Greetings, GHSA Football Fans: Welcome to the GHSA - Tommy Guillebeau Football State Championships presented by Georgia Farm Bureau. The players, coaches, cheerleaders and band members from these competing schools have put in many hours of work to prepare for this event. It is my hope that you will appreciate their skills in the magnificent setting of the Georgia Dome this weekend. The Georgia High School Association thanks you for your support of high school football throughout this season. Spectators are a very important part of all high school athletics, and this is especially true for the school for which you are cheering. We do want to remind you that good sportsmanship is an essential element of high school athletics, and today is no exception. Be positive in your support of all the participants. Behind the scenes of this great event is a group of hard-working volunteers who will donate many hours of time this weekend to make this experience better for all participants. The GHSA office staff has been working for many weeks on the details that make this event so spe-cial. The extremely skilled staff of the Georgia Dome works diligently to support the GHSA in this event, and they stand ready to assist you and your needs. I want to thank all these people for their dedicated work to make this a showcase event. The quality of GHSA events such as this one is made possible through the help of corporate partners whose ads are dis-played in this program and around the field. The GHSA thanks these fine organizations, and we encourage you to support them whenever possible. People throughout the state of Georgia (and in parts of surrounding states) who cannot make it to Atlanta this weekend will be able to share in the experience through live television production provided by Georgia Public Broadcasting. The GHSA thanks GPB for its fine work. These games are also being aired on a number of radio stations across the state on the GHSA / GNN Radio Network. Additionally, the games are being video streamed live on www.GPB.org/sports and www.GHSA.tv.

Now sit back and enjoy high school football at its finest!

Cordially yours,

GENERAl INFORMATIONThe Georgia Dome, the largest cable-supported domed stadium in the world, opened in 1992. Located in downtown Atlanta, the Dome is the home venue for the Atlanta Falcons, host to Super Bowl XXVIII and XXXIV, host of the gymnastics and basketball events for the 1996 Olympic Games and host to both a Men’s and Women’s NCAA Final Four. Annually, the Dome hosts the Bank of America Atlanta Football classic, the SEC Football Championship and the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Dome is equipped to handle large non-sport-ing events which include everything from major trade shows to concerts by such entertainers as the Rolling Stones and U2 to religious events by such ministers as Billy Graham and T.D. Jakes.

bASIC FEATURESA total of 8,300 tons of reinforced steel was used to construct the Dome. That is more than the weight of iron and steel used in the Eiffel Tower. A 437-mile sidewalk, from Atlanta to Cincinnati, could be built from the 110,000 cubic yards of concrete used at the Dome. The building covers 8.9 acres and contains 1.6 million square feet on all seven levels. The 290-foot high roof is composed of 130 Teflon-coated fiberglass panels - covering 8.6 acres. The roof ’s supporting cable totals 11.1 miles and the Dome is as tall as a 27-story building.

UpCOMING EvENTSIn addition to Atlanta Falcons home games and the SEC championship game, the Georgia Dome hosts the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the HBCU All-Star Bowl, Monster Jam, the Honda Battle of the Bands and the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball South Regional. For a complete schedule of events at the Georgia Dome, please visit www.gadome.com.

FOOd SERvICELevy Restaurants manages all catering, concessions and restaurant services. Levy has been recognized internationally for the superb cuisine and service that it provides the Georgia World Congress Center. Levy handles all food and beverage affairs, from small receptions to the world’s largest banquets.

Grayson14-0, Region 8, No. 1 seed Much like their counterparts from Cobb, the Grayson Rams’ semifinal game went down to the final drive. Quarterback Nick Schuessler delivered a touchdown pass to wide receiver Marcus Lindquist with less than a minute left to complete a 35-31 comeback against Region 1 powerhouse Colquitt County in Loganville. The scoring pass capped an 87-yard drive. Offensively, head coach Mickey Conn favors an offense very common on Friday nights, but less popular on Saturdays and Sundays: the run-based Wing-T. That isn’t to say that Schuessler is not a proficient passer. He has thrown for more than 1,497 yards and 17 touchdowns this fall. When they run the football, look for a thunder-and-lightning style from running backs Devin Gillespie and Robert Nkemdiche. While Gillespie leads the team in rushing with 803 yards, Nkemdiche probably leads the state in the at-tention received by college recruiters. Nkemdiche is being recruited by Alabama, Georgia and pretty much every-body else. The junior was recently named the nation’s top college prospect in the 2013 class. Nkemdiche plays fullback but also anchors the Rams’ defense. When the defensive end isn’t sack-ing the quarterback (he had three sacks in the quarterfinal victory over another Region 1 power, Lowndes), he is taking up double and triple teams. Either way, he has helped Grayson (14-0) limit opponents to less than 40 yards rushing per game. Over the final five-game stretch of the Region 8 schedule, the Rams limited opponents to 14 total points. Before giving up 31 points to pass-happy Colquitt County, no opponent had scored more than 17 points against Grayson this season. The Rams have made it to at least the quarterfinals in each of the last five seasons, but this is their first appearance in the finals.

Walton14-0, Region 5, No. 1 seed Walton survived a furious comeback by Cobb County-rival Lassiter last week to advance to the school’s first-ever appearance in the state football finals. The Raiders (14-0) stopped a Lassiter drive when a pass fell incomplete in the end zone. Walton won 30-24. The Raiders run a conservative, but high-powered offense. Behind a powerful offensive line, they like to hand the ball to junior tailback Tyren Jones. On the season, Jones has rushed for 2,289 yards and 38 touchdowns. In the victory over Lassiter, he ran for 183 yards and two scores. His 65-yard scamper in the third quarter provided the winning margin for Walton. Vanderbilt and Duke are pursuing Jones, but expect other SEC and ACC schools to join the battle for his letter of intent in February of 2013. Jones leads an offense that averages over 37 points and just under 200 yards rushing per game. Senior twin brothers Daron and Zack Blaylock have already made their college commitment. The pair of standout defensive backs will play for Joker Phillips at Kentucky next fall. Zack leads all Cobb County defend-ers with 11 interceptions, but he dislocated his elbow returning an interception last week against Lassiter. He is expected to play tonight. Daron has been among the team leaders in tackles all season for the Raiders. When asked what his team must do to beat Grayson, Hidalgo said the team needs to play well on offense and defense for a full 48 minutes. “We are going to have to win on third downs,” said Hildalgo. “Get off the field on third downs and stay on the field when we have the ball.” This is Walton’s first football appearance in the state finals and the first for an East Cobb school since Wheeler played for the title in 1973.

For Walton and Grayson, it will be “déjà vu all over again” when they meet in

the championship. Both teams will play the season’s final game on the same

field upon which they started their respective seasons. Each year the Corky

Kell Classic, held at the Georgia Dome, marks the beginning of the football

season with a series of games featuring some of the best football programs

in the state. This year, Grayson beat Cobb’s Kell 7-0 in one matchup. In an-

other game, Walton defeated Gwinnett’s Peachtree Ridge 26-14. Another

side note is that both teams are undefeated. This is just the second time

undefeated teams have met in the championship since the GHSA went to

five classifications in 2000. The only other time was in 2001 when Parkview

edged Northside-Warner Robins, 12-7.

lovejoy14-0, Region 4, No. 1 seed The Wildcats have ridden their defense to the Dome and hope that they have one more great performance left in them. The numbers put up by the Lovejoy defense are staggering: 3.6 points per game in the regular season, eight shutouts, 21 blocked kicks and 42 forced turnovers. The defense has been best in the state in points allowed per game allowed and has continually provided the offense with great field position by causing turnovers and blocked kicks. Against Warner Robins in the semifinals, the Lovejoy defense did not disappoint. The Wildcats blocked the first punt attempt by the Demons, who did not try to punt again. Jermaine Hough picked off Demons quarterback Ty Odom twice to give the Wildcats good field position. Odom was only able to com-plete four passes on 20 attempts for 40 yards. The Wildcats’ offense has been the beneficiary of the stingy defense and has not had to put up too many points during the playoff run. Lovejoy struggled offensively against Warner Robins putting up 209 yards, with only 34 coming in the first half. Despite these troubles the Wildcats were able to score 21 points. Two of their scores came after the Hough interceptions, as quar-terback Alejandro Benefield took advantage by throwing two touchdowns to A.J. Jackson. Travis Custis once again carried the load offensively for the Wildcats, racking up 131 yards rushing and one touchdown, with a majority of his production coming in the second half. Custis has been the workhorse for the Love-joy offense this year, and there is no reason to think that he will not be the focal point once again in the championship game. Lovejoy’s grind-it-out style does not always produce the prettiest games, but there is no denying its effectiveness.

Tucker14-0, Region 6, No. 1 seed The Tigers defeated Northside-Warner Robins in the semifinals 17-16 last week to get here. Tuck-er shut down the Eagles’ offense which came into the game averaging 35.3 points per game in the playoffs. The Tucker defense not only held the Eagles to 16 points, but the Tigers also came up with the game-win-ning score on a 100-yard fumble return by linebacker Justin Rivers late in the fourth quarter after trailing 16-10. Northside was on the two-yard line looking to put the game away prior to the fumble. The defense has been led this season by outstanding defensive back Sancharles Zachary, who has tallied 74 total tackles including five forced fumbles. Joshua Dawson is the playmaker up front for Tucker, leading the team with eight sacks on the season from the defensive end position. The Tigers’ offense left something to be desired last week, only scoring one offensive touchdown, and the 17 points was well under their 44.7 average in previous rounds of the playoffs. Tucker will look to get back to the offensive form that had been dominating defenses in the first three rounds. Quarterback Juwaan Wil-liams will need to be the spark on the offensive side of the ball as his dual-threat abilities have been key for the Tigers all year. Williams posted three rushing touchdowns in the quarterfinals win over Flowery Branch, and for this offense to move the ball effectively in the finals, Williams will need to keep the defense honest with a solid performance both running and throwing. The Tigers’ offense will need to improve drastically from their semifinals performance because the Lovejoy defense has allowed a min-iscule 4.8 points per game in the playoffs.

CLASS AAAA Skinny

This finals matchup between the Lovejoy Wildcats and Tucker Tigers will be an offensive coordinator’s nightmare. Both defenses have shown the ability to con-sistently shut down opposing offenses throughout the playoffs. The game will be a battle in which the winner will need to play a physical game, and it could come down to a defensive or special teams score. Lovejoy’s defensive unit has been the best statistically in the state, and the Wildcats have played in and won many close, low-scoring games. The defense has caused 42 turnovers, 28 fumbles and 14 interceptions this season and will look to do the same to the Tigers’ offense. Tucker’s defense has not been bad either, forcing 22 turnovers and scoring six touchdowns. Tucker will look to forget last week’s struggles and return to the form the Tigers played with in the first three games of the playoffs when they averaged 44.7 per game.

burke County13-1, Region 3, No. 1 seed The Burke County Bears (13-1) have run wild this season behind their ground attack. The rush-ing game has caught many defenses off guard and has supplied the Region 3-AAA champs with a gashing, high-scoring offensive attack. The Bears’ offense averages around 45 points per game and has surpassed the 50-point mark six times this season including an 84-7 drumming of Cross Creek. In last week’s semifinal matchup against Gainesville, the offense did not skip a beat. The ground game compiled 527 total yards en route to a 63-28 rout over the Red Elephants. Running back Donquell Green led the team with 189 yards on 11 attempts and scored three touchdowns. He also had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Senior quarterback Corey Mayton, who has an offer from Georgia State, added 121 yards on the ground while tailback Montres Kitchens gained 90 yards and had three touch-downs. The trio helped the Bears garner 20 first downs in the opening two quarters. With such a high-scoring offense, Burke County hopes it can give the stingy Peach County defense a run for its money. The Bears defense also has held its own this season by holding more than half of its opponents to less than 10 points. Kitchens plays safety as well for the Bears and recorded six tackles against Gainesville. If the Bears hope to contain the Trojans’ passing attack at the Dome, Kitchens will need to have a major role in the defense. In the trenches, Devonte Lambert plugs the holes and provides quarterbacks with countless amounts of pressure. He accounted for three tackles against the Red Elephants. By defeating the Red Elephants, the Bears finally got over the hump to play at the Georgia Dome. Last season’s stinging 49-15 defeat at the hands of runner-up Carrollton left a bad taste in Burke County’s mouth. With another year of experience, the Bears hope a strong defense and an unstoppable running game can be the difference.

peach County13-1, Region 2, No. 1 seed Peach County continued its pursuit of another state title by defeating Cairo 16-7 in Fort Valley to improve its season record to 13-1. With the win, the Region 2-AAA champs make their seventh appear-ance in the state title game in hopes of winning a fourth crown and first since 2009. Despite a minor speed bump in a 21-14 loss to West Laurens, Peach County has played perfect ball the rest of the way to put together an eight-game winning streak. A major reason for the Trojans’ success this season has come on the defensive side of the ball. The Trojans currently allow nine points per game and nine of their opponents have scored less than 10 points. During last week’s victory over Cairo, the defense did not shy away from the success attained this season. At halftime, the Trojans’ defense held the Syrupmakers to only 50 yards of total offense, and the only points put on the board for Peach County came on linebacker Ryan Bowman’s pick-6. The offense also has some playmakers who can change the complexion of a game. Quarterback Kentel Kendrick has thrown for 2,045 yards thus far on the season and has 16 touchdown passes and just three picks. Nine of those touchdowns have gone to stud junior receiver Demarcus Robinson. The wide-out, who has received scholarship offers from Florida and Georgia, has amassed 1,040 yards receiving and added 125 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. The amazing part of his stat line is in his yards per reception where he averages almost 20 yards a catch. During last week’s semifinal matchup, a banged-up Robinson caught three passes for 77 yards. After sitting for most of the third quarter with a sprained shoulder, Robinson still came in with the game on the line. Expect Robinson to be “all in” with the season on the line at the Georgia Dome.

CLASS AAA Skinny

In 2007, Burke County and Peach County made important hires that would shape the state’s football landscape for the next half decade. Chad Campbell was named head coach of the Trojans, while Eric Parker was tapped to lead the Bears. During Campbell’s tenure at Peach County, he has compiled an .877 winning percentage and earned two trips to the state finals. In 2009, his squad won the state championship with a 13-12 nailbiter over Gainesville. With con-secutive trips to the state semifinals, Burke County has become a state power. Parker has helped bring the Bears back to the state title game for the second time in school history with the other appearance coming in 1997. Burke County has never won a state title. Peach County, on the other hand, won titles in 2005, 2006 and 2009. This meeting between the Bears and Trojans will be the first ever between the two programs.

Calhoun14-0, Region 7, No. 1 seed Calhoun’s train just keeps on rolling as the Yellow Jackets are back in the Class AA title game for the fourth consecutive season. En route to an undefeated regular season, Calhoun has dominated every game, with the closest competition coming in the first game of the year in a 24-14 victory over Dalton. Despite reaching the title game, the Yellow Jackets have been unable to solve Buford, as they have fallen to the Wolves in each of the past three championship games. In its path to the finals, Calhoun has averaged a staggering 44 points per game with the only serious competition coming against Dalton and Brooks County. The Yellow Jackets hope to ride this momentum and help solve what seems to be a curse against Buford, as they look to end the Wolves title streak at four. Calhoun coach Hal Lamb, who has been with the team since 1999, has achieved great success with the team since taking over the reins and has continued a winning tradition at the school. The Yellow Jackets pride themselves on a strong passing attack, led by quarterback Taylor Lamb, who happens to be Coach Lamb’s nephew. Lamb has been solid in and out of the pocket as he threw for 355 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers in Calhoun’s semifinal rout of Appling County. Along with a high-octane offensive attack which has scored 60 points or more twice this season, Calhoun also possesses a tough defense. Including postseason play, the Jackets’ D has allowed less than 10 points on eight occasions, including two shutouts. Calhoun will need much of the same in order to reverse the curse and finally solve Jess Simpson’s Buford squad.

buford14-0, Region 6, No. 1 seed With four consecutive Class AA titles under their belts, the Buford Wolves can be called the team of the decade. The team is gunning for not only its record fifth straight state crown, but also its seventh in the past 10 years. Since beginning its unprecedented run, the Wolves have lost just two games since 2007 and are currently riding the state’s longest active winning streak at 27 games. Buford coach Jess Simpson is aiming to become the sixth head coach with five GHSA state championships. This season has been no different in regards to Buford’s dominance. After steamrolling through all of its opponents during the regular season postseason play has not only continued that trend, but has taken it to another level. The Wolves have averaged just over 39 points per game during their run to the finals, all while holding opponents to an average of nine points per game. Including postseason play, the Wolves have not scored less than 28 points en route to another perfect season entering their matchup with Calhoun. The semifinal win over Carver was not without a struggle for Buford, as it trailed at halftime 13-7. It was the first time since its last loss against Carver in 2010 that the team had trailed at any point during a game. Along with their stout defense, the Wolves’ running game has also given opponents fits. Four dif-ferent Buford players rushed for touchdowns in the semifinal win, including quarterback Sam Clay, who possesses strong rushing skills outside of being a pocket passer. Simpson will no doubt have his team ready to complete its goal of winning yet another Class AA crown and further cementing his legacy as one of the all-time greats in GHSA coaching history.

CLASS AA Skinny

This game marks the fourth consecutive year that these two powerhouses have

been matched up in the Class AA championship game. Buford has won the past

three games by scores of 45-21, 13-10 and 31-24. Calhoun is looking to reverse

that trend to avoid becoming the second school ever to lose four straight finals

(Adairsville lost four straight from 1969-1972). Buford is gunning for its fifth straight

Class AA title, while Calhoun looks to claim its first crown since 1952. The Yellow

Jackets will look to stop Buford’s high-powered rushing attack, which produced

four rushing touchdowns in the semifinal victory over Carver, while the Wolves will

need to find away to shutdown Calhoun’s stellar offense, which is putting up points

at a torrid pace. It may become a defensive struggle as both teams have been able

to keep the state’s top offenses in check throughout the season.

Savannah Christian14-0, Region 3, No. 1 seed The Savannah Christian Raiders have done this before. This will mark the third straight season that Donald Chumley’s Raiders have advanced to the Class A title game, but Savannah Christian is hop-ing the third time is the charm and the team will win it all in 2011. The defense has carried the Raiders to this point, and the semifinal win was a prime example of just that, as they defeated previously-unbeaten Prince Avenue Christian 27-0. Chumley’s defense has given up just 28 points over the last six games, and DeAngelo Brown anchors the unit. The 6-foot-1 defensive tackle is a beast on the line, and he is joined by Josh Gay and Michael Burke in the 3-4 look. The team has posted six shutouts this season and gives up less than six points per contest. In the semifinal round, the defense stifled Prince Avenue to the tune of 37 yards rushing and no pass completions. It isn’t all defense with the Raiders, though, as Will Austin, Chris Johnston and Nardo Govan help pace a powerful rushing attack. Johnston toted the rock 13 times from his fullback position while Austin racked up 75 yards. If those three aren’t enough, quarterback Johnathan Chamblee can carry it himself (10 carries, 60 yards, three touchdowns against Prince Avenue Christian) or pass it when the situation arises. The offense has averaged 39 points this season, though the number has dipped slightly to 31 this postseason. The trip to the Georgia Dome will be the first time in the postseason the Raiders will not play a game in Savannah. The Raiders opened the playoffs with a 37-0 win over Dooly County, followed by a 38-7 victory over Bowdon. The 22-14 win over Lincoln County was the smallest margin of victory for SCPS all season, but the dominance returned in last week’s 27-0 win over Prince Avenue Christian.

landmark Christian12-2, Region 5, No. 4 seed The Landmark Christian War Eagles have been in must-win mode for more than a month, need-ing a victory over Wesleyan in a region play-in game just to punch a ticket to the postseason. Kenny Dal-las’s squad has excelled once in the playoffs, though, and now Landmark Christian has a shot to become the first No. 4 seed since Peachtree Ridge in 2006 to win a state championship. Along the way to the title game, Landmark Christian reached double-digit wins for just the fourth time in program history. This will be the third region champion that Landmark Christian will face in the postseason after dispatching Darlington in round one and ELCA in the semifinal round. The War Eagles also scored road victories over No. 3 seed Calvary Day and No. 2 seed Aquinas. The Landmark Christian offense thrives when Cantrell Frazier is under center. Frazier ran for a pair of scores and 74 yards on 21 carries against ELCA one week ago after rushing for 71 against Aquinas. He also threw the game winner in the quarterfinal win. Frazier is joined in the backfield by Jeremiah Kirk-land, who has rushed for 205 yards combined in the last two weeks. Josh Nobles is a threat down the field. Defensively, Landmark Christian has come together as a team and shined when the lights are the brightest. Last week, the unit shut down Eagles Landing Christian to the tune of zero passing yards for the Chargers’ quarterbacks. The defense came away with four turnovers, none bigger than William Higbie’s interception late in the fourth quarter. Higbie is a linebacker and fronts a talented defensive secondary. In addition to Frazier, Nobles and Kirkland, the team is led by Donald Payne, Chase McFarland and Cole Higbie, though Landmark Christian’s athletic director Wayne Brantley believes the team’s greatest strength is its team concept.

CLASS A Skinny

The Savannah Christian Raiders entered the playoffs as the No. 1 team in Class A while Landmark Christian was happy to be in after winning a play-in game. Now, the War Eagles are looking to make history as the first No. 4 seed to win an outright state title. Landmark Christian is just the fourth No. 4 seed to ever make a championship game and only Peachtree Ridge in 2006 has won a title, though that was a shared title. Savannah Christian, meanwhile, is seeking its first-ever GHSA title. The Raiders lost one year ago as a No. 4 seed to Clinch County in the title game after falling to Wilcox County in the 2009 finals. Donald Chumley is trying to finish off Savannah Christian’s first undefeated record since 1984 when the team was still com-peting in the GISA. Landmark Christian’s 12 wins this season are a program record for victories in a year.

Georgia High School Association (GHSA) and Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (GEMC) have named the 37 GHSA-member high schools to receive the 2011 GEMC Cooperative Spirit Sportsman-

ship Award, honoring exemplary sportsmanship demonstrated during the 2010-11 school year. “We congratulate these high schools for their outstanding sportsmanship,” said Dr. Ralph Swearn-gin, GHSA Executive Director. “School-based athletics should be an extension of the classroom in provid-ing lessons that last for the student’s lifetime. Sportsmanship is really nothing more than good citizenship expressed in athletic events, and that is an important life lesson.” Sponsored by GHSA and Georgia’s EMCs, the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards pro-gram was introduced in 2006 to honor GHSA member schools that exhibit outstanding sportsmanship. The awards program is designed to promote sportsmanship by honoring those who do it well, reinforcing GHSA’s philosophy: “Student athletes, coaches, spectators, and all others associated with high school ac-tivities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty and responsibility.” The program honors student athletes along with fellow students, school staff, parents and game spectators, making the award not only a school, but also a community honor. The Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards are presented annually to GHSA member high schools in the 40 regions in all five classifications. Region GHSA secretaries select winners based on sportsmanship demonstrated during the year. Representatives from the EMCs have presented sportsmanship trophies to winning high schools within their service territories at presentations during fall athletic events. A voluntary organization composed of more than 400 public and private high schools, the Geor-gia High School Association strives to promote good sportsmanship and a cooperative spirit among its member schools. Georgia EMC is a statewide trade organization representing the state’s 42 EMCs, Oglethorpe Pow-er Corporation and Georgia Transmission Corporation. Through a statewide network, Georgia’s EMCs provide electricity and related services to four million people, nearly half of Georgia’s population, across 73 percent of the state’s land area. Georgia’s 42 electric membership cooperatives serve more customers than any other state network of EMCs in the nation.

GHSA Sportsmanship Statement “The GHSA and its member schools have made a commitment to promote good sportsmanship by student/athletes, coaches, and spectators at all GHSA sanctioned events. Profanity, degrading re-marks, and intimidating actions directed at officials or competitors will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the event site. Spectators are not allowed to enter the competition area during warm-ups or while the contest is being conducted. Thank you for your cooperation in the promotion of good sportsmanship at today’s event.”
