chaired by the Board Chair;

    Recipients will be notified by the President and CEO; all nominees receive a copy oftheir nomination package.
